Before you sign a Solana transaction, verify two separate things: that the destination address is the exact address supplied by the recipient, and that the destination account is suitable for the asset you are sending. A correctly formatted address does not prove who controls it. Native SOL should normally go to a System Program wallet (or an unfunded on-curve address that will become one); an SPL token must go to a token account for the exact token mint. Solana warns that sending funds to the wrong address can result in permanent loss.
Use the recipient’s address from a trusted channel, compare the complete string, classify the on-chain account, check the asset and mint, and review everything again in your wallet immediately before signing. The workflow below separates checks that establish technical validity from the separate human confirmation needed to establish recipient identity.
What an address check can—and cannot—prove
Solana wallet addresses are public, unique and permanent. Solana’s payment overview describes them as 32-byte public keys: https://solana.com/docs/payments/how-payments-work. That makes an address a useful destination identifier, but the string alone does not tell you whether an account currently exists, which program owns it, or what type of account it is.

It cannot, by itself, establish that the address belongs to the person, company or exchange you intended to pay. A valid-looking address, a successful lookup, previous transactions, or a transaction that appears in an explorer are not proof of recipient identity. Confirm ownership through a trusted channel with the intended recipient.

Verify the destination in the right order
1. Obtain the address directly from the recipient
Ask the intended recipient to provide the address through a channel you already trust. For a person, that might be a previously verified conversation; for a business, use a contact route you have independently confirmed rather than relying on an unexpected message or a copied address in an invoice.
Compare the entire address character by character with the value you are about to paste into your wallet. Do not rely on the first or last few characters alone. Keep the original message available while you perform the comparison, and do not approve a last-minute replacement address without separately confirming the change.
This step addresses identity, which blockchain account data cannot establish. Technical checks come next.
2. Confirm which asset you are sending
Choose the verification path for the actual asset:

The distinction matters because a native SOL transfer and an SPL-token transfer are validated by different account rules. Solana’s official verification flow is documented at https://solana.com/docs/payments/send-payments/verify-address.

3. Check the account on the network
An address is only a public key until you inspect the corresponding account information. Fetch the destination from the Solana network and check its owner and account type. The account’s owner is a Solana program, not necessarily the person who gave you the address. Classifying that owner tells you what the account can do with incoming funds.
If the address is unfamiliar, off-curve, program-owned, or an unfamiliar token account, stop and ask the recipient to confirm that exact destination and asset. Do not infer safety from an account’s balance or transaction history.
4. Review the transaction immediately before signing
In your wallet, verify the destination address, asset name, token mint where shown, amount and network. Expand transaction details instead of approving a shortened display without checking the full value. If any field differs from the address or asset you confirmed, reject the request and start again from a trusted source.
Understand on-curve, off-curve and program-owned addresses
On-curve addresses
A normal keypair produces an Ed25519 public key on the curve. The corresponding private key can authorize signatures, so an on-curve address can represent a standard wallet. An unfunded on-curve address may not yet have an account allocated on-chain; it can become a System Program wallet when it receives SOL under the conditions described in Solana’s verification guidance.
Off-curve addresses and PDAs
Program-derived addresses (PDAs) are deliberately off the Ed25519 curve. They have no corresponding private key and cannot sign transactions like a normal wallet. Their deriving program controls operations involving them. An off-curve address is not automatically malicious or unusable—many legitimate protocols use PDAs—but it is not a normal personal wallet.

For a payment to an off-curve address, obtain explicit confirmation from the recipient that the program is intended to receive the asset and that the program can later release or use it. Never treat curve status as proof of who controls the destination or as a complete account classification.
Program-owned accounts
Solana accounts can be owned by the System Program, a token program, a mint-related program, or another application program. Ownership determines which program may modify the account’s data and authorize movement of assets. A program-owned account may accept a transaction at the protocol level while still lacking a path for the recipient to recover the funds.
How to verify a native SOL destination
Use a System Program wallet as the default
For ordinary SOL payments, the safe destination described in Solana’s official guide is a System Program wallet. An unfunded on-curve address can also be appropriate when it is the recipient’s intended wallet and will become a wallet after funding. Confirm that the address is not a token account, mint account, PDA or unrelated program account.
Why a successful SOL transfer can still be a loss
A System Program transfer can add lamports to other account types, including token accounts, mint accounts, program accounts and PDAs. The transfer may therefore succeed without producing an error. The owning program controls whether those lamports can ever be moved, so a mistaken transfer may be unrecoverable. Solana’s documentation states: “Sending funds to the wrong address can result in permanent loss.”
SOL pre-sign checks
- Confirm the full address with the intended recipient through a trusted channel.
- Confirm that the wallet is sending native SOL, not an SPL token with a similar name.
- Check that the destination is a System Program wallet or the explicitly confirmed unfunded on-curve recipient address.
- Pause if the account is off-curve, PDA-controlled or owned by another program.
- Review the destination and amount again in the signing screen.
How to verify an SPL-token destination
Find the token account, not just the wallet address
SPL tokens are held in token accounts. The recipient may give you a token-account address directly, or a wallet address from which the appropriate token account is derived. Establish which form you received before sending. A token account is owned by the relevant token program and records the mint it can hold.

Match the token account to the exact mint
Token names and ticker symbols are not sufficient because different assets can use similar names. Check that the destination is a token account and that its recorded mint is the mint for the asset you selected. A token account for one mint is not a valid recipient for another. The Token Programs reject mismatched transfer accounts, so a wrong-mint transfer should fail rather than silently becoming a different token transfer.
Do not send tokens to a mint account
A mint account defines an SPL token; it is not a token-holding account for a recipient. If the fetched account is a mint account, stop. Ask the recipient for the correct token account or wallet address and confirm the exact mint before retrying.
When the recipient has no token account yet
A recipient wallet may not yet have an associated token account for the asset. Solana’s guide describes deriving and creating that account, which is primarily relevant to payment implementers and may require rent funding. If your wallet offers to create an account, verify that the recipient wallet and mint are correct and understand which party will pay the required rent. Do not substitute a random account merely because it accepts the transaction request.
SPL-token pre-sign checks
- Confirm the recipient’s full wallet or token-account address.
- Confirm the exact token mint, not only the displayed name or ticker.
- Verify that the destination is a token account rather than a mint account.
- Check that the token account’s mint matches the asset you selected.
- Get explicit recipient confirmation for an unfamiliar program-controlled or off-curve destination.
- Review the token, mint, destination and amount in the wallet’s final approval screen.
A practical account-type decision table

Common verification mistakes and what to do
“The string has the right shape, so it must be safe”
Formatting only tells you that a value may be an address. It does not identify the owner, account type or asset compatibility. Fetch account information and confirm the recipient through a trusted channel.

On-chain activity demonstrates activity, not identity. A reused address can belong to another party, and an account can be controlled by a program. Treat explorer data as technical context, not proof of recipient ownership.

“The transaction succeeded, so the funds arrived safely”
Success means the network accepted the transaction. Native SOL can be transferred to an unsuitable program-owned account without an error. If the destination was wrong, the protocol may provide no reversal mechanism.
“The token name matches, so the mint must match”
Names and tickers are not unique identifiers. Verify the mint recorded by the destination token account against the mint selected in your wallet.
“The recipient sent a replacement address at the last moment”
Stop the payment and verify the change through a separate trusted channel. A last-minute substitution is a reason to re-check identity, not a reason to hurry.

- Reject or close the signing request.
- Record the address and asset details you were about to use so you can explain the discrepancy.
- Contact the intended recipient through a trusted channel and ask for the complete address again.
- Reclassify the replacement address on the network, including its owner and token mint where relevant.
- Create a new transaction only after the destination and asset pass both the technical and identity checks.
If a transaction has already been confirmed on-chain, do not assume a wallet, explorer or recipient can reverse it. Recovery depends on who controls the destination account and whether its program provides a way to return the asset; the verification sources do not establish a general reversal process.
Implementer notes for businesses and payment builders
If you are building a payment flow rather than making a one-off wallet transfer, separate the recipient’s wallet address from the token account used for a particular mint. Your application should fetch account information, verify the owning program, distinguish token accounts from mint accounts, and check the token account’s mint before constructing a transfer.
When the recipient has no associated token account, the flow may derive and create one and may need rent funding. Make the wallet that pays those costs and the recipient wallet explicit in the user interface. For native SOL, do not treat “any account that accepts lamports” as a valid payment destination: require a System Program wallet or a deliberately confirmed program destination with a documented withdrawal path.
Final pre-sign checklist
- Identity: Did the intended recipient provide this exact full address through a trusted channel?
- Asset: Are you sending native SOL or an SPL token, and did you select the correct one?
- Account type: Is a SOL destination a System Program wallet? Is an SPL destination a token account?
- Mint: For an SPL token, does the destination token account contain the exact mint you intend to send?
- Program control: Is the address off-curve, a PDA or otherwise program-owned? If so, has the recipient explicitly confirmed it?
- Wallet review: Do the final signing details show the same destination, asset, mint and amount you verified?
- Small test: If the recipient and your operational process support it, agree in advance on a small test transfer; treat that as an operational precaution, not proof of identity.
Only sign when both parts of the question have a satisfactory answer: the address is technically suitable for the asset, and the intended recipient has confirmed that it is theirs. If either part remains uncertain, do not send.
