You can turn an iPhone or Android phone into a handheld PC gaming device with a game-streaming app and a controller. The game still runs on your Windows PC; the phone displays the video and audio stream while sending your button presses, sticks and touch input back to the computer. For a Steam library, Steam Link is the simplest starting point. Moonlight paired with a compatible host such as Sunshine gives you a more configurable alternative.

Begin with the phone and gaming PC on the same home network. Once a game launches reliably there, you can investigate playing away from home. A physical controller is optional, but a USB-C or Bluetooth gamepad makes the phone feel much more like a dedicated handheld.

What your phone is—and is not—doing

Phone-based PC gaming in this setup is remote play, not local installation of the PC game. Your computer performs the rendering, game logic and storage work. A streaming application captures the PC’s output, encodes it and sends it over the network. The phone decodes that stream, shows it on screen and returns your controls to the PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction explains the requirements. The computer must be switched on, signed in and able to run the game. The phone needs a compatible streaming client, a network path to the computer and enough battery for a video stream. The quality you perceive depends on both the gaming PC and the network between the two devices; changing phones alone cannot make an underpowered PC run a demanding title.

Choose a streaming route

Approach Best fit Host requirement Controller and platform notes Where it works
Steam Link Someone whose games are already in a Steam library and who wants the shortest setup. Steam installed and running on the gaming PC. Use the controls offered by the app, a compatible Bluetooth/USB gamepad or a phone-mounted controller. Exact phone and controller support can change, so check the current store listing. Start on the same home network; remote access depends on your network and current app capabilities.
Moonlight with Sunshine Someone who wants a configurable client/host arrangement or a library that is not limited to Steam. A supported host configured on the gaming PC; Sunshine is the current host path described in Moonlight’s setup guidance. Moonlight documents standard Android-mapped gamepads, common Xbox and PlayStation controllers, and MFi controllers. It specifically lists Xbox One S and PS4 Bluetooth controllers for iOS/tvOS 13 or later. Pair and test locally first. Internet play requires a workable route through your home network and may require port-forwarding or another network configuration.
Console remote play Someone who actually owns the relevant PlayStation or Xbox console. The corresponding console, rather than a gaming PC. Use the console’s supported mobile remote-play app and controller arrangement. Remote play is tied to that console; it is not PC streaming.
Cloud gaming Someone who wants to stream without leaving a gaming PC or console running. No personal gaming PC is required, but the service’s current subscription and regional eligibility apply. Backbone’s support material says Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream directly to a phone with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription; launching it from the Backbone App requires Backbone+. Availability, catalog, plan terms and regions can change.

Steam Link and Moonlight are the two relevant choices when the goal is specifically to use your own PC. Console remote play and cloud gaming solve a different problem and should not be presented as interchangeable.

What you need before starting

  • A gaming PC that has the games installed and can run them normally.
  • An iPhone or Android phone with enough free storage for the streaming app and adequate battery charge.
  • A home network that can connect both devices. A wired connection from the PC to the router and a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connection for the phone are Moonlight’s recommendations.
  • Steam for the Steam Link route, or a supported host configured for Moonlight.
  • Optional input hardware: a Bluetooth/USB gamepad or a telescopic controller that fits your phone and leaves its case clearance and connector accessible.

Do not buy a new router automatically. First test your existing network with the PC wired to the router if possible and the phone close enough to receive a strong 5 GHz signal. Upgrade hardware only if that network is the part that consistently limits play.

Set up Steam Link

Steam Link is the accessible first choice for a Steam library. Valve’s Android documentation states that the app supports Android 5.0 and newer. Valve also maintains a separate Apple Steam Link support path; verify the current App Store listing and iOS requirement for the exact iPhone before installing.

  1. Prepare the PC. Install Steam on the gaming computer, sign in to the account containing the games and leave Steam running.
  2. Install the phone app. Get Steam Link from the current Google Play or Apple App Store listing. Confirm the listed operating-system requirement matches your phone.
  3. Join the same network. Connect the phone and PC to the same home router. If the PC has both Wi-Fi and Ethernet available, use Ethernet for the PC and Wi-Fi for the phone.
  4. Start pairing. Open Steam Link and follow its host-discovery and pairing flow. The app should show the nearby Steam computer; select it and complete the confirmation code or PIN it displays.
  5. Run the connection test. Let Steam Link check the link before launching a game. A successful pairing only proves that the devices can communicate; the test and an actual game reveal whether your network is comfortable for play.
  6. Launch a game. Use Steam Link’s library view to select an installed title. Keep Steam open on the PC while you play.
  7. Add physical controls if desired. Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, connect a USB controller with the appropriate adapter, or attach a phone-mounted controller. Test every stick, trigger and menu button in the Steam Link session.

If the phone cannot see the computer, check that both devices are on the same router rather than one being on a guest network, confirm Steam is running and repeat the app’s pairing flow. Do not move to internet play until a local game works.

Set up Moonlight with Sunshine

Moonlight is a client. It needs a compatible host on the gaming PC; current Moonlight guidance describes Sunshine as the host route. This combination is useful when you want to expose individual games or applications and tune more of the streaming setup than a basic Steam-library workflow allows.

  1. Install the client. Install Moonlight from the current app store for Android or iPhone.
  2. Configure the host. Install and configure a supported host on the gaming PC, following Sunshine’s current instructions. Make sure the PC can start the game locally before troubleshooting streaming.
  3. Pair locally first. Put the phone and PC on the same home network and open Moonlight. Select the discovered computer. Moonlight displays a PIN; enter that PIN on the host PC to authorize the client.
  4. Add or select an application. Use the host’s available game or application entries. Start with one title you know works rather than adding a long list while diagnosing the connection.
  5. Test the session. Launch the game from Moonlight, verify picture and sound, then press every controller input. Moonlight’s guide recommends completing this home-network test before attempting internet play.
  6. Only then configure remote access. Sunshine offers a UPnP option for automatic port forwarding. If your router, carrier-grade NAT, workplace network or public Wi-Fi prevents that route, another supported network arrangement may be required; some networks will not permit a reliable inbound connection.

Moonlight’s internet-play instructions are network-dependent, not a guarantee that every home or public network will work. Treat local pairing as a required diagnostic stage, especially on iOS/tvOS, where Moonlight says same-network pairing is required under Apple’s guidelines.

Choose and connect a controller

Touch controls can be sufficient for menus, turn-based games or a quick test, but action games usually feel better with physical controls. A phone-mounted controller clamps around the handset and provides sticks, triggers and face buttons in a handheld layout. A separate Bluetooth or USB gamepad works as well if you have a stand or a comfortable way to hold the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check fit before buying a telescopic controller

  • Match the controller’s connector to the phone: USB-C models require a USB-C phone, while an iPhone with a different connector needs a compatible alternative.
  • Check whether the controller’s bridge clears your phone case, camera bump and charging port.
  • Confirm the controller’s current operating-system support and whether the game-streaming app recognizes its input mapping.
  • For a USB-C model such as Backbone One USB-C, verify the exact phone model and case clearance rather than assuming every USB-C handset fits.

Bluetooth compatibility and latency

Moonlight documents standard Android-mapped gamepads and support for common Xbox and PlayStation controllers. For iOS/tvOS 13 or later, its guide lists Xbox One S and PS4 Bluetooth controllers and MFi controllers. Those lists do not make every phone/controller pairing identical: Moonlight recommends testing the particular Android device and controller combination because some Bluetooth pairings can introduce latency or disconnects.

  1. Pair the controller with the phone in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, or connect the USB controller with the correct adapter.
  2. Open Steam Link or Moonlight only after the operating system reports the controller as connected.
  3. In the streaming session, test both analog sticks, shoulder buttons, triggers, the directional pad and the system/menu button.
  4. If inputs drop out, reconnect the controller locally, move closer to the phone, remove competing Bluetooth connections and test again before blaming the game or host PC.

Make the network suitable for streaming

Streaming sends a continuous video and audio feed while your controls travel in the opposite direction. A strong signal is more useful than a theoretical top speed. Moonlight recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for the client and Ethernet from the PC server to the router where possible. These are recommendations, not promises of a particular latency, frame rate or image quality.

Improve a local session

  • Wire the gaming PC to the router instead of relying on its Wi-Fi radio.
  • Use the 5 GHz band on the phone and play within a strong coverage area.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud backups and video streams on the same network while testing.
  • Move the phone closer to the access point if the picture stutters or controls feel delayed.
  • Change one variable at a time so you can identify whether the host, phone signal or another device is responsible.

Attempt play away from home

Remote play over the internet adds variables that do not exist on your living-room network: the upload path from your home, the phone’s current connection, router policies and any carrier or public-network restrictions. Moonlight describes Sunshine’s UPnP option for automatic port forwarding, but UPnP may be unavailable or disabled on your router. If the phone cannot connect from outside, verify the host is reachable, check the router’s configuration and determine whether your internet provider uses a network arrangement that prevents incoming connections. There is no universal setting that makes every public network support PC streaming.

Run games comfortably on a phone

Start with a known-good title

Use a game that already runs correctly on the PC and has straightforward controller support. This separates a streaming problem from a game-installation or launcher problem. Once that title is stable, add other games and applications one at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the phone as a display, not the main PC screen

Keep the PC’s display available during setup so you can read pairing PINs, approve a host connection and observe whether the game itself has launched. After the session is reliable, you can leave the PC unattended, but it still needs to remain powered and ready to run Steam or the host software.

Manage heat, battery and ergonomics

A long video stream can warm the phone and consume battery more quickly than ordinary browsing. Use a stable grip, keep the phone’s vents and connector clear, and connect power only with a cable that does not interfere with the controller. A clamp-style controller reduces the need to balance a separate phone and gamepad, while a standalone gamepad may be more comfortable for longer sessions.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely check Action
The PC does not appear during setup. The devices are on different networks, Steam/host software is closed, or discovery is blocked. Put both devices on the same non-guest network, start Steam or Sunshine, then repeat discovery and pairing.
Pairing succeeds but the game will not launch. The title is not installed, the launcher needs attention, or the host cannot run it normally. Launch the game directly on the PC first, close conflicting launchers, then add or select the working application again.
Video stutters or becomes blurry. Weak 5 GHz signal, a busy network or a Wi-Fi-connected host PC. Move closer to the router, stop competing traffic and wire the PC to the router. A new router is not automatically required.
Controls feel delayed. Network delay or a problematic Bluetooth pairing. Test locally, use the recommended 5 GHz/client and Ethernet/host arrangement, then test the controller by USB or another supported pairing.
The controller disconnects. Device-specific Bluetooth behavior, low battery or a poor physical connection. Reconnect it in the phone’s settings, charge it, remove other Bluetooth devices and verify that your exact phone/controller combination is supported.
Local play works but internet play fails. Router forwarding, carrier-grade NAT or restrictions on the remote network. Review Sunshine’s UPnP and other network options, confirm the host’s home upload path and test from a different permitted network. Some networks cannot accept the connection.

PC streaming versus console remote play and cloud gaming

The words “remote play” cover different systems. With Steam Link or Moonlight, your own PC is the host and your existing PC game installation is used. PlayStation or Xbox remote play requires the corresponding console. Cloud gaming streams from the provider’s hardware and can work without a personal PC or console, but it introduces a separate subscription, catalog and regional-availability decision. Backbone’s support information identifies Xbox Cloud Gaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate as an example and notes that starting it from the Backbone App requires Backbone+; verify current terms before relying on those requirements.

If your priority is using a Steam library you already own, try Steam Link first. If you need a configurable host and broader application selection, use Moonlight with Sunshine. If you do not want to leave a PC or console running, investigate a current cloud service instead of treating it as a setting inside Steam Link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable first-session checklist

  1. Confirm the game runs on the PC without streaming.
  2. Install Steam Link, or install Moonlight and configure Sunshine.
  3. Connect phone and PC to the same home network.
  4. Pair the client and host and complete one local game test.
  5. Connect and test the physical controller, if you are using one.
  6. Wire the PC to the router and use strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone if the session is unstable.
  7. Only after local play works, investigate internet access and router configuration.
  8. Check current app, operating-system, controller and subscription details whenever you change phones or services.

The Bottom Line

For most people, the practical path is Steam Link on a phone paired with Steam on a nearby PC, plus a compatible physical controller. Moonlight with Sunshine is the configurable alternative. Prove the setup on your home network first, then improve the PC’s wired connection and the phone’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi before attempting remote play from elsewhere.
