Identify the ransomware family, obtain a decryptor only from an official source, and follow that tool’s own test procedure before attempting broad recovery. Preserve the encrypted originals and evidence, and treat a successful test as limited evidence—not a promise that every file can be restored. CISA, the FBI, and the NSA strongly discourage paying: payment does not guarantee file recovery.
What verification can—and cannot—tell you
A decryptor works only with the ransomware family and conditions it supports. A tool that is legitimate may still be the wrong tool for your files, and a correct family match does not establish that every file will decrypt successfully. Official manuals describe different test procedures and limitations; there is no universal decryptor test or published success rate that predicts full recovery.
Removing active malware is separate from decrypting files. Containment and removal can help stop further damage, but they do not reverse encryption. If you lack backups, check whether an official free decryptor exists for the identified family.

Contain the incident and preserve evidence
Disconnect affected devices from networks to limit spread. Keep the ransom note, encrypted files, and other relevant evidence. For an organizational incident, involve qualified incident responders and coordinate containment and evidence preservation. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide, revised October 19, 2023, recommends preserving evidence and recovering on clean systems.

Identify the ransomware family
Use clues from the ransom note and encrypted-file samples. The No More Ransom Project’s Crypto Sheriff accepts encrypted files up to 1 MB and ransom-note information to check whether a solution is available. Consider the sensitivity of files and the service’s data-handling implications before uploading anything.
-
Confirm the tool’s source and family match
Start with the No More Ransom decryptor directory or an official vendor or law-enforcement page. Confirm that the tool is intended for the identified family, then read its manual before downloading or running it. Do not trust an executable simply because it is advertised as a decryptor.

Prepare a recoverable copy
Where feasible, create a separate copy or disk image of affected data before using a decryptor. Preserve the original encrypted files. Follow incident-response guidance to ensure the ransomware process and persistence are addressed before recovery attempts. The Solidbit decryptor manual advises making a full-disk backup, stopping the ransomware process, removing persistence, and leaving adequate disk space; it also says decryptor use does not replace forensic investigation.

Use only the documented test procedure
There is no single test method for all decryptors. For example, the Rhysida manual describes a testing mode intended to check whether decryption would work without changing files. The DoNex manual instead describes using a matching original and encrypted sample to recover a key, and recommends an original sample of at least 1 MB. These are tool-specific instructions, not general requirements. Follow the exact manual for your tool; if it provides no test procedure, do not assume one exists.

Check representative recovered files
If a test succeeds, inspect representative recovered files and verify that their contents are usable before broader recovery. A successful test on one file does not guarantee recovery of other files. The Rhysida manual describes machine, file-order, processor, and file-format conditions that can affect decryption; the DoNex manual warns that recovery may be impossible or partial.
-
Consider backups and professional options
Check for clean backups and consult qualified recovery or incident-response professionals when the data or incident warrants it. CISA recommends offline, encrypted backups and testing restoration in a disaster-recovery scenario. The agency also advises consulting federal law enforcement about possible decryptors: researchers may have found flaws in some ransomware variants and released tools.

How to compare possible decryptors or recovery options
If more than one candidate tool or recovery route exists, assess each against the same practical criteria. This is a decision aid, not a formal certification standard.

Does paying guarantee that files will be recovered?
No. CISA, the FBI, and the NSA state that paying the ransom does not guarantee recovery and may encourage further criminal activity. Their joint ransomware advisory says: “Paying the ransom also does not guarantee that a victim’s files will be recovered.” A checked decryptor does not make payment reliable, either; it is a separate recovery option with its own limitations.
