On Windows 8.1, you can make the PC sign in directly to the desktop instead of the Start screen, then pin your everyday desktop programs to the taskbar. Those two built-in changes remove the usual trip to Start for both sign-in and app launching. The instructions below are documented for Windows 8.1; Windows 8.0 does not have the same published checkbox, so verify your version first.

First, identify which version you have

“Windows 8” can mean two different releases. The boot-to-desktop setting described by Microsoft belongs to Windows 8.1, and the Windows 8.1 Update later changed the default behavior on some devices. Do not assume that a Windows 8.0 computer has the same controls.

Check the edition from the desktop

  1. Move the pointer to the lower-right corner to open the charms, or press Windows key + C.
  2. Select Settings, then Change PC settings.
  3. Open PC and devices, then PC info. The Windows edition and version are shown there.

You can also press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. The dialog identifies whether the installation is Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. If it says Windows 8.1, continue with the steps below. If it says Windows 8, the documented Windows 8.1 navigation checkbox may not be present; do not treat a missing option as a mistake in your procedure.

Make Windows 8.1 sign in to the desktop

The relevant option is in the taskbar and navigation properties, not in the general PC Settings screen. It controls what happens after sign-in and after the last app on a screen is closed.

Open Taskbar and Navigation Properties from the desktop

  1. Go to the desktop. If necessary, press Windows key + D.
  2. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar. On a touchscreen, press and hold the taskbar.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Navigation tab.

Use the Start-screen setting

  1. Under the Start-screen settings, select When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start.
  2. Select Apply, then OK (or select OK if that is the only confirmation button shown).
  3. Sign out and sign in again, or restart the PC, to test the result.

After this change, signing in should land on the desktop rather than displaying the full-screen Start menu. Closing all apps on a screen should also return you to the desktop under the wording of the checkbox. The setting does not remove Start; you can still open it whenever you need it.

Alternative route to the same controls

If you are already on Start, type taskbar and choose Taskbar and Navigation from the search results. Open the Navigation tab and select the same checkbox. This search route is useful when the desktop is not currently visible, while the taskbar right-click route is usually faster once you are working on the desktop.

Stop returning to Start for everyday programs

Booting directly to the desktop handles the sign-in transition. It does not change how you launch a desktop application that is not already available. Pinning those programs to the taskbar gives you a permanent desktop launch point.

Pin a running desktop program

  1. Open the desktop program once. Its icon appears on the taskbar while it is running.
  2. Right-click the program’s taskbar icon. On a touchscreen, press and hold the icon.
  3. Select Pin this program to taskbar.
  4. Close the program if you want to verify that the icon remains. A pinned icon stays on the taskbar after the program exits.

Select the pinned icon whenever you need the program. This avoids opening Start just to find a desktop executable. Repeat the process for the small set of programs you use most often; the taskbar is easier to scan when it is not filled with rarely used shortcuts.

What pinning does and does not do

  • It creates a direct launcher on the desktop taskbar.
  • It does not uninstall the program, move its files, or change its default file associations.
  • It does not prevent Start from opening when you press the Windows key or use a Start-screen shortcut.
  • It does not pin a program that is unavailable to the current account; the application must already be installed and usable.

Set desktop-oriented defaults where they still apply

Windows 8.1 included separate controls for some built-in experiences. If you still use Internet Explorer 11, its historical Programs-tab settings can open links in the desktop version of Internet Explorer, including links represented by pinned website tiles. This is relevant only to installations that still have that legacy browser and its corresponding settings.

Do not expect this browser option to control every modern app or every link on the PC. It affects the Internet Explorer behavior described by the setting; other applications can have their own defaults. If you no longer use Internet Explorer 11, leave this step out rather than changing a setting that has no practical effect.

Keep Start available as a deliberate fallback

Using the desktop by default does not make Start useless. Start remains the full-screen tile menu for apps and shortcuts that are not on the taskbar. Organize it so that an occasional visit is quick rather than trying to eliminate it completely.

Group the items you still need

  • Place frequently used apps, folders, and files in the first visible tile groups.
  • Move less-used items farther to the right so they do not compete with daily tools.
  • Use meaningful group positions so you can recognize the destination without searching.

This is a fallback arrangement, not a second desktop. Keep the taskbar for programs you launch repeatedly and use Start groups for items that are occasional, newly installed, or difficult to pin directly.

Understand the Windows 8.1 Update default

Windows 8.1 Update changed the initial behavior by device type. On non-tablet PCs, the default after the update was the desktop at startup. Tablets were treated differently, because the full-screen Start experience was retained for those devices. Users could still change startup and Start behavior in Taskbar and Navigation Properties.

Situation What you may see What to do
Windows 8.1 with the update on a non-tablet PC The PC may already open at the desktop. No change is needed unless you want to confirm the checkbox or adjust another navigation option.
Windows 8.1 on a tablet Start may remain the startup destination. Open Navigation properties and select the desktop option if it is available and suits your touch workflow.
Windows 8.1 without the expected default Update level, device type, or a changed user setting can explain the difference. Check the Navigation tab instead of assuming the installation is faulty.
Windows 8.0 The Windows 8.1 checkbox may not exist. Verify the version before following a Windows 8.1 procedure; these steps are not a promise of a Windows 8.0 feature.

The distinction matters when following older instructions. A computer that already starts at the desktop may be behaving exactly as Windows 8.1 Update intended, while a tablet may be following a different device default.

Choose the right change for the problem

Change Built into Windows 8.1? Prevents the startup trip to Start? Helps launch programs after sign-in? Compatibility note
Enable “go to the desktop instead of Start” Yes Yes Indirectly Documented for Windows 8.1; update level and device type affect defaults.
Pin desktop programs to the taskbar Yes No Yes Works for installed desktop programs with a taskbar icon.
Organize Start tile groups Yes No Only when you intentionally open Start Useful as a fallback for apps, folders, and files not kept on the taskbar.
Set desktop Internet Explorer behavior Available in the legacy Internet Explorer settings No Only for the affected browser links Relevant only if Internet Explorer 11 and its historical Programs options are still in use.

For most desktop users, enable the first option and pin the programs used every day. The other two changes are selective: organize Start for occasional use, and adjust the browser setting only when that legacy browser is part of the workflow.

What the desktop option changes—and what it does not

The checkbox has two specific jobs. First, it changes the destination after you sign in. Second, it tells Windows to return to the desktop when all apps on a screen have been closed. It is not a universal “desktop mode” switch for every action in Windows 8.1.

  • It changes startup destination: a qualifying sign-in goes to the desktop rather than the full-screen Start menu.
  • It changes the all-apps-closed behavior: closing the last app on a screen can return you to the desktop.
  • It leaves Start installed: Start remains available whenever you deliberately open it.
  • It does not convert app types: a modern app remains a modern app, and a desktop program remains a desktop program.
  • It does not replace taskbar shortcuts: you still need to pin frequently used programs if you want one-click desktop access.

This distinction explains why the best setup uses two changes rather than one. The Navigation option removes the predictable trip immediately after sign-in; taskbar pins remove repeated trips when you need software later.

Build a low-switching desktop routine

Start with the programs you launch every day, not every application installed on the machine. Open each one from its existing shortcut, pin its taskbar icon, and close it to confirm the pin remains. Arrange the pinned icons in a consistent order so your hand or pointer can find them without scanning the Start screen.

Keep occasional tools in Start tile groups instead of crowding the taskbar. For example, a rarely used folder or newly installed utility can remain in a visible group while your regular desktop programs occupy the taskbar. This gives you a predictable division: taskbar for repeated work, Start for intentional fallback access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a touch device, the same approach works with press-and-hold actions, but the full-screen Start experience may remain the device’s default after the Windows 8.1 Update. In that case, decide whether the desktop destination is actually more convenient for your touch workflow before changing it. The setting is optional, and the update’s device-specific behavior is not evidence that the installation is broken.

Troubleshoot when the desktop option does not work

The Navigation tab is missing

Recheck the version with winver. The published boot-to-desktop instruction is for Windows 8.1, not a general Windows 8.0 instruction. If the system reports Windows 8.0, do not keep searching for a checkbox that may not be included in that release.

The checkbox is present but the PC still opens Start

  • Confirm that the checkbox is selected, then choose Apply or OK before closing the dialog.
  • Sign out completely or restart; changing the option does not necessarily move an already open session from Start to the desktop.
  • Check whether another account is being used. Taskbar and Navigation settings can be associated with the user profile where they were changed.
  • On a tablet or a system with a different Windows 8.1 Update state, compare the observed behavior with the device-specific defaults rather than treating it as a universal rule.

The desktop appears, but an app still sends you to Start

The boot-to-desktop checkbox controls sign-in and the behavior after closing all apps on a screen. It does not convert every app into a desktop program. Pin the desktop programs you use, and keep Start organized for apps whose interface is designed for the Start environment.

A pinned program disappears

Look for the program again in the taskbar while it is running. If its icon is present, right-click it and choose Pin this program to taskbar again. If the application was removed or is no longer available to the account, taskbar pinning cannot launch it until the program is restored.

Know the support and security status

The navigation changes still work on an existing Windows 8.1 installation, but the operating system is no longer supported by Microsoft. Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023. Microsoft states that computers running Windows 8.1 continue to function, but Microsoft no longer provides technical support, software updates, or security updates or fixes. Windows 8 support ended earlier, on January 12, 2016.

That lifecycle status is separate from the desktop setting: enabling the checkbox can change the interface, but it cannot restore security maintenance. Microsoft recommends moving to a currently supported Windows release. Before considering an upgrade, check the device’s hardware, drivers, applications, licensing, and data-backup requirements; compatibility is not established merely because the old PC can still boot.

Cost and optional further reading

You do not need to buy software, install a utility, or subscribe to a service to avoid the Start-screen trip. The desktop destination setting, taskbar pinning, and Start organization are native Windows 8.1 features. Be cautious of utilities that promise to “fix” this behavior when the built-in Navigation tab is available.

For readers who prefer a printed reference, Windows 8.1 Plain & Simple from Microsoft Press includes coverage of the Windows 8.1 interface and navigation settings. It is optional; edition, stock, and retailer availability can change, so confirm those details before purchasing.

A practical setup sequence

If the goal is to spend nearly all of the session on the desktop, use this order:

  1. Run winver and confirm that the PC is running Windows 8.1.
  2. Open Taskbar and Navigation Properties from the taskbar or search for taskbar from Start.
  3. On Navigation, select When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start, then save.
  4. Sign out and back in to verify the startup destination.
  5. Open each desktop program you use daily and choose Pin this program to taskbar from its taskbar icon.
  6. Arrange the remaining apps, folders, and files into visible Start tile groups for occasional access.
  7. If Internet Explorer 11 is still required, review its Programs-tab desktop-link option; otherwise, leave this legacy setting untouched.

This sequence separates the two sources of friction: the navigation option changes where a session begins, while taskbar pinning changes how desktop software is launched afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop Windows 8 from switching to the Start screen?

If the computer is running Windows 8.1, open Taskbar and Navigation Properties, select the Navigation tab, and check When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start. Apply the change, then sign out and back in. Windows 8.0 may not include this published checkbox.

How do I boot straight to the desktop in Windows 8.1?

From the desktop, right-click the taskbar, choose Properties, open Navigation, select the desktop-at-sign-in option, and choose Apply or OK. You can also search for taskbar from Start and open Taskbar and Navigation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Windows 8 without the Start screen at all?

No. The setting changes the startup and all-apps-closed destination, but it does not remove Start. Start remains available for apps, folders, and files that you choose not to keep on the taskbar.

Why does my Windows 8.1 PC already start on the desktop?

Windows 8.1 Update made the desktop the default startup destination on non-tablet PCs. A tablet may retain Start as its default, and a user can also change the setting. Check the Navigation tab to see the current choice.

Does this procedure work on Windows 8.0?

The documented instructions are specifically for Windows 8.1. Verify the release with winver; if it reports Windows 8.0 and the Navigation checkbox is absent, that is a version difference rather than a step you missed.

Do I need another program or paid utility?

No. Windows 8.1 supplies the Navigation setting, taskbar pinning, and Start tile organization. An optional Windows 8.1 reference book may help with general navigation, but it is not required for this change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does closing an app sometimes return me to Start?

The desktop option applies when you sign in or close all apps on a screen. If the checkbox is not selected, or if the installation is Windows 8.0, the system may follow different behavior. Confirm the version and the Navigation setting.

How do I open desktop programs without visiting Start?

Launch each frequently used desktop program once, right-click its running taskbar icon, and select Pin this program to taskbar. The pinned icon remains after the program closes and provides a direct desktop launcher.

Can the Internet Explorer setting force every link to open on the desktop?

No. The historical Programs-tab option applies to the Internet Explorer behavior it describes, including certain pinned website tiles. It does not control every modern app or every link on the computer.

Is Windows 8.1 still receiving security updates?

No. Microsoft ended Windows 8.1 support on January 10, 2023. The system can continue to function, but Microsoft no longer provides technical support, software updates, or security updates and fixes. Windows 8 support ended on January 12, 2016.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

On Windows 8.1, select When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start in Taskbar and Navigation Properties, then pin daily desktop programs to the taskbar. Verify the release first, remember that Windows 8.0 may not have the checkbox, and treat the unsupported operating system as a security risk even after the interface is configured.
