First check whether the app has a Mac version or works in a browser. If not, choose based on your Mac’s processor: a supported Intel Mac can use Boot Camp to install Windows 10; a supported Apple silicon Mac can run a Windows 11 ARM virtual machine; and either type of Mac can connect to an eligible Windows 365 Cloud PC. These routes differ in compatibility, whether you must restart, and whether you need a reliable network connection.
Choose the right way to use the app
- Check for a Mac app or web version. This is usually the simplest option. Confirm with the app’s developer that the Mac or browser version includes the features you need; it may not match the Windows edition.
- Identify your Mac’s processor. Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. The processor or chip information tells you whether your Mac is Intel-based or uses Apple silicon, such as an M-series chip.
- Decide whether Windows must run locally. A local installation or virtual machine can work without streaming a whole desktop from the cloud, but app and device compatibility still need checking. A Cloud PC avoids installing Windows locally, but depends on network access and an eligible account.
| Route | Best fit | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Mac app or browser service | The developer offers a macOS or web version | Check that it supports the features and workflow you need. |
| Boot Camp | A supported Intel Mac | Installs Windows 10; switching between Windows and macOS requires a restart. Apple’s model and setup requirements apply. |
| Windows 11 ARM virtual machine | A supported Apple silicon Mac | Windows and macOS can run locally, but compatibility varies by app, driver, and peripheral. |
| Windows 365 Cloud PC | You have access to a Cloud PC, often through work or school | Windows runs remotely and streams to the Mac; availability depends on account access and network conditions. |
Check for a Mac or browser version first
A native Mac app or browser service avoids running Windows for that task. For Microsoft software, there are Mac apps, and Microsoft also lists native ARM64 Windows versions of several apps. Microsoft Support’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ says: “We now offer more native Arm64 versions of apps than ever before, including our fastest implementation of Microsoft 365 apps, like Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote.” That describes Windows ARM app availability, not a guarantee that every Windows program has a Mac version. Check the app maker’s feature and platform information for the exact task you need to do.
Use Boot Camp on a supported Intel Mac
Boot Camp is Apple’s route for installing Windows on supported Intel-based Macs. Apple’s current Boot Camp installation guidance covers Windows 10; it should not be read as support for installing Windows through Boot Camp on Apple silicon. With Boot Camp, you start the Mac in either Windows or macOS, so moving between them means restarting rather than using both at once.
Before starting, confirm that your exact Mac model is supported and meets Apple’s storage and setup requirements. Follow Apple’s Boot Camp Assistant User Guide and Boot Camp installation instructions; Apple’s Boot Camp system requirements lists compatible models and requirements. Do not assume that a Windows version or Mac model not covered by Apple’s guidance will work.

Run Windows 11 ARM in a virtual machine on Apple silicon
On Apple silicon, the local Windows route described by Microsoft is a Windows 11 ARM virtual machine using Parallels Desktop. Microsoft’s guidance for using Windows 11 on a Mac with Apple silicon identifies Parallels Desktop versions 18, 19, and 20 as authorized for Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise virtual machines on M1, M2, and M3 Macs. Those are the versions and chips named on that page; check its current requirements for newer Mac chips or Parallels releases rather than assuming they are covered. Parallels also documents its Windows 11 installation process.
A virtual machine lets you use Windows alongside macOS without restarting to switch operating systems. It does not make every Windows app compatible. Windows ARM and its emulation cannot be treated as a universal solution for every installer, driver, peripheral, game, or graphics-intensive workload. Before relying on it, ask the app developer about Windows ARM support and check requirements for any associated driver or device.

Connect to a Windows 365 Cloud PC
Windows 365 runs Windows in Microsoft’s cloud and streams the desktop to your Mac. Microsoft describes it as streaming “your Windows desktop, apps, settings, and content from the Microsoft Cloud to a Windows 365 Cloud PC” in its Windows 365 FAQ. You can connect from macOS using Windows App, which Microsoft documents for connecting to Windows 365 and other remote Windows environments; a browser connection may also be available for the service.

Verify app and device compatibility before committing
Compatibility depends on the particular app and how it works, not just on whether Windows starts. Check the app maker’s current requirements, particularly when your workflow depends on any of the following:
- Kernel-level or other specialized drivers, including drivers required by security software.
- Specialized peripherals and their Windows drivers.
- Graphics acceleration or a demanding game workload.
- Enterprise security or device-management software.
- An installer or app that explicitly requires a particular Windows architecture or release.
Ask the developer or your IT administrator whether the exact app, version, driver, and device are supported in your chosen setup. If compatibility is essential and cannot be confirmed, avoid making a Boot Camp, virtual machine, or remote desktop your only way to access the workflow.

Do not confuse Rosetta with Windows support
Rosetta translates software written for Intel-based Macs so it can run on Apple silicon Macs. It is a macOS app-compatibility feature, not a way to run Windows programs. Apple explains its purpose in About the Rosetta translation environment. A Windows app still needs one of the Windows routes above, or a Mac or web version from its developer.
