The reliable way to verify a Ledger device is to set it up yourself in the genuine Ledger Wallet application and complete Ledger’s Genuine Check before creating or funding accounts. Buy from Ledger or an authorized reseller, reject any device that arrives with a PIN or recovery phrase, and never type a Secret Recovery Phrase into a computer, phone, application, or website.

Genuine Check verifies cryptographic attestation from the device’s Secure Element. It is strong evidence that the device contains Ledger-authenticated hardware and software, but it is not a complete inspection of the shipping chain or every possible physical modification.

What to do before trusting a Ledger device

Use this sequence for a new, resale, marketplace, or replacement device:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the actual seller, not merely the product listing.
  2. Inspect the package and the device’s initial state.
  3. Install Ledger Wallet only from Ledger’s official website or an official iOS or Android app store.
  4. Set up the device yourself and run Genuine Check in that application.
  5. Let the device generate a new recovery phrase, then record it offline.
  6. Stop and contact Ledger Support if the package is compromised, the device is preconfigured, or Genuine Check fails.

These checks answer different questions. A seller check reduces purchase risk, a package inspection identifies obvious tampering, Genuine Check tests cryptographic identity, and safe recovery-phrase handling protects the wallet after setup. None of the first three makes it safe to disclose the recovery phrase.

1. Verify where the device came from

Buy through Ledger or an authorized reseller

Ledger recommends purchasing directly from Ledger or from a reseller it identifies as authorized. This gives you a more reliable starting point for returns and support, but the seller’s identity is not proof that the particular unit in your hands is genuine.

Check the actual seller on a marketplace

Marketplace listings can contain several sellers under one product page. On Amazon, inspect the listing’s actual “Sold by” field rather than relying on the product title, photographs, or the marketplace name. Cross-check that seller against Ledger’s official storefront or authorized-reseller information. If the seller cannot be matched, treat the purchase as higher risk and consider returning it instead of attempting setup.

A credible seller profile, a high rating, and professional-looking photographs are risk signals only. They cannot replace the cryptographic check in authentic Ledger Wallet software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Inspect the package and the device’s starting state

Look for opening or alteration

Before connecting the device, examine the box and any packaging for signs that it has been opened, resealed, replaced, or altered. Do not rely on a hologram, seal, weight, branding, or print quality as an authenticity test. Counterfeit packaging can look convincing, and anti-tampering seals can be cloned or removed and replaced without obvious damage.

Reject preconfigured credentials

A legitimate Ledger device should not arrive with a PIN already selected or with a recovery phrase printed, handwritten, emailed, or supplied in the box. Ledger’s buying guidance states: “A legitimate Ledger device never comes with a recovery phrase or PIN code pre-configured. Ever.” The recovery phrase must be generated by the device during your own setup.

Do not try a supplied PIN to see whether it works. Do not keep a supplied phrase “just in case,” import it into another wallet, or use the device with accounts derived from it. Treat preconfigured credentials as a reason to stop and seek a return or Ledger Support.

3. Install the authentic Ledger Wallet application

Use only official distribution channels

Download Ledger Wallet for desktop from Ledger’s official website, or obtain the mobile version from the official iOS or Android app stores. Start from Ledger’s own site or the store’s verified publisher information. Do not install a wallet application supplied through a seller’s link, an unofficial app store, a pop-up, a social-media message, or an unsolicited support conversation.

Why the application source matters

Genuine Check is meaningful only when the checking application itself is authentic. Ledger warns that counterfeit software could falsely report a device as genuine. A convincing box and a “genuine” message in an untrusted application therefore provide no dependable assurance.

Never give a recovery phrase to an application in order to “activate,” “verify,” “synchronize,” or “unlock” a device. The legitimate setup flow does not require the phrase to be typed into your computer or phone.

4. Run Genuine Check during your own setup

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Open the Ledger Wallet application you installed from Ledger’s official website or an official mobile app store.
  2. Connect the Ledger device using the setup flow shown by the application. Follow the on-screen instructions and create the device’s PIN yourself.
  3. Choose the option to initialize or set up a new device when prompted. Do not restore a phrase that someone else supplied.
  4. Allow Ledger Wallet to perform Genuine Check. The check is initiated by the application and requires a response from the connected device.
  5. Wait for the application to report a successful check before using the device’s manager functions or creating accounts.
  6. If the check cannot be completed or reports a failure, disconnect from the process, do not add funds, and contact Ledger Support.

What a successful result means technically

Ledger’s Secure Element contains a device keypair and a Ledger-issued certificate. During Genuine Check, a secure server sends a challenge to the device. The Secure Element signs that challenge, and Ledger verifies the signature and attestation before permitting access to relevant Ledger Wallet manager functions.

A counterfeit device running rogue firmware should not be able to produce the required response without the device key and Ledger-signed certificate. This is why the check is more informative than looking at a logo, a seal, or the device’s weight.

5. Handle the recovery phrase safely

Generate and record it on the device

During setup, the Ledger device generates the Secret Recovery Phrase. Write it down exactly as displayed, in the order shown, and keep the physical record private and protected from loss, theft, fire, and unauthorized photographs.

Never type it into another device

Do not enter the phrase into Ledger Wallet, a browser, a computer, a phone, a cloud note, an email, a support form, or any website. A prompt to enter it for a Genuine Check, a firmware update, a refund, a replacement, or account recovery is a scam indicator. Anyone who obtains the phrase can generally control the assets associated with it; Ledger Support cannot make a phrase safe after it has been exposed.

Do not let a seller or “support agent” perform setup

Set up the device while you control the screen and the physical unit. Do not send the device away for activation, follow a remote operator’s instructions to reveal words, or migrate funds because a letter or message says a replacement is required.

What each verification method can and cannot establish

Check What it helps establish Important limitation
Seller cross-check Whether the purchase came through Ledger or a channel Ledger identifies as authorized Seller identity alone does not prove that the specific device is genuine.
Package and initial-state inspection Whether there are obvious signs of opening, alteration, preconfiguration, or supplied credentials Good-looking packaging cannot establish authenticity; counterfeit packaging can look convincing.
Genuine Check in authentic Ledger Wallet Whether the device’s Secure Element passes Ledger’s cryptographic attestation It does not establish every event in shipping or resale and cannot detect every physical implant.
Recovery-phrase handling Whether setup follows a safe ownership model in which the device creates the secret No legitimate verification process requires the phrase to be entered into a computer, phone, app, or website.

What Genuine Check does not prove

It is not a complete supply-chain history

A successful attestation does not tell you who possessed the device before delivery, whether a package was diverted and resold, or whether every shipping event was legitimate. That is why the seller and package checks still matter even when the application reports success.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It cannot detect every physical modification

Ledger Donjon’s threat-model explanation notes that an unauthorized physical change, such as a spying implant, could remain undetected if the original Secure Element is intact and still answers the cryptographic challenge correctly. Genuine Check is therefore not a universal physical inspection.

It does not make unofficial software safe

An unofficial wallet application can display a false success message. Use the official application source first; then treat its Genuine Check result as evidence about the device’s attestation, not as permission to ignore other warning signs.

Red flags and the correct response

Warning sign What to do
A PIN was supplied or the device is already configured Do not use the supplied PIN or continue setup. Stop and contact Ledger Support or the seller for a return.
A recovery phrase was supplied, printed, or requested Do not enter it, photograph it, or use accounts derived from it. A phrase should be generated on the device during your setup.
The package appears opened, resealed, or altered Do not fund or initialize the device. Document the condition and contact Ledger Support and the seller.
Genuine Check fails or cannot complete Stop interacting with the device, do not move assets to it, and contact Ledger Support.
An unsolicited replacement arrives Do not plug it in or migrate funds based on a letter, email, text, or support message. Verify any replacement through Ledger’s official support channel.
An application asks for the phrase to verify ownership Close the application or page. Never disclose the phrase; use only the official setup flow.

What to do when Genuine Check fails

Do not “test” the wallet with funds

A failed check is not a minor warning to ignore. Do not create accounts, receive a small amount “as a test,” or transfer an existing wallet to the device. Assets sent to accounts controlled by an untrusted device or exposed phrase may not be recoverable.

Confirm that you used the correct application

If the result is unexpected, first establish whether Ledger Wallet came from Ledger’s official website or an official mobile store. Do not replace it with an application offered by a message, seller, or pop-up. If the official application still cannot complete the check, stop and contact Ledger Support with the purchase and package details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve evidence without exposing secrets

Keep the receipt, seller name, order record, photographs of damaged packaging, and the exact error message. Do not photograph or transmit the recovery phrase, PIN, or device screen showing secret words. Support should never need the phrase.

Special cases

Marketplace purchases

For a marketplace purchase, record the actual “Sold by” seller before opening the package and compare it with Ledger’s authorized-reseller information. A product page that appears official can still be fulfilled by a different seller. If the seller cannot be verified or the package shows tampering, returning it is safer than relying on appearance.

Second-hand devices

A used device has an additional ownership-history problem. The previous owner may have handled it, reset it, or supplied instructions that are not trustworthy. Do not use a previous owner’s PIN or phrase. Initialize the device yourself, generate a new phrase, and complete Genuine Check in official Ledger Wallet. If it arrives preconfigured or fails the check, do not use it.

Replacement devices

An unexpected replacement device can be part of a recovery-phrase scam. Do not follow instructions in an unsolicited letter or message, connect the replacement, or migrate funds until you have independently contacted Ledger through its official support route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

Use this checklist immediately before funding a device:

  • The actual seller is Ledger or a seller listed as authorized.
  • The box and device show no unexplained opening or alteration.
  • No PIN or recovery phrase was supplied or preconfigured.
  • Ledger Wallet came from Ledger’s official website or an official iOS or Android app store.
  • You selected and entered the PIN yourself.
  • The device generated a new recovery phrase during setup.
  • Genuine Check completed successfully in the authentic application.
  • The recovery phrase exists only in your private offline record.

If any item is false, pause before adding money. The safest next action is to resolve the specific warning with Ledger Support or return the device rather than trying to work around it.

Why these precautions matter

Ledger’s buyer guidance describes a May 2021 unsolicited-device incident in which the reported loss was approximately $78,000. That is a reported individual incident, not a prevalence estimate or a prediction of typical losses. It illustrates the consequence of treating an unsolicited device or recovery-phrase request as legitimate.

The central security boundary is ownership of the recovery phrase. Genuine Check helps establish that the hardware can prove a Ledger-issued identity, while your setup process ensures that the secret controlling the resulting accounts was created under your control. Both parts are necessary; neither is a substitute for the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

To answer “How do I know if my Ledger is genuine?”, verify the seller, reject preconfigured credentials, install Ledger Wallet from an official channel, and complete Genuine Check before using the device. A successful result is cryptographic evidence from the Secure Element, not a guarantee about every physical or supply-chain event. Never enter the recovery phrase anywhere, and stop immediately if the package is compromised or the check fails.
