To verify a large Bitcoin payment, get its full transaction ID (txid), look it up in a Bitcoin block explorer, and compare the transaction’s status, inputs, outputs, and fee details with the payment information from the sender. A block explorer can show whether the transaction is pending or included in a block; it cannot prove who owns an address or guarantee that a pending payment will confirm.
What you need before checking
- The full txid: Ask the sender for it or copy it from the transaction in their wallet history. Make sure it has not been shortened or clipped.
- The payment details: Have the expected amount and any other information the sender provided so you can compare them with the on-chain transaction.
A txid is the lookup key for a Bitcoin transaction. If you do not have it, ask the sender for the transaction details rather than trying to identify a payment from an address alone. Blockstream’s transaction lookup guide explains how to find a transaction by its ID.
How to check the transaction
- Open a Bitcoin block explorer. Blockstream Explorer is one option. Use an explorer that supports Bitcoin mainnet, and consider whether you are comfortable submitting the txid to a third-party website.
- Search the full txid. Paste the complete ID into the explorer’s search field. A matching result should open a page showing public on-chain transaction details. If there is no result, check for copying errors and ask the sender to confirm the txid and network. A missing result by itself does not establish why the transaction is absent.
- Match the transaction to the payment. Compare the displayed inputs and outputs with the payment details you received. A transaction may have multiple inputs and outputs. Some output may be change returned to the sender, so an output is not necessarily a separate payment to another recipient.
- Read the status. A transaction shown as unconfirmed or in the mempool is still pending. When miners include it in a block, it receives its first confirmation; each subsequent block adds another confirmation. The count describes confirmation depth, not an absolute guarantee of irreversibility.
- Check the fee if it is pending. The total fee and fee rate can help explain why a transaction may be waiting. A lower fee relative to current network demand can mean a longer wait, but an explorer cannot promise when a miner will include it.
How to interpret a large payment’s details
Inputs and outputs show flow, not identity
Inputs identify the transaction outputs being spent, and outputs show where the transaction sends bitcoin. Use those details to check whether the transaction appears consistent with what the sender reported. Public transaction data does not, on its own, identify the real-world people or organizations behind addresses, or prove that a recipient controls an address.

Confirmations indicate inclusion and depth
The first confirmation means the transaction has been included in a block. More confirmations indicate that additional blocks have been added after it. There is no universal confirmation count that guarantees settlement for every high-value payment: a service may set its own policy, and the explorer’s count is not a promise that a transaction is absolutely irreversible.

Fee data can explain a wait, not predict an exact time
For a pending transaction, fee rate and current demand provide context for its potential inclusion priority. Network conditions change, and miners choose which transactions to include. Neither an explorer nor its fee display can guarantee a confirmation time. For background on transaction fees and Bitcoin’s operation, see Blockstream’s explanation of how Bitcoin works.
What to do if the transaction is still pending
- Contact the sender first. The sender can check the wallet’s transaction status and available options. An explorer displays public status; it cannot speed up confirmation.
- Ask whether the wallet supports Replace-by-Fee (RBF). If it does, the sender may be able to create a replacement transaction with a higher fee. Whether this is available depends on the transaction and the sender’s wallet.
Do not treat a pending explorer listing as proof that the payment is complete. The confirmation process depends on miners including the transaction in a block. Blockstream’s description of its explorer explains that the service displays transaction data but cannot accelerate confirmation.

When to use another explorer or your own node
A second explorer can offer another view of public transaction data. The available documentation describes these functional options but does not establish a measured privacy or reliability ranking among explorers. A self-operated Bitcoin node is a more technical alternative. Bitcoin Core’s REST interface documentation notes that transaction lookup can depend on the transaction being in the mempool; looking up confirmed transactions may require enabling a transaction index. The Esplora API documentation describes the data its explorer interface can return.
