Back up anything you need, identify the SSD by its exact model, and use the manufacturer’s current utility or bootable procedure. Secure Erase, Sanitize, NVMe Format, and PSID Revert can permanently destroy every accessible user-data record on the selected drive. If the SSD is running your operating system, erase it from a supported bootable environment or while attached as a secondary drive—not from the operating system installed on that same disk.

The exact labels, supported interfaces, prerequisites, and boot methods differ by model and utility version. The procedure below shows how to choose the right operation, avoid erasing the wrong disk, handle a missing or locked drive, and decide when a completed progress bar is sufficient for your security requirements.

What secure erase and sanitize actually do

Ordinary deletion and a quick format remove file-system references; they are not automatically a drive sanitization method. A manufacturer-level erase invokes commands implemented by the SSD controller and firmware. Depending on the drive, it may clear user data, discard encryption keys, or perform another vendor-defined sanitization routine.

NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 defines media sanitization as “a process that renders access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort.” The publication was finalized on September 26, 2025, superseding Rev. 1. That definition matters when the drive held confidential business, medical, financial, or regulated information: the acceptable method depends on the information’s sensitivity and your organization’s policy, not merely on whether a utility displayed “complete.”

Secure Erase A controller command intended to remove user data. The implementation and supported interfaces are manufacturer-specific. Whether the exact model supports it, whether the target must be a secondary disk, and whether the utility offers a user-data or cryptographic variant.
Sanitize A broader vendor or standards-based operation that may use block erase, overwrite, crypto erase, or another firmware routine. The maker’s description of the method and any validation or post-operation requirements.
NVMe Format Secure Erase Setting For Intel’s documented NVMe workflow: 0 means no secure erase, 1 means user-data erase, and 2 means crypto erase. That the drive is a supported Intel NVMe SSD and that the selected setting matches your policy.
PSID Revert A reset using the physical identifier printed on a self-encrypting drive. Samsung states that it deletes all data. The exact PSID on the drive label, the selected model and capacity, and whether you have preserved everything needed before confirmation.
Format or quick format A file-system operation; it is not automatically equivalent to a controller sanitize command. Do not substitute it when your goal is sanitization.

A tool detecting an SSD does not prove that every destructive feature is supported. Use the maker’s instructions for the exact model, firmware family, interface, and utility release.

Prepare before opening the erase function

1. Make and verify backups

Copy documents, photographs, application data, encryption keys, password-manager exports, browser profiles, recovery codes, virtual machines, and any license information you may need later. Open a few files from the backup or otherwise verify that it is usable. A secure erase is intended to be irreversible; Samsung explicitly warns that PSID Revert deletes all data.

2. Record the target drive’s identity

Write down the exact model number, capacity, serial number, and interface (SATA or NVMe). If the computer contains several disks, note which one contains the data you intend to remove. Capacity alone is not a safe identifier because multiple drives can have similar sizes.

3. Download only the maker’s current utility and instructions

Use the SSD manufacturer’s official support page. Confirm that the download supports your operating system and drive family. Feature support can vary even within one product line: Samsung says its Magician utility supports Samsung-branded memory products, while functions may differ on Samsung OEM and non-Samsung drives. Intel documents its Memory and Storage Tool for supported Intel SSDs.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model) | External Solid State Drive, Compatible with Laptops & Tablets, Up to 2M Drop Protection, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C to USB-A Cable
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

4. Reduce the chance of selecting the wrong disk

If practical, shut down and disconnect other internal and external storage devices before the destructive step. This is a precaution rather than a universal vendor requirement, but it leaves fewer similarly named disks in the selection list. Keep the target’s model and serial number visible while you work.

5. Plan for a non-running environment

Do not attempt to erase the disk that is currently hosting the running operating system from that same installation. Intel’s documented prerequisites require the target not to be the primary system drive. Depending on the maker, connect the SSD to another computer as a secondary drive or boot from a manufacturer-supported USB or other external environment.

Choose the operation that matches your SSD

Samsung drives: Magician, Secure Erase, and PSID Revert

Samsung’s Magician product information lists Secure Erase and PSID Revert. Samsung’s support material lists Magician 9.0.1 downloads for Windows and macOS. The detailed bootable and PSID behavior cited in Samsung’s 8.0.0 installation guide is version-specific, so compare that guidance with the current guide for your drive before creating media.

PSID Revert requires the PSID printed on the drive label and deletes all data. Treat the characters as case-sensitive if the utility requires that, and verify the drive model and capacity on the confirmation screen. Do not type a PSID from a different drive or from a photograph whose characters you have not checked.

Intel drives: Memory and Storage Tool

Intel’s documented Secure Erase workflow is for supported Intel NVMe SSDs. Its prerequisites include no partitions on the target, the target not being the primary system drive, and the Intel NVMe driver being installed. In the graphical interface, select Secure Erase, choose the target drive, and acknowledge the warning. The utility also documents a command-line path, but the GUI is the safer choice unless you are following Intel’s exact command syntax and device-selection instructions.

Other manufacturers

Look for the maker’s documented Secure Erase, Sanitize, NVMe Format, or similarly named function. Do not infer support from a generic disk utility or from a menu item that merely appears when a drive is detected. If the manufacturer’s tool does not expose an erase feature for the exact model, stop and obtain model-specific guidance rather than guessing a command.

General procedure in the manufacturer utility

  1. Install or launch the official utility. Close applications that may be reading or writing the target. If the utility offers a firmware update, record the current state and follow the maker’s instructions; do not interrupt power during any firmware operation.
  2. Identify the SSD. Match the displayed model, serial number, capacity, and interface to the information you recorded. If anything differs, cancel and investigate.
  3. Open the destructive feature. Select the maker’s documented Secure Erase, Sanitize, NVMe Format, or PSID Revert workflow—not ordinary file deletion or a quick format.
  4. Check prerequisites. Confirm that the drive is not the active system disk, that required drivers are installed, that partitions are removed if the maker requires this, and that the connection mode is supported.
  5. Read the final warning completely. Determine whether the operation is a user-data erase, crypto erase, or another vendor-defined routine. Verify the target one more time and provide any required confirmation text or PSID.
  6. Start the operation and maintain power. Do not unplug the drive, close the utility, force a reboot, or allow the computer to sleep if the maker warns against interruption. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal erase duration or success-rate statistic, so do not rely on an assumed time estimate.
  7. Record the result. Save the completion message, date, utility version, drive identity, selected operation, and any error code. Organizations should retain this record with their sanitization documentation.
  8. Initialize only after the erase is complete. If you are reusing the SSD, follow the maker’s post-erase instructions to initialize it, create a partition, and format it. Those steps make the drive usable again; they are separate from the destructive sanitization operation.

When the SSD is the system drive

An operating system cannot reliably erase the storage from which it is executing. The normal choices are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Secondary-drive method: Shut down, connect the SSD to another supported computer or enclosure, and run the manufacturer utility there. Confirm that the enclosure exposes the commands required by the utility; some adapters do not pass through all SATA or NVMe management commands.
  • Manufacturer bootable media: Create the bootable environment specified by the SSD maker, boot the computer from it, and select the target SSD outside the installed operating system. Follow the exact compatibility notes for that release.
  • Replace-and-erase method: If the computer must remain operational, install or boot from another storage device first, then erase the original SSD as a secondary disk.

Do not assume that any Linux or Windows recovery disk is equivalent to the manufacturer’s supported environment. The required command set, driver, firmware access, and security-state handling may be different.

Connection, BIOS, and “drive not available” problems

Samsung bootable-environment caveats

Samsung’s Magician 8.0.0 guide warns that its Linux bootable solution can have compatibility problems. In the cited scenario, BIOS must use AHCI or ATA mode; SATA IDE mode is not supported. The guide also warns that a BIOS Security Freeze Lock can prevent the operation. These are Samsung-guide details for that version and scenario, not universal rules for every SSD maker or utility.

The utility sees the drive but hides Secure Erase

  • Recheck the exact model and whether it is a branded, OEM, or non-supported drive variant.
  • Verify that the drive is not the primary system disk and that required partitions or drivers meet the maker’s prerequisites.
  • Check whether the connection is direct SATA or NVMe rather than through an adapter that blocks management commands.
  • Read the current model-specific support article for firmware, BIOS, and security-state requirements.

Do not substitute a guessed command when the option is unavailable. Connection method, firmware, drive state, BIOS settings, and utility version can all affect which operations are exposed, and there is no single workaround that applies to every SSD.

The drive is frozen or reports a security lock

Some firmware and BIOS combinations place a drive in a security-frozen state to prevent unauthorized management commands. If the manufacturer documents a supported way to clear that state, follow it exactly. Otherwise, move the SSD to the documented secondary-drive or bootable setup and consult the maker’s instructions. Avoid power-cycling repeatedly during an active erase attempt.

How Secure Erase, crypto erase, and PSID Revert differ

Choosing the name that sounds most secure is not enough. The relevant questions are what the controller actually performs and what your policy requires.

Decision question Why it matters
Is the operation supported by this exact model and interface? A menu item or detected drive does not establish feature support.
Does it erase user data, destroy encryption keys, or use another sanitize method? Intel’s NVMe settings distinguish user-data erase from crypto erase; other makers may use different terminology.
Can the drive be attached as a secondary device or require external boot media? The running system disk is normally unavailable for self-erasure.
What sensitivity level and validation does your organization require? NIST frames sanitization around making access infeasible for a defined level of effort, not around a universal consumer checklist.

For a personal drive being returned or sold, the manufacturer’s supported destructive operation is generally the appropriate starting point when the drive is healthy and the exact model is recognized. For sensitive organizational data, apply the organization’s approved sanitization and validation policy and retain evidence of the method used.

After the utility reports completion

Check what the message proves

A successful message shows that the operation completed from the utility’s perspective. The cited manufacturer material does not establish one independent, universal validation procedure for every SSD. Do not claim more certainty than the tool and your policy allow.

Prepare the SSD for its next use

If you are keeping or selling the drive for ordinary use, follow the maker’s instructions for reinitialization and partitioning. A drive may appear unallocated after a successful erase; that is expected until a new partition table and file system are created.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Document business or regulated erasures

Record the asset identifier, exact model and serial number, operation selected, utility and version, date, operator, completion status, and any required validation result. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 should inform the policy, but your organization remains responsible for defining the sensitivity category and approval process.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Erasing by capacity alone: Two drives can have the same nominal size. Match model and serial number.
  • Running the utility on the boot disk: Use a supported secondary or bootable environment.
  • Assuming “format” means sanitize: Use the manufacturer’s documented destructive command.
  • Using a generic tool because it detects the SSD: Detection does not prove that secure erase is implemented for that drive.
  • Skipping the backup because the drive is being sold: Returns, migrations, and forgotten recovery keys create last-minute data needs.
  • Treating an old guide as current: Samsung’s 8.0.0 bootable caveats should be checked against the current guide, including the Magician 9.0.1 support-page context.
  • Interrupting power: Keep the system powered and follow the maker’s instructions until completion or an explicit error.
  • Inventing a completion time: The reviewed official material supplies no universal time estimate or consumer success-rate statistic.

A practical decision path

  1. Need to erase a personal SSD for resale or return? Back up, identify the exact model, and run the maker’s supported Secure Erase, Sanitize, or PSID procedure from a non-running environment.
  2. Is the drive unsupported or the feature missing? Stop. Check the exact model’s support instructions, connection type, firmware notes, and prerequisites rather than guessing a command.
  3. Is the data sensitive or regulated? Use the operation approved by your sanitization policy, document it, and apply the required validation. A progress bar alone may not satisfy that policy.
  4. Is the SSD failing or inaccessible? Do not assume a software erase succeeded. Escalate to the maker’s support process or your organization’s media-disposal procedure; the sources cited here do not define a universal recovery or destruction method for failed drives.

Key takeaways

  • Back up first and verify the target by exact model, serial number, capacity, and interface.
  • Use the SSD maker’s current utility or bootable instructions; support varies by model and version.
  • Secure Erase, Sanitize, NVMe Format, and PSID Revert are not universal synonyms.
  • Do not erase the active operating-system disk from itself.
  • For organizational data, judge the method against a documented sanitization policy informed by NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2.
