To answer “How do I verify a crypto wallet migration before moving my funds?”, verify the destination in layers: create or restore it through the genuine wallet software, generate the receiving address for the exact asset and network, compare the complete address (including any hardware-device display), send a small test transaction, wait for on-chain confirmation, and only then move the balance. Keep the old wallet and its backup available until the test and the final receipt are confirmed.

A wallet migration can mean two different things. Restoring a recovery phrase recreates access to the same accounts; it does not move coins. Moving funds is a blockchain transaction to a new address, and an incorrectly addressed transaction may not be reversible. The procedure below treats those operations separately so you can check what has actually changed.

The verification sequence at a glance

Use this order for a normal, non-emergency migration. Each step checks a different failure point; skipping one can leave you testing the wrong wallet, the wrong chain, or an address you did not intend to use.

  1. Set up the destination through its official app or device. If you are moving from an internet-connected wallet to hardware, generate a new recovery phrase on the hardware wallet rather than importing the old online phrase.
  2. Choose the exact asset and network in the destination wallet, then generate its receiving address.
  3. Inspect the entire address. For hardware wallets, compare the address in the wallet software with the address shown on the device itself before approving it.
  4. Check compatibility. An address format by itself does not prove that the selected asset and blockchain network are correct.
  5. Send a small test transaction when the amount is substantial and the old wallet is not in an active attack.
  6. Wait for confirmation on the blockchain and verify that the destination wallet displays the expected asset and amount.
  7. Send the remainder only after the test has arrived at the intended address and network.
  8. Keep the old wallet and backup until receipt of the full transfer is confirmed; then secure or retire them deliberately.

This is a practical safety check, not a guarantee that every asset is supported or that a compromised wallet has become safe.

First decide what “migration” means

People often say they are “moving a wallet” when they are doing one of two technically different things. A recovery phrase controls the accounts derived from it. Entering that phrase into compatible wallet software can restore the same accounts and balances, but it does not create a blockchain transfer. The assets remain at the same addresses.

A funds migration sends a transaction from an old address to a destination address, usually created from a new recovery phrase. The blockchain records that transfer, and the destination wallet merely reads the resulting balance. Installing, resetting, or deleting an app does not move funds on its own.

Question Restore the same wallet Move funds to a new wallet
What changes on-chain? Nothing; the same accounts and addresses are derived again. A signed transaction moves the selected asset to a different address.
What controls access? The original recovery phrase or private keys. The destination wallet’s keys, plus the old wallet’s keys until the transfer is complete.
What is the main verification? Confirm that the phrase restores the expected accounts in the genuine wallet software. Confirm the complete receiving address, asset, network, test receipt, and final receipt.
Does it make an exposed phrase safe? No. Anyone who obtained the phrase can still control those accounts. Only a transfer to addresses controlled by a fresh, protected phrase removes the funds from the old accounts.

If your goal is simply to use a different interface, restoration may be sufficient. If you suspect the old phrase was exposed, restoration on another phone or computer does not solve the exposure; create new keys and transfer the assets instead.

Prepare the destination wallet safely

Use the official software or device

Download the wallet application from the wallet maker’s verified distribution channel, or initialize the hardware device using its own setup flow. Do not follow a search-ad advertisement, a message from an unsolicited “support” account, or a pop-up asking for your recovery phrase. Legitimate support does not need that phrase or a private key to diagnose a problem.

Before funding a new wallet, finish its setup while it is empty. Record the recovery phrase exactly as the wallet instructs, on a physical medium kept offline. Do not photograph it, paste it into cloud notes, or type it into a website. Anyone with the phrase may control the accounts it restores.

When moving to hardware

MetaMask’s hardware-wallet guidance recommends creating a new recovery phrase on the hardware wallet instead of importing the phrase from an online wallet. Importing an old phrase that has been entered on an internet-connected device preserves the old exposure; putting that phrase behind a new casing does not recreate an offline-key security model.

A hardware wallet is optional, not a prerequisite for migration. Its security benefit comes from keeping signing keys off internet-connected devices and requiring transaction approval on the device. You still have to verify the destination address and network, protect the device’s phrase, and read every signing prompt.

Make a destination record

Write down, separately from the recovery phrase, the wallet account label, the asset you intend to move, the network selected by the destination interface, and the receiving address you are about to verify. This record helps you notice when an address has changed between a test and a later transfer. Never store the phrase alongside this operational note.

Generate and inspect the receiving address

Select the asset first

Open the destination wallet, select the particular asset, and choose its receiving action. Do not copy an address from a generic account screen if the wallet asks you to select a token or chain. Wallets can display several networks for assets with similar names, and the correct choice depends on where the asset currently resides and which network the destination supports.

Compare the complete address

Copy the address using the wallet’s copy function, then compare it character by character with the address shown in the source wallet’s send screen. Check the beginning, middle, and end, not just a few leading or trailing characters. Malware can replace a copied address with one controlled by someone else while preserving a familiar-looking prefix.

For a hardware wallet, first read the address in the wallet software and then request the device to display or verify that address. Approve it only when the entire value on the device matches the software display. The device screen is the trusted display for the address it will authorize; a computer screen alone is not enough when the device offers an independent check.

Ethereum.org’s security guidance states: “Always make sure the address you are sending to exactly matches the desired recipient’s address before sending a transaction.” Treat that as a pre-signing requirement, not a post-transfer troubleshooting step.

Use an independent comparison for high-value moves

For a large balance, have the destination address displayed on a second, trusted channel that you control, such as a written record created directly from the initialized wallet. Do not use a support agent or an address supplied in an unsolicited message as the comparison source. If any character differs, stop and generate a fresh receiving address through the official wallet interface.

Confirm the correct asset and network

An address that looks valid can still be paired with the wrong chain. Trezor’s migration guidance specifically warns that using the wrong network for Ethereum or ERC-20 transfers can result in lost funds. Verify the network in both the source send screen and the destination receive screen; do not infer it from the address prefix alone.

Check What to confirm Why it matters
Asset name and contract/token selection The source balance and destination receive page refer to the same asset, not a similarly named token. Different assets can use similar symbols while remaining unrelated.
Blockchain network The same supported network is selected on both sides, including the network label used for an EVM asset. A wrong-chain deposit may not appear in the destination wallet and can be difficult or impossible to recover.
Destination support The destination wallet explicitly supports that asset on that network. An address format alone does not establish that the wallet can display or control the asset.
Fee currency The source wallet has the network’s required fee balance for the transaction. A transfer can remain unsent or fail if the source account cannot pay the network fee.

Do not apply one universal network rule to every asset. Follow the exact network choices exposed by the official wallet interfaces and the asset’s documented transfer instructions.

Send a small test transaction

When a test is appropriate

For a substantial transfer, a small test reduces the amount exposed while you check the route. It is especially useful when you have never sent to the destination before, when a hardware wallet is newly initialized, or when the source and destination use different wallet applications.

A test costs a network fee and cannot prove every property of the migration. If the old wallet is actively compromised, waiting may increase the attacker’s opportunity; use the emergency branch described below instead of treating a routine test as mandatory.

How to run it

  1. In the source wallet, open the send screen for the exact asset and network.
  2. Paste the destination address from the verified receiving screen.
  3. Compare the complete address again, confirm the network label, and review the fee and amount.
  4. Send an amount large enough to be visible after fees but small enough that an error would be tolerable.
  5. Record the transaction identifier shown by the source wallet.
  6. Wait for the wallet’s stated confirmation status, then independently view the transaction in the destination wallet or a reputable network explorer opened through the wallet’s own link.
  7. Confirm that the destination account shows the correct asset and received amount, not merely that a transaction is marked “sent.”

Do not send the remainder because the transaction was broadcast. Wait until the test has reached the intended address and the destination wallet recognizes it on the intended chain.

What to do if the test does not appear

  • Check the transaction status and confirmation count in the source wallet.
  • Recheck the network; a pending or completed transaction on another chain will not necessarily appear in the destination account you are viewing.
  • Confirm that you opened the destination account associated with the receiving address, rather than another account in the same wallet.
  • Use the transaction identifier and the wallet maker’s official support documentation. Never disclose the recovery phrase or private key while asking for help.
  • Do not send another test until you understand whether the first transaction is pending, confirmed elsewhere, or sent to an incorrect address.

Send the remainder and preserve access to the old wallet

After the test is confirmed, repeat the address, asset, and network checks for the full transfer. A wallet may generate a new receiving address between transactions, so use the address currently displayed by the destination for the specific asset rather than assuming the test address is still the correct one.

Review the final amount and network fee on the signing screen. Hardware-wallet users should verify the destination and amount on the device before approving. Software-wallet users should read the complete prompt and reject any request that differs from the transfer they initiated.

Keep the old wallet installed or otherwise accessible, together with its backup, until the destination displays the full expected balance and the relevant transactions are confirmed. Do not discard a seed backup immediately after broadcasting; a delay, fee problem, or partial transfer may still require you to inspect the source account.

If the old wallet may be compromised

A suspected compromise changes the priority. Signs can include a recovery phrase entered into an unsolicited site, an unknown transaction, malware that replaces copied addresses, or a private key exposed in a screenshot or cloud backup. In that situation, the old phrase should be treated as controlled by an attacker.

  1. Stop entering the old phrase or private key into any additional device or website.
  2. Initialize a destination wallet with a fresh recovery phrase through the official software or hardware setup.
  3. Verify the destination address and network as far as the situation permits.
  4. Move assets to the fresh addresses promptly, prioritizing assets that can be spent by the suspected attacker. Ensure the source account can pay the network fee.
  5. Use independently verified official wallet guidance for incident-specific decisions. The reviewed official sources do not provide one universal response plan for every compromise, so avoid improvising with advice from anonymous accounts.

In an active compromise, a conventional small test can create delay. You may need to balance the smaller-at-risk benefit against the possibility that an attacker is watching the old account. Do not claim that importing the old phrase into a hardware wallet has fixed the problem; it has not removed the original exposure.

Recovery phrases, private keys, and signing prompts

The recovery phrase is the master backup for the accounts it restores. A person, site, extension, or “support” representative who obtains it can recreate those accounts and sign transactions. The same rule applies to individual private keys. No legitimate support workflow requires you to disclose either.

  • Keep the phrase offline and private; do not type it into an unsolicited form.
  • Verify the wallet’s identity before installing software or following recovery instructions.
  • Do not approve a transaction merely because the wallet application labels it as routine. Read the recipient, asset, network, amount, and fee.
  • Never sign a message or transaction you do not understand, particularly when a website asks you to “verify” ownership.
  • Store any physical backup where loss, theft, fire, or unauthorized access is considered in your threat model.

Ethereum.org describes hardware wallets as a way to keep private keys offline, while its wallet guidance emphasizes that responsibility for the recovery phrase remains with the user. Offline storage reduces online exposure; it does not compensate for a phrase that was already revealed.

What a test transaction proves—and what it cannot prove

A confirmed test demonstrates that, under the tested conditions, a small amount reached the destination address on the selected network and was recognized by the destination wallet. That is valuable evidence about the route you are about to use.

It does not prove:

  • that the recovery phrase backup was written correctly or can restore every account;
  • that every token, coin, or network you own is supported by the destination;
  • that the old wallet has never been compromised;
  • that a later address generated by the destination will be correct;
  • that a wrong-network transfer can be recovered;
  • that the destination device or computer is free from every form of malware.

Use separate checks for those questions. A test is a route check, not a complete security audit.

Common failure modes and the right response

Symptom Likely issue Safe response
The copied address differs in the middle or at the end. Copy-replacement malware, a stale address, or a transcription error. Cancel the send, obtain a new address from the official destination interface, and verify it on the hardware device if available.
The destination shows no balance after a confirmed transaction. Wrong account, wrong network, unsupported asset, or a destination interface that has not indexed the token. Use the transaction identifier to establish the actual chain and recipient; do not send again until the discrepancy is explained.
The source wallet reports insufficient fee funds. The account lacks the network’s fee currency. Follow the official wallet’s fee guidance. Do not substitute a different network or token merely to avoid the fee.
A hardware device shows an address unlike the computer. The computer display may be altered, or the wrong account may be selected. Reject the prompt and investigate. Treat the device display as the address that would be authorized.
A support contact asks for the phrase or private key. Likely fraud; legitimate support does not need wallet secrets. End the conversation and contact support through a channel you located independently.
A phrase was entered into a website or shared. The old accounts may be compromised. Initialize a fresh destination phrase and follow the compromise procedure rather than restoring the exposed phrase.

Do not confuse a migration test with an exchange ownership check

Coinbase documents a “small deposit test” for a separate wallet-ownership verification process. That procedure uses an exact requested deposit amount and a 48-hour completion window. It is not the same as sending a small test from your old wallet to your new wallet to validate an address and network. For a migration, follow the destination wallet’s receive instructions and verify your own on-chain receipt; do not assume an exchange’s ownership workflow applies.

After the migration is confirmed

  1. Compare the destination balances with the amounts you intended to transfer, accounting for network fees.
  2. Check that each transferred asset appears under the expected account and network.
  3. Back up the destination recovery phrase offline and verify that the backup is legible without exposing it to an internet-connected device.
  4. Remove old wallet extensions or apps only after you are certain no assets remain in the old accounts and you have retained any records needed for tax or audit purposes.
  5. If the old phrase was exposed, label it as compromised and never reuse it for new funds.
  6. Keep transaction identifiers and dates in a private record so you can demonstrate what moved and when.

Bitcoin.org, Ethereum.org, Trezor, and MetaMask all place the same responsibility on the signer: check the recipient and transaction details before approval, keep seed material secret, and treat transfers as irreversible once accepted by the network. No named statistical failure rate has been established for wallet migrations, so a careful verification sequence is more defensible than relying on an assumed error percentage.
