To use a Pixel phone as a webcam, connect it to the other device with a USB cable that supports data, tap the Pixel’s Charging this device through USB notification, and choose Webcam under Use USB for. Then select the Pixel as the camera in your video-call app. The receiving device must implement USB Video Class (UVC); a charge-only cable will not work.
What you need
The built-in Pixel webcam feature is a wired connection. Before opening a call, prepare these items:
- A Pixel phone that offers the Webcam choice in its USB settings.
- A USB cable that supports data, not merely charging. Both connectors must fit the Pixel and the receiving device.
- A receiving device with implemented USB Video Class (UVC) support. Google gives laptops, TVs, cars, and other phones and tablets as examples, but the examples are not an exhaustive compatibility list.
- A video-call application on the receiving device that lets you choose among available cameras.
Google’s Pixel Camera Help documentation does not specify a particular cable model, computer operating system, video-call application, resolution, frame rate, or camera-control set. Those details can vary by the receiving device and application, so treat UVC support and a working data connection as the essential compatibility checks.
Set up the Pixel webcam
- Connect the phone. Plug the Pixel into the computer or other receiving device with a USB cable known to carry data. Make sure each connector is fully seated.
- Open the USB notification. On the Pixel, tap the notification that says Charging this device through USB. If several notifications are present, look for the one describing the USB connection rather than a battery alert.
- Change the USB purpose. Under Use USB for, select Webcam. This changes the phone from an ordinary USB charging connection to a camera connection.
- Preview the feed. Tap the Webcam notification at the top of the Pixel’s screen. Google says this notification provides the phone’s webcam preview and adjustment controls.
- Choose the camera in the call app. Open the video-call application on the receiving device and use its camera selector to choose the Pixel webcam, if it appears. Individual applications use different labels and menus; Google’s help page does not document app-specific paths.
Once the application is using the Pixel feed, position the phone so its camera has the framing you need. A stand or adjustable mount can make that easier, but it is an optional positioning accessory rather than a requirement of the USB webcam feature.

How the USB webcam connection works
The Pixel presents itself as a USB camera
Choosing Webcam tells the Pixel to expose its camera feed over USB. The receiving device then needs UVC support to recognize that feed as a camera. UVC is the compatibility condition Google identifies; it is more useful than assuming that every USB-equipped device or every calling app will work.
The cable must carry data
A cable can fit the phone and still be unsuitable if it is designed only for charging. If the USB notification never offers Webcam, reconnect with a cable whose data capability is known. Google does not require a named brand, speed rating, or model, so verify the cable’s data support and connector fit instead of relying on its appearance.
The call application performs the final selection
The USB connection alone does not guarantee that a call will use the phone. After the Pixel is in webcam mode, the application on the receiving device must select that camera. If an application has no camera selector or does not list the Pixel, its own device compatibility or camera-handling behavior may be the limiting factor. The official instructions establish the USB setup, not a universal menu sequence for every calling service.

Using the Pixel while it is a webcam
Preview and adjustment
The Webcam notification is the control point for previewing and adjusting the feed. Open it from the top of the phone’s screen after selecting webcam mode. This lets you check the image before or during a call without guessing what the receiving device is seeing.
Other phone use is allowed
Google says you can continue using the Pixel normally in webcam mode. You can navigate to other applications, and you can turn off the phone’s screen while the webcam connection remains active. The notification is therefore useful when you need to change something on the phone without abandoning the USB camera mode.
USB charging continues
The phone charges normally over USB during webcam mode. The connection is doing two jobs at once: carrying the camera feed to the receiving device and supplying power to the Pixel.

What happens when another camera use starts
The webcam stream pauses if the Pixel receives a video call or an application on the phone requires camera access. Google says the stream resumes automatically when that other camera use ends. A frozen image during such an event is therefore different from a permanently failed connection: finish or close the competing camera use and allow the webcam stream to resume.

| Question | What the official guidance establishes | What remains device- or app-dependent |
|---|---|---|
| Does the cable work? | It must support data and have connectors that fit both devices. | The source does not name a required cable model or additional specification. |
| Can the receiving device detect the Pixel? | The receiving device needs implemented USB Video Class (UVC) support. | No model-by-model compatibility list is provided. |
| Will a particular calling app use it? | The app must be able to select the Pixel’s USB camera. | Individual app menus and compatibility are not documented by Google’s page. |
| What picture quality should you expect? | The setup instructions do not state resolution or frame rate. | Performance controls and quality can depend on the Pixel, host device, and app. |
| Can a Pixel be the host for another Pixel’s UVC camera? | Google says Pixel devices do not support UVC cameras. | Pixel-to-Pixel webcam use is not currently supported by that limitation. |
Do not infer support merely because a device has a USB port. UVC implementation on the receiving device is the relevant test. Likewise, do not assume that a camera-capable app will automatically switch to the Pixel; use its camera chooser when available.
Troubleshooting the Pixel webcam
The “Webcam” option does not appear
- Disconnect the cable from the receiving device and Pixel.
- Reconnect with a cable explicitly known to support data. A charge-only cable is the most direct cause to eliminate.
- Tap the Pixel notification labeled Charging this device through USB.
- Look again under Use USB for for Webcam.
- Check that the connectors fit both devices and are fully inserted.
If the option is still absent after those checks, the official guidance does not identify a further universal setting or a model-independent fix. The phone model, software state, cable, and receiving device may require separate verification.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The receiving device does not list the Pixel
- Confirm that Webcam is selected on the Pixel, rather than leaving the USB connection in a charging-only mode.
- Open the receiving application’s camera selector and look for the newly connected USB camera.
- Reconnect the phone after selecting webcam mode, then reopen the camera selector.
- Check whether the receiving device implements UVC. Without UVC support, the device may not recognize the Pixel feed as a camera.
There is no official model-by-model list in the cited guidance, so absence from an app’s camera list cannot be resolved by assuming a particular operating system, port type, or calling service is supported.
The image is frozen or disappears during a call
Check whether the Pixel has received a video call or whether another phone application has requested camera access. Google says the webcam stream pauses during that competing use and resumes automatically after it ends. Close or finish the other camera activity, then wait for the webcam feed to resume.
The phone screen is off
Turning off the Pixel’s screen is allowed in webcam mode, according to Google. If the call continues while the display is dark, that is expected behavior rather than proof that the camera has stopped. To inspect the feed or change its settings, wake the phone and tap the Webcam notification.

The phone charges but no camera is available
Charging proves that power is reaching the phone, not that the cable is carrying data or that the phone is in webcam mode. Tap the USB charging notification and explicitly choose Webcam. If that choice is unavailable, replace the cable with a data-capable one and reassess the receiving device’s UVC support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A reliable workflow before an important call
- Verify the cable first. Use a cable you have confirmed can transfer data and whose connectors match both devices.
- Connect before launching the call. This gives the Pixel time to display the USB notification and lets the receiving device enumerate the camera before the meeting begins.
- Select Webcam on the phone. Do not stop at the charging state; open Use USB for and choose Webcam.
- Preview from the Webcam notification. Check framing and make any available adjustment before joining.
- Choose the Pixel in the application. Use the app’s camera selector and confirm that its preview changes to the phone feed.
- Avoid competing camera use on the Pixel. An incoming video call or another app requesting the camera will pause the webcam stream until that use ends.
- Keep the connection physically stable. Place the phone and cable where movement will not pull the connector loose. An optional stand or mount can help maintain a consistent angle.
Pixel-to-Pixel and other phone setups
Google’s current documentation specifically says Pixel devices do not support UVC cameras. Consequently, one Pixel phone cannot currently be used as a USB webcam for another Pixel device. This is a limitation of the receiving Pixel’s camera support, not a reason to conclude that every phone or tablet is incompatible.
Google lists other phones and tablets among examples of receiving devices, alongside laptops, TVs, and cars. Those examples indicate the kinds of hosts the feature is designed to address, but they do not replace checking whether the particular host implements UVC or whether its application can select the camera.

What this feature does not promise
- It does not promise compatibility with every USB-equipped computer, phone, tablet, TV, or car.
- It does not promise that every video-call app exposes a camera selector or accepts the UVC feed.
- It does not specify a universal resolution, frame rate, latency figure, or manual camera-control set.
- It does not require a named cable brand or a particular mount.
- It does not allow a Pixel to act as a UVC-camera host for another Pixel, according to Google’s current documentation.
Keeping these boundaries in mind prevents a common misdiagnosis: a successful USB charge is not the same as a successful webcam connection, and a compatible phone is not automatically compatible with every application.
Quick checklist
- Data-capable USB cable connected at both ends.
- Pixel USB notification opened.
- Webcam selected under Use USB for.
- Receiving device implements UVC.
- Pixel preview checked from the Webcam notification.
- Pixel selected in the video-call application’s camera menu.
- No incoming video call or other phone app currently using the camera.
With those conditions met, the Pixel can provide its camera feed to the receiving device over USB while continuing to charge and, when needed, allowing normal phone use.
