Before a hike, set up emergency contacts and health details, confirm that your phone supports the features where you’ll be, and tell someone your route and return time. In an emergency, use Emergency SOS to contact responders; use location sharing for a planned check-in with a trusted person. They are different tools, and neither guarantees a connection.
Emergency SOS and location sharing do different jobs
Emergency SOS is for contacting emergency responders. On supported phones, a satellite option may provide a way to send an emergency message when ordinary networks are unavailable. Routine location sharing is for telling a trusted person where you are; it does not contact emergency services.
The documented satellite workflows differ by platform. Apple supports both Emergency SOS via satellite and a Find My satellite location update. Google Pixel Satellite SOS is an emergency-services process with an option to notify emergency contacts; the Google guidance cited here does not document a separate routine satellite check-in feature.
Prepare your phone before the hike
- Set up contacts and health details. Add current emergency contacts and complete Medical ID or equivalent health information. Apple recommends doing this before entering an area without cellular or Wi-Fi service. Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite guide.
- Tell someone your plan. Share your route and expected return time with a trusted person. A phone feature is not a substitute for a trip plan.
- Check model, region, software and setup. Apple’s documented satellite features require iPhone 14 or later. Google lists eligible Pixel 9 models and a restricted service region; Pixel Satellite SOS also requires Google Messages as the default messaging app. Service availability and requirements can change. Check the current Apple or Google instructions for your phone and location.
- Verify settings and permissions. On Pixel, open Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS to check the emergency number, contacts and location permission. Assisted calling availability depends on location. On iPhone 14 or later, make sure the phone you’re carrying is the one sharing your location, turn on Share My Location and add intended recipients before you lose coverage.
- Try the demo while you have service. On iPhone, go to Settings > Emergency SOS > Try Demo; Apple says this does not call emergency services. On Pixel, open Settings > Safety & emergency > Satellite SOS to check status and run the demo. Google says activation depends on software/API updates and satellite-network registration. A Pixel demo temporarily disables the mobile network and restores it when you exit. Follow the current Apple and Google directions.
- Plan for power and conditions. Start with a charged phone and account for power needs in your trip plan. Satellite connections require suitable conditions; no general coverage guarantee is stated in the platform guidance.
How to use satellite Emergency SOS on iPhone
- Try calling the local emergency number first. Apple says an emergency call may connect even when your normal carrier network is unavailable.
- If the call does not connect, choose Emergency Text via Satellite and follow the prompts.
- Answer the emergency questions, choose whether to notify emergency contacts and follow the on-screen instructions to point the phone and connect.
- After connection, the phone shares your questionnaire answers, location including elevation, battery level and configured Medical ID/contact information. Keep following the prompts and wait for a responder.
Apple warns that dense foliage and other obstructions can interfere with a satellite connection. You may need an open view of the sky and horizon; use the phone’s orientation cues and allow time for a message to send. Read Apple’s current instructions before relying on the feature.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
If you accidentally start an Emergency SOS via satellite session and do not need help, Apple’s instruction is: “If an Emergency SOS via satellite session has been made and you don’t need emergency services, don’t end the session. Wait until a responder answers, then explain that you don’t need help.”
How to send a non-emergency location update from iPhone
Find My satellite sharing is a check-in, not an emergency call. It must be set up in advance, and the person receiving your update must already be sharing their location with you.

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
- Open Find My > Me.
- Under My Location via Satellite, tap Send My Location.
- Follow the prompts, orient the phone as directed and continue until it confirms the message was sent.
Apple says sending may take minutes, requires an open view of the sky and horizon, and is available once every 15 minutes. While sending your location, you will not see the other person’s location in return. See Apple’s Find My satellite instructions.

- On an eligible Pixel, dial the local emergency number first.
- If neither mobile nor Wi-Fi service is available, choose Satellite SOS > Use Satellite SOS > Start in the dialer.
- Complete the emergency questionnaire and choose whether to notify emergency contacts.
- Position the phone as prompted and remain outside with a clear view of the sky while you wait for the service provider’s reply.
Google says connection and response times vary with location and site conditions. Google Messages must be the default messaging app. Check Google’s Satellite SOS instructions for current eligibility and setup details.

Pixel’s regular Emergency SOS is a separate setting
In Settings > Safety and emergency > Emergency SOS, configure the power-button trigger and choose confirmation by touch-and-hold or automatic action after a five-second countdown. Depending on settings, this feature can call for help, share location with contacts and record video. Google warns that regular Emergency SOS does not work in airplane mode or when Battery Saver is on; that limitation applies to the documented Pixel feature, not all phone platforms. See Google’s Emergency SOS instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a satellite feature may not connect
- Eligibility or activation: The phone model, region, software, app setup or satellite-network registration may not meet the feature’s requirements.
- Blocked sky view: Dense foliage, terrain, buildings or other obstructions can interfere. Move to a safe spot with a clearer view of the sky and follow the phone’s positioning cues.
- Time and site conditions: A satellite message can take minutes, and Google says connection and response times vary. Do not assume an attempted check-in has been delivered until the phone confirms it.
- Wrong workflow: Emergency SOS is for responders; a routine location update is for a trusted person. Do not treat a contact notification as proof that responders have been contacted.
For Apple’s launch announcement, Mark Ghilarducci, identified there as director of the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, called the feature “an important breakthrough that will save lives.” This was a stakeholder statement in Apple’s November 15, 2022 announcement, not independent evidence of service performance: Apple Newsroom, November 15, 2022.
