Do not treat a Hugging Face download or a green scan badge as a safety certificate. Before loading a model, verify who owns the repository, inspect its files and loading code, check the Hub’s malware and pickle-scan state, choose safetensors weights when possible, and run any test at the exact commit you reviewed. If the repository requires custom code, understand what trust_remote_code=True enables before granting it.
These checks reduce avoidable risk, but none proves that a model, its dependencies, or its behavior is harmless. A signature helps establish origin, a scan can reveal known indicators, and safetensors removes one class of deserialization risk; you still have to decide what code to execute and what access to give it.
The verification sequence
Use this order before you run a model repository:
- Identify the exact owner, repository name, and revision you intend to use.
- Read the model card, commit history, configuration, dependencies, and all executable files.
- Determine whether standard library code can load the model or whether custom repository code is required.
- Check the Hub’s malware-scan and pickle-import indicators, including whether a result is still pending.
- Prefer
.safetensorsweights over pickle-based files when the model supports them. - Pin the reviewed commit when loading custom code.
- Test in an environment with minimal credentials, files, and network access.
Stop rather than “trying it anyway” when the owner, files, requested permissions, or loading instructions do not match what you expected.

Check the full owner and repository name
Start with the complete Hub path, including the namespace before the slash. Similar names, mirrors, and forked projects can look interchangeable while being maintained by different people. Confirm that the owner is the organization or individual you intended to use, and record the repository URL and the revision you plan to inspect.

Read the model card for a coherent account of the model’s purpose, training or conversion history, required files, supported libraries, and loading method. A sparse or contradictory description is a reason to investigate further, not proof of maliciousness. Look for a maintainer history that makes sense for the project and for commits that explain what changed.
Interpret signatures correctly
Where the Hub shows a signed commit, check whether the signer is the person or organization you expected. Hugging Face describes signatures as evidence of origin: they can help you establish who published a commit, but they do not establish that every file is safe. A correctly signed repository can still contain vulnerable, unwanted, or malicious code, so provenance is one check in the sequence rather than the final verdict.
Prefer an identified commit to a moving branch
A branch such as main can point to different code after you finish your review. If custom code is involved, record the commit hash that you inspected and use that revision when loading. Pinning makes the code version reproducible and prevents a later repository update from silently changing what your process executes; it does not certify the pinned code.
2. Inspect the repository before loading anything
Viewing a file in the Hub is different from importing it. Perform a static review first, before installing dependencies or executing a loader.
Read the model card and configuration files
Compare the documented loading procedure with the files actually present. Inspect configuration files for unexpected architecture names, custom classes, external endpoints, or settings that do not fit the model’s stated purpose. Note every file the instructions say to download and every package the instructions say to install.
Review Python and other executable files
Open the repository’s Python modules, scripts, notebooks, and build or install files. Pay particular attention to code that runs at import time, invokes subprocesses, writes outside the model directory, reads environment variables, contacts a network address, or changes permissions. Also inspect shell scripts, native binaries, archive files, and unfamiliar extensions instead of assuming that only .py files matter.
Audit dependency instructions
Dependency declarations expand the code you are trusting. Check package names, version constraints, extra indexes, installation commands, and any instruction to run a script fetched from elsewhere. A model can be benign while a dependency or installation step introduces a separate risk. If you cannot explain why a requested dependency is needed, do not install it in your normal development environment.

Look for a normal-library loading path
Some repositories use model architectures already implemented by the Transformers or another standard library. Others include their own configuration and model classes. Establish which case applies before you run the example command: a repository that needs no custom code usually presents a smaller execution surface than one that asks the loader to import repository-provided classes.
3. Decide what trust_remote_code=True means
In Transformers, trust_remote_code=True permits custom model code from the repository to be imported during loading. It is not a harmless compatibility switch and it is not a safety approval from the Hub. Treat the repository’s custom Python as code you are choosing to execute.
Review first, then enable only when necessary
Use the default library implementation when it supports the model. If the model cannot load without custom code, read the relevant modules and their dependencies before enabling the option. Identify import-time behavior, file and network access, subprocess calls, credential use, and any code paths activated by the model’s configuration.
Load the exact revision you inspected
A representative Transformers call has the following shape:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →from transformers import AutoModel, AutoTokenizer
revision = "REVIEWED_COMMIT_HASH"
tokenizer = AutoTokenizer.from_pretrained(
"OWNER/REPOSITORY",
revision=revision,
trust_remote_code=True,
)
model = AutoModel.from_pretrained(
"OWNER/REPOSITORY",
revision=revision,
trust_remote_code=True,
)
Replace the repository and revision with the values you independently verified. The important controls are the explicit revision and the deliberate decision to enable remote code, not the example names. If the model works without the option, omit it.
Re-review when the repository changes
Pinning protects the run you have approved. It does not make future commits safe automatically. If you move to a newer revision, repeat the provenance, code, scan, and weight-format checks before loading it.
4. Read the Hub’s malware and pickle-scan indicators
Understand what the malware scan covers
Hugging Face says malware scanning is triggered for each repository commit. Use the repository’s displayed status as an additional signal about the files in that revision. A completed clean result is useful evidence, but it is not a guarantee that the repository is safe to execute.

An absent badge is not a clean result
If an “OK” or infected indicator is missing, do not interpret the blank state as approval. The scan may be queued, still running, or have encountered an error; the documentation notes that processing can take a few minutes. Wait for a result or investigate the status before deciding that the repository passed.

Use pickle-import information as a clue
The Hub can display imports identified inside pickled files. This may expose a suspicious module or help you understand what deserialization could invoke. Hugging Face describes the importer lists and scanner as best-effort rather than foolproof, so an empty or familiar-looking list does not prove that a file is harmless. Treat unusual imports as a reason to stop and inspect the file and its source, not as a complete diagnosis.
5. Choose a safer weight format
Why pickle weights deserve extra caution
Pickle-based model weights are serialized Python objects. Python can execute behavior while deserializing such objects, which means loading a weight file can have effects beyond reading numerical tensors. Do not load a pickle file from an untrusted source merely because it is hosted on the Hub or carries a scan indicator.
What safetensors changes
When a compatible file is available, prefer the .safetensors version. The format is designed for tensor data and avoids the particular code-execution behavior associated with unpickling model objects. This is a meaningful reduction in weight-file risk.
What safetensors does not change
Safetensors does not audit Python modules, installation scripts, dependencies, notebooks, native binaries, or the model’s behavior after loading. A repository can contain safe-looking weights alongside code you do not want to run. Evaluate the weight format and the rest of the repository separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConverting an existing file
Hugging Face’s safetensors documentation describes conversion from pickle-based PyTorch files. Conversion can produce a safer artifact for later use, but it does not retroactively prove that the original file or the conversion environment was trustworthy. Review the source and perform the conversion in an isolated environment rather than loading an unknown pickle in a sensitive one.
6. Compare two repositories or loading paths
When two candidate repositories provide the same model or when you are comparing standard loading with custom loading, score the concrete differences below. “Unknown” should remain unknown; do not turn missing evidence into a favorable assumption.

| Decision axis | Lower-risk evidence | Higher-risk or unresolved condition |
|---|---|---|
| Provenance | Expected owner, understandable maintainer history, and a signer you recognize where signatures are available. | Unfamiliar owner, unexplained fork, inconsistent history, or a signer you cannot associate with the project. |
| Weights | Supported .safetensors files with a clear loading path. |
Only pickle-based weights, unexplained archives, or a file whose origin you cannot establish. |
| Code execution | Standard library classes load the model without repository code. | trust_remote_code=True is required, or scripts and dependencies are not understandable. |
| Revision | The reviewed commit hash is recorded and passed as revision. |
Loading follows a moving branch or tag after the review. |
| Scan state | Completed indicators that you have interpreted alongside other evidence. | Missing, pending, or errored status treated as if it were a clean result. |
| Execution impact | Disposable environment with minimal credentials, files, and network access. | Running as a privileged user on a machine containing production secrets or personal data. |
No single row determines the answer. A repository with strong provenance can still require risky custom code; a repository with safetensors can still include an unsafe installer.
7. Test with limited impact
The documented risk of custom loading is arbitrary code execution. If uncertainty remains after review and you still need to evaluate the model, reduce what an unexpected process could reach.
Use a separate environment
- Create a disposable virtual environment, container, or isolated machine dedicated to the test.
- Do not place cloud credentials, SSH keys, API tokens, personal documents, or production configuration in that environment.
- Use a non-privileged account and avoid mounting broad host directories.
- Restrict network access to what the test genuinely needs; do not assume that an outbound connection is harmless.
- Keep the reviewed repository revision and downloaded files identifiable so you can reproduce or delete the test.
This is risk reduction, not a universal sandbox guarantee. Isolation controls depend on how the environment is configured and on what permissions remain available to the process.
Watch the first run
Observe file creation, network connections, subprocesses, and unexpected permission requests during the initial load. Stop if behavior differs from the model card or loading instructions. Do not grant additional access simply to make an unexplained error disappear.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. A practical pre-run checklist
Use this checklist for each new repository or revision:
- Identity: Have you recorded the exact owner, repository, and commit hash?
- Purpose: Does the model card explain what the model is and how it was produced?
- History: Do the commits and maintainers form a credible, understandable history?
- Files: Have you inspected configuration, Python, shell, notebook, archive, and binary files?
- Dependencies: Can you explain every requested package, extra index, and install command?
- Loader: Does standard library code work, or is custom code required?
- Remote code: If required, have you reviewed the modules and deliberately enabled
trust_remote_code=True? - Scanning: Is the malware status complete, and have you checked the pickle-import information?
- Weights: Is a supported safetensors file available, and have you avoided unnecessary pickle loading?
- Pinning: Does your loader specify the reviewed revision rather than a moving branch?
- Impact: Is the test environment free of sensitive credentials and unnecessary access?
If any answer is “no” or “unknown,” classify the repository as unresolved and either investigate the missing evidence or choose a different source.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The Hub hosts it, so it must be safe.”
Hosting and scanning provide useful signals, not a guarantee. Correct the assumption by reviewing ownership, code, dependencies, and weight format before loading.

“The badge is absent, so the scan passed.”
An absent indicator can mean pending work or an error. Wait for a result or determine the status; do not convert silence into approval.
“The model card says to use remote code, so I should enable it immediately.”
The instruction tells you how the model expects to load, not whether the code deserves trust. Read the custom modules, pin the reviewed commit, and isolate the test.
“Safetensors makes the entire repository safe.”
Safetensors addresses a serialization risk in the weight file. It does not evaluate repository code, dependencies, or runtime behavior. Continue the rest of the review.
“A valid signature proves the files are harmless.”
A signature supports an origin claim. It does not certify the signer’s code or rule out a compromised or unwanted release. Use it with the other checks.
“I can review one commit and then keep using the branch.”
A branch can change after your review. Pass the reviewed commit as revision and repeat the review for any update.
What a responsible decision looks like
Proceed when you can identify the publisher, explain the repository’s files and dependencies, understand whether custom code runs, interpret the scan state, select an appropriate weight format, and reproduce the test at a pinned revision in a limited environment. Defer or reject the run when those questions remain unanswered or when the requested access is broader than the model’s purpose requires.
Hugging Face’s own security guidance emphasizes continued caution despite Hub scanning. The practical conclusion is not that every model is unsafe; it is that repository verification is an active engineering decision. Use scan results, signatures, safetensors, code review, revision pinning, and isolation together, and keep their limits visible when you document or approve a model.
