Verify the seller, the product, and your recourse separately before you pay. Obtain the seller’s legal identity and return address, independently confirm authorization for branded goods, request origin and traceability records, match the exact model to your country’s safety and connectivity requirements, and keep payment and dispute protection on-platform. A marketplace badge, high review count, or platform policy can reduce risk, but none proves that a particular listing is genuine, compliant, or supported where you live.
What “verified” actually means
There are three different questions behind a supposedly trustworthy listing:
- Who is accountable? You should be able to identify the legal business that invoices you, receives payment, handles returns, and can be contacted after the sale.
- Is this product genuine and lawfully sourced? A genuine brand name, serial number, or certificate is useful only when it can be traced to the manufacturer or an authorized supply chain.
- Can you legally and practically use it in your country? An authentic item may still have the wrong voltage, radio configuration, language labeling, software region, warranty territory, or safety approval.
Complete verification therefore produces an evidence trail, not a feeling of confidence. Reviews, “verified seller” labels, store age, and attractive photographs are secondary signals. They do not replace identity documents, authorization, traceability, compliance evidence, and an actionable return or warranty path.
1. Identify the accountable seller before discussing price
Capture the seller’s legal details
Save the listing and ask the seller to provide the business information that will appear on your purchase record. Record:

- the registered legal name in the seller’s jurisdiction;
- business-license or registration details and the issuing authority;
- the operating address, telephone number, and business email;
- the marketplace store name, store age, and the name shown on the invoice;
- the name of the payment recipient;
- the warehouse and return address; and
- the person or company responsible for after-sales service.
Chinese online-trade rules require operators to disclose license information and truthful details about the seller, product, price, delivery, returns, safety, and after-sales service. The practical test is consistency: the name on the license should match the invoice entity, payment recipient, authorization letter, and return address, or the seller should explain the relationship in writing.
Reconcile every identity in the transaction

Use public signals correctly
Store age, transaction volume, reviews, response rate, and platform badges can help you compare otherwise similar sellers, but they are not identity proof. Reviews may describe a different batch or an unverified variant, and badges show that a platform applied a process—not that every unit in the store is authentic. Treat them as screening information after you have obtained accountable contact details.
2. Verify authorization for branded goods
Seller identity and brand authorization are separate checks. A legally registered company may still be selling unauthorized imports, used goods described as new, or counterfeits.

Ask for a certificate or letter issued by the brand owner or an authorized master distributor. It should identify:
- the seller’s exact legal name;
- the territory in which the authorization applies;
- the product category, brand, and relevant model family;
- the start and expiry dates; and
- the issuer’s name, title, signature or digital verification method, and contact channel.
A generic “authorized dealer” image, an undated PDF, or a document naming a different company is not sufficient. Check that the model and territory cover the item you intend to buy; authorization to sell accessories, for example, does not establish authorization for regulated hardware.

Confirm it outside the seller’s message thread
- Find the brand owner’s official support or channel-partner contact independently of the listing.
- Send the document number, seller legal name, and product category through that channel.
- Ask whether the authorization is valid for the seller, territory, and date of your intended purchase.
- Save the reply with the document and the listing in your evidence file.
AliExpress policy permits branded products when the brand owner has issued an authorization certificate and prohibits counterfeit or unauthorized listings. That policy is useful leverage, but the seller still has to prove that the certificate is genuine and applies to the exact transaction.
3. Establish origin and traceability
For a new branded product, request records that connect the unit to a manufacturer or recognized distributor. Ask for commercial invoices, batch or lot numbers, serial-number ranges, manufacturer and distributor identities, applicable test reports, and a traceable logistics path. Do not send sensitive personal information to satisfy a request; redact unrelated customer data while leaving names, dates, quantities, and product identifiers visible.
Evidence strength varies

Alibaba seller terms require sellers to retain documents that may prove lawful origin and to accept random quality or authenticity inspections. Use that obligation as a request for records, not as a guarantee that an individual listing has already been inspected.
Check the physical identifiers after delivery
Before opening sealed packaging when a return policy depends on condition, photograph the shipping label, seals, serial number, lot code, model plate, manuals, and included accessories. Compare them with the invoice and the manufacturer’s documentation. A missing, altered, duplicated, or poorly printed identifier is a reason to pause use and contact the platform and brand owner.
4. Match the exact product to your country
“Genuine” does not mean “supported in your country.” Confirm the complete model number and hardware revision, not merely the family name in the title.

Electrical and radio compatibility
- Check input voltage, frequency, plug type, power rating, and whether an adapter is approved for continuous use.
- For wireless equipment, confirm the radio bands, transmission power, firmware region, and approval required by your national regulator.
- For batteries and chargers, verify the chemistry, capacity, transport markings, charging standard, and replacement availability.
An item that powers on can still violate local rules or create a safety risk if its radio emissions, insulation, grounding, or charger configuration differs from the version sold domestically.

Labels, manuals, and certification marks
Check that the package and device carry the labels required in your market, including importer or responsible-person details where applicable, electrical ratings, warnings, disposal marks, and language requirements. Match each certification mark to the exact model and revision in the issuing body’s records; a logo printed on a box is not evidence by itself. Chinese product-quality law prohibits falsified origin and certification marks and counterfeit or substandard goods, but enforcement after import does not eliminate your need to check before payment.
Software, account, and service restrictions
Ask whether the firmware is region locked, whether an account can be created from your country, which languages are available, and whether cloud functions will continue if the seller’s account or local service closes. Confirm access to security updates, replacement parts, repair centers, and technical documentation. A cheaper domestic-market version may be authentic yet unusable with your network, app store, payment system, or regulatory settings.
Regulated and safety-critical products
For medical devices, electrical equipment, children’s products, protective equipment, vehicles, and other regulated goods, require model-specific compliance evidence and a named party responsible for recalls and warranty work in your country. If the seller cannot explain who will notify you and provide a remedy for a safety defect, the lowest price is not a rational trade-off.
5. Protect payment, returns, and dispute rights
Keep payment on the marketplace
Do not move to a personal bank account, cryptocurrency, gift card, or an off-platform “discount” link. On-platform payment preserves the order record and gives the platform a defined transaction to review. Confirm the currency, taxes, import charges, duties, brokerage fees, and any payment-release condition before approving the order; a low listing price can become expensive after landed costs.

Read the operative return terms
Before paying, obtain written answers to these questions:
- How many days do you have to open a dispute?
- What evidence triggers a refund for counterfeit, wrong model, damage, or missing accessories?
- Where must the item be returned?
- Who pays international return shipping, customs, and insurance?
- Will the seller refund after tracking shows delivery, or only after inspection?
- Does opening the package, installing software, or removing a seal affect eligibility?
Save the policy as it appeared on the order date. Platform rules and seller messages can change, while a dispute may depend on the terms attached to your specific order.
Build an evidence file before checkout
Keep the complete listing, seller profile, legal details, authorization document, invoices, serial or lot records, compliance statements, messages, promised warranty terms, payment receipt, and return instructions. Screenshots should include the date, model, price, and seller name. This file proves what was offered and who made each representation if the listing is edited or removed.
6. Stop when the warning signs outweigh the savings
- The seller refuses to provide a legal name, license information, invoice entity, or return address.
- The authorization letter names another company, has no territory or expiry date, or cannot be confirmed by the brand owner.
- Certificates, serial numbers, invoices, and payment details use mismatched names or contain inconsistent formatting and dates.
- The price is materially below comparable offers without a documented explanation such as used condition, missing accessories, an older revision, or a time-limited promotion.
- The listing hides, misspells, or visually imitates a brand name, or uses photographs that show a different model.
- The seller pressures you to pay off-platform, asks you to declare a false value, or promises a warranty that is not written in the order.
- The product’s voltage, radio bands, labels, software region, spare parts, or local service cannot be confirmed.
- The return process depends on an unclear address, an impractical shipping route, or a dispute period shorter than the time needed to test the item.
Alibaba’s intellectual-property policy prohibits deliberately misleading brand-imitation listings and allows actions such as delisting, suspension, or account closure. Those sanctions may remove a listing, but they cannot recover time, data, or customs costs after an unsafe or unsupported purchase. Treat multiple warning signs as a no-go decision rather than an invitation to negotiate harder.

For safety-critical, electrical, medical, child, or regulated products, compliance evidence and an actionable recall and warranty path should outweigh the lowest quote. For a low-risk accessory, you may accept less documentation, but record that it is a deliberate risk decision rather than proof of authenticity.
What to do when a purchase looks counterfeit or unsupported
- Stop using a potentially unsafe item. Disconnect damaged chargers, batteries, electrical equipment, or devices that overheat. Do not modify or dismantle them if doing so could destroy evidence or create a hazard.
- Preserve the condition. Photograph the parcel, labels, seals, model plate, serial number, contents, defects, and software screens. Keep packaging and shipping documents.
- Open the platform dispute before its deadline. Select the most accurate reason—counterfeit, wrong model, materially not as described, safety issue, or missing documentation—and attach the evidence file.
- Notify the seller in writing. State the discrepancy, the remedy requested, and a response deadline. Keep communication in the platform thread.
- Ask the brand owner to verify the unit. Provide serial, lot, photographs, and invoice details. A written confirmation of counterfeit status or regional restriction strengthens the dispute.
- Escalate payment and regulatory channels when appropriate. Contact your card issuer or payment provider within its rules, and report dangerous or counterfeit goods to the relevant marketplace and consumer or product-safety authority. Do not make a public accusation until the evidence is clear.
- Return only under documented instructions. Use tracked, insured shipping when required, declare the contents accurately, and retain proof of delivery and customs paperwork.
What platform rules and Chinese law can—and cannot—do
Chinese market-regulator guidance tells platforms to require supplier-management, purchase-check, quality-control, traceability, anti-counterfeit, and recall measures, and to show consumers truthful, accurate, and complete product and service information. Cross-border guidance also recognizes that imported goods may lack local-language labels or differ from domestic standards; responsible enterprises have disclosure, return, recall, and compensation duties.
Taobao and Tmall Group’s intellectual-property policy states: “The sale of counterfeit and pirated goods on Alibaba platforms is prohibited.” Alibaba and AliExpress seller terms likewise state: “The Seller has the obligation to keep any document that might prove the legitimate origin of its Products,” and that “The Seller undertakes to accept any random inspections of the Products that AliExpress may conduct to verify their quality and authenticity.” These rules create reporting and enforcement routes, not an automatic authenticity certificate for every listing.

A practical go/no-go decision
Proceed only when all four gates are satisfied:
- Accountability: the legal seller, invoice entity, payment recipient, and return party are identified and reconciled.
- Authenticity: branded goods have independently confirmed authorization or a traceable, lawful origin record.
- Use and support: the exact model and revision meet destination-country requirements, with a realistic warranty, parts, and recall path.
- Recourse: payment stays protected, the dispute deadline is known, and the return route and evidence requirements are workable.
If any gate fails—especially for a safety-critical or regulated product—do not let reviews, urgency, or a discount substitute for the missing evidence. The safest bargain is the one you can authenticate, operate legally, and return or repair when something goes wrong.
