On an iPhone, open Calculator, turn on Convert from the mode control, choose the source and destination units or currencies, and type a value. The paired result appears while you type, and Swap Units reverses the direction. Android phones vary: Google documents a converter in Google Search, while a Google Pixel Community answer dated August 16, 2025 reports that the stock Pixel Calculator has no converter. Check which app your phone actually provides before assuming the feature is built into Calculator.
What your phone can—and cannot—do
“Phone calculator” can mean two different tools. Apple documents a conversion mode inside the iPhone Calculator app. Google’s instructions describe a converter that you reach through Search by entering a conversion or searching for “Unit converter.” Those instructions are not evidence that every Android Calculator app includes the same feature.
The practical distinction is important when you need a result quickly. An iPhone user can stay in Calculator and switch between categories such as length, weight, and currency. An Android user may need to use Search instead, or may find a manufacturer-specific calculator with its own conversion controls. A Google Pixel Community answer from August 16, 2025 says the stock Pixel Calculator does not have a converter; treat that as Pixel-specific community guidance, not a rule for every Android phone or every future app version.

For currencies, treat the displayed figure as an estimate unless you verify the rate and charges with the bank, card network, exchange service, or merchant involved in the actual transaction. The cited instructions do not identify a data provider, update schedule, offline behavior, or fee treatment.

Convert units or currency in iPhone Calculator
Apple’s current iPhone guide places conversion in the Calculator app’s mode controls. The labels and icon appearance can vary with the iOS version and the calculator’s basic or scientific presentation, but the sequence is the same.
1. Turn on Convert
- Open the Calculator app.
- Use the mode control—the button Apple describes as Change Mode—and turn on Convert. You can do this from basic or scientific mode.
After Convert is enabled, the calculator changes from a single arithmetic display to a pair of fields with a unit or currency selector. If you do not see the mode control, look for the calculator’s mode button rather than assuming your phone lacks conversion; the exact icon can depend on the iOS release.
2. Choose the category and units
- Tap the Unit control.
- Choose a category, such as length, weight, or currency.
- Select the unit or currency you are converting from, then select the one you are converting to.
- If the category row does not show what you need, swipe it to reveal additional categories. Apple’s examples include Speed, Time, and Weight; the guide also says there are other categories, so this excerpt should not be treated as a complete inventory.
For a currency conversion, select the currency that matches the amount you have as the source and the currency in which you want the result as the destination. Choosing the direction correctly prevents a reciprocal result that looks plausible but answers the opposite question.

3. Enter the amount
- Tap the numeric field for the source amount and enter a value.
- Watch the paired field while you type. The converted value appears automatically.
- You can also enter a value in the other field; the corresponding amount updates in the first field.
This two-way entry is useful when you know a target quantity and want to determine the source amount. For example, select a length unit on each side, type the target length in one field, and read the equivalent in the other without manually rearranging a formula.
4. Reverse the direction with Swap Units
Tap Swap Units to exchange the source and destination. The same number now answers the reverse question—for example, destination currency back to the original currency, or feet back to meters. Use this control instead of rebuilding the conversion when you need to check both directions.

5. Return to ordinary arithmetic
When you finish, open the mode control again and switch off Convert or select the calculator mode you want. Conversion fields and arithmetic modes serve different purposes, so confirm which mode is active before starting a new calculation.
Use conversions in Math Notes on iPhone
Apple also documents unit and currency conversion in Math Notes. In a note, write an expression with the units, such as 50 m in feet =. Math Notes can evaluate that expression and show the converted result. This is useful when you want the conversion alongside written calculations, a list, or an explanation rather than in the standalone Calculator screen.

The same qualification applies as in Calculator: Apple’s guide demonstrates the feature but does not provide a complete list of every accepted unit or explain a currency data provider, refresh schedule, offline operation, or fees. If Math Notes does not recognize the wording you entered, use the explicit unit selectors in Calculator or Google Search’s documented converter.
Convert units or currency on Android
Use Google Search when your calculator has no converter
Google Search Help instructs you to enter a conversion directly in the Google Search box or search for Unit converter. Search can handle measurement categories and currencies. This is a Search feature, not proof of a built-in feature in the Calculator app installed on your phone.
- Open the Google Search field in your browser or search app.
- Type the conversion you need, or search for
Unit converter. - Choose the measurement category or currency pair presented by Search.
- Enter the value and verify the source and destination before using the result.
Search is the clearest documented option when the Calculator app has no conversion mode. Because it is an online lookup, availability and the displayed result can depend on connectivity and Google’s current Search interface.

Check the Calculator app supplied with your phone
Android manufacturers and app versions do not all expose the same controls. Open your Calculator and look for a mode, tools, or conversion control. If the app shows only arithmetic functions, do not infer that every Android phone lacks conversion; switch to the documented Search method or consult the help for your specific calculator app.
A Google Pixel Community answer dated August 16, 2025 reports that the stock Pixel Calculator does not have a converter. That report describes Pixel’s stock app at that time; it does not establish behavior for other manufacturers, models, regional editions, or later updates.

Choose based on four questions: where the tool is located, whether it includes the units you need, whether an online lookup is acceptable, and how precise the answer must be. A method that is convenient for checking a recipe quantity may not be sufficient for settling a foreign-currency charge.
How to handle currency conversions safely
Separate an estimate from a transaction amount
A phone conversion result tells you an amount according to the data and calculation used by that service at that time. It does not guarantee what a bank, card issuer, cash exchange desk, payment processor, or merchant will charge. The cited Apple and Google instructions do not state the source of currency data, how frequently rates are refreshed, whether the tool works offline, or whether commissions and other fees are included.
Use the displayed figure for a rough comparison, budgeting, or a quick sense of scale. Before authorizing a payment, exchanging cash, reimbursing someone, or recording an accounting amount, confirm the provider’s quoted rate and every applicable fee.

Check the direction and decimal placement
- Confirm that the first currency is the one you hold or are starting with.
- Confirm that the second currency is the one you want to receive or compare.
- Read the decimal separator and number grouping according to your locale.
- Use Swap Units on iPhone, or reverse the source and destination in Search, to perform a sanity check.
Do not assume offline or real-time behavior
Neither Apple’s cited Calculator guide nor Google’s cited Search instructions promise a particular offline mode or a real-time exchange rate. If you are traveling without connectivity, check whether the result is still available and treat any cached or previously displayed figure as provisional. For a live transaction, use the rate and fee information supplied by the provider at the point of sale.

Length
On iPhone, select the length category, choose the starting and destination units, and enter the known measurement. The paired field updates while you type. If you are unsure which side is the source, enter the value in the field representing what you already know, then use Swap Units to verify the reverse relationship.
Weight
Select the weight category and follow the same source, destination, and entry sequence. Apple specifically names Weight among the categories shown by swiping the category row. Avoid labeling a result with a different physical quantity; weight and mass are not interchangeable labels in every technical context, so use the unit names the app displays.
Speed and time
Apple’s guide gives Speed and Time as examples of additional categories revealed by swiping the category row. Select the category before choosing units: a time conversion and a speed conversion answer different questions even when both use familiar words such as “hour.”
Currency
Select Currency, choose the two currencies, and enter the amount in either field. Then apply the rate and fee cautions in the previous section before relying on the figure for a purchase or transfer.

Troubleshooting when conversion is missing or looks wrong
There is no Convert option on iPhone
- Open Calculator rather than a third-party arithmetic app.
- Look for the mode control Apple calls Change Mode; the icon can look different across iOS versions.
- Check both basic and scientific presentations, where Apple says Convert can be enabled.
- If you are in Math Notes, try the explicit Calculator Convert controls instead.
Your Android Calculator shows only arithmetic
- Check the app’s mode or tools controls for a converter.
- If none exists, use Google Search and enter the conversion or search for
Unit converter. - For a Pixel phone, remember that the August 16, 2025 Pixel Community answer reports no converter in the stock Pixel Calculator; use Search rather than repeatedly looking for a hidden button.
- Do not generalize the Pixel report to another manufacturer or model.
The result is the inverse of what you expected
The most common cause is reversed source and destination selections. Re-read both labels, enter the known value in its matching field, and use Swap Units on iPhone or reverse the pair in Search. A reciprocal value can look reasonable, so checking the direction is essential.
The currency figure differs from a provider’s quote
Compare the provider’s rate, timestamp, spread, commission, and other fees with the calculator result. The phone instructions do not establish that the on-screen figure includes any of those transaction costs. Use the provider’s final quote for the payment or exchange.
The needed unit does not appear
On iPhone, swipe the category row to reveal more categories and verify that you selected the correct category first. Apple’s guide does not publish a complete inventory in the cited excerpt, so an absent unit is not evidence that every version supports it. On Android, try Google Search’s converter or the documentation for your particular Calculator app.

- Define the question: write down the value, source unit or currency, and destination unit or currency before opening the tool.
- Pick the right location: use iPhone Calculator Convert when available; otherwise check your Android Calculator and then use Google Search’s converter.
- Set both sides explicitly: verify the category, source, and destination labels before entering numbers.
- Enter the value: type in the field representing the amount you know. On iPhone, either field can be used.
- Check the direction: reverse the conversion and confirm that the relationship makes sense.
- Record qualifications: for currency, note that the result is an estimate unless the transaction provider confirms the rate and fees.
- Keep the result with its unit: copy or write the unit and currency symbol alongside the number so it cannot be mistaken for the original amount.
This workflow prevents the two errors a calculator cannot detect for you: selecting the wrong direction and applying an estimate as though it were a guaranteed settlement amount.
