Verify a used Samsung Galaxy in two separate tracks: establish that the handset matches the Samsung model being advertised, then have the exact IMEI checked through a carrier or appropriate lost-and-stolen database for the country where it will be used. Start with identifiers shown by the phone itself, compare them with the box and purchase records, inspect the installed software and hardware, and check every IMEI on a dual-SIM model. No single consumer check is conclusive, so stop the transaction and use an authorized Samsung service center when the evidence conflicts.
Authenticity and blacklist status answer different questions
A genuine-phone check asks whether the physical handset is really a Samsung Galaxy of the represented model, with software and components that belong to that model. A blacklist check asks whether a network may refuse service to an IMEI because the device has been reported lost, stolen, faulty, or otherwise unsuitable for network use.
Those conditions can occur in any combination. A counterfeit can display a copied IMEI that looks valid. A genuine Galaxy can be blacklisted after a theft report or an unpaid-device dispute. A phone can be genuine and currently clear while still being reported later. Treat the two investigations as separate evidence trails rather than accepting a clean network result as proof of authenticity.

Prepare before you inspect or pay
Ask the seller to let you operate the phone, not just show a photograph of an IMEI label. If the seller will not allow the checks below, regard that refusal as a purchase risk. Record the listing, seller messages, invoice, receipt, and the IMEI(s) before handing over money. Do not rely on a seller-supplied screenshot: the relevant values must be read from the handset you are considering.

1. Find the IMEI and model on the phone itself
Samsung’s U.S. support instructions place the primary identifiers at Settings > About phone. The page normally shows the model name or model number, serial number, and one or more IMEIs. Exact labels and placement vary by model, software version, provider, and market.
Samsung support also documents other ways to retrieve the values. Depending on the device and region, they may appear in Samsung Members, on a label on the phone, on the retail box, in a carrier account, or in purchase records. Dial *#06# when the model supports that code; the resulting screen should be compared with the value in Settings, not used as the only source.
| Where the value comes from | How to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Settings > About phone | Use this as the main on-device record for model, serial number, and IMEI. | Menus differ by model, software, provider, and country. |
| Samsung Members | Use it as a second on-device confirmation when available. | Availability and displayed fields vary by market. |
*#06# |
Compare the pop-up IMEI with Settings. | The code is not supported on every model or network configuration. |
| Box, label, receipt, or invoice | Match the printed identifiers to the phone before buying. | Packaging can be mismatched or reused. |
| Carrier account or purchase record | Confirm what was originally sold or financed. | Records may describe a different handset if a replacement was issued. |
Write down every value exactly, including all 15 digits of each IMEI, leading zeroes, the model number, and the serial number. A one-digit transcription error can produce a false mismatch or a failed blacklist query.
2. Compare the phone with its paperwork and listing
Place the phone’s About phone screen beside the box label, invoice, and seller’s description. Check the model number and IMEI character by character. The serial number is useful corroboration where it is printed on the paperwork, but the IMEI is the identifier carriers use for network-status checks.

- Exact match: The on-device value agrees with the box or receipt. This supports the seller’s story but does not prove the hardware is genuine.
- Mismatch: Stop and ask why. The box may belong to another device, the handset may have been replaced, or the seller may be misrepresenting it. Do not proceed until the discrepancy is documented and independently resolved.
- Missing or altered value: A damaged label is not automatically evidence of fraud, but an IMEI that is absent, unreadable, duplicated across unrelated phones, or clearly tampered with requires carrier or service-center verification before purchase.
A copied genuine IMEI is a known limitation of identifier-only checks: counterfeit hardware can be assigned a number taken from a real Galaxy. Therefore, matching paperwork is corroboration, not authentication.
3. Confirm the model, software, and physical components
Samsung’s counterfeit guidance for Colombia recommends reviewing the IMEI, installed software, and components, while warning that no consumer self-check is 100% infallible. Use the model number shown in Settings to determine what the handset is supposed to contain, then compare that expectation with the physical phone and its software.
Check the model identity
- Read the exact model number in Settings > About phone, not only the marketing name such as “Galaxy S” or “Galaxy A.”
- Compare the model number with the seller’s listing, invoice, box, and the market in which the phone was sold.
- Check that the visible layout—camera arrangement, buttons, ports, display shape, and any model-specific component—corresponds to that model.
Review installed software
- Confirm that the phone identifies itself as the advertised Galaxy model in Settings.
- Review the installed Samsung software and the displayed software information for consistency with the claimed model and market.
- Look for contradictions between the model number and the software or features the seller claims are present.
Inspect components and condition
- Compare cameras, speakers, buttons, charging port, display, SIM tray, and other visible components with the represented model.
- Test the functions that matter to your purchase, including cellular connection, Wi-Fi, cameras, biometric or passcode operation, charging, and the SIM slots.
- On a model advertised with a distinctive component, such as a stylus or a particular camera system, verify that the component is physically present and behaves as expected.
These checks are evidence, not a laboratory authentication. A convincing interface can be imitated, and a genuine phone can contain replacement parts. When the model, software, and hardware do not line up, use an authorized Samsung service center in the phone’s market rather than trying to diagnose a counterfeit from appearance alone.

4. Understand what an IMEI can tell you
GSMA describes the IMEI as a 15-digit unique identifier. Its structure includes a Type Allocation Code (TAC), a serial number, and a check digit. TAC allocation associates an identifier range with a manufacturer, model, and selected device capabilities.

- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
That structure makes an IMEI useful for spotting inconsistencies. For example, a TAC-associated model that conflicts with the model shown by the phone deserves investigation. It does not, however, certify the physical handset: a copied IMEI can still have a plausible TAC, serial format, and check digit. Use the number to connect a particular handset to carrier records, while using software and component inspection to assess whether the object itself is the claimed Galaxy.
5. Check whether the IMEI is blacklisted
Use a checker or carrier that covers the country and network where the phone will operate. The most reliable practical step for a buyer is to give the intended carrier the exact IMEI and ask whether it can activate that device before payment.
Carrier verification
Ask the carrier’s store or support team to check the IMEI in its own systems and confirm any restrictions on activation. Tell the representative whether the phone is new, used, financed, refurbished, or imported, because an activation restriction may involve more than a lost-or-stolen report. Obtain the result in writing or retain the support transcript.

CTIA announced a consumer Stolen Phone Checker in 2017 that accepts an IMEI, MEID, or ESN and reports whether a device is listed as lost or stolen. CTIA says a red result means wireless service may be blocked. The announcement and its service description are historical, so confirm that the checker is currently operating, that it covers your carrier, and that its result is current before relying on it.

GSMA and participating operators
GSMA’s Device Registry exchanges blocked IMEIs among participating network operators. The shared list covers devices reported lost, stolen, faulty, or otherwise unsuitable for network service, allowing participating operators to deny service. Participation and data coverage are not universal; a result from one database does not represent every carrier or country.
How to read the result
| Result | What it establishes | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Reported lost or stolen; blocked; or red | The checked service has a record indicating that network service may be denied. | Do not complete the purchase. Ask the seller or carrier to resolve the report, and preserve the listing and payment records. |
| Not found; clear; or green | The checked service did not find a report in its available data at that time. | Continue the authenticity checks and confirm activation with the intended carrier; the result is not a guarantee of future or universal access. |
| No result, error, or unsupported IMEI | The service could not make a determination. | Try the carrier or a country-appropriate official route. Do not treat an error as a clean result. |
| Different answers from different services | The databases may have different coverage, update timing, or participation. | Pause the transaction and ask the intended carrier to explain which result governs activation. |
A negative result is time- and database-specific. It cannot guarantee that the phone will never be reported later, that every operator participates, or that the hardware is authentic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Check every IMEI on a dual-SIM Galaxy
Samsung explains that the number of IMEIs depends on the number of SIM slots. A dual-SIM phone may therefore show IMEI1 and IMEI2 in About phone or after dialing *#06#. Record both numbers and identify which SIM slot each one represents.
Some regional Samsung checking pages specifically request IMEI1 for their own check. That instruction does not mean IMEI2 is irrelevant to network service. Ask the local carrier or blacklist service which identifier it needs for each purpose, and have both checked when the handset can use both slots. Do not assume that clearing one IMEI clears the other.

7. Decide what the combined evidence means
Use the following decision framework after you have the phone’s identifiers, physical observations, and carrier result.
| Authenticity evidence | Blacklist evidence | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Model, software, components, and records agree | Intended carrier confirms the checked IMEI(s) are acceptable | The evidence supports proceeding, subject to normal seller, payment, and return protections. |
| Model and hardware appear genuine | One or more IMEIs are blocked or reported | Do not buy until the carrier and seller resolve the report in a verifiable way. |
| IMEI matches paperwork | Carrier result is clear | Useful corroboration only; continue the physical and software inspection because copied identifiers can pass these checks. |
| IMEI, model, software, or components conflict | Result is clear or unavailable | Stop. A clear or unavailable blacklist result does not cure an authenticity contradiction. |
| Phone appears genuine | Checker cannot determine status | Use the intended carrier’s own verification or an appropriate local service before paying. |
8. What to do when a check fails
The IMEI is blocked
Do not attempt to alter, rewrite, or “clean” the IMEI. Contact the carrier named in the result and the seller, provide the transaction record, and request documentation showing that the report has been removed. Until the intended carrier confirms activation eligibility, treat the handset as unusable for your purpose.
The box and phone do not match
Ask whether the phone was replaced under warranty or refurbished, and require a receipt that identifies the actual handset. If the explanation cannot be independently confirmed, return the device or decline the sale.
The model, software, and hardware conflict
Photograph the About phone page and the conflicting components, then ask a Samsung authorized service center in the relevant market to inspect the handset. Samsung’s regional guidance recommends complete inspection by an authorized center when a self-check leaves doubt.
The seller refuses an inspection
Walk away rather than substituting a promise, a stock photograph, or a partial IMEI. A legitimate seller can arrange a carrier check or accept a return while you verify the device.
The phone is imported
Confirm the model’s compatibility and support arrangements for your country with the intended carrier and Samsung support. Warranty, registration, software menus, and authorized-service coverage are regional; a check performed for one market may not answer whether another market’s carrier will activate the device.
Complete pre-purchase checklist
- Open Settings > About phone and record the exact model number, serial number, and every IMEI.
- Use
*#06#or Samsung Members, when available, to corroborate the on-device IMEI. - Compare the phone’s values with the box, invoice, receipt, carrier record, and seller’s description.
- Inspect the model-specific physical components and test the installed software and essential functions.
- Identify whether the handset is single-SIM or dual-SIM and record the number associated with each slot.
- Ask the intended carrier to check each required IMEI before payment.
- Use a country-appropriate official checker, understanding its date, coverage, and participation limits.
- Save screenshots, support transcripts, receipts, and the seller’s promises.
- Reject or pause the transaction if any identifier, model, software, component, or network result conflicts.
- Escalate a doubtful handset to a Samsung authorized service center rather than relying on one online result.
Why no single online check is enough
Samsung’s own guidance says there is no completely infallible consumer self-check. IMEI databases are designed to identify devices for network-service decisions, not to certify every component in a phone. Packaging and receipts can be mismatched, databases can differ by country and operator, and a genuine IMEI can be copied. The strongest practical assessment combines on-device identifiers, documentary comparison, model and component inspection, and a carrier decision for the exact network you plan to use.
