Verify a UFO video by reconstructing its publication history, separating the upload date from the recording date, and matching several visible scene features to dated map, satellite, or ground-level imagery. Reverse searches, metadata, weather, and visual clues are useful only when they corroborate one another. This process can establish or weaken a video’s provenance and caption; it cannot, by itself, prove that an object is extraterrestrial.
What a verification can actually establish
A strong investigation answers three different questions instead of treating them as one:
- Source: Where did this file or scene appear earliest, and which later copies derive from it?
- Date: When was the scene recorded, as distinct from when somebody uploaded or reposted it?
- Location: Does the visible environment fit the claimed place, viewed against imagery from an appropriate date?
Those answers concern provenance and context. A video may be genuine footage but carry a false location, an incorrect date, or an exaggerated interpretation. Conversely, an inability to find an earlier copy does not prove that a video is original: mirroring, cropping, color changes, edits, and limited search coverage can all hide older appearances.
Keep observations separate from inferences. “A water tower appears behind a two-lane road” is an observation. “The clip was filmed in this town” is an inference that requires comparison with independent imagery. The final conclusion should be no stronger than the evidence supporting it.

1. Preserve the claim and the original context
Start before downloading frames or running a search. Record exactly what was claimed and preserve the page as you found it.
Make a claim record
- Copy the video URL and the account or channel name.
- Record the caption, hashtags, comments that add factual details, and the publication time displayed by the platform.
- Write the precise claim about place, date, event, and object. “Filmed over the coast in 2019” is materially different from “posted in 2019.”
- Note whether the post identifies the uploader as the filmer, an eyewitness, a news organization, or merely a re-poster.
- Save a lawful working copy of the file and retain the untouched original separately from any crops, screenshots, or converted versions.
Preserving context matters because platforms can change captions, remove comments, recompress video, or display a different timestamp to viewers in another time zone. A repost’s upload time is a publication event, not proof of when the camera recorded the scene.
Protect a chain of custody
Give each downloaded file a clear name and keep a simple log of when you obtained it, from which page, and whether you altered it. Perform analysis on a duplicate. If you extract frames, add the frame time or position to the filename so another person can return to the same moment in the clip. Never replace the original with an enhanced or stabilized copy.

2. Find the earliest discoverable appearance
The objective is not merely to find a similar picture. It is to determine whether the clip, or a recognizable part of it, appeared earlier and whether later posts changed its caption.
Choose useful frames
- Watch the entire clip once without pausing so you understand its sequence and any cuts.
- Extract several sharp frames from different moments: an opening frame, a clear view of the object, a frame with background structures, and a transition or end card.
- Include frames containing signs, logos, distinctive skyline shapes, road layouts, captions, or watermarks. Avoid relying only on a blurred frame of the alleged object.
- Keep both the full frame and a crop of the distinctive feature. A full frame preserves context; a crop can help a search service recognize a small landmark.
Run searches and compare copies
Submit the selected stills to more than one reverse-image service when possible, then search distinctive wording from captions and on-screen text. Search results are leads, not verdicts. Open candidate matches and compare them side by side:
- Does the camera movement, timing, and sequence match?
- Are the same compression artifacts, scratches, flashes, or obstructions visible?
- Is one version mirrored, cropped, color-shifted, slowed, or overlaid with new text?
- Does the candidate carry an earlier timestamp, or is it simply another post made later?
- Does an earlier copy provide a different location or a source attribution?
Bellingcat’s Advanced Guide on Verifying Video Content notes that mirroring, cropping, color changes, and other transformations can defeat reverse-image matching. A successful match can reveal reuse; a failed search establishes neither originality nor a new recording.
Build a reuse timeline
Arrange copies by the earliest reliable publication date you can document. Mark which versions are exact duplicates and which contain edits. If a 2024 post reproduces a clip that was publicly available in 2018, the 2024 date cannot be presented as the recording date. If the earliest copy is itself undated or has been deleted, say so rather than assigning a capture year.

3. Inspect frames and surrounding context
Frame-level examination often answers questions that a whole-video watch misses. The InVID verification workflow combines keyframe and duplicate analysis with social searches, contextual checks, metadata, location and time assessment, historical weather, and frame inspection.
Look beyond the object
Record what the scene shows independently of the UFO claim:
- Language, spelling, road signs, flags, storefronts, and vehicle markings.
- Building materials, rooflines, utility poles, street furniture, road markings, and terrain.
- Sun angle, shadows, cloud cover, haze, precipitation, and apparent season.
- Editing clues such as abrupt cuts, inserted audio, captions that do not align with speech, or a watermark appearing only partway through.
Use several frames for each observation. A single apparent sign can be distorted by perspective or compression; a repeated feature across the sequence is more dependable.
Separate visual facts from interpretation
Describe the object conservatively. Shape, apparent motion, brightness, and relation to the horizon are observable; “nonhuman craft,” “defying physics,” or “stationary in a hurricane” are interpretations that need independent support. Camera shake, zooming, autofocus, rolling-shutter distortion, and parallax can make ordinary movement appear unusual. Do not infer distance or speed unless the scene supplies a reliable scale and reference.
Check whether the context is internally consistent
Ask whether weather, vegetation, architecture, language, and lighting can coexist at the claimed place and time. A winter caption paired with lush foliage, or a supposedly local account using a different region’s road signs, is a contradiction to investigate. It is not conclusive by itself: footage can be old, staged, or filmed elsewhere.
4. Establish the date without confusing upload and capture
A platform timestamp identifies when that account published a post. It does not establish when the camera recorded the scene. Date verification therefore combines file information with independent, dated context.
Inspect available file metadata
Examine the metadata attached to the file you obtained, if any. It may contain creation information, device details, or location fields, but social platforms commonly strip or rewrite metadata during processing. Treat a present value as a clue that must agree with the footage and outside evidence; treat a missing value as an absence of evidence, not evidence of fakery. InVID’s project materials describe metadata inspection as one part of a broader verification workflow, not a standalone date proof.

Use contextual date checks
- Compare the claimed event with historical weather for the proposed place and date. Cloud type, rainfall, snow cover, visibility, and wind effects can support or conflict with the claim.
- Check whether signs, construction, vegetation, vehicles, or other changeable features existed at the alleged time.
- Compare the video with satellite or street-level imagery whose acquisition dates are known. A new building visible in the clip cannot be used to support a date before that building existed.
- Look for earlier copies, news reports, or eyewitness posts that independently predate the current upload.
Each check has limits. Weather records may cover a nearby station rather than the exact location, and imagery may be captured months or years before or after the event. State the coverage and date of every comparison.

Use calibrated language such as “uploaded on,” “no earlier public copy located,” “metadata is absent,” or “context is consistent with.” Reserve “recorded on” for cases supported by direct evidence, such as a trustworthy contemporaneous source or a file whose metadata survives and is corroborated. If the evidence supports only a range, report the range.
5. Test the claimed location through geolocation
Geolocation is a matching exercise: identify multiple distinctive features in the video, then find the same arrangement in independent imagery. One resemblance is rarely enough.
Inventory distinctive features
Pause on the clearest frames and list features that could be tested:
- Building outlines, roof shapes, towers, silos, bridges, or unusual signs.
- Road direction, intersections, lane counts, barriers, rail lines, and shoreline curves.
- Hills, ridges, tree lines, water bodies, and the skyline’s relative heights.
- Fixed objects that provide scale or orientation, such as poles, walls, or distinctive street furniture.
Prioritize features that are both distinctive and likely to remain unchanged. A generic tree or cloud is weak evidence; a rare building beside a forked road is much stronger.
Recommended Free Tools
Compare several independent alignments
- Use a map to identify candidate roads, structures, or terrain suggested by the frame.
- Check satellite imagery for the same outlines and spatial relationships.
- Use ground-level imagery where available to compare façade details, signs, poles, and road geometry.
- Test the camera’s likely direction: the order and relative position of landmarks should fit a single viewpoint, not merely appear somewhere in the same city.
- Record both matches and mismatches. A claimed site that fits one building but not the road orientation remains unverified.
Bellingcat’s A Beginner’s Guide to Geolocating Videos presents this feature-matching approach. Its Searching the Earth: Essential Geolocation Tools for Verification guidance also emphasizes checking imagery dates and coverage. A satellite image taken before a new structure was built, or after a road was rerouted, can produce a false contradiction or a false match.
Account for imagery dates and coverage
Write down the acquisition date, or the available date range, for each satellite or street-level image. Coverage can be incomplete, and some locations have no recent ground imagery. If a feature is absent from an older image, say only that it was not visible then; do not conclude that the video location is impossible without accounting for construction, seasonal concealment, image quality, and viewpoint.

Use the object’s apparent motion carefully
Background geometry can help distinguish camera movement from object movement. Compare the alleged object with fixed landmarks across consecutive frames. Parallax, zoom, stabilization, and rolling-shutter effects can change apparent motion, especially when the object is far away. This analysis can test a claim about movement; it does not identify the object’s nature.
Which verification methods answer which question?
| Method | Best for | What it can reveal | Important limitations | How to check it independently |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reverse search of keyframes | Source and reuse | Earlier copies, related stills, altered versions | Mirroring, cropping, color changes, compression, and limited indexing can hide matches | Open the candidate and compare sequence, timing, artifacts, and captions |
| Duplicate or near-duplicate video search | Source history | Reposts and versions with changed text or audio | Platform access and file support vary; edits may defeat matching | Compare the full sequence and document each publication date |
| Frame and context inspection | Internal consistency | Signs, language, weather, architecture, editing, and landmarks | Blur, perspective, and selective framing can mislead | Use several frames and compare with outside records |
| File metadata | Additional date, device, or location clues | Values that survived file handling | Metadata may be stripped, rewritten, incomplete, or falsified | Check against upload history, visual context, weather, and imagery dates |
| Historical weather | Date plausibility | Whether conditions fit a claimed place and time | Nearby observations may not represent the exact scene | State the station or area and compare more than one visible condition |
| Map, satellite, and ground imagery | Location | Matching buildings, roads, terrain, and skyline geometry | Imagery dates, viewpoint, seasonal change, and coverage affect results | Match multiple fixed features and record imagery dates |
InVID describes a combined workflow rather than a single decisive test. Its verification plugin and project availability can change, so confirm that a particular feature and platform still work before relying on it. The same principle applies to any reverse-search or mapping service.
How to weigh conflicting evidence
Make an evidence table while you work. For every clue, record the observation, source, date, whether it supports or conflicts with the claim, and how independently it was obtained.
| Evidence type | Example wording | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Direct observation | “A distinctive three-arch structure appears in frames 18–24.” | What is visibly present |
| Independent match | “The same structure and road bend align in satellite imagery acquired in 2021.” | Possible location, subject to date and viewpoint limits |
| Publication record | “An identical sequence was posted by another account in 2019.” | Earlier public appearance and likely reuse |
| Conflict | “The claimed date has snow, but the clip shows green foliage; no local weather record resolves the discrepancy.” | Uncertainty or a reason to weaken the claim |
Do not let several copies of the same assertion count as independent corroboration. Ten accounts repeating one caption provide one underlying claim unless they supply separate files, witnesses, or records. Conversely, one high-quality contradiction can outweigh many vague similarities.
Case example: the “Middle East Object” DoD video
Bellingcat’s 2023 analysis of a U.S. Department of Defense video titled “Middle East Object” illustrates the method. The investigation geolocated the footage to an area northeast of Deir ez-Zor and compared visible scene features with satellite imagery. It also discussed a balloon as a possible mundane explanation.
The value of this example is procedural, not sensational. The geolocation and contextual comparison tested where the camera likely was and what ordinary explanation might fit the scene. They did not establish a universal conclusion about UFO videos, and they did not turn a plausible explanation into proof. Apply the same discipline to every clip: document the site match, note the imagery date, separate what the frame shows from what the object might be, and state what remains unresolved.

Common failure modes and how to correct them
Using the newest upload as the capture date
Why it fails: Reposts can appear years after recording. Correction: build a publication timeline and label each timestamp as an upload or recording claim.

Treating a reverse-search hit as authentication
Why it fails: A match may be a cropped or altered copy with a false caption. Correction: compare the entire sequence, audio, edits, and earliest documented appearance.
Treating a failed search as proof of originality
Why it fails: Transformations and unindexed platforms hide older copies. Correction: search multiple distinctive frames, caption text, and alternate spellings, then report the limits of the search.
Trusting metadata without corroboration
Why it fails: Metadata can be missing, rewritten, or inconsistent with the file’s history. Correction: test it against weather, visual context, and dated imagery.
Geolocating from one generic landmark
Why it fails: Similar buildings, roads, or skylines occur in many places. Correction: require several fixed features whose alignment fits one viewpoint.
Ignoring imagery acquisition dates
Why it fails: Landscapes and buildings change. Correction: record when each comparison image was captured and account for construction, demolition, seasonal effects, and coverage gaps.
Overstating what the result means
Why it fails: Authentic footage can be miscaptioned or misinterpreted. Correction: conclude at the level supported: reused, location consistent, date unknown, claim weakened, or unresolved.
Legal, ethical, and practical precautions
- Analyze and retain copies only when lawful and appropriate. Respect copyright, privacy, platform terms, and requests to remove sensitive personal information.
- Do not publish private addresses, faces, license plates, or identifying details merely because they appear in a frame.
- Preserve the unaltered file and explain any enhancement, stabilization, cropping, or transcription used for analysis.
- Do not contact alleged witnesses aggressively or present an unverified location as fact. A wrong geolocation can expose people to harassment.
- When reporting a result, identify the source and date of each external comparison so another investigator can reproduce it.
A repeatable verification worksheet
- Claim: Copy the exact caption, account, URL, displayed publication time, and claimed place and date.
- Preservation: Save a lawful copy, keep the original untouched, and log acquisition details.
- Frames: Extract clear keyframes from the beginning, middle, end, and any landmark-rich moment.
- Search: Run reverse-image and duplicate searches; search distinctive caption and on-screen text.
- Timeline: Arrange exact and altered copies by earliest documented publication.
- Context: Record language, signs, weather, architecture, terrain, editing, and visible fixed features.
- Date: Inspect available metadata, compare historical weather, and check dated imagery and contemporaneous records.
- Location: Match multiple buildings, roads, terrain features, and skyline relationships in map, satellite, and ground imagery.
- Conflicts: List every mismatch and explain whether it could result from viewpoint, season, image date, editing, or a false claim.
- Conclusion: State what is established, what is probable, what is merely consistent, and what remains unknown. Do not convert provenance evidence into a claim about extraterrestrial origin.
How to write the final finding
A useful finding is specific enough for another reader to audit. Identify the earliest appearance you located, distinguish it from the likely recording date, describe the features that support or contradict the claimed location, and name important gaps such as missing metadata or unavailable imagery. Suitable conclusions include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- “The clip is an older recording reposted with a later caption.”
- “The claimed location is consistent with several fixed features, but the recording date is not established.”
- “The location claim is weakened because the road orientation and skyline do not match dated imagery.”
- “The available evidence is insufficient to determine the source, date, or location.”
That level of precision is the goal. Provenance, date, and location can often be tested even when the object itself remains unidentified, and a well-supported uncertainty is more accurate than a dramatic but unsupported verdict.
