If a display problem began immediately after a Windows or graphics-driver update, try Roll Back Driver first. Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, open the affected adapter’s Properties, choose the Driver tab, select Roll Back Driver, confirm, and restart. If the option is missing or the rollback does not solve the problem, uninstall the display adapter and restart Windows so it can attempt to reinstall the driver.
These procedures apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. You need administrator permissions, should save open work, and should expect at least one restart. Device Manager’s wording can vary by Windows build, graphics hardware, and the manufacturer’s driver package, so follow the labels actually shown on your PC.
Choose rollback or reinstall before changing anything
Rollback and reinstall are different operations. A rollback returns to an earlier driver that Windows still has available. Uninstalling removes the current device entry and driver package according to the options presented; after a restart, Windows attempts to detect the adapter and install a suitable driver again.

| What you observe | First action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The display problem started after a recent driver or Windows update | Try Roll Back Driver | Microsoft specifically recommends rollback for problems that begin after an update. See Microsoft’s screen-flicker guidance. |
| Roll Back Driver is unavailable or disabled | Uninstall the adapter and restart, or use the driver-update path | Windows cannot roll back when it has no previous driver available. |
| Windows does not restore a usable driver after restart | Get the correct driver from the PC or display-adapter manufacturer | The exact package depends on the hardware model and Windows configuration. |
| The screen flickers and it is unclear whether software or the driver is responsible | Compare the screen with Task Manager | If Task Manager flickers too, Microsoft says a display-driver cause is more likely. If Task Manager remains stable while the rest of the screen flickers, an incompatible app may be responsible. |
For an external monitor that stopped working after a change, Microsoft also documents rollback and reinstall as troubleshooting options in its external-monitor connection guidance.

Prepare safely
Save work and use an administrator account
Save documents, close applications that are not needed, and sign in with an account that has administrator permissions. Microsoft states that administrator permissions are required for rollback and uninstall operations in Device Manager. If Windows asks for administrator credentials, provide them before continuing.
Identify the correct adapter
Device Manager may list more than one item under Display adapters. A system can have integrated graphics, a separate graphics adapter, or both. Expand the category and read each device name carefully. Select the adapter associated with the symptoms rather than uninstalling every entry indiscriminately. If you are troubleshooting an external display, the adapter driving that output is still the relevant Device Manager entry; the monitor itself is not normally the device you roll back in this procedure.
Plan for a restart
The screen can briefly change resolution, go black, or redraw while a driver is changed. Do not begin when you need uninterrupted access to the computer. After both rollback and uninstall, restart when prompted or when the procedure below tells you to. Windows’ reinstall behavior occurs during or after that restart, not merely when the Device Manager window closes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck whether flicker points to the driver
When flickering is the symptom, use Task Manager to avoid blaming the driver automatically. Open Task Manager with the usual Windows shortcut or by searching for it, then observe whether its window flickers along with the rest of the display.

- Task Manager flickers too: Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points toward a display-driver cause, making rollback or reinstall a reasonable next step.
- Task Manager does not flicker: An incompatible application is more likely. Investigate recently installed or updated apps before repeatedly changing the driver.
This check does not prove the cause; it is a triage signal. A display can have more than one problem, and an app may behave differently from the desktop or a full-screen program.
How to roll back a display driver
- Open Device Manager. Select Start and type Device Manager, or use the taskbar search and open the matching system tool.
- Expand Display adapters. Select the arrow beside the category to show the installed display adapters.
- Open the adapter’s properties. Right-click the adapter connected with the problem and choose Properties. If there are multiple adapters, verify the device name before proceeding.
- Open the Driver tab. In the Properties window, select Driver. This page shows the controls for the installed driver.
- Select Roll Back Driver. Choose Roll Back Driver and confirm the prompt if Windows displays one. Windows may ask why you are rolling back; select the reason that best describes the problem.
- Restart Windows. Complete the restart rather than postponing it indefinitely. The earlier driver is not fully useful for testing until Windows has restarted with the changed driver.
- Reproduce the original problem carefully. Check the same display, application, cable arrangement, and monitor input that exposed the issue. Note whether flicker, blanking, abnormal resolution, or another symptom has changed.
If the button is unavailable, do not interpret that as a successful rollback. Microsoft says that when Roll Back Driver is unavailable, Windows does not have a previous driver to restore and cannot complete the rollback process.
Why “Roll Back Driver” is grayed out
The most common documented reason is that Windows has no earlier driver version available. This can happen when the current installation is the first driver Windows has recorded for that adapter, when an older package has been removed, or when the update did not leave a restorable previous version. The unavailable control is therefore a limitation of the driver history, not a command that needs to be forced.
Do not download an unrelated older package merely to make the button available. If rollback cannot proceed, use the uninstall-and-restart method below or the normal driver-update path, and identify the exact adapter before obtaining any replacement package.

How to uninstall and let Windows attempt a reinstall
- Save work and open Device Manager. Administrator permissions are still required. Search for and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters. Confirm the adapter you intend to change.
- Open the uninstall command. Right-click the adapter and choose the uninstall option shown by your version of Windows. Depending on the build and driver package, it may be labeled Uninstall device or use similar wording.
- Read the confirmation dialog. Microsoft’s display-specific instructions include an Attempt to remove the driver for this device checkbox where it is offered. Microsoft’s general Device Manager instructions do not show identical checkbox wording on every Windows version. Follow the text on your screen rather than assuming the checkbox is present or absent.
- Confirm the uninstall. Accept the dialog only after checking that the selected device is the intended display adapter.
- Restart the PC. After Windows restarts, Microsoft says Windows attempts to reinstall the driver for the device. The attempt is automatic; it is not a guarantee that the best or newest manufacturer package will be found.
- Check the result. Reopen Device Manager after the restart if necessary. Verify whether the adapter appears normally and test the display symptom that led you to uninstall it.
During the transition, Windows may use a basic display mode, change the resolution, or make the screen look different. That temporary change is not by itself evidence that the operation failed. Judge the result after the restart has completed and Windows has had time to enumerate the adapter.
What to do if Windows does not reinstall a suitable driver
Use Windows’ driver-update path
If the adapter does not return to a usable state, or if the display remains faulty, use Device Manager’s driver-update command for that adapter. The exact choices and labels can differ by Windows version. Follow the prompts offered by your installation and restart if Windows requests it.
Get the driver from the correct manufacturer
When Windows cannot find a suitable driver, Microsoft advises consulting the support site for the PC manufacturer or the display-adapter manufacturer. Identify the exact computer model or adapter model first. A driver for a similar-looking device can be incompatible, and a generic package may not include the customizations supplied for a particular laptop or desktop.

Do not assume a reinstall fixed the underlying cause
Windows’ automatic attempt after restart can restore a functional driver, but Microsoft does not promise that it will resolve every display problem. Persistent symptoms can result from an incompatible application, a different adapter than the one changed, a monitor or connection issue, or a driver package that Windows did not replace. Continue with diagnosis instead of repeating uninstall cycles without a new observation.

The screen is difficult to use
If flicker or blanking makes the desktop hard to operate, Microsoft’s flicker guidance notes that Safe Mode may be needed. The exact Safe Mode route depends on the condition of the PC and the recovery options available, so use the instructions in Microsoft’s screen-flickering troubleshooting page rather than guessing at a recovery sequence. Once Windows is usable in the appropriate mode, repeat only the Device Manager operation that matches your diagnosis.
The adapter does not appear as expected
Return to Device Manager and inspect Display adapters after the restart. If the expected entry is missing, or if Windows shows a warning symbol, the automatic reinstall may not have produced a suitable driver. Use the update route and then the exact manufacturer support resource for the PC or adapter. Record the device name and any error text before downloading anything.

The display still flickers after rollback
Rollback is a test of whether the newer driver introduced the problem, not a guaranteed repair. Recheck the Task Manager comparison. If Task Manager remains stable while another application flickers, investigate that application. If the entire display, including Task Manager, continues to flicker, proceed to the documented uninstall/reinstall or update path and consult the hardware manufacturer if Windows cannot provide a suitable driver.

An external monitor remains blank
Confirm which display adapter is driving the output and test after the restart. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting page covers rollback and reinstall in that context: Troubleshoot external monitor connections in Windows. The Device Manager procedure does not replace checks of the selected monitor input, cable, dock, or port; it addresses the Windows display-driver portion of the problem.
Windows keeps returning the same faulty behavior
Record when the problem occurs, whether Task Manager flickers, which adapter was changed, and what happened after each restart. This separates a repeatable driver regression from an app-specific symptom. If a manufacturer package is required, provide the manufacturer with the exact adapter and PC model and the sequence of changes already attempted.
Differences between Windows 10, Windows 11, and individual PCs
The cited Microsoft instructions cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11, but they do not establish identical wording for every build, OEM package, or device configuration. The category name Display adapters, the Driver tab, and the rollback concept are consistent, while confirmation text, checkbox availability, and update choices can vary.
A laptop with integrated and discrete graphics may show two adapters. A desktop can also expose more than one adapter, especially when both motherboard and add-in outputs are enabled. The safe rule is to select the entry tied to the symptom and to change one adapter at a time so that you can identify the effect of each operation.
Practical checklist
- Save open work before opening Device Manager.
- Use administrator permissions.
- Write down the adapter names if more than one appears.
- For flicker, compare the behavior of the desktop and Task Manager.
- If the problem followed an update, try rollback first.
- If rollback is unavailable, accept that Windows has no previous driver to restore.
- When uninstalling, read the exact confirmation wording and note whether the removal checkbox is offered.
- Restart after rollback or uninstall.
- Allow Windows to attempt its automatic reinstall before judging the result.
- If no suitable driver returns, use the Windows update path or the exact PC/adapter manufacturer support page.
- Use Safe Mode guidance from Microsoft if the screen is too difficult to operate normally.
Microsoft’s instructions and source links
The procedures in this guide follow Microsoft’s official documentation:
- Update drivers through Device Manager in Windows explains general update, uninstall, restart, and rollback behavior.
- Troubleshoot screen flickering in Windows covers Task Manager triage, rollback limitations, and display-driver troubleshooting.
- Troubleshoot external monitor connections in Windows includes rollback and reinstall options when an external display is involved.
The pages cover Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft does not state a universal success rate for rollback or reinstall, and neither operation guarantees a fix for every display symptom.
