Verify the seller and the individual listing together. A convincing logo, copied box, marketplace badge, low price, or positive seller rating cannot prove that a particular set is genuine. Check who operates the store, compare the exact set number and contents with official LEGO information, request current photos when necessary, and pay with a method that may provide recourse if the product is fake or never arrives.
What online authenticity checks can—and cannot—prove
Online buying involves two separate questions: whether the website or account is trustworthy, and whether the item offered in a specific listing is genuine. A real-looking store can sell counterfeit goods, while an established marketplace can contain an inaccurate or fraudulent listing. Treat both layers as evidence to evaluate, not as automatic proof.
The LEGO Group says counterfeit webstores may use the LEGO logo, theme logos, genuine product photographs and a design resembling the official shop. Its Fair Play brochure also documents copying of product names, logos, shapes, packaging, instructions and marketing materials. That means an image containing familiar branding is not enough to authenticate the set in the image, much less the item that will be shipped.

There is no universal authenticity code, single seal pattern valid for every production era, or photo-only test that certifies every set. A barcode scan, logo stamp, price, box seal or seller rating can contribute to your assessment, but none is conclusive by itself.

LEGO’s 2018 Fair Play brochure says its trademark is registered in more than 150 countries and describes approximately 3,900 different elements developed for its product programmes. Those figures show the breadth of the company’s intellectual property; they are not counterfeit rates and do not identify a particular set.
1. Vet the webstore or seller before studying the set
Start with the business behind the listing. LEGO’s consumer guidance recommends checking the site’s language, customer-service details, return terms, privacy terms and reviews from multiple sources.
Confirm a real identity and reachable contact details
- Look for a legal or trading name, physical business address, working email address and a support method that is more substantial than a contact form.
- Check that the domain, email address and company name are consistent. An address using a free mailbox, a misspelled domain or a name unrelated to the store deserves extra scrutiny.
- Send a specific pre-sale question. A genuine seller should be able to explain whether the set is sealed, complete, used, or missing parts, and should answer without evasive wording.
- Search the business name, domain and contact details independently. Do not rely on testimonials displayed only on the seller’s own site.
Read language and legal pages for inconsistencies
Incorrect or machine-translated language, mismatched currencies, copied policy text, broken links and references to another company can indicate a hastily assembled store. Read the shipping, returns, privacy and terms pages before paying. Confirm who pays return shipping, the return deadline, the condition required for a return and where a dispute must be filed. A policy that promises a refund but provides no company identity or address is not meaningful protection.

Search for independent reviews on several services and look for a pattern over time. Reviews posted in a short burst, identical wording, complaints about non-delivery, substituted products or ignored refunds, and a complete absence of history are warning signs. A clean review profile is useful context, not proof that the item in your cart is authentic.

Treat an unusually low price as a warning signal
Compare the asking price with several plausible listings for the same set and condition. LEGO states: “When you see very low prices being offered on LEGO products, it may be a fake webstore that uses the tactic to lure you in to either buy fake LEGO sets or simply take your money.” A low price can have legitimate explanations—used condition, missing parts, a damaged box or a clearance sale—but the seller should explain which one applies. A bargain without a credible explanation is a reason to investigate further, not standalone proof of counterfeiting.
2. Match the listing to the exact official set
Do not authenticate from a theme name alone. Ask for the precise set number, then compare the listing with LEGO’s official product information and help resources. LEGO’s buying-parts help index includes guidance for identifying set and piece numbers: LEGO Help Topics: Buying parts.
Verify the set number and name
- Check that the number is a valid LEGO set number and that it corresponds to the stated name, theme and approximate release period.
- Compare the number printed on the box, instruction booklet and listing. A seller who provides only a theme name or stock photograph has not given enough information to assess the specific item.
- Watch for a genuine set number paired with a different model, piece count, minifigure selection or box design. Counterfeit listings can reuse real product identifiers.
Use official product pages, instruction resources or the set-number information in LEGO’s help system as your reference. The comparison can expose an incorrect description, but it is not a definitive authentication procedure: a counterfeiter may copy accurate official data.
Ask for photos of the actual item
Request clear, current photographs rather than relying on catalog images. Ask the seller to include a handwritten note with the current date or your order reference if you need confidence that the photos are theirs. Useful views include:

- the front, back and sides of the box;
- all seals, folds, labels and visible print;
- the instruction booklet cover and relevant identification pages;
- bags, trays, loose elements and minifigures when the set is opened;
- any damage, replacement packaging, missing parts or substituted elements.
Look for contradictions between photographs and the written description. A listing that says “factory sealed” should not show opened bags or resealed tape. A “complete” used set should be supported by an explanation of how completeness was checked, not merely a stock photograph of the finished model.
Compare contents and condition, not just appearance
For a sealed set, ask whether the original box, internal bags and instructions are present and whether the seals are intact. For a used set, ask whether every element and minifigure is included, whether any parts are discolored or damaged, and whether the instructions are original or replacement copies. If the listing is for a box or instructions only, make sure the title and price do not imply that bricks are included.
BrickLink’s item-listing policy distinguishes new and used items and complete, incomplete and sealed conditions. It prohibits counterfeit items and replica boxes, but those rules describe what sellers may list; they do not independently authenticate the particular item you are considering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Recognize copied branding and packaging
The LEGO Group’s Fair Play brochure, dated 1 November 2018, explains that copyists can reproduce trademarks, product presentation and packaging to confuse consumers. The brochure states, “The LEGO logo is the consumers’ guarantee that they have bought a genuine LEGO product.” Read that as the company’s statement about its genuine products, not as proof that a logo visible in a seller’s photograph is genuine. A copied box can display a copied logo.

Use branding as a consistency check
- Check spelling, typography, theme names, warning text, language versions and legal markings against official images for the relevant region and era.
- Look for inconsistent logos across the box, instructions, bags and listing images.
- Be cautious when a seller crops out identification panels, seals or the parts of the box that would reveal an inconsistency.
Do not declare a set fake solely because an older box differs from a current image. Packaging changes by release year and market. Conversely, do not declare it genuine because the box looks professional. The documented ability to copy packaging is exactly why several independent checks are needed.
4. Compare listings using the same evidence
When two or more sellers offer the same set, compare them on evidence quality rather than headline price. This table is a practical framework, not a source-backed scoring system or an authenticity guarantee.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask | What a stronger listing provides |
|---|---|---|
| Seller identity | Who operates the store, and can you reach that party? | Consistent business name, address, email and responsive support. |
| Set identification | Is the exact set number paired with the correct name and theme? | Number shown on the actual box or item, not only in a title. |
| Condition | Is it new, used, sealed, complete or incomplete? | Specific condition description and photos matching it. |
| Contents | Are bricks, minifigures, instructions and original packaging included? | Clear inventory information and disclosure of substitutions or omissions. |
| Price | Is the difference from comparable listings explained? | A credible reason such as used condition or box damage. |
| Returns | Can you return an item that is counterfeit or materially misdescribed? | Readable terms, deadline, process and responsible party. |
| Payment recourse | What can you do if the item is fake or never arrives? | Credit or debit card payment where available, subject to issuer and jurisdiction. |
5. Ask focused questions before ordering
Written answers create a record and reveal whether the seller understands the item. Ask only questions that affect your decision:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- What is the exact set number, and can you photograph it on the actual box or instructions?
- Is the set factory sealed, opened but complete, or incomplete? If opened, how was completeness checked?
- Are all original instructions, minifigures, stickers, boxes and bags included?
- Are any parts replaced, damaged, discolored or from another manufacturer?
- Can you send current photographs of the seals, identification panels and contents?
- What is the return process if the item is counterfeit or does not match the description?
Save the listing, photographs, messages, invoice and payment confirmation. If the seller refuses details needed to evaluate the offer, choose a seller whose identity, terms and item can be assessed. That is a risk-reduction decision, not a guarantee that the alternative seller is genuine.

6. Choose payment with dispute options
LEGO says a credit or debit card will often provide greater protection for fake or nonexistent products. The exact protection, time limit and evidence requirements depend on the card issuer, payment network and your jurisdiction. Before paying, check the issuer’s procedure for a merchandise-not-as-described or non-delivery dispute.
- Pay through the platform’s normal checkout rather than an off-platform transfer requested in messages.
- Keep the transaction currency, seller name and order description visible on the receipt.
- Avoid payment methods that provide no practical dispute route when the seller pressures you to use them.
- Do not assume that card payment guarantees a refund; follow the issuer’s deadlines and documentation rules.
If the set arrives and appears counterfeit, stop modifying or discarding it. Photograph the parcel, shipping label, box, seals, instructions, elements and any defects. Contact the seller through the documented channel, then use the marketplace process or card issuer’s dispute process if the response is inadequate.
7. Understand what marketplace policies mean
A marketplace rule is a standard for sellers, not an inspection certificate for every listing. BrickLink’s Item Listing Policy, last updated 8 February 2023, requires genuine LEGO items and prohibits counterfeit listings and replica boxes. It also sets expectations for describing new, used, complete, incomplete and sealed condition.

Continue to check the item number, photos, condition and seller communication, and use the marketplace’s dispute and reporting channels when necessary.
8. A complete pre-purchase decision process
Use this sequence for a high-value, rare or hard-to-replace set, and shorten it only when the risk and price are low.
- Record the exact offer. Save the URL, seller name, set number, condition, included contents, price, shipping terms and return policy.
- Check the seller. Confirm contact details, coherent language, privacy and returns pages, independent reviews and a history that is not suspiciously new.
- Check the number. Compare the name, theme, box design, instructions and stated contents with official LEGO information.
- Request item-specific evidence. Obtain current photos of the actual box, seals, instructions and contents, especially for expensive or supposedly sealed sets.
- Explain the price. Identify whether condition, missing pieces, box damage or a legitimate sale accounts for a major discount.
- Read the remedy. Know how and where to return the item and what evidence is required for a dispute.
- Choose payment. Use a credit or debit card where available and retain all records.
- Make a stop decision. If the seller will not answer material questions, the listing contradicts itself, or the terms leave no realistic recourse, do not buy that listing.
Warning signs and the appropriate response
| Warning sign | Why it matters | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Price far below comparable offers | LEGO identifies very low prices as a tactic used by fake stores to attract buyers. | Ask for the condition and discount explanation; verify the seller and payment recourse. |
| Only official catalog images | You cannot tell whether the seller possesses the item or whether its condition matches the description. | Request current photographs of the actual item. |
| Copied-looking site with poor language | LEGO specifically flags incorrect language and fake customer-service addresses as warning signs. | Check identity, policies and independent reviews; leave if they do not align. |
| Logo or box used as the sole proof | Trademarks, packaging and instructions can be copied. | Require multiple independent checks. |
| Seller avoids set number or contents questions | The listing cannot be compared with official information or condition standards. | Do not rely on the seller’s claim alone; choose a better-documented offer. |
| Pressure to pay off-platform | You may lose marketplace records and dispute mechanisms. | Use normal checkout or walk away. |
Limits of set-specific and regional checks
The title does not identify a set number, production year or country. Packaging, language panels, seals and availability can therefore differ by market and release period. Do not apply a single visual rule to every LEGO set. If you are evaluating a vintage set, a regional edition or a collectible where the box itself matters, compare against documentation for that exact version and ask the seller to identify the edition.
Official guidance establishes that imitation exists and explains how to inspect a store and listing. It does not publish a universal counterfeit-rate statistic, a guaranteed seller-rating threshold or a procedure that certifies an individual set from photographs alone. Your objective before paying is not mathematical certainty; it is to remove avoidable risk and keep a practical remedy if the listing proves false.
