To get your Chromebook online through a Pixel, sign both devices in to the same Google Account, turn on Bluetooth on the Pixel, then select the phone from the Chromebook’s Wi-Fi panel under Your device hotspots. Google calls this integrated connection Instant Tethering or Instant Hotspot. Your Pixel shares its mobile-data connection, so carrier hotspot rules and charges apply, and the phone may use more battery while tethering.

What the Pixel hotspot connection does

Instant Tethering lets a compatible Chromebook use a connected Android phone’s mobile data without requiring you to find and enter a Wi-Fi hotspot password. The Chromebook’s network panel lists the phone under Your device hotspots; choosing it starts sharing the Pixel’s data connection. When the Chromebook shows Connected beneath the phone’s name, the connection is active.

Google’s help also describes this more generally as connecting to your phone’s network, tethering, or using a portable hotspot. These terms refer to sharing the phone’s connection with another device. In this setup, the Pixel is the device with the cellular connection and the Chromebook is the device using it. The Chromebook’s internet activity therefore uses the Pixel’s carrier data allowance and is subject to the carrier’s hotspot terms.

This is a mobile-data connection, not a way to create internet access where the Pixel itself has none. Your phone needs mobile reception and a carrier plan that permits hotspot use. A Wi-Fi connection on the phone is not the source of the shared connection described in Google’s Instant Tethering instructions.

Instant Tethering is useful when you want the Chromebook to connect through a phone that is already associated with it. It is different from selecting an ordinary Wi-Fi network: the Pixel appears in the device-hotspot area of the Chromebook’s network list, rather than being treated as a separate router whose password you have to enter. If the integrated option is unavailable, manually enabling the Pixel’s Wi-Fi hotspot and joining its network is a separate fallback, described below.

Check compatibility and account requirements

Google’s general Chromebook instructions specify ChromeOS 71 or later, Android 8.1 or later, a Chromebook that supports Instant Hotspot, and the same Google Account signed in on both devices. Bluetooth must be on for the phone connection. These are minimum software requirements in Google’s instructions, not a guarantee that every Chromebook model, carrier, or account can use the feature.

  • Chromebook: ChromeOS 71 or later and Instant Hotspot support.
  • Pixel: Android 8.1 or later, Bluetooth enabled, an active SIM or eSIM, and mobile reception.
  • Accounts: The same Google Account must be signed in on the Pixel and Chromebook.
  • Carrier plan: The plan must permit hotspot or tethering use. Some operators restrict Instant Hotspot or charge extra; check your plan’s terms before relying on it.

There are two separate checks here: meeting Google’s device and software requirements, and being allowed to tether under the carrier plan. A Pixel and Chromebook can meet the listed technical requirements while the carrier still limits hotspot access or charges for it. Confirm that hotspot use is enabled on your plan and ask about any applicable allowance, restriction, or fee if you are unsure. There is no single price or data limit that applies to every operator.

The Android 8.1 and ChromeOS 71 thresholds come from Google’s current general Chromebook instructions. Google also has older Pixelbook-specific guidance that describes an Android N-MR1-or-later flow. That is legacy, device-specific information; it should not replace the current general requirements when checking a Chromebook that is not part of that older Pixelbook flow.

For a work- or school-managed Chromebook, an administrator may control whether connected-phone features are available. If the device is managed, check with its administrator if you cannot find the setup option. The option may be controlled by organization policy rather than by a setting you can change yourself.

Connect the Pixel and Chromebook

Pair the devices if they are not set up yet

  1. On the Chromebook, select the time in the lower-right corner, then open Settings.
  2. Open Connected devices. Next to the Android phone entry, select Set up. Depending on the interface, you may instead select the connected phone and open Instant Tethering.
  3. If prompted, enter the Chromebook password and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Complete the confirmation on the Pixel when prompted. Keep the devices near one another during setup and make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the phone.

This initial setup associates the Android phone with the Chromebook so that the integrated connection can be offered later. Follow the prompts on both devices rather than assuming that selecting the phone from a Wi-Fi list completes the first-time setup. The exact wording can vary with the interface, but Google’s general flow starts in the Chromebook’s Connected devices settings and asks you to confirm on the phone.

If the Chromebook asks for its password during setup, enter it to continue. If the expected phone entry or setup option is not present, check the requirements first: confirm that both devices use the same Google Account, that Bluetooth is enabled, and that the Chromebook supports Instant Hotspot. If this is a managed device, the administrator may also need to allow connected-phone features.

Connect after setup

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on the Pixel.
  2. On the Chromebook, open the Wi-Fi or network control from the lower-right corner.
  3. Under Your device hotspots, choose your Pixel.
  4. Wait for Connected to appear under the phone’s name before using the connection.

The Connected label is the useful confirmation that the Chromebook is sharing the Pixel’s mobile-data connection. Simply seeing the phone’s name in the list does not mean the Chromebook is already connected; select it and wait for the status to change.

If the Pixel does not appear, choose Set up your device in the Chromebook network panel, then check the troubleshooting steps below. Keep the devices near one another and confirm Bluetooth is on for both devices. The integrated setup depends on the phone and Chromebook being associated with the same account, so check that as well if setup was never completed or authentication fails.

Manage the connection, battery, and mobile data

To stop tethering, tap Disconnect in the Pixel notification labeled Sharing data connection. This is the direct way Google documents for ending the shared connection from the phone. Disconnect when you no longer need the Chromebook to use the phone’s mobile data, and turn off data connections when you are finished.

Google warns that sharing a phone’s data connection can use more of its battery and advises plugging in the phone during use. A charger is optional, not a requirement for Instant Tethering. If you expect to keep sharing for a longer session, having a compatible charger available can be practical, but check compatibility with your Pixel model; no particular charger is required by the setup instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reviewed Google instructions do not give a universal battery-drain rate, data-use amount, hotspot allowance, or price. How much data the Chromebook uses depends on what you do while connected, while carrier limits and fees depend on the plan and operator. Check your operator’s terms for tethering limits or additional charges rather than relying on a generic estimate. Likewise, there is no guaranteed amount of battery life to expect from a session.

Remember that it is the Chromebook’s use of the connection that draws on the Pixel’s mobile-data plan. If you are deciding whether to leave the connection active, consider whether the Chromebook still needs it and whether your plan has a hotspot allowance or other conditions. When you are done, use the Pixel’s Sharing data connection notification to disconnect instead of assuming the connection has ended.

Fix common Instant Tethering problems

The Pixel is missing from the Chromebook’s hotspot list

  • Move the devices close to one another.
  • Confirm Bluetooth is on for both the Pixel and Chromebook.
  • Open the Chromebook’s network panel and select Set up your device if the phone has not been connected yet.
  • Check that the devices use the same Google Account.

Work through these checks in order: proximity and Bluetooth address the basic connection conditions, while setup and account checks address whether the Chromebook recognizes the Pixel as its connected phone. If the device is organization-managed, the administrator may have disabled connected-phone features, so ask before spending time repeating the setup.

Setup or authentication fails

Verify that both devices are signed in to the same Google Account. Confirm the Pixel has an active SIM or eSIM, mobile reception, and a carrier plan that allows hotspot use. A carrier restriction can prevent tethering even when the Chromebook and phone meet Google’s technical requirements.

It helps to distinguish account authentication from mobile-data eligibility. If the Chromebook cannot complete setup, check the account on both devices. If the phone is recognized but cannot provide a connection, confirm that it has mobile reception and that the carrier plan permits hotspot or tethering. Some operators limit Instant Hotspot or charge extra, so contact the carrier or review the plan terms if eligibility is unclear.

The Chromebook is managed by work or school

Ask the organization’s administrator whether connected-phone features are enabled for the device. Local settings may not be enough to turn the feature on if an administrator has disabled it. This is particularly relevant if the normal Set up or connected-phone option is missing on a Chromebook issued or managed by an organization.

An older Pixelbook will not connect

Google’s older Pixelbook-specific instructions describe a device-specific flow using Android N-MR1 or later. Those instructions also require the phone and Pixelbook to use the same account, a plan with hotspot enabled, and Bluetooth. For trouble with that older flow, Google advises turning the phone’s Bluetooth off and back on, then fully powering the ChromeOS device off and on. For general Chromebook compatibility, use Google’s current Chromebook requirements rather than treating the older Pixelbook guidance as universal.

The Chromebook connected, but the Pixel is no longer needed as a hotspot

On the Pixel, find the notification labeled Sharing data connection and tap Disconnect. This ends the sharing described by Google. Disconnecting is also a useful last step when you want to ensure the Chromebook is no longer using the phone’s mobile data.

Instant Tethering and manual Wi-Fi hotspot are different options

Instant Tethering is the integrated Chromebook-and-Android flow: the phone appears in the Chromebook’s device-hotspot list after setup. A separate option is to enable the Pixel’s Wi-Fi hotspot manually and join that Wi-Fi network from the Chromebook using its network name and password. The available Pixel menu labels and steps can vary by Android version, so use the instructions shown on your device rather than assuming every Pixel has the same settings path. Both approaches share the phone’s mobile-data connection and remain subject to the carrier plan.

The main practical difference is how the Chromebook joins. With Instant Tethering, set up the connected phone and then choose it under Your device hotspots; Google’s documented flow does not ask you to find and type a hotspot password. With manual Wi-Fi hotspot, you turn on the phone’s hotspot and join its Wi-Fi network using the name and password shown for that network. If the integrated feature is unsupported or unavailable, manual hotspot is a distinct route to try, provided your Pixel and carrier plan allow hotspot use.

Do not assume that instructions or menu names for manual hotspot are identical on every Pixel. The exact controls can vary by Android version, and the current general Chromebook help focuses on the integrated device-hotspot flow. Whichever method you use, the Chromebook is sharing the Pixel’s mobile-data connection, so the same carrier limits and possible extra charges apply.

When this connection matters for Phone Hub app streaming

Phone Hub app streaming is a separate feature, not a prerequisite for ordinary hotspot use. Google says the Pixel and Chromebook generally need to be on the same Wi-Fi network for app streaming. If that network does not support streaming, the phone’s hotspot can help; Google notes that Instant Tethering can put the devices on the same local network in an environment that otherwise does not support app streaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an adjacent use case, not an extra step needed just to browse the web on a Chromebook through a Pixel. If your goal is only to share mobile data, follow the Instant Tethering setup and connection steps above. Consider the Phone Hub note only if you are specifically trying to stream phone apps and the existing Wi-Fi network does not support that feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to use a Pixel as a Chromebook hotspot?

Google’s general requirements are ChromeOS 71 or later, Android 8.1 or later, a Chromebook that supports Instant Hotspot, the same Google Account on both devices, and Bluetooth enabled. The Pixel also needs mobile reception, an active SIM or eSIM, and a carrier plan that permits hotspot use.

Does Instant Tethering need a hotspot password?

The integrated Instant Tethering flow lists the Pixel under Your device hotspots on the Chromebook, so you do not need to find and enter a Wi-Fi hotspot password for that documented flow. Manually enabling the Pixel’s Wi-Fi hotspot is a separate option that uses the network name and password for that hotspot.

Will using my Pixel as a Chromebook hotspot cost extra?

It depends on your carrier plan. Some operators limit Instant Hotspot or charge extra for tethering, and Google’s instructions do not specify a universal price or data allowance. Check your plan’s terms or ask your carrier before relying on the connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop sharing the Pixel’s data connection?

Tap Disconnect in the Pixel notification labeled Sharing data connection. Google also advises turning off data connections when you are finished.

Why can’t I see my Pixel under Your device hotspots?

Keep the devices near each other, turn on Bluetooth on both, and confirm that both are signed in to the same Google Account. If the phone has not been set up, choose Set up your device in the Chromebook network panel. A work or school administrator may control whether the feature is available.

Does tethering drain the Pixel battery?

Google warns that sharing the phone’s data connection can use more battery and advises plugging in the phone while sharing. The official instructions do not give a universal battery-drain figure; a charger is useful for longer sessions but is not a setup requirement.

Can I use a Pixel hotspot for Phone Hub app streaming?

Potentially. Google says the phone and Chromebook generally need the same Wi-Fi network for Phone Hub app streaming. If that network does not support streaming, Instant Tethering can put the devices on the same local network. This is separate from ordinary Chromebook internet access through the Pixel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For the integrated connection, set up the Pixel under the Chromebook’s Connected devices settings, keep Bluetooth on, and select the phone under Your device hotspots. Check that the Pixel has mobile reception and that your carrier plan permits tethering; disconnect from the Pixel’s Sharing data connection notification when finished. Google recommends plugging in during use because sharing can use more battery.
