Verify a Pokémon card by matching three things before you pay: the expansion or set identifier, the collector number, and the card’s rarity or printing treatment. Read those marks from the card, confirm the combination in an official expansion checklist or a reputable Pokémon TCG database, then compare the listing’s language, photographs, condition, and promo markers. Artwork or the Pokémon’s name alone is not enough because the same character and illustration style can appear in multiple printings.
What identifies a Pokémon card
TCGplayer’s reference makes the key point plainly: every Pokémon card has a collector card number. That number is useful only when read with the set it belongs to. A card’s practical identity is the combination of its expansion, collector number, and rarity or printing treatment.
- Set or expansion: The set symbol or expansion code identifies the release in which the card was printed.
- Collector number: This is usually printed as
XXX/YYY, such as23/189. The first number identifies the card’s position; the second is the advertised size of the main numbered set. - Rarity or treatment: A symbol, foil treatment, or a promo marker indicates how the card was classified in that release.
- Language and printing markers: These distinguish otherwise similar cards and must match the listing.
Use all of these fields together. A correct Pokémon name with the wrong set symbol or wrong collector number is not the card described by the listing and is a concrete counterfeit warning when the physical card is supposed to belong to that set.

Read the lower edge first
Turn the card over and inspect the lower edge of the front face, where the set symbol or expansion code, collector number, and rarity mark are normally printed. Record the characters exactly, including slashes, letters, and any PROMO text. Tiny marks are easy to misread in a seller photograph, so enlarge the image only to read it; do not assume a blurry symbol.

Separate the card number from other numbers
Pokémon cards can contain numbers in attacks, hit points, dates, or copyright lines. The collector number is the entry that follows the set’s numbering format, commonly number/total. For example, 23/189 means card 23 in a main run advertised as 189 cards. It is not a price, a print quantity, or a rating of the card’s power.
Check whether the card says PROMO
Promo cards may use a star-like rarity mark together with PROMO text. Treat that marker as part of the card’s identity. A regular expansion card with similar artwork is not interchangeable with a promotional printing.
A reliable pre-purchase verification sequence
Follow these steps for every expensive, unfamiliar, or poorly photographed listing. For a low-value card, the same sequence takes only a minute and prevents many identification mistakes.
- Ask for a readable front photograph. The image should show the lower edge clearly enough to read the set symbol or code, collector number, rarity mark, language, and any promo text. If the seller provides only an artwork crop, request a full front image before buying.
- Transcribe the marks. Write down the set identifier, the number in
XXX/YYYformat, the rarity symbol or wording, the language, and any visible foil or promo treatment. Keep uncertain characters marked for rechecking rather than guessing. - Find the set-specific checklist. Search the card name and exact collector number in an official Pokémon expansion checklist or a reputable Pokémon TCG database. Check the set symbol and the number together; a number that exists in one expansion does not validate a different symbol.
- Confirm the rarity legend for that release. Use the legend attached to the exact set. The basic symbols are not a complete explanation for every modern expansion, and a symbol can be used differently when a set introduces additional rarity classes.
- Verify special numbering. If the first number is higher than the printed denominator, look for that exact entry in the set list. It may be a secret rare or another card outside the main numbered run, not a printing error.
- Compare the listing object. Match the verified set, number, language, rarity or foil treatment, promo or printing marker, condition, and seller photographs. Do not rely on the Pokémon’s name or illustration alone.
- Escalate if anything conflicts. Pause the purchase when the physical marks do not match the checklist, the seller refuses clear photographs, or the card shows other counterfeit indicators. Pokémon Support recommends a bright-light check and evaluation by a specialist trading-card shop for a doubtful card.
How to interpret the collector number
| Marking | What it tells you | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
23/189 |
Card 23 in a main set advertised as 189 cards | Locate card 23 in the checklist for the set symbol shown on the card |
| A first number above the denominator | Often a secret rare or another card outside the main numbered run | Confirm the exact number in that expansion’s complete list; do not treat it as an automatic error |
| A number that exists but with a different set symbol | A possible mismatch or counterfeit | Check the symbol and number as one pair, then compare the card image with official references |
| No readable collector number | Insufficient evidence to identify the printing confidently | Request a sharper photograph or inspect the physical card before paying |
The denominator is the advertised size of the main set, not necessarily the total number of cards issued in every rarity category. Secret or other out-of-main-set cards can make the numerator exceed that denominator. The correct question is not “Is the numerator too high?” but “Does this exact number appear in the complete checklist for this expansion?”

Rarity symbols and why the era matters
The basic symbol legend
| Symbol or marker | Basic meaning | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Circle | Common | Use the set’s own legend if the release adds special treatments |
| Diamond | Uncommon | The symbol identifies the standard rarity class, not market value |
| Star | Rare | A star can also appear in special treatments; check the expansion legend |
Star with PROMO |
Promotional printing | Verify the promo entry and source product or event when the listing claims one |
Circle, diamond, and star are the standard common, uncommon, and rare marks described in Pokémon TCG rarity references. They do not by themselves prove authenticity, condition, or price. A counterfeit can copy a familiar symbol, so rarity must be checked with the set and number.
Scarlet & Violet and newer treatments
Scarlet & Violet expansions add labels such as double-rare, ultra-rare, and illustration-rare. These treatments can use additional star patterns, foil styles, or terminology that is not explained by the older three-symbol legend. For a modern card, open the checklist or rarity legend for that specific expansion and match the exact label or treatment shown there.
Do not transfer a rarity interpretation from one era to another. If an older card and a Scarlet & Violet card both show a star-like mark, the mark may not represent the same class. The expansion’s own reference takes precedence over a generic symbol chart.

How to handle secret and out-of-main-set numbering
A card with a numerator higher than the denominator is not automatically fake. In a notation such as 198/189, the card is numbered beyond the advertised 189-card main run. Such numbering can identify a secret rare or another card added outside the main sequence.

- Read the entire number, including both sides of the slash.
- Confirm the set symbol or expansion code.
- Search the complete checklist for that exact entry.
- Check whether the checklist assigns a special rarity or illustration treatment.
- Compare the physical card’s artwork, language, and foil treatment with the reference image.
If the number is absent from the set’s complete list, or if the listed rarity and the physical mark disagree, stop and investigate. Do not “correct” the card by assuming the denominator was printed incorrectly.
Comparing two listings with similar artwork
When two sellers show what appears to be the same Pokémon, compare the fields that define the object being sold. Similar artwork may occur across sets, languages, promos, reprints, and rarity treatments.
| Comparison field | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Set or expansion | Do the symbols or codes match the claimed set? | The same Pokémon can be printed in several expansions |
| Collector number | Does the exact number appear in that set’s checklist? | The number distinguishes cards within an expansion |
| Language | Is the card English, Japanese, or another language, and does the listing say so? | Language is part of the printing identity and affects what the buyer receives |
| Rarity and foil treatment | Does the symbol, label, and surface treatment match the checklist image? | Different treatments can have different scarcity and descriptions |
| Promo or printing marker | Is PROMO present, or is the card tied to a special release? |
A promo is not the same object as a regular expansion card |
| Condition | Do the photos show the actual corners, edges, face, and back? | Condition is separate from identity and must be assessed from the individual card |
| Seller photographs | Are the images of the card being sold rather than a stock image? | Stock artwork can hide a wrong number, language, or counterfeit |
Use the listing description as a claim to test, not as proof. A seller can type the right Pokémon name while uploading a different printing. The marks on the card and the set checklist determine what the card actually is.
Counterfeit checks and safe escalation
Look for data conflicts first
The most useful early warning is a mismatch you can document: a wrong set symbol, a number that does not belong to the set, an impossible rarity treatment, or a promo marker missing from a card advertised as a promo. TCGplayer identifies a wrong set symbol or wrong set number as a counterfeit warning. These conflicts justify stopping the transaction even when the card looks attractive.

Use a bright-light transparency check carefully
Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards can often be identified by examining them under a bright light. Use the check as an escalation step after matching the card’s data, not as a substitute for the checklist. Compare the result with a known genuine card of similar construction if you have one, and avoid bending, tearing, wetting, or otherwise damaging the card.
Compare official product images
Pokémon Support also recommends comparing the card or product with official images. Check the layout, printed text, set mark, number, and rarity treatment. An image comparison is strongest when the reference is for the same expansion and language; a different era or language can have legitimate layout differences.
Ask a specialist trading-card shop
When the card remains doubtful, take it to a specialist trading-card shop for an in-person assessment. This is especially appropriate before buying a high-value card, after receiving a card whose marks conflict with the listing, or when the photographs are too poor to verify. A shop’s evaluation is an additional safeguard, not a replacement for recording the set and number.

A very low price can be a warning sign, particularly when a seller offers supposedly valuable sealed product far below comparable listings. Pokémon Support describes a dramatically underpriced pack as a qualitative warning, but there is no authoritative universal percentage or cutoff that proves a card is counterfeit. Do not use a numerical “suspicious price” rule.

Price also cannot establish rarity. A common card in excellent condition, a rare card with heavy damage, and a promo with limited distribution can have very different prices. Verify the physical identity first; assess value separately using condition, language, demand, and current market information.
A worked verification example
Suppose a listing shows a card marked 23/189 and claims it is a rare card from a particular expansion.
- Zoom in on the lower edge and record the set symbol, the exact
23/189number, the rarity mark, language, and any foil or promo text. - Open the checklist for the claimed expansion and locate card 23, not merely a card with the same Pokémon name.
- Confirm that card 23 is listed with the same artwork, rarity classification, and treatment.
- Compare the seller’s photograph with the checklist image and inspect whether the card really carries the claimed symbol.
- If the listing’s card has a different symbol, a different rarity treatment, or a number that belongs to another expansion, do not buy it until the seller explains the discrepancy and provides verifiable evidence.
If the card instead reads a number higher than 189, search the complete expansion list before rejecting it. The higher numerator may be a valid secret or out-of-main-set entry.

- Identifying by artwork only: Similar illustrations and the same Pokémon name can represent different printings.
- Using a generic rarity chart: Modern expansions add rarity classes, so an older legend may misclassify a current card.
- Assuming a high numerator is an error: Secret and other out-of-main-set cards can be numbered beyond the denominator.
- Ignoring language: A listing may show a different language from the one the buyer expects.
- Trusting a stock image: The pictured artwork may not show the actual card’s number, condition, or authenticity.
- Relying on price alone: There is no universal price threshold that proves a counterfeit.
- Skipping specialist help: A physical inspection is sensible when data conflicts or bright-light and image checks remain inconclusive.
Printable buying checklist
Before completing the purchase, confirm each item:
- The full front photograph is readable.
- The set symbol or expansion code is recorded.
- The collector number is recorded exactly, including the denominator.
- The number appears in the checklist for that same set.
- The rarity symbol or modern rarity label matches the set’s legend.
- Any
PROMOor special-printing marker is present and accurately described. - The language matches the listing and your expectations.
- The condition shown is the condition being sold.
- The seller’s photos depict the actual card.
- No set, number, rarity, or image conflict remains unexplained.
- A specialist shop will evaluate the card if the identity or authenticity is still uncertain.
How to keep the check current
Card layouts and rarity labels can change with new expansions. Recheck modern cards against the current set-specific checklist rather than relying on a chart saved from an older era. When a database and a seller description disagree, use the expansion’s official checklist as the primary reference and treat the discrepancy as a reason to pause.
The most dependable workflow is deliberately simple: read the lower-edge marks, match set and number together, interpret rarity using the correct era’s legend, verify any special numbering, and escalate suspicious cards to bright-light comparison and specialist evaluation. That process identifies the actual printing before money changes hands.
