Match the earbud connector to the device port: plug 3.5 mm earbuds into a headphone jack, USB-C earbuds into a compatible USB-C port, and Lightning earbuds into a Lightning iPhone or iPad. If the device has no headphone jack, use the correct USB-C-to-3.5 mm or Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter. The port shape alone is not enough for USB-C audio; the phone or computer and the adapter must support the required audio mode.

Before buying anything, identify both the plug on your earbuds and the port on the host device. Then verify microphone and inline-control support if calls, volume buttons, or playback controls matter.

Identify your earbud connector first

Wired earbuds use one of three connectors. The connector determines whether you can plug in directly or need an adapter.

3.5 mm plug

A 3.5 mm plug is the familiar round headphone connector. Insert it into a matching headphone jack. Apple says its 3.5 mm EarPods work with Apple products and other products that have a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack: Apple’s wired-headphone guide.

Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter | 1 USB Port, Music, Podcasts, Travel
  • The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
  • Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.

Some laptops have one combined headset jack, while older or specialized computers may have separate headphone and microphone sockets. A four-contact headset plug generally carries stereo audio and microphone signals, but the computer must support that arrangement. Check the symbols beside the ports or the laptop manual before assuming that a microphone will work.

USB-C plug

USB-C earbuds have a reversible oval connector. They can connect directly to a USB-C phone or laptop only when that host supports USB audio in the mode the earbuds require. A USB-C-shaped port does not by itself guarantee audio compatibility.

USB-C headphones may contain their own digital audio electronics. Other setups use a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter that converts digital audio from the host into an analog signal for conventional earbuds. Digital USB audio and analog 3.5 mm audio are different connection types; do not assume that every USB-C adapter or USB-C port supports both. A support explanation from Bose describes this distinction: USB-C digital audio versus analog 3.5 mm audio.

Lightning plug

Lightning EarPods use Apple’s Lightning connector and are intended for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with a Lightning port and iOS 10 or later. If you are reusing ordinary 3.5 mm earbuds with a Lightning iPhone, use Apple’s Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter and the same iOS 10-or-later requirement described in Apple’s support instructions.

How to use wired earbuds with an iPhone

First, check whether the iPhone has Lightning or USB-C

Look at the phone’s charging port. A Lightning iPhone needs Lightning earbuds or a Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter. A USB-C iPhone needs USB-C earbuds or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter for conventional earbuds. The connector and adapter must match the phone’s port; a Lightning accessory will not fit a USB-C iPhone, and vice versa.

Connect USB-C earbuds to a USB-C iPhone

  1. Unlock the iPhone and stop any audio that you do not want to interrupt.
  2. Insert the USB-C earbud plug into the iPhone’s USB-C port.
  3. Start music, a podcast, or a video.
  4. Confirm that sound is coming from the earbuds rather than the phone speaker. If the earbuds include a microphone, make a short recording or test call to verify its input.

Apple identifies USB-C EarPods as requiring a device with a USB-C connector. USB-C earbuds from other manufacturers still require host support for USB audio and may expose different microphone or button functions.

Connect 3.5 mm earbuds to a USB-C iPhone

  1. Plug a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm headphone adapter into the iPhone’s USB-C port.
  2. Insert the earbuds’ 3.5 mm plug into the adapter’s headphone socket.
  3. Play audio and check the output. If the phone continues using its speaker, open the audio-output picker in the app or Control Center and select the wired device when it appears.
  4. Test the inline microphone and buttons separately; audio playback can work even when a control or microphone is not supported.

Apple’s USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter page describes the adapter’s purpose and lists compatible iPhone and Mac models. The US Apple store showed a price of $9.00 when accessed in 2026; that is a volatile listing price, not a universal market price: Apple’s USB-C adapter listing. Check the live compatibility list for your exact iPhone model before ordering.

Connect Lightning earbuds or 3.5 mm earbuds to a Lightning iPhone

  1. For Lightning EarPods, insert the Lightning plug directly into the iPhone.
  2. For 3.5 mm earbuds, connect Apple’s Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter to the iPhone, then plug the earbuds into the adapter.
  3. Play audio and verify the output.
  4. Make a test call or recording if the microphone is important.

Apple’s requirements for Lightning EarPods and its Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter include an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with a Lightning connector and iOS 10 or later. Lightning headset components are also addressed in Apple’s MFi FAQ.

How to use wired earbuds with an Android phone

Android phone with a 3.5 mm jack

  1. Remove any protective plug or debris from the headphone jack.
  2. Insert the 3.5 mm earbud plug fully until it is seated.
  3. Start audio playback and adjust volume with the phone’s controls.
  4. Test the microphone and inline buttons with a recording or call if you need them.

This is the simplest arrangement because no digital-to-analog adapter is involved. A four-contact headset may still have limited button or microphone compatibility if the phone uses a different wiring standard.

Android phone with USB-C and 3.5 mm earbuds

  1. Confirm from the phone maker’s specifications that the USB-C port supports wired audio.
  2. Choose a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter that explicitly supports that phone or its required audio mode.
  3. Plug the adapter into the phone, then connect the earbuds to the adapter.
  4. Play audio and check the microphone separately.

Some phones require an adapter with an active digital-to-analog converter, while a passive adapter may work only with hosts that provide analog audio through USB-C. Because Android hardware varies, the phone’s documentation and the adapter maker’s compatibility list are more reliable than the connector shape. Compatibility is especially important when you need an inline microphone.

Android phone with USB-C earbuds

  1. Check that the phone supports USB audio accessories.
  2. Connect the USB-C earbuds directly.
  3. Start playback and confirm the phone switches output to the earbuds.
  4. Test calls, recording, volume, playback, and any noise-control functions individually.

USB-C earbuds are not guaranteed to work with every Android model. The available support material does not establish universal compatibility for all phones, earbuds, or adapters, so verify the exact combination before purchasing.

How to use wired earbuds with a laptop

Laptop with a combined 3.5 mm headset jack

  1. Locate the port marked with a headphones or headset icon.
  2. Insert the 3.5 mm plug fully.
  3. Play audio and confirm that the laptop selects the wired output.
  4. Open the operating system’s sound settings if the output remains on the speakers, then select the headphone or headset device manually.
  5. Use the input or microphone test to confirm that the inline microphone is recognized.

A combined headset jack is designed for headphones and microphone on one plug, but implementation varies. If the laptop has separate headphone and microphone ports, a phone-style four-contact plug may require a splitter or a different headset connection.

USB-C laptop without a headphone jack

  1. Check the laptop manual or manufacturer specifications for USB audio support on the USB-C port.
  2. For 3.5 mm earbuds, connect a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, then connect the earbuds.
  3. Alternatively, connect USB-C earbuds directly if the computer supports them.
  4. Select the wired output and input in the laptop’s sound settings.
  5. Test both playback and microphone recording before a meeting or presentation.

Apple lists many Mac models as compatible with its USB-C adapter, but that listing does not establish compatibility for every non-Apple computer. On a Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS laptop, use the computer maker’s specifications and the adapter documentation as the authority for USB audio and microphone support.

USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter

Use this when the host has USB-C and your earbuds have a standard 3.5 mm plug. Confirm whether the adapter contains the active conversion hardware your phone or laptop requires. Also check whether it supports a headset microphone and inline controls, not just stereo playback.

Apple documents its USB-C adapter for standard 3.5 mm audio devices connected to USB-C devices. The linked US listing showed $9.00 in 2026, but prices can change: Apple’s product page.

Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter

Use this to keep ordinary 3.5 mm earbuds with a Lightning iPhone or iPad. Apple specifies iOS 10 or later for its Lightning adapter. A Lightning adapter is not interchangeable with a USB-C adapter because the connectors and audio interfaces differ.

Direct USB-C or Lightning earbuds

Direct-connect earbuds eliminate the separate adapter, but they still must match the host’s port and supported audio interface. Before buying, verify microphone, button, and call support if those features matter. Direct connection is convenient when you use one compatible device; an adapter is more flexible when you want to reuse several pairs of 3.5 mm earbuds.

What to verify beyond basic sound

Microphone support

Playback and microphone input are separate compatibility checks. An adapter may pass stereo audio while failing to expose the inline microphone, or the host may support the microphone but not every button. Make a short recording and place a test call before relying on the earbuds for work.

Inline volume and playback controls

Buttons can depend on the host operating system, headset wiring, adapter electronics, and the app playing audio. Apple notes that some functions, including volume or playback control, may fail on earlier Apple products even when audio works. Treat each control as an additional feature to test rather than assuming full cross-platform parity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Audio-output selection

When sound stays on the speaker, reseat the connector first. Then open the phone or computer’s audio-output control and select the wired device. Some USB audio accessories appear only after they are connected while the device is unlocked or while an audio app is active.

Troubleshoot no sound, failed microphones, and intermittent connections

No sound at all

  • Push the plug or adapter in firmly and check that the connector type matches the host port.
  • Remove lint or debris from the port carefully; do not force the connector.
  • Try the earbuds on a known-compatible device. If they fail there too, the earbuds or cable are likely the problem.
  • Try a known-working headset with the same adapter and host to isolate the adapter or phone.
  • Check the selected audio output and raise the device volume.
  • For USB-C, verify that the host supports the required USB audio mode and that the adapter is the correct active or passive type.

Sound works but the microphone does not

  • Confirm that the plug is a headset plug with microphone contacts, not a three-contact stereo-only plug.
  • Check the app’s microphone permission and the operating system’s selected input device.
  • Test another recording app or a phone call to determine whether the failure is app-specific.
  • Confirm microphone support in the adapter and host specifications.

Buttons or volume controls do not work

  • Test audio playback separately; working sound does not prove that controls are supported.
  • Check the host documentation for headset-control limitations.
  • Try the earbuds without the adapter on a matching jack, if available, to identify whether the adapter is the limiting component.
  • On older Apple products, account for Apple’s warning that volume or playback controls may not function even when audio does.

Connection cuts out when you move

  • Inspect the cable and plug for bending or visible damage.
  • Remove a thick phone case that prevents the plug from seating fully.
  • Clean the connector and port with a dry, non-abrasive method.
  • Replace the adapter if gently moving it causes repeated disconnects while another adapter works normally.

Clean Apple EarPods and similar wired earbuds safely

For Apple EarPods, Apple recommends a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and gentle dry brushing of the microphone and speaker meshes. Do not run the earbuds under water, and do not use sharp or abrasive objects. The same dry, low-force approach is sensible for other wired earbuds unless their manufacturer gives different instructions.

A quick buying and setup checklist

  • Identify the earbud plug: 3.5 mm, USB-C, or Lightning.
  • Identify the host port: headphone jack, USB-C, or Lightning.
  • Confirm direct compatibility or select the matching adapter.
  • For USB-C, verify USB audio mode rather than relying on the port’s shape.
  • Check microphone and inline-control support if you need calls or remote controls.
  • Confirm operating-system requirements, including Apple’s iOS 10-or-later requirement for Lightning EarPods and the Lightning-to-3.5 mm adapter.
  • Test playback, microphone, and controls before an important call.
  • Keep the connector and speaker meshes dry and free of debris.
