Inspect the exact serialized transaction message on a trusted screen before approving it. Confirm the fee payer, lifetime value, every program and account, signer and writable permissions, instruction order, and instruction data. Translate each instruction into a concrete action involving specific recipients, amounts, token accounts, authorities, or approvals. If your offline signer shows opaque or incomplete data, decline to sign: a signature authorizes message bytes, not the description supplied by a connected app.

What an offline Solana signature actually authorizes

A Solana transaction is a structured message plus one or more signatures. The signature does not approve a sentence such as “send 1 SOL” or certify that a website’s transaction summary is honest. It covers the exact serialized message presented to the signer.

Solana’s Partial Signing documentation states: “Every signature covers the serialized transaction message.” That message includes the fee payer, a recent blockhash or durable nonce, the ordered account list, account permissions, program IDs, and the instruction data interpreted by each program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing any of those bytes creates a different message. Replacing the blockhash, changing the fee payer, reordering instructions, substituting an account, or editing an amount invalidates signatures collected for the original message. Solana also warns: “Do not deserialize a message, change it, and expect previously collected signatures to remain valid.”

Offline signing separates approval from broadcasting. A connected computer or wallet can construct a transaction, an offline device can sign frozen bytes without network access, and a connected system can later submit the fully signed transaction. That separation protects private-key material, but it does not make an unexpected transaction safe. You still have to understand what the bytes instruct programs to do.

The verification checklist

Use this order every time. Do not approve merely because a familiar application labels the transaction as a transfer or because simulation succeeded.

  • Source: Obtain the transaction from the application, wallet, or coordinator you intentionally selected, then inspect the transaction message itself rather than relying only on its summary.
  • Fee payer: Confirm the exact public key paying the network fee and that this payer is expected. The fee payer is part of the message and must sign.
  • Lifetime: Record the recent blockhash or durable nonce. Understand when it expires and whether the offline process can finish before then.
  • Programs: Check every program ID against the operation you intend to perform. An unfamiliar program can execute instructions unrelated to the visible action.
  • Accounts: Check every account address, including source and destination token accounts, authorities, associated accounts, system accounts, and program-derived accounts. Verify which accounts are signers and which are writable.
  • Instruction order: Read every instruction in sequence. Earlier instructions can create state, change authority, or consume a nonce before later instructions run.
  • Instruction data: Decode exact amounts, mints, recipients, limits, authorities, and options. A generic “contract interaction” label is not enough.
  • Trusted display: Compare the transaction with the hardware signer’s own screen when it can decode the fields. If it reports an unsupported, unknown, or blind-signing transaction, stop.
  • Returned signatures: Verify each signature against the expected public key and the unchanged message bytes before broadcasting.
  • Final assembly: Confirm that every required signer slot contains a valid signature, then submit that exact transaction without rebuilding it.

Step 1: Freeze and obtain the transaction you intend to sign

Use the intended transaction source

Start from the wallet or application you deliberately opened. Export or transfer the unsigned transaction through your established offline workflow. Keep the original bytes available so you can compare what the connected system produced with what the signer receives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A web page’s title, button text, and human-readable summary are not authoritative. A compromised page can display one action while constructing another. The message supplied to the signer is the object that matters.

Identify the transaction version

Solana supports legacy transactions and version 0 transactions. Your parser, wallet, and hardware device must all support the version you are reviewing. Do not convert a message between versions during review unless every signer is instructed to sign the resulting replacement message; conversion changes the bytes.

Record the message before any signatures are added

Save a hash or byte-for-byte copy of the unsigned message according to your operational procedures. The purpose is to detect accidental rebuilding between review, signing, signature verification, and submission. A transaction object that is deserialized and reconstructed can differ in account ordering, blockhash, or serialization even when its high-level fields look similar.

Step 2: Check the fee payer and account permissions

Fee payer

Read the fee payer’s full public key, not only a shortened address. Make sure it is the account you authorized to spend SOL for fees. Because it is a required signer, an unexpected fee payer can indicate that the message was replaced or that another party is trying to make you authorize a different transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Signer accounts

List every account marked as a signer. A signer permission means the corresponding private key is authorizing the message, even if that account is not sending SOL. Confirm why each signer is needed: a wallet owner, multisignature participant, authority, delegate, or durable-nonce authority should have a clear role.

Writable accounts

List every writable account and associate it with the instruction that can modify it. Writable status is a capability, not proof of malicious behavior, but unexpected writable accounts deserve a stop-and-investigate decision. Pay particular attention to token accounts, mint accounts, owner or delegate authorities, and accounts holding program state.

Addresses and aliases

Verify complete addresses using a trusted copy-and-compare process. Names shown by an address book or application can be changed, and two token accounts can belong to different owners while representing the same mint. Confirm the mint, account owner, and destination address separately.

Step 3: Inspect the lifetime value

Recent blockhash

Most Solana transactions use a recent blockhash to establish a finite validity window. The blockhash is part of the signed message. If it expires while people are reviewing or transporting an offline transaction, you cannot replace it and reuse the existing signatures. A new blockhash produces a new message that all required signers must sign again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before signing, ask who will submit the transaction and how long review is expected to take. Multi-party approvals, air-gapped transfers, and manual verification can outlast the ordinary lifetime. The workflow should expose an expiry failure clearly rather than silently rebuilding the transaction.

Durable nonce

A durable nonce substitutes a stored nonce for a recent blockhash so a transaction can be signed offline and submitted later. The durable-nonce transaction must place the nonce-advance instruction first. Once the nonce is advanced or consumed, the old signed transaction is no longer reusable.

Durable nonces add operational requirements: protect the nonce account, use the correct nonce authority, and ensure the submission process does not consume the nonce unexpectedly. Solana’s current documentation warns that the durable nonce mechanism may be deprecated in a future release, so confirm current wallet and network guidance before designing a new process around it.

Never “refresh” after signing

If an operator fetches a fresh blockhash after an offline signature is returned, that is not a harmless maintenance step. It changes the message. Reconstruct the entire transaction and collect every required signature again, or submit the original before it expires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Read every instruction in order

Do not stop at the first instruction or at a wallet label such as “token transfer.” Programs execute the ordered instruction list. Read the decoded operation, program ID, accounts, and data for each entry.

SOL transfers

For a system-program transfer, verify the source account, destination account, and exact lamport amount. Convert the amount to SOL for human review, but retain the original integer value to avoid decimal or rounding mistakes. Confirm that no preceding instruction changes the account state or authority used by the transfer.

SPL-token transfers

Verify the token mint, source token account, destination token account, token authority, and raw token amount. A destination address displayed by a dApp may be a token account rather than the owner’s main wallet address. Confirm that the token account belongs to the intended recipient and that its mint matches the asset you mean to send.

Approvals and delegations

Token approval instructions can grant another authority the ability to spend tokens later. Check the delegate address and exact allowance, including whether the allowance is effectively unlimited. A transaction that appears to prepare a swap may also authorize a delegate; treat that permission as a separate consequential action.

Account creation and closure

Look for instructions that create, initialize, reassign, close, or reclaim accounts. Verify who receives reclaimed rent, which owner or program controls a newly created account, and whether closure removes a token account you still need.

Program-specific instructions

For swaps, lending, staking, governance, or other programs, identify every input, output, limit, authority, and fee account. Check minimum received or maximum paid values where present. If the signer cannot decode those fields, obtain a transaction format and device workflow that exposes them instead of relying on a website’s explanation.

Step 5: Use the offline signer’s trusted display correctly

A hardware device keeps private keys away from the connected computer, but it cannot decide whether an opaque message reflects your intent. Its security value depends on what it can show you before approval.

Human-readable review

On the device, compare the fee payer, account addresses, program or operation, amounts, token mint, and permissions with your independent review. Scroll through every page; do not approve after checking only the first screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blind signing

If the device says the transaction is not decoded, presents generic data, or leaves a consequential field unclear, treat the request as blind signing. Decline unless you have a separate, trusted procedure that proves exactly what the instruction data means and accepts the additional risk. Ledger’s developer guidance recommends keeping blind signing off by default and warning when a transaction cannot be fully decoded.

Device compatibility

Device behavior varies by firmware, wallet application, network, instruction type, and transaction version. Ledger’s Wallet Provider documentation describes signing for legacy and version 0 Solana transactions and a review flow that fetches a fresh finalized blockhash after approval. That is a Ledger-specific workflow, not a general rule for every offline signer. Confirm current compatibility and understand whether the provider is signing the reviewed message or constructing an updated one.

Ledger identifies Nano S Plus, Nano X, and Nano Gen5 as devices used with its Solana wallet software for SOL and SPL-token management. This is vendor information, not independent testing or a ranking of hardware wallets. Whatever device you use, unreadable transaction data is not made safe merely by appearing on a hardware screen.

Step 6: Verify signatures before broadcasting

Keep the message immutable

After the offline device returns a signature, retain the exact message bytes that were displayed and signed. Do not deserialize and rebuild the transaction before verification. If your transport format requires reconstruction, compare the resulting serialized message byte-for-byte with the frozen original.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check each signer

For every required signer, verify that the signature validates against the expected public key and the frozen message. A valid signature from the wrong key is not a valid approval. In a multisignature workflow, check that each signature is attached to the correct signer position.

Broadcast only the fully signed transaction

Confirm that all required signatures are present and valid. Submit the assembled transaction without changing the blockhash, fee payer, account list, instruction order, or instruction data. If any check fails, rebuild the intended message and collect signatures again.

Offline signing workflows compared

Workflow characteristic What to verify Risk or limitation
Legacy transaction Device and wallet decode the legacy message and all instructions. Compatibility is generally straightforward, but expiry still applies.
Version 0 transaction Every parser and signer supports version 0 address-table and account behavior used by the message. A device may show an unsupported or incomplete review even when the online wallet displays a summary.
Ordinary recent blockhash Review, transport, signing, and submission fit inside the validity window. Expiry requires a replacement message and new signatures.
Durable nonce Nonce-advance instruction is first; nonce authority and account are correct. The nonce can be consumed once, and current Solana guidance warns the feature may be deprecated in a future release.
Provider refresh after approval The provider explains that it displays the transaction, then obtains a fresh blockhash and signs the updated message. This is provider-specific. Do not assume an already collected signature remains valid after a refresh.
Blind signing A separate trusted interpretation proves every consequential instruction and field. Opaque data prevents normal device-level confirmation; declining is the safer default.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A worked review example

Suppose an application says it will send 2.5 SOL to a colleague. The correct review is not “the screen says 2.5 SOL, so approve.” Check the fee payer and sender account, then inspect the system-program transfer for the colleague’s full destination key and exact lamport amount. Confirm there are no preceding instructions that approve a token delegate, create an unexpected account, or alter an authority. Verify the recent blockhash will remain valid while the offline device is transported. Finally, validate the returned signature against the same message before submitting.

For a token swap, expand the review: identify the input mint and source token account, output mint and destination account, swap program, pool or market accounts, authority accounts, maximum input, minimum output, and all fees. If any of those values are hidden behind “approve swap” or “program interaction,” stop rather than treating simulation or the website label as proof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes and recovery

The blockhash expired

Do not edit the signed transaction. Construct a new transaction with a current blockhash, compare the complete message again, and obtain every required signature for the replacement.

The device cannot decode the transaction

Reject the request. Update only through a trusted, documented workflow, or use a transaction format and signer that exposes the required fields. Do not approve blind data because the connected wallet appears familiar.

A signature is attached to the wrong signer

Discard the assembled transaction, restore the frozen message, place signatures in the correct required slots, and verify each public-key/signature pair. If the message changed during assembly, collect signatures again.

The fee payer is unexpected

Stop and identify who constructed the message. A different fee payer means different signed bytes and may indicate a replaced transaction. Rebuild from the intended source only after the payer arrangement is understood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The destination or amount differs

Do not rely on an address label or decimal conversion. Compare the full address, token mint, token-account owner, and raw amount. Recreate the intended transaction and restart signing if any value is wrong.

A nonce was already consumed

The old durable-nonce transaction cannot be reused. Check the nonce account and authority, create a new transaction with a current nonce, and repeat the complete review.

Operational rules for teams and multisignature approvals

  • Distribute the unsigned message through an authenticated channel and preserve a canonical byte copy.
  • Give every signer the same message identifier and transaction version.
  • Require each signer to record the fee payer, lifetime value, program IDs, destinations, amounts, and permission changes they checked.
  • Prevent software from silently replacing a blockhash or reordering instructions after one signer has approved.
  • Verify signatures centrally against the frozen message before submission.
  • Keep submission separate from approval so a signer cannot be pressured to broadcast immediately.
  • Document how an expired message, rejected blind-signing request, or consumed nonce is replaced.

Final decision rule

Approve only when the signer’s trusted display and your independent message review describe the same concrete actions, every required signer is known, the lifetime is viable, and the returned signature can be verified against unchanged bytes. If you cannot explain an instruction, account permission, recipient, amount, or authority, do not sign it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace a Solana blockhash after an offline signature is collected?

No. Replacing the blockhash changes the serialized message, so all required signers must sign the replacement transaction again.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a hardware wallet enough protection against a malicious Solana transaction?

No. It protects key custody, but you must still understand the message. If the device cannot decode consequential fields, decline the request instead of blind-signing.

What happens if a durable nonce is used twice?

After the nonce is advanced or consumed, the old signed transaction is no longer reusable. Create and review a new transaction with the current nonce.
