Ask YouTube lets you search with a complete question instead of a short keyword phrase. On a supported computer, open YouTube, select Ask YouTube in the Search bar, type what you want to know, and review the generated explanation and video results. You can then choose a suggested prompt or type a question in Ask a follow-up to narrow the results.
The feature is rolling out gradually. As of October 13, 2026, YouTube says it is available in English to users in the United States on computers, mobile devices and TVs. It is not available for supervised child accounts or in YouTube Kids; on TV, Apple TV is excluded. Availability can change as YouTube expands the rollout.
What YouTube’s conversational search does
Ask YouTube is a conversational layer inside YouTube Search. Instead of entering a few keywords and opening results one by one, you describe a question, task or comparison in ordinary language. YouTube generates an informational response and assembles related videos from its catalog.

A response can contain explanatory text, full-length videos, Shorts and relevant clips. When YouTube identifies a useful section of a video, a clip may begin at the timestamp it considers relevant. The result displays the creator’s channel name and the video title so you can open the source video and inspect the surrounding context.

YouTube says ranking considers relevance, engagement and quality. Playlists and Premium-exclusive content are not currently eligible for these conversational-search responses, so a conventional search may still be necessary when you specifically need either type of content.
Who can use Ask YouTube
The following availability details apply to YouTube’s rollout information published October 12–13, 2026:
| Requirement or context | Current status |
|---|---|
| Country | Available to users in the United States; expansion to other regions is gradual. |
| Search language | English. |
| Computer | Supported for eligible users through YouTube on the web. |
| Mobile | Supported on eligible phones and tablets. |
| Television | Supported on eligible TV devices and streaming setups, except Apple TV. |
| Supervised child account | Not available. |
| YouTube Kids | Not available. |
These are rollout conditions, not permanent product guarantees. A user who meets the listed criteria may still lack the control while YouTube enables it for accounts, devices or regions in stages.
How to use Ask YouTube on a computer
- Open YouTube. Sign in if your account normally requires sign-in and make sure you are using a current desktop browser.
- Open Search. Click the YouTube Search bar at the top of the page.
- Choose Ask YouTube. Select the Ask YouTube option rather than submitting a conventional keyword search.
- Write a complete request. Describe the information or task you need. Include a location, time frame, audience, budget or style when those details affect the videos that would help.
- Submit the question. Review the generated response and the videos, Shorts or clips that accompany it.
- Refine the result. Select one of YouTube’s suggested prompts, or enter a new question in the Ask a follow-up field.
A short phrase such as “road trip videos” leaves the system with little context. A request such as “Plan a three-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara and find videos that show the route, stops and driving conditions” gives it a clear objective and criteria for selecting material.

How to use it on a phone or tablet
- Open the YouTube app on a supported phone or tablet in the United States.
- Open the app’s Search control and select Ask YouTube when it appears.
- Type a natural-language question rather than a list of disconnected keywords.
- Read the generated explanation and open the recommended long-form videos, Shorts or clips.
- Use a suggested prompt or the follow-up field to add constraints, request another angle or ask for more detail.
The mobile rollout follows the same account, language and regional limits as the web version. If the app shows only ordinary search, use the troubleshooting checks below; the absence of the button does not mean that your question is formatted incorrectly.
How to start Ask YouTube on a TV
TV navigation varies by device, but YouTube documents a common path:
- Open YouTube Home or the Search screen on the TV.
- Use the on-screen Ask button, the on-screen keyboard or the remote’s microphone to begin.
- If Ask YouTube does not open automatically, choose Ask YouTube from the available search options.
- Speak into the remote microphone or select a suggested prompt.
- Read the response on the television and use a follow-up prompt or voice question to refine it.
Ask YouTube is not available on Apple TV according to the YouTube Help information dated October 13, 2026. Other TV and streaming-device availability depends on the ongoing rollout.

Include the task
Use an action such as “teach,” “compare,” “plan,” “show,” “troubleshoot” or “explain.” For example, “Teach a child to ride a bike step by step” is more precise than “bike videos.”
Add constraints
Specify the constraints that matter: destination, trip length, skill level, equipment, tone, duration, price range or experience level. You can ask for a particular tone or style when that will make the explanation easier to follow.
Ask for a format
If you want a sequence, say so: “Give me a beginner-friendly sequence with one video for setup, one for practice and one for common mistakes.” If you need a comparison, identify the criteria: “Compare noise-canceling headphones for travel, focusing on comfort, battery life and airplane use.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse follow-ups instead of starting over
Once YouTube has produced an initial set, ask for the missing dimension: “Show shorter videos,” “Use sources for beginners,” “Focus on public-transit stops,” or “Explain the second option in more detail.” Follow-ups preserve the subject of the conversation while changing its direction.

| Troubleshooting | Explain how to diagnose a laptop that powers on but shows no image. | Separate checks that are safe for a beginner from repairs requiring a technician. |
How to interpret the response
Ask YouTube’s answer is a navigation aid, not a replacement for watching the source material. Read the explanatory text to understand why items were selected, then open the underlying video when a detail matters.
- Check the title and channel. Confirm that the result actually addresses your question and note who published it.
- Watch beyond an automatically selected clip. A timestamped excerpt may omit a qualification, correction or safety warning elsewhere in the video.
- Compare several results. The response can combine long-form videos, Shorts and clips, which may present different levels of detail or different opinions.
- Remember the ranking criteria. Relevance, engagement and quality influence results; a prominent result is not automatically the most authoritative source for your situation.
YouTube states that generated responses are for informational purposes, do not represent YouTube’s views, and can vary in quality and accuracy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to verify an answer before acting on it
For an ordinary discovery task, the response can help you find a useful starting point. For a consequential decision, treat it as an index to sources and verify the claim independently.
- Ask the same question in another way. Different wording can surface different videos and expose uncertainty.
- Request more than one perspective. Ask for contrasting explanations or opinions rather than accepting a single summary.
- Open the source videos. Check the publication context, date, demonstrations and any qualifications that the generated text did not include.
- Confirm important facts elsewhere. Use authoritative documentation, a qualified professional or another independent source when accuracy has real consequences.
YouTube specifically warns against relying on generated responses for medical, legal, financial or other professional advice. Do not use an Ask YouTube summary as a diagnosis, legal interpretation, investment recommendation or substitute for a qualified practitioner.

- Expand your home entertainment without buying a new TV; Google Chromecast lets you stream your favorites from your phone, tablet, or laptop; no remote needed
- Chromecast is easy to set up up; just plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, and start streaming to turn your TV into a smart TV; it works with almost any TV that has an HDMI port

- With Chromecast, you can stream, pause, play, or adjust the volume right from your phone with just a tap; while you’re streaming, you can still use your phone as you normally do
- Mirror your laptop screen or turn your tablet into an even better entertainment system; surf the web or see your media on the big screen
Why the Ask YouTube button may be missing
Missing access is usually an availability issue rather than a prompt issue. Check these conditions in order:
- Region: YouTube’s current announcement covers users in the United States; the feature is still expanding elsewhere.
- Language: The documented rollout is for English searches.
- Device: Apple TV is excluded, and other TV devices may not yet be enabled.
- Account type: Supervised child accounts and YouTube Kids do not support Ask YouTube.
- Rollout timing: Even an eligible U.S. account may not have the control while YouTube activates it progressively.
- App or browser state: Update the YouTube app or reload the web page, then reopen Search. This can refresh the interface, but it cannot override regional or account restrictions.
If ordinary Search works but Ask YouTube remains absent after these checks, use standard keyword search until the feature reaches your account or device.
Privacy and conversation history
YouTube says it collects the queries and feedback submitted through Ask YouTube to provide, improve and develop its products and services. Past conversations can be reviewed or deleted in My Activity.
Recommended Free Tools
Deleting a topic from Search-bar history removes only the latest conversation for that topic; earlier conversations about the same topic may remain. YouTube also says trained human reviewers may read and process conversations. Before review, conversations are disconnected from Google Accounts, and automated tools are used to remove personal information such as email addresses and phone numbers. Conversations reviewed by humans are kept separately for up to three years.
Do not enter passwords, financial account details, confidential work information, private health information or any other material you would not want processed under those terms. YouTube says Ask YouTube conversations are not used to show ads, but that does not eliminate the service’s collection and retention practices.
When conventional YouTube Search is still better
Ask YouTube is useful when you need synthesis, guided discovery or a sequence of related videos. Standard search can be the better tool when you need an exact title, a known channel, a playlist, Premium-exclusive content or a precise phrase. Because playlists and Premium-exclusive videos are not currently eligible for conversational-search responses, switch to ordinary Search when those are central to the task.
A practical workflow for reliable video discovery
- Start with the outcome. Ask for the task you want to complete, not merely the topic name.
- Add the constraints. Include audience, location, time, skill level, equipment and preferred style.
- Review the mix. Separate full explanations from Shorts and timestamped clips.
- Refine once. Use a follow-up to correct the level, format or viewpoint instead of rewriting the entire prompt.
- Verify consequential details. Watch the source and check an independent authority before acting.
- Protect sensitive information. Keep confidential or personally identifying data out of the conversation.
This workflow uses Ask YouTube for what it does best—turning a broad natural-language request into a set of relevant videos—while keeping final judgment with you.
