Do not trust an unexpected delivery text or email until you verify it outside the message. Do not tap its link, scan its QR code, reply, open an attachment, install an app, or enter payment, password, or personal information. Instead, check the order in the retailer account where you bought it, or independently open the carrier’s official website and enter a tracking number you already have from a legitimate order record.
A real carrier name, polished design, or convincing tracking page does not prove authenticity. Criminals impersonate postal and delivery companies with messages about failed delivery, an incomplete address, a waiting parcel, or a small fee. The same message can lead to a look-alike site that collects card details and passwords or may attempt to install malware.
How do I know if a delivery text is real?
Start with the assumption that an unexpected delivery message is unverified. Verify the shipment through a route you choose yourself, not through a link, phone number, QR code, or contact detail supplied in the message.
Use the order record first
If you are expecting a parcel, open the retailer’s website or app by typing its address, using a bookmark you already trust, or opening the app from your device. Sign in normally and inspect the order, delivery status, and tracking number. A genuine order record should be your reference point; it should not depend on the suspicious message.

Check the carrier independently
If the retailer provides a tracking number, type the carrier’s known official web address yourself or use a telephone number from a statement, contract, or other trusted source. Enter the tracking number there. Do not copy a tracking link from the suspicious message, even if the destination appears to use the carrier’s name.
Why a familiar carrier name proves nothing
Scammers routinely impersonate USPS, FedEx, DHL, and other delivery brands. They can copy logos, colors, wording, and page layouts, then send you to a look-alike site. A message can therefore be fraudulent even when the carrier named in it is genuine.
Warning signs to weigh together

These are warning signs, not a checklist that scammers must follow. Official guidance notes that designs and wording change, and some fraudulent messages look polished. Spelling mistakes can support suspicion, but their absence does not establish that a message is genuine.

It may be. The link itself is not a safe way to determine authenticity because the destination can imitate a carrier or retailer. Treat the link as untrusted when the message was unexpected, asks you to act quickly, requests a fee, or asks for personal or financial information.
What the typical scam page does
The message claims that delivery failed, an address is incomplete, a parcel is waiting, or a small payment is needed to release or reschedule delivery. The link opens a page that resembles a carrier or retailer. It may ask for your card number, bank information, password, address, date of birth, or other identifying details. A link may also lead to malware; that is a possible outcome, not something that happens every time a link is opened.

How to inspect without opening
- Do not tap the URL to “see where it goes.”
- Do not scan a QR code shown in the message.
- Do not copy the link into another browser or URL-checking service as your first verification step.
- Do not reply to ask whether the message is genuine; a reply confirms that your number or address is active.
- Use the retailer’s order page or manually entered carrier address instead.
A decision rule for payment requests
Any request for money deserves independent confirmation. Some shipments can involve legitimate customs charges, but carrier policies and notification methods differ by country and service. Confirm the fee through an account or website you opened independently. Never use the payment page supplied by the unexpected message.
Safe verification workflow
Follow these steps in order. They are designed to keep the suspicious message from becoming your source of truth.

- Stop interacting with the message. Do not tap its link, scan its QR code, reply, open an attachment, or install an app it recommends.
- Identify the possible order. Open the retailer’s website or app through your usual route. Review current and recent orders, delivery addresses, and tracking numbers.
- Compare the details. Check whether the retailer shows the same carrier, tracking number, destination, and delivery status. A mismatch is a reason to treat the message as fraudulent.
- Open the carrier’s official channel yourself. Type the known address or use a telephone number obtained from a trusted source. Do not use contact information in the suspicious message.
- Enter only a tracking number you already possess. Use the number from your retailer account, order confirmation, or other trusted record. Do not rely on a number newly supplied by the text or email.
- Evaluate every fee or data request. If the independently opened carrier page does not show the problem, stop. If it does show a charge, follow that carrier’s published process and confirm the geography-specific rules.
- Report and block the message. Use the carrier’s reporting route, your phone or messaging app’s spam controls, your mobile provider where available, and the appropriate consumer-protection authority.
Does USPS send tracking links by text?
For the United States, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service says USPS will not send tracking texts or emails unless the customer first requested tracking for a specific package. It also says those messages will not contain a link. USPS tracking tools are free. An unsolicited text that appears to be USPS and includes a link should therefore be treated as a smishing attempt, not as a normal USPS tracking notification.
What to do with a suspected USPS message
- Do not click the link or submit information.
- If you are expecting a parcel, open USPS.com directly and use the tracking tools there.
- If you interacted with the URL, notify your financial institution, even if you did not complete a form.
- Use USPS and Postal Inspection Service reporting resources reached independently, rather than links in the message.
USPS also says it does not charge a fee for redelivery. That is a USPS-specific rule; it should not be generalized to every carrier or to every customs situation.
What are Royal Mail’s rules in the UK?
Royal Mail says it contacts customers by text or email about tracking only when the sender requested tracking updates at posting. It says it will not ask for bank details, passwords, or personal data, and does not request payment for an underpaid item by email or text; for an underpaid item, it says it leaves a grey “Fee to Pay” card.

The customs-fee qualification
Royal Mail separately notes that it may send an SMS or email about customs fee charges when the sender provided the recipient’s contact details, as well as leaving a card. Therefore, “Royal Mail would never send any fee message” is too broad. A customs notification still needs to be confirmed through Royal Mail’s independently accessed official channel before you pay or disclose data.

Royal Mail flags shortened or unfamiliar links, unexpected payment requests, requests to reschedule through a link, and pressure to act quickly. For a suspicious email, do not click links or attachments; forward it to reportascam@royalmail.com. For a suspicious text, take a screenshot and send it to that address. The message may also be forwarded to 7726.
What should I do if I clicked a delivery text?
Clicking does not automatically mean your device is infected or your identity is stolen, but it changes the response: stop using the page and assess what, if anything, you entered or downloaded.
If you only opened the page
- Close the browser tab without entering information.
- Do not download an app, profile, file, or browser extension suggested by the page.
- Return to the retailer or carrier by an independently chosen route and check the real order status.
- If the message impersonated USPS, notify your financial institution as advised by the Postal Inspection Service, even if you did not submit a form.
- Report and block the message.
Sources describe malware as a possible consequence of a delivery link, not an inevitable one. Avoid claiming that every click installs malware.
If you entered card or bank information
- Contact the bank, card issuer, or other financial institution promptly using the number on your card or a statement, not the message.
- Explain that the information was entered on a suspected parcel-tracking scam page.
- Follow the institution’s instructions for monitoring, freezing, replacing, or disputing the affected account or card.
- Watch for later unauthorized transactions and related contact attempts.
If you entered a password
- Open the genuine service through its normal website or app, not through the message.
- Change the exposed password immediately.
- If you reused that password elsewhere, change those accounts too, beginning with email and financial services.
- Review account activity and security settings for changes you did not make.
- Contact the affected account provider if you cannot sign in or notice suspicious activity.
If you supplied personal information or installed software
Contact the organization affected by the information, such as your bank, carrier, or account provider, through a trusted channel. If software was installed, stop using the device for sensitive logins until you have followed your device maker’s or security provider’s recovery guidance. The appropriate response depends on what was installed and what information was exposed.

How to report and block parcel scams
United States
- Forward a suspicious text to
7726where available; the FTC recommends this route for unwanted texts. - Report fraud to the FTC at
ReportFraud.ftc.gov. - For USPS impersonation, use USPS.com and Postal Inspection Service resources reached by typing the address yourself.
- Use your phone’s or messaging app’s spam-reporting and blocking options when available.
United Kingdom
- For a suspicious Royal Mail email, forward it to
reportascam@royalmail.com. - For a suspicious Royal Mail text, take a screenshot and send it to that address; you may also forward the message to
7726. - Use your phone or messaging app’s spam and block controls.
Other countries and carriers
Use the carrier’s own reporting page or customer-service number found independently, then use your country’s consumer-protection or fraud-reporting authority. Do not assume that USPS or Royal Mail notification rules apply to FedEx, UPS, DHL, or every postal service. The verification principle is consistent: confirm through the retailer account or a carrier channel you opened yourself.
Common mistakes that make these scams worse
“The logo and sender name look right”
Sender names, logos, and page layouts are easy to copy. They are context clues, not authentication.
“The URL contains the carrier’s name”
A domain can include a brand word while being controlled by someone else, or a shortened URL can hide the destination. Avoid the message link entirely.
“It asks for only a small amount”
A small fee is often the hook for collecting a card number, billing address, or other data. Verify the charge outside the message.
“I will reply to confirm”
Replying can confirm that your number or address is active and does not authenticate the sender. Use a trusted channel instead.

“There are no spelling errors, so it must be real”
Scammers change wording and design, and some messages are professionally produced. The absence of obvious errors is not proof.
“All carriers follow the same notification policy”
They do not. USPS has a specific customer-request and no-link rule; Royal Mail describes sender-requested updates and a qualified customs-fee exception. Check the policy for the carrier and country involved.
A quick checklist before you act
- Was the message expected and connected to an order you can see?
- Did you reach the retailer account without using the message?
- Did you open the carrier’s site or phone channel independently?
- Did you use a tracking number from a trusted order record?
- Does the carrier independently show the same delivery issue?
- Is there a payment, password, bank, or personal-data request?
- Are you being rushed, redirected, or asked to install something?
- Have you reported and blocked the message after preserving useful evidence?
If any answer depends on the suspicious message itself, stop and restart the verification from a trusted route.

Stop, independently check, then report. An unexpected parcel message is not evidence that a delivery problem exists. The retailer order page, a carrier site you opened yourself, and a tracking number you already possess are the reliable starting points. Keep payment details, passwords, and personal information out of the message’s workflow, and treat carrier-specific exceptions—especially customs notifications—as claims to verify, not reasons to trust a link.
