Waze can do more than draw a route and announce a turn. You can report what you see by voice, receive warnings for road features such as railway crossings and lane endings, let the app learn your route choices, keep directions visible on a locked Android phone, and request roadside help. The controls and availability differ by phone, Android Auto, CarPlay, country and map coverage.

These features improve awareness and convenience; they do not guarantee the safest or fastest route, immediate assistance or complete road information. Waze relies on changing, crowd-sourced reports and an internet connection for full operation.

Set up Waze before you move

Configure reporting, alerts and navigation preferences while parked. Waze’s interface and feature availability can vary by country, operating system and the data mapped for a particular road. Keep the app updated, grant only the permissions you are comfortable with, and position your phone before driving. If you use a car mount, install and adjust it before departure and follow local laws; Waze does not claim that any particular mount makes driving safer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check both the phone app and the display you actually use in the car. Android Auto and CarPlay can expose a different set of controls than the phone, while Android Automotive is the car’s built-in operating system rather than an Android phone connection. A setting you enabled on the phone may therefore be unavailable on the dashboard display.

Full live navigation requires a data connection. Waze says it cannot locate you or calculate a route without a connection, and intermittent service can make traffic and hazard alerts unreliable. You also cannot submit a hazard report until the app can reach Waze’s servers. A route that loaded earlier should not be treated as proof that live rerouting will continue through a dead zone. See Waze’s connectivity guidance for the service’s stated limits.

Report what is happening with your voice

Talk to report is the quickest way to tell Waze about a changing situation without typing. Waze describes the feature as a way to “Tell Waze what you see during your drive and help other drivers stay safe.” It can understand everyday descriptions such as heavy traffic or a police officer, but availability is not worldwide. Voice reporting is most useful for an event that is happening now; it is not a way to enter a remembered incident later.

Turn on Talk to report on a phone

  1. Open Waze while parked.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Choose Voice and sound, then Talk to report.
  4. Enable the feature and allow microphone access if your phone requests it.
  5. During navigation, tap the Talk to report icon and describe the event in ordinary language.

Use a short, concrete description, such as heavy traffic, a stopped car on the shoulder or a police officer. Keep your eyes on the road and let a passenger make the report when possible. The complete setup and current country limitations are listed in Waze’s Talk to Waze help page. If the option is missing, your country, app version or account may not support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the correct setup for Android Auto and CarPlay

Android Auto has its own reporting controls under its reporting options, so enabling the phone toggle alone may not be enough. CarPlay uses the Talk to report setting on the connected iPhone. Waze states that Talk to report is not supported on Android Automotive, the operating system built into some cars. Do not confuse Android Automotive with an Android phone running Android Auto.

If voice recognition misunderstands you, use the standard report control only when it can be done safely, or ask a passenger. A spoken report still depends on a server connection and does not guarantee that Waze will classify or publish the event.

Report police sightings and hazards accurately

The standard report menu remains useful when you need a specific category. Police reports can include choices such as a mobile camera, a hidden officer or the other side of the road, although the choices vary by country. Hazard categories include roadworks, a car on the shoulder, a broken traffic light, a pothole and an object in the road. Waze’s instructions for police reports are at Report police sightings, and its hazard instructions are at Report road hazards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn on alerts for road features, not just traffic

Waze can warn about fixed or mapped road characteristics that may require extra attention. These are separate from a simple congestion report and can be especially useful on unfamiliar roads. They can provide an advance cue to scan for signs, lane markings, pedestrians or merging traffic, but they do not replace those checks.

Choose what appears and what speaks

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Alerts and reports.
  3. Choose Reports, then Road features.
  4. For each feature, choose whether it appears on the map and whether it triggers an in-drive voice alert or a pop-up.

You can keep a feature visible without adding another spoken announcement, or choose a voice alert for features that are easy to miss. The controls and definitions are documented in Manage road features alerts. Review the choices after an app update because labels and supported categories can change.

Road-feature categories you can encounter

The documented list includes:

  • Railway crossings
  • Traffic lights
  • Toll booths
  • Speed bumps
  • Sharp curves
  • Speed-limit changes
  • Complex intersections
  • Merging areas
  • School safety zones
  • Lane endings
  • Raised pedestrian crossings
  • High-speed crossings
  • Shoulder endings
  • Narrow bridges

Whether you receive an alert depends on a road feature being reported by a partner or added by a map editor. An absent alert does not prove that the feature is absent from the road. School safety-zone alerts are generally active only during specified hours on school days, so they should not be interpreted as a permanent zone warning. Likewise, a map marker may not reflect a temporary change, construction layout or a newly installed sign.

Let Waze personalize routes—or turn it off

Waze can use your past drives and route selections to tune estimated arrival times and suggest routes that fit your habits. For example, it may learn that you often avoid a particular street or prefer a familiar highway entrance. This is personalization based on your history, not a promise that every suggestion is objectively faster or better.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enable or disable personalized navigation

  1. Open the Waze app on your phone.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Tap Navigation, then Personalization.
  4. Use Personalized navigation to control personalized ETAs and route suggestions.

The settings and eligibility details are in Get personalized navigation. Waze notes that the feature may not be supported in your area and may require enough drive history before it has useful information. A new account, a recently changed commute or a shared phone may therefore produce little personalization at first.

Choose the right trade-off

  • Keep it on if your normal detours and preferred roads are useful context and you want ETAs tuned to your driving history.
  • Turn it off if you want route suggestions based less on past behavior, are sharing the phone with other drivers, or do not want new drives used for personalization.
  • Delete relevant drives from navigation history if you want those drives removed from the data used to personalize ETAs and routes, as Waze explains in its help documentation.

Turning personalization off does not turn off ordinary navigation, traffic information or every other history setting. It changes how past drives and route choices influence personalized ETAs and route suggestions.

Keep directions visible when an Android phone is locked

On Android phones, Waze’s locked-screen navigation is enabled by default. It can keep the route and directions visible after the phone locks, reducing the need to unlock the device just to see the next instruction. You still need to unlock the phone for all Waze functions, including actions that require interaction beyond the locked-screen view.

Disable the feature if you do not want it

  1. Open Waze.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Choose General.
  4. Turn off Lock screen navigation.

Waze documents the behavior and setting at Keep Waze visible when your phone is locked. Locked-screen navigation is not supported on Android Auto, Android Automotive or CarPlay; those displays follow their own in-car interface rules. If the screen goes dark or the route disappears, do not troubleshoot while moving: pull over, unlock the phone when safe, and check the connection and display settings.

Use in-app roadside help with realistic expectations

Waze’s roadside-help menu can connect you to different kinds of assistance, depending on country and availability. It is an option for requesting help, not a guarantee that someone will arrive or that a provider will be available.

What you can request

  • Fellow Wazers: ask nearby members of the Waze community for help with being out of fuel, a flat tire, a battery problem, a medical issue or another need.
  • A local roadside professional: in some countries, Waze offers contact with a third-party roadside provider. Availability and response are controlled by that provider, not guaranteed by Waze.
  • Emergency services: use the emergency-calling option when the situation requires official emergency response.

The fellow-Wazer help icon remains active for 30 minutes according to Waze’s instructions. You must be near your car when submitting a request. Details and country qualifications are in Request roadside help. Give your location and problem clearly, stay visible and out of traffic when possible, and follow instructions from emergency personnel or the provider.

Platform limits

Roadside help is not supported on Android Auto, Android Automotive or CarPlay. If you drive through an in-car display, use the phone app while safely parked or make the appropriate call directly. For an immediate danger, prioritize emergency services and your physical safety over any in-app request.

Know what each feature needs—and what it cannot promise

Feature Where to enable or use it Platform support Data, history or coverage requirement What it does not guarantee
Talk to report Phone: Settings → Voice and sound → Talk to report; Android Auto has reporting options; CarPlay uses the phone setting Phone, Android Auto and CarPlay where offered; not Android Automotive Microphone permission may be required; country availability varies; reports need a server connection It does not ensure that speech is understood, that every report is accepted or that the feature is available in your country
Police and hazard reports Use the report menu during navigation Availability and category choices vary by country and platform Report only current events near the incident; map and alert data changes over time A report is not proof that a hazard remains, and an unreported hazard may still exist
Road-feature alerts Settings → Alerts and reports → Reports → Road features Shown and announced according to Waze’s supported app experience Depends on partner or map-editor mapping; school-zone alerts usually follow school-day hours No alert does not establish that a road feature is absent
Personalized navigation Settings → Navigation → Personalization → Personalized navigation Phone navigation where supported Location support and sufficient drive history are required; past drives and route choices inform results A personalized ETA or route is not guaranteed to be fastest or objectively preferable
Locked-screen navigation Android: Settings → General → Lock screen navigation Android phone; not Android Auto, Android Automotive or CarPlay Some actions still require unlocking It does not expose every Waze function while the phone is locked
Roadside help Open the roadside-help option in Waze Phone app; not Android Auto, Android Automotive or CarPlay Fellow-Wazer requests last 30 minutes; professional help is country-dependent; stay near the car It does not guarantee dispatch, arrival time, availability or a successful repair
Live navigation and reporting Use Waze while connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi where appropriate All platforms depend on their connection and integration Waze says route location, navigation and hazard reporting require server connectivity It is not a dependable offline navigation or reporting system

A practical way to combine the features

  1. Before leaving: set your destination while parked, check that the route loads, and decide whether personalized navigation matches your privacy and routing preference.
  2. Prepare alerts: enable only the road-feature voice alerts you can process comfortably. Too many announcements can compete with essential turn instructions.
  3. Choose your display: on an Android phone, decide whether locked-screen navigation should remain enabled. If you use Android Auto or CarPlay, test the in-car display before moving; phone-only features may not carry over.
  4. During the drive: use Talk to report or the report menu for events you personally observe. Keep reports specific and close to the incident.
  5. When an alert is stale: select Not there when that control is offered, rather than assuming every displayed report is current.
  6. If you break down: move to a safe location if possible, remain near the vehicle when submitting a roadside request, and use emergency services for immediate danger.
  7. If coverage drops: expect missing or delayed traffic information and do not rely on Waze to recalculate or accept reports until connectivity returns. Keep another lawful way to navigate available for areas with poor service.

A simple pre-drive check can prevent most surprises: confirm the destination, glance at the connection indicator, verify that voice volume is audible, and make sure the phone is secured without blocking your view. Do not change settings, type a destination or study the map once the vehicle is moving.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating Waze as an authority: crowd-sourced information can be incomplete, delayed or wrong. Continue to obey signs, signals, speed limits and directions from emergency personnel.
  • Assuming every platform has the same controls: Android Auto, CarPlay and Android Automotive have different support boundaries, especially for Talk to report, locked-screen navigation and roadside help.
  • Reporting from memory: Waze asks users to report events seen in real time and near the incident. Do not add an old sighting after the situation has changed.
  • Confusing personalization with optimization: a route that fits your history may not minimize time in every traffic condition.
  • Relying on a road-feature alert as a guarantee: map coverage comes from partners and editors, so the absence of an alert is not evidence that the road is clear.
  • Waiting for in-app roadside assistance in an emergency: the feature may connect you to a community member or third party, but response is not assured.
  • Leaving every alert switched on: a stream of pop-ups and announcements can distract you. Select the warnings that matter on your roads and review them after changing vehicles or regions.
  • Assuming a loaded map is fully offline: Waze still needs a connection for location, routing updates and reporting. Downloaded-looking map tiles do not change that limitation.

What “safer and faster” realistically means

These hidden controls can make Waze more useful: voice reporting reduces menu navigation, road-feature alerts add context beyond congestion, personalization can reflect familiar choices, and locked-screen directions reduce unnecessary unlocking on a supported Android phone. Their value depends on accurate reports, mapped road features, drive history and a working connection. Use them as aids to attentive driving—not as evidence that Waze has found the safest or fastest possible route.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I report something in Waze by voice?

On a phone, open Waze while parked and go to Settings → Voice and sound → Talk to report. Enable it, grant microphone permission if requested, then tap the Talk to report icon during navigation and describe what you see. Android Auto has separate reporting options; CarPlay uses the connected iPhone’s setting. The feature is not supported on Android Automotive and may not be offered in every country.

How do I turn on Waze road alerts?

Go to Settings → Alerts and reports → Reports → Road features. For each category, choose whether it appears on the map and whether it produces an in-drive voice alert or pop-up. Alerts depend on partner or map-editor coverage, so no alert does not prove that a feature is absent.

Can Waze learn my routes?

Yes, where the feature is supported and Waze has enough drive history. Under Settings → Navigation → Personalization → Personalized navigation, you can control personalized ETAs and route suggestions. You can turn personalization off, and deleting drives from navigation history removes them from the data used for those personalized results.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Waze work when my Android phone is locked?

Waze says locked-screen navigation is on by default on Android phones. It can keep directions visible, but you must unlock the phone for all features. Disable it at Settings → General → Lock screen navigation. It is not supported on Android Auto, Android Automotive or CarPlay.

Can Waze get roadside assistance?

The phone app can let you request help from fellow Wazers, contact a local third-party roadside professional where available, or call emergency services. Fellow-Wazer requests remain active for 30 minutes, and you must be near your car when submitting one. Availability and response are not guaranteed, and the feature is not supported on Android Auto, Android Automotive or CarPlay.

Will Waze navigate without internet service?

Waze says it cannot locate you or navigate a route without a connection. Intermittent service can make traffic and hazard alerts unreliable, and reports cannot be submitted without a connection to Waze’s servers. Keep another lawful navigation option for areas with weak coverage.

Why did I not receive an alert for a railway crossing or school zone?

Road-feature alerts rely on partner or map-editor reports and may not cover every road. School safety-zone alerts generally operate only during specified hours on school days. Missing an alert does not establish that the feature is not present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when a Waze report is no longer true?

If an alert is stale, tap Not there when that control is offered. This can reduce the time the report remains displayed. Continue to obey the road, signs and signals even when the app shows no warning.

The Bottom Line

Enable Waze’s voice reporting, road-feature alerts, personalization and locked-screen navigation while parked, then test which controls work on your exact phone and car display. Keep expectations realistic: coverage, country support, drive history and connectivity all matter, and no Waze feature guarantees the safest route, the fastest arrival or immediate roadside help.
