On a Galaxy Z Fold, the reliable way to watch YouTube beside another app is Samsung Multi window. Unfold the phone, open YouTube, open Recents, tap the YouTube icon, choose Open in split screen view, and then select the second app. If YouTube is not offered, try Samsung’s experimental Multi window for all apps setting. If you only need a small video floating above another app, use YouTube picture-in-picture (PiP) instead; PiP is a different feature from split screen.
What split screen does on a Galaxy Z Fold
Split screen divides the Fold’s large inner display into two app areas. YouTube occupies one pane and a second supported app occupies the other, so you can watch a video while reading, messaging, taking notes or using another app. Samsung calls the underlying system feature Multi window. It supports split-screen and, on supported software, pop-up views.
App support is not universal. Samsung warns that some apps are not designed for Multi window, and the exact labels and controls can differ by Galaxy Z Fold generation, One UI release, region and app version. The procedure below follows Samsung’s Fold4 support example and the current general Multi window guidance; your menus may use slightly different wording.

Use the unfolded inner display for the most comfortable layout. The second app must appear in the list of apps available for split screen.

- Unfold the phone. Open the Galaxy Z Fold’s main inner display rather than the cover screen.
- Open YouTube. Start the video you want to watch. You can leave it paused while setting up the layout, then resume it after both panes are visible.
- Open Recents. Use your phone’s Recents control or gesture to display the cards for recently used apps.
- Open YouTube’s app menu. Tap the YouTube app icon above its Recents card. Do not tap the video preview itself; the icon opens the window-management choices.
- Choose the split-screen command. Tap Open in split screen view. On another One UI version, the wording may be shortened or presented with a split-window icon.
- Select the second app. Choose the app you want below or beside YouTube from the available choices. The Fold will place both apps in the Multi window layout.
- Start watching and working. Tap YouTube’s pane to control playback, then tap the other pane when you need to type, scroll or interact with it.
If the divider is available on your software version, drag it toward YouTube to make the video area larger, or toward the other app to give that app more room. The divider’s exact appearance and adjustment range vary by model and software.
Resize the panes and reuse the layout
Give YouTube more or less space
Split screen is not necessarily a 50/50 arrangement. Drag the central divider until the video and the working app have usable space. A wider YouTube pane is helpful for watching controls and captions; a wider second pane is better when that app needs a keyboard, a long document or a detailed page. If the divider does not move, that particular app combination or software build may impose a fixed arrangement.
Create an app pair when the option appears
Samsung’s Fold guidance describes app pairs as a way to relaunch two apps together. After you arrange YouTube and the second app, look for the app-pair or save-pair control in the Multi window interface. Availability and icon placement vary by device. Saving a pair is useful when you repeatedly combine YouTube with the same notes, browser or messaging app, but it is not required for one-time split screen use.

Use the Multi window tray instead
Supported Galaxy Z Fold models can provide a Multi window tray or edge panel containing app shortcuts. Samsung describes dragging an app from the tray into a screen position to launch it in split screen or pop-up view.
- Open YouTube on the unfolded inner display.
- Reveal the Multi window tray using the gesture or on-screen handle configured on your device.
- Drag the second app from the tray to the side or position indicated by the split-screen highlight.
- Release it when the target area is shown, then adjust the divider if the control is available.
Tray availability, the gesture used to reveal it and the visual instructions differ across Fold models and One UI versions. If you cannot find the tray, use the Recents method; it is the clearest route documented in Samsung’s Fold4 procedure.
When YouTube or the other app is missing
Check whether the app supports Multi window
The app picker only lists applications that the current software considers compatible. A missing YouTube entry, or a missing second app, can therefore be a compatibility limitation rather than a problem with your taps. Samsung explicitly notes that some apps may not support Multi window.

Try Multi window for all apps in Labs
Some Galaxy devices expose an experimental override that allows apps not designed for the layout to open in split screen or pop-up view:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Open Labs.
- Look for Multi window for all apps and turn it on if it is present.
- Return to YouTube, open Recents, tap the YouTube icon and check for Open in split screen view again.
Labs is experimental. Samsung does not guarantee that every app will behave correctly with the override, and the option may be absent on your model or software version. If enabling it causes an app to display badly or fail to launch, turn the setting off and use a supported app combination instead.
Picture-in-picture: the better choice for a floating video
Use PiP when your priority is keeping YouTube visible while another app occupies most of the screen. PiP shrinks the video into a movable floating window over the current app. It does not create two equal Multi window panes and does not use the same compatibility path as Samsung split screen.

Enable Android’s PiP permission
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Open the app settings for YouTube.
- Find the Android permission labeled Allow picture-in-picture and enable it.
Enable PiP inside YouTube
- Open YouTube.
- Open YouTube’s Settings.
- Go to Playback.
- Turn on the picture-in-picture option if it is shown.
With a video playing, leave YouTube using the Home gesture or button. When PiP is available for that video and account, YouTube reduces the video to a movable window that you can position over another app. Tap the floating window for its controls; use its close or expand controls to dismiss it or return to YouTube.
YouTube documents a content restriction for PiP: some music content is available in PiP only to Premium members. Consequently, PiP settings can be enabled correctly while a particular music video still refuses to enter the floating mode.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“Open in split screen view” does not appear
- Confirm that you opened the menu from the YouTube icon above its Recents card, not from the card preview.
- Try the unfolded inner display; the cover-screen interface may expose different controls.
- Check Settings > Advanced features > Labs for Multi window for all apps. Treat this as an experiment, not a guaranteed fix.
- If Labs is not present, the option is not supported on that device or software build. Use PiP or another app combination that appears in the picker.
The second app cannot be selected
- Samsung’s compatibility rules may exclude it from Multi window.
- Try launching that app first, then return to Recents and repeat the YouTube procedure.
- If the app remains unavailable, do not assume the Fold is malfunctioning; Samsung warns that some apps do not support the layout.
- Use PiP if your goal is only to keep YouTube visible while working in that app.
YouTube opens, but the video is not visible
- Tap inside the YouTube pane and check that playback is not paused.
- Use the divider to increase YouTube’s share of the display if the video area is too small for its controls.
- Do not confuse YouTube’s full-screen control with Android PiP. YouTube’s in-app full-screen behavior and Android’s PiP behavior can change independently of Samsung’s Multi window menu.
PiP does not start when you leave YouTube
- Verify Android’s YouTube permission: Allow picture-in-picture.
- Verify YouTube’s own Settings > Playback PiP control.
- Try a non-music video if the current content may be subject to YouTube’s Premium restriction.
- If either setting is missing, account for differences in YouTube build, Android version or device software rather than assuming the split-screen procedure is broken.
The menus use different words
Samsung’s support pages cover several foldable generations, and the Fold4 instructions are an example rather than a universal menu map. Look for equivalent labels such as a split-window icon, Multi window, or an app command shown from Recents. The feature’s location and wording can change after a One UI update.

A practical setup for common tasks
Watching YouTube while taking notes
Open YouTube first, create the split-screen layout through Recents, then choose your notes app as the second pane. Move the divider toward the notes pane when you need more writing room; move it back toward YouTube when reading captions or controls.
Watching while browsing
Select the browser as the second app after choosing Open in split screen view. This keeps YouTube in a dedicated pane instead of covering the page with a floating window.
Watching while messaging
Use split screen when you need both apps persistently visible. Use PiP when messages need most of the display and the video only needs to remain visible in a corner.

What the Fold can and cannot guarantee
- It can provide two-app split screen through Samsung Multi window when the selected apps are supported.
- It can offer a floating YouTube window through PiP when Android permission, YouTube’s Playback setting and content eligibility all allow it.
- It cannot force every app to work perfectly. The Labs override is experimental and may not exist on every Fold.
- It does not have one permanent menu sequence for every generation. Samsung’s labels, tray gestures and divider controls vary by model and software version.
