A matching checksum tells you that a downloaded file has the same bytes as the file represented by the checksum you compared it with. It does not, by itself, prove who supplied either one. To check a package’s integrity and authenticity, get the expected checksum or signature through the publisher’s official instructions, compare the full digest, and verify any available signature or build provenance.

What does a matching checksum establish?

A checksum is a digest calculated from data. When you calculate a digest for a downloaded file and compare it with an expected value, a match supports the conclusion that the file’s bytes match the reference represented by that value. A mismatch means they do not match; do not run the file while the discrepancy is unresolved.

The comparison says nothing on its own about where the expected value came from. If someone can replace both the download and a checksum published alongside it, the substituted file can match the substituted checksum. The important question is whether you obtained the reference through a source or mechanism you trust.

Checksum, signature, and provenance: what each check adds

Check What it can establish What still needs to be trusted or checked
Checksum comparison Whether the file’s bytes match the reference digest you used. The source of the reference digest. A matching value does not identify the publisher.
Digital signature verification Whether the signature corresponds to the signed data and signing key. NIST describes code signing as providing data integrity and source authentication. Whether the key or certificate actually belongs to the publisher you expect, and whether the release context is trustworthy. A mathematically valid signature alone does not identify a person or organization to you.
Build provenance verification Evidence about the builder that produced an artifact and the build details recorded for it. Whether the builder identity is trusted, the provenance signature verifies, and fields such as build type and external parameters meet expectations.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology states in FIPS 205, published August 13, 2024, that “Digital signatures are used to detect unauthorized modifications to data and to authenticate the identity of the signatory.” That identity is useful only when you can associate the signing key with the publisher you intend to trust. NIST’s code-signing guidance discusses both integrity and source authentication.

How to manually verify a downloaded package

  1. Start with the publisher’s official release page. Follow its verification instructions. Do not rely on a checksum copied from an unrelated mirror or received through the same untrusted channel as the file.
  2. Calculate the digest using the specified algorithm. Use the command or utility named by the publisher. For example, Apache’s release-verification guide documents SHA-256 checks with sha256sum, shasum -a 256, and Windows certUtil: Verifying Apache Software Foundation Releases.
  3. Compare the complete output. Check the entire calculated digest against the official expected value, not just its first or last characters. If they differ, stop and consult the publisher’s official instructions rather than running the package.
  4. Verify a signature if one is provided. Follow the publisher’s procedure, then check that the signing key or certificate identity is the one the publisher says to expect. A successful signature check without a trusted identity association does not tell you who signed the file.
  5. Verify provenance when it is available. Check the provenance signature, confirm the builder identity is trusted, and compare relevant fields—including build type and external parameters—with the expected values. SLSA’s artifact-verification guidance describes these checks.

What a successful verification does not mean

Even a checksum match, trusted signature, and verified provenance do not prove that software is benign, free of vulnerabilities, or appropriate for your system. They provide evidence about file integrity, source, and—in the case of provenance—build context. Those are distinct questions from whether the software’s behavior is safe.

NIST’s supply-chain guidance recommends automatically verifying hashes or signatures for vendor-provided software installations and updates where feasible. Its software supply-chain risk guidance frames verification as one part of managing risk, not a guarantee that a product is harmless.

What to do if verification fails

  • Checksum mismatch: Do not install or run the file. Recheck that you used the right file, algorithm, and complete expected digest, then consult the publisher’s official release page for instructions.
  • Signature failure or unexpected signer: Treat the file as unverified. Check the publisher’s key or certificate guidance through an official channel; do not bypass the verification warning.
  • Provenance is missing or does not meet expectations: The build context has not been established by that check. Do not treat the artifact as verified on provenance grounds; consult the publisher’s release guidance about what evidence should be available.

For broader supply-chain context, NIST NCCoE’s computing-device integrity guide describes validating artifact source and authenticity and comparing recorded attributes with the actual device. The same distinction matters for software packages: knowing that bytes match a reference is not the same as knowing who produced them.
