To check a Bitcoin payment, look up its transaction ID (TXID) on a Bitcoin block explorer, verify the expected amount and receiving address in the outputs, and check whether the transaction has been included in a block. To trace it afterward, follow the specific output into the later transaction that spends it. A block explorer shows public ledger data; it does not identify the people behind addresses.

What you need before looking up a transaction

Ask the sender or service for the transaction ID, usually called a TXID or transaction hash. It identifies a transaction record; it is not a receiving address. A TXID lookup does not require a wallet login. Never enter a seed phrase or private key into an explorer: neither is needed to search public transaction data.

Confirm which network the payment used. A transaction made on another network will not appear in a Bitcoin mainnet explorer. For a public lookup, a computer or paid service is not required; a Bitcoin Core node is an optional route when you want to consult data from software you operate yourself.

How to check a Bitcoin transaction

  1. Open a Bitcoin block explorer. Make sure it is showing the network the sender used, such as Bitcoin mainnet.
  2. Search the TXID. Check that the result displays the same transaction ID you were given.
  3. Inspect the outputs. Find the expected receiving address and amount. A transaction can contain multiple inputs and multiple outputs, so do not assume that one transaction corresponds to one sender and one recipient.
  4. Check its confirmation status. An unconfirmed transaction has not yet been included in a block. When it is included, it has one confirmation; each later block adds another.
  5. Review the other transaction details if needed. Depending on the explorer, the page may show inputs, outputs, fees, timestamps, and block information. These are features of that service’s presentation, not a guarantee that all explorers display identical fields.

A transaction page is a useful view of the public ledger, but the explorer is a service presenting data it has obtained. For an ordinary one-off check, that may be sufficient. If the result is missing or materially unexpected, verify the TXID and network first, then compare another explorer. A second explorer is still another third-party view; for greater independence, consult a synchronized Bitcoin Core node.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

What confirmations mean—and what they do not

Confirmation count measures a transaction’s inclusion in the blockchain and the blocks built on top of it. Bitcoin.org says blocks arrive about every ten minutes on average, but block discovery is probabilistic, so this is not a promised wait time: an individual confirmation can take less or more time. A displayed status can change as new blocks are found.

There is no universal confirmation count that makes every payment safe. The appropriate threshold depends on the recipient’s risk and policy; Bitcoin.org notes that users decide when a transaction is sufficiently confirmed.

How to trace where a Bitcoin output went

Trace an output, not an address as though it were a complete account history. In Bitcoin, an input spends a specific earlier output, identified by the earlier transaction’s TXID and the output’s index. The later transaction’s outputs create new spendable conditions, and one or more of those outputs may later be spent in turn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the transaction you are checking. Locate the output for the address and amount you want to follow.
  2. Open the prior transaction or output reference when tracing backward. An input points to the earlier transaction and identifies which output it spends.
  3. To trace forward, find a later transaction that spends that exact output. Follow the matching input, then inspect the later transaction’s outputs.
  4. Repeat only for the output you are interested in. If the later transaction has several outputs, they are separate outputs to assess; do not treat the transaction as one indivisible payment to a single destination.

This process follows on-chain value movement. It does not prove who controlled an address, who sent or received funds in the real world, or why a transaction occurred. The ledger records transaction data, not names.

Which way to verify is appropriate?

Method What it is useful for Trade-off
Public block explorer A quick lookup of transaction fields and observed confirmation status; available fields vary by provider. Convenient, but it is a third-party presentation of data.
A second public explorer Cross-checking a missing or unexpected result against another provider’s view. Provides another view, but both services remain third parties.
Bitcoin Core node or RPC Checking blockchain data available to a node you operate; Bitcoin Core documents wallet GUI and command-line/API modes. Requires installation and synchronization. The node may not know an unconfirmed transaction that is outside its mempool.

Bitcoin Core’s transaction lookup documentation distinguishes confirmation and block information and describes cases where an unconfirmed transaction may have no known block data. A missing result from one explorer or node alone does not prove that a transaction was never broadcast: check the network and TXID, compare data views, and account for what the node knows.
