While a show is playing, check your TV’s live signal or input information for 2160p or 3840 × 2160. That indicates a 4K-format signal is reaching the TV, but it does not prove the show was filmed or streamed in native 4K: a streaming device can upscale lower-resolution video. To check the program itself, confirm that the exact title or channel is available in 4K, then verify the source device and every connection in the signal path.

What counts as a 4K signal?

4K UHD is a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels, compared with 1920 × 1080 for 1080p Full HD. TVs and devices may also call it UHD or 2160p. A TV being 4K-capable does not mean every program it displays is 4K: the specific content, subscription, playback device, and connections must all support the format.

Keep two questions separate: what resolution is arriving at the TV, and what resolution the program itself is being delivered in. A TV’s live input information can help answer the first; the service’s title or channel details help answer the second.

Check the live signal while the program is playing

  1. Start the movie, episode, channel, or event you want to check.
  2. Open the TV’s Info, Status, Signal Information, or input-information display, if your model offers one. Look for 2160p, 3840 × 2160, or a clearly identified UHD/4K input signal.
  3. If the TV does not show the live resolution, open the connected device’s video or display-output settings. For example, Roku calls this setting “Display type” and can automatically detect a supported resolution or let you choose one manually.

A 4K output setting on a streaming box, game console, disc player, or cable box confirms the format it is configured to send—not that the current program is native 4K. TV controls and menus vary by model, so consult the manual for the exact set rather than relying on a universal remote shortcut. For the UHD broadcast setup described by LG, the set-top box should be set to 2160p at 60 fps.

Confirm the specific title or channel is offered in 4K

Check the service’s details for the exact movie, episode, live channel, or event. Look for 4K or UHD labels; HDR may also be listed, but it is a separate picture feature and does not establish resolution. Some services require a qualifying subscription for 4K content. Google’s guidance for its specified Chromecast/Google TV setup recommends at least 20 Mbps, while Roku says its 4K Ultra HD setup may need up to 25 Mbps. These are vendor-specific recommendations, not universal guarantees or thresholds for every service.

Check the complete HDMI path

For an external source, the signal travels through each connection between the device and TV. If it passes through an AVR or soundbar, those devices and the HDMI ports used on them also matter. Roku says that, for its documented setup, every device in the chain needs HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2; if a link does not meet those requirements, playback may be limited to 720p or 1080p. Google also lists a compatible 4K TV and an HDCP 2.2 port for its specified device setup. Requirements can differ by equipment and format, so check the manuals for the actual source, TV, and intermediary devices.

Check the TV’s setting for the connected HDMI port

Some TVs require an enhanced HDMI format to be enabled for the port in use. The setting names and paths below are examples from manufacturer guidance; menus can vary by model, software version, and port.

If the signal is not showing 4K

  • The TV reports 1080p or lower: Confirm the program is offered in 4K, check the source device’s output setting, and verify the HDMI port and any intermediary devices in the path.
  • The source is set to 4K but playback is lower or unstable: Check the TV’s setting for the connected HDMI port and inspect each connection, including an AVR or soundbar. Then verify the cable against the requirements for your equipment.
  • You are considering a replacement HDMI cable: Roku recommends a Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if the compatible Roku device’s included cable cannot be used, and notes that older or inadequately labeled cables may not support some 4K HDR formats at 60 fps. Follow the requirements for your source and TV; a separate cable is not needed when a Streaming Stick connects directly to a compatible TV.

A cable can address a connection limitation, but it cannot turn an HD source or an HD program into native 4K.
