Use WordPress for editing and content storage, then let SvelteKit deliver the public website. WordPress exposes posts, pages, media, taxonomies, and custom post types through its REST API or, with the WPGraphQL plugin installed, through GraphQL. SvelteKit fetches that data in server-side load functions, maps WordPress slugs to its own routes, and renders the result with SSR, prerendering, or client-side rendering according to each page’s needs.
A practical starting point is REST for a straightforward blog or brochure site. Choose WPGraphQL when pages need many related entities, a precisely selected field set, connection-based pagination, or a typed schema contract. Keep credentials and preview requests on server-only paths, and select the SvelteKit adapter and caching strategy for the host you will actually run.

In a headless installation, WordPress is the editorial backend rather than the system that renders the public theme. Editors sign in to WordPress to write posts, create pages, upload media, assign categories, and manage custom content. SvelteKit is a separate application responsible for URL routing, templates, rendering, browser navigation, and the final HTML sent to visitors.
The two applications communicate over an API:
- WordPress: stores content and exposes it as JSON through the built-in REST API, or as a GraphQL schema through WPGraphQL.
- SvelteKit: requests only the content needed by a route, transforms it into view data, and renders Svelte components.
- The browser: receives server-rendered HTML for the initial visit and can then use SvelteKit’s client-side navigation without reloading the entire document.
This separation lets a team keep WordPress’s familiar editorial workflow while building the public experience with Svelte components. It also means that a broken API request, an incorrect slug mapping, an expired credential, or an incompatible deployment adapter can stop content from appearing even when WordPress itself is working.

REST API or WPGraphQL?
Both interfaces can power the same SvelteKit site. REST is part of WordPress core and uses predictable, resource-oriented URLs with HTTP response codes. WPGraphQL is an optional free, open-source plugin that exposes an extendable GraphQL schema, introspection, and Relay-style connection pagination.
| Decision factor | WordPress REST API | WPGraphQL |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Available in WordPress core | Requires the WPGraphQL plugin |
| Request style | Resource URLs such as /wp-json/wp/v2/posts, /wp-json/wp/v2/pages, and /wp-json/wp/v2/media |
POST a query to the WordPress /graphql endpoint |
| Fields returned | Endpoint-shaped responses; the frontend can select supported response options | The query explicitly selects the fields it needs |
| Relationships | Often require additional requests or embedded response options | Designed to traverse related entities in one query when the schema exposes those relationships |
| Pagination | Page-oriented parameters such as page and per_page |
Connection pagination using arguments such as first and after, with cursors preserved between requests |
| Schema contract | Familiar endpoint behavior with capabilities discoverable from the API index and OPTIONS requests | Typed, introspectable schema that can be examined by GraphQL tooling |
| Best initial fit | Small dependency footprint and a conventional blog or brochure site | Broad content models, relationship-heavy pages, and teams that want typed queries |
Start with REST when the site mainly needs posts, pages, media, and taxonomies and the team is comfortable with WordPress’s standard endpoints. Move to WPGraphQL when a route needs data from several connected types, when over-fetching is a recurring problem, or when a shared schema contract is valuable. This is an architectural choice, not a performance guarantee; measure the API and rendering behavior of your own content model.

You need a working WordPress installation with the content types and fields the site will publish, a SvelteKit project, and a deployment environment that can run the adapter selected for that project. Decide the canonical WordPress origin before writing fetch code, including whether it includes a path such as https://cms.example.com. The public SvelteKit origin can be different.
Keep the backend origin in a server-only environment variable. With SvelteKit’s dynamic private environment module, a typical server route imports it as follows:
import { env } from '$env/dynamic/private';
Do not place API passwords, bearer tokens, or preview credentials in a public environment module or in values that are bundled into browser JavaScript. Public content can normally be requested anonymously, but private, password-protected, or otherwise protected WordPress data requires authentication or explicit exposure.
Build a REST-powered SvelteKit site
1. Create a small API boundary
Centralize URL construction and response normalization instead of scattering WordPress-specific details through every component. A small module can add the REST base path, encode route parameters, and return a consistent object to SvelteKit pages. Keep authentication in this server-side layer if any endpoint is protected.

import { env } from '$env/dynamic/private';
export function wordpressUrl(path: string) {
return `${env.WORDPRESS_URL}/wp-json/wp/v2/${path}`;
}
Validate the configured origin at startup or when the first request arrives. A missing origin should produce a clear configuration error rather than a request to an accidental relative URL.
2. Fetch a single post by slug
A route such as src/routes/blog/[slug]/+page.server.ts is a natural place for server-side post loading. The following pattern asks WordPress for a slug match and embeds related data supported by the endpoint:
import { error } from '@sveltejs/kit';
import { env } from '$env/dynamic/private';
export async function load({ params, fetch }) {
const endpoint = `${env.WORDPRESS_URL}/wp-json/wp/v2/posts?slug=${encodeURIComponent(params.slug)}&_embed`;
const response = await fetch(endpoint);
if (!response.ok) {
throw error(response.status, 'WordPress request failed');
}
const posts = await response.json();
if (!posts.length) {
throw error(404, 'Post not found');
}
return { post: posts[0] };
}
The fetch supplied by SvelteKit participates in server rendering and follows SvelteKit’s request handling. Throwing a SvelteKit error gives the route an appropriate status instead of rendering an empty article. Keep the lookup tied to the route parameter so that a missing or changed slug cannot silently display a different post.
3. Map WordPress fields to a view model
WordPress REST responses commonly contain nested values such as a rendered title, rendered excerpt, rendered content, and media references. Components should not need to know every API detail. Convert the response to the fields the page actually needs:

content: posts[0].content?.rendered ?? '',
slug: posts[0].slug,
date: posts[0].date,
featuredMedia: posts[0]._embedded?.['wp:featuredmedia']?.[0] ?? null
}
};
The exact shape depends on the WordPress version, enabled fields, and whether _embed is used. Treat absent optional fields as a normal case. If your project uses custom post types or custom fields, confirm that those fields are exposed by the REST controller before relying on them.
4. Render content safely
WordPress’s rendered content is HTML. Svelte can insert it with {@html post.content}, but only after the project has decided how that HTML is trusted, sanitized, transformed, and styled. A public WordPress installation may contain embeds, shortcodes, inline styles, or markup that your frontend does not support. Sanitize untrusted input on the server or transform it into an allow-listed representation before inserting it into the DOM.

5. Build archives and pagination
Collection endpoints return a limited number of items by default. Use REST pagination parameters for archive, category, tag, and search pages, and expose the current page in the SvelteKit route or query string. A collection loader should validate that the requested page is a positive integer, request the matching page, and return both the items and the navigation information your component needs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
export async function load({ url, fetch }) {
const page = Math.max(1, Number(url.searchParams.get('page') ?? '1'));
const endpoint = `${env.WORDPRESS_URL}/wp-json/wp/v2/posts?page=${page}&per_page=12`;
const response = await fetch(endpoint);
if (!response.ok) {
throw error(response.status, 'WordPress archive request failed');
}
return { posts: await response.json(), page };
}
Do not assume that a page beyond the available range is an empty archive unless that is your intended UX. Return a not-found response or redirect to a valid page when appropriate. For categories and custom post types, use the corresponding REST route and make sure the WordPress type is publicly queryable.
Use WPGraphQL for precise, related queries
After installing and configuring WPGraphQL, SvelteKit can send a single query containing the fields required by a route. A minimal slug query looks like this:
const query = `
query PostBySlug($slug: ID!) {
posts(where: { name: $slug }) {
nodes { title content excerpt uri }
}
}
`;
const response = await fetch(`${WORDPRESS_URL}/graphql`, {
method: 'POST',
headers: { 'content-type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify({ query, variables: { slug } })
});
Adapt field names and filters to the schema installed on the site. A custom post type, custom field group, or renamed connection may not use the example’s names. Check the schema with GraphQL introspection or the tooling supplied by the installation before shipping a query.
For archives, request a connection with first and after. Return the nodes and the page information, then preserve the returned cursor for the next request. Cursor pagination is different from REST’s page-number model, so do not mix the two approaches in a shared pagination component without defining a common interface.

Always check both the HTTP response and the GraphQL response’s errors field. A GraphQL server can return an HTTP-success response that contains query errors. Normalize those failures into a SvelteKit error or a deliberate partial-data state.
Choose SSR, prerendering, or CSR per route
SvelteKit applications are server-rendered by default and can transition to client-side navigation. You can also prerender routes that are safe to build ahead of time. The right mode depends on freshness, SEO, build cost, runtime availability, and interactivity.
| Mode | Use it when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| SSR | Content changes frequently, pages must reflect current WordPress data, or SEO-sensitive HTML must be generated at request time | Requires a running server or server-capable host and incurs request-time API work |
| Prerendering | Content can be rebuilt at deploy time and the route benefits from static delivery | A publication requires a rebuild or revalidation process before changes appear |
| CSR | A highly interactive area does not need its initial data in server HTML | Initial SEO and first-render behavior can suffer if essential content waits for browser JavaScript |
A common arrangement is SSR for article pages and previews, prerendering for stable legal or marketing pages, and CSR for authenticated dashboards or widgets. Keep the decision route-specific rather than forcing the entire application into one mode.
Implement previews without exposing credentials
Public posts can usually be fetched anonymously, but editorial previews are different. Preview data may contain drafts, private fields, or an unpublished autosave, so the request must be authenticated and must not be cached as public content.
WPGraphQL preview flow
- Start the preview from an authenticated editorial request.
- Send the
X-GraphQL-Previewrequest header to WordPress. - Use credentials belonging to an identity that can edit the post being previewed.
- Query the post through WPGraphQL and render the newest autosave overlay returned for that identity.
- Mark the SvelteKit preview response private and bypass shared caches.
WPGraphQL documents Cache-Control: no-store, private and Vary: X-GraphQL-Preview for preview requests. Preserve that behavior through any reverse proxy or hosting cache. A preview URL that can be replayed without authentication is a data-leak risk, even if the page is difficult to guess.
Protect server-only secrets
- Store application passwords, bearer tokens, and preview credentials in private server environment variables.
- Read them only in
+page.server.ts, server hooks, or another server-only module. - Never return a credential as part of a SvelteKit load object that is serialized to the browser.
- Separate preview cookies or tokens from normal public navigation and expire them deliberately.
- Log status codes and request identifiers, not authorization headers or token values.
REST previews may require an authenticated WordPress request as well, but the exact endpoint and authentication flow depend on the installed preview solution. Do not assume that a public REST post response represents a draft.

Deploy SvelteKit alongside WordPress
WordPress and SvelteKit can run on different origins and even different hosting platforms. The SvelteKit deployment must be able to reach the WordPress origin over HTTPS, and any reverse proxy must permit the API methods and headers the application uses.
Select the adapter for the host
Use the adapter required by the target platform. A Node deployment generally uses SvelteKit’s Node adapter and starts a server process; a platform-specific adapter may integrate with that provider’s functions or edge runtime. The exact environment-variable module and adapter configuration should follow the SvelteKit version used by the project.
WP Engine’s SvelteKit guidance identifies the Node adapter as the best choice for its platform, expects a repository-based deployment flow, and recommends WPGraphQL Smart Cache for SvelteKit applications. Treat those as platform-specific instructions: verify the current host’s supported adapter, build command, start command, Node version, environment-variable setup, and cache behavior before deployment.
Deployment checklist
- Set the production WordPress origin and any private credentials in the host’s environment configuration.
- Run the SvelteKit build with the same adapter and Node version used in production.
- Confirm that server-only modules are not imported by browser code.
- Test a post, page, media asset, archive, taxonomy route, and a missing slug against the production API.
- Verify that the deployment process can reach WordPress and that WordPress allows the required cross-origin requests.
- Configure cache rules so public responses can be cached while preview and authenticated responses remain private.
- Exercise a real editorial update and confirm the chosen SSR, rebuild, or invalidation process makes it visible when expected.
Cross-origin requests, caching, and freshness
The WordPress REST API supports cross-origin requests and exposes endpoint capabilities through the API index and OPTIONS requests. Even so, a server-side SvelteKit fetch is usually simpler for public pages because it keeps the WordPress origin out of browser code, avoids exposing credentials, and allows the server to normalize failures.
Decide where caching occurs: at SvelteKit, a reverse proxy, a WordPress cache, or a host-provided layer. Cache keys must include the route and relevant query parameters. Never let a private preview response share a cache entry with a public article. For rapidly changing content, SSR with a short, controlled cache can be preferable to a full rebuild; for stable content, prerendering reduces request-time work.
When adding a cache, test invalidation rather than assuming it. Publish a harmless edit, request the page through the public domain, inspect response headers, and verify that the updated title or excerpt appears according to the documented freshness window.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshoot the failures that appear most often
The page returns a 404 even though WordPress shows the post
- Confirm that the SvelteKit parameter is the WordPress slug, not the numeric post ID or a full URI.
- URL-encode the slug before adding it to a REST query.
- Check that the post is published and publicly queryable.
- For WPGraphQL, verify the filter and post-type connection names against the installed schema.
The API returns 401 or 403
- Check that the credential is present in the server environment and has not been exposed under a public variable.
- Confirm that the authenticated identity has permission to read the requested private content or edit the previewed post.
- Inspect proxy rules that may remove the Authorization header.
- Do not “fix” a permission error by making private WordPress data public.
The response is successful but content is missing
- Inspect the normalized object, not only the HTTP status.
- For GraphQL, read the response’s
errorsarray. - Check whether a custom field or media relationship is actually exposed by the REST controller or GraphQL schema.
- Handle optional media, excerpt, and taxonomy values without assuming every post has them.
Preview shows an old or public version
- Ensure the preview request includes
X-GraphQL-Previewwhen using WPGraphQL. - Use an identity that can edit the post so the newest autosave can be overlaid.
- Send and preserve
no-store, privatebehavior and theVary: X-GraphQL-Previewresponse variation. - Inspect every cache between the editor and SvelteKit.
Builds work locally but fail in production
- Check the adapter, Node version, build command, and start command required by the host.
- Confirm that production environment variables exist at runtime, not only during local development.
- Ensure the production network can resolve and reach the WordPress origin over HTTPS.
- Review server logs for an incorrect origin, blocked request, or route that was accidentally prerendered.
A maintainable content contract
Document the fields each route consumes, the WordPress post types that provide them, and whether each field is public, optional, or preview-only. Keep API calls in a small number of modules, normalize data before it reaches components, and give every route an explicit loading and error behavior.
Use stable slugs or URIs as the public identity of content, but plan for redirects when editors change them. Treat media URLs, embed markup, and rich text as external input. Add tests for a normal post, a post without an image, a missing slug, a protected post, a paginated archive, and a preview response. This contract makes changing from REST to WPGraphQL—or changing deployment hosts—an isolated integration task instead of a rewrite of the presentation layer.
Recommended starting architecture
For a new blog, create server-side SvelteKit load functions backed by the WordPress REST API, return a normalized post object, and use SSR for article routes. Add pagination to archive routes and sanitize rendered HTML before insertion. When the content model grows to include related authors, products, events, or nested navigation, evaluate WPGraphQL and move only the relationship-heavy queries first. Keep previews authenticated and uncached, and verify the adapter and cache rules on the production host before launch.
