Yes, Waze has settings for camera alerts, but neither a sound nor a map marker is a guarantee that every camera will be reported. Set up alerts before you leave, follow posted signs and speed limits, and treat Waze as supplementary route information—not as a substitute for attention to the road.
What Waze’s camera alerts can—and cannot—tell you
Waze offers controls for displaying camera information on the map and for getting an alert while driving. Those controls affect how Waze presents camera reports; they do not make its camera information complete. Waze says camera records are added based on reports from partners and map editors. As its camera-alert help page puts it: “If a camera wasn’t reported by an editor or partner, Waze may not know about it.”
That has two practical consequences. A camera may be present even if Waze shows no marker, and the absence of a sound does not establish that there is no camera ahead. Waze says drivers traveling at or under the speed limit may see a speed-camera alert on the map without hearing an alert. A visible marker and an audible warning are therefore not interchangeable, and neither is a complete camera check.

Use camera alerts as one source of context while continuing to obey posted signs and local speed limits. Do not speed up, change your driving, or assume a road is clear because Waze is silent. The app’s reports are useful when present, but its own documentation makes clear that an unreported camera may not appear.

This is the direct answer to the common question of whether Waze can audibly alert you to speed cameras: it has an “Alert while driving” setting, which controls voice and on-screen alerts for the selected camera alert type. But an enabled setting cannot make a missing community or partner report appear, and Waze may show a marker without sounding when you are at or below the limit. Think of the feature as notification of information Waze has, not a promise to announce every camera.
It is useful to separate three things that can otherwise get conflated: whether a camera report exists in Waze, whether Waze is set to show that report on the map, and whether it is set to alert while driving. If one of those conditions is absent, you may not get the cue you expect. Even when all are present, Waze’s documentation says the camera map is not guaranteed complete.
How to set up camera alerts before a trip
Choose the display and alert settings while parked, before starting your route. Waze documents this path:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Waze on your phone.
- Open the menu and choose Settings.
- Tap Alerts and reports, then Reports, then Cameras.
- Select the camera alert type you want to configure.
- Set Show on map to control whether the camera alert appears on the map.
- Set Alert while driving to control the alert while driving. Waze describes this as controlling both a voice alert and an on-screen alert.
The two controls serve different purposes: Show on map controls map display, while Alert while driving controls voice and on-screen notification during a drive. If you want both forms of information, check both settings rather than assuming that enabling one automatically enables the other. Waze’s instructions are on its Manage camera alerts page.
The distinction matters when choosing how you want Waze to communicate. A map display is a visual cue; the driving-alert setting covers a voice alert and an on-screen cue. Turning on one should not be taken to mean the other is on. If you prefer not to rely on a sound, you can still configure what appears on the map, but that does not make it safe to divert your attention to the screen while moving. Conversely, an audible alert is not a substitute for checking signs or watching the road.
Waze’s instructions have you choose the alert type first and then adjust the available settings for that type. Use the controls to set up the kinds of camera information you want to see or hear; do not assume that every camera type or report category is identical in every place. Waze notes that some app features and reporting options can vary by country.
If you use Waze through Android Auto or CarPlay, disconnect the phone from the car interface before changing settings. Make the changes on the phone; Waze says they apply when you use the app in the car. Finish setup while parked rather than interacting with the phone once the vehicle is moving.

A simple pre-trip check is to open the camera settings, confirm the map-display and driving-alert choices you intend to use, and then connect to the car system after those changes are made. That check is about configuration, not verification that the route contains all cameras. Waze does not say that enabling both controls checks the completeness of reports along a route.
How to interpret a camera alert on the road
A map marker is information to consider, not an instruction to make a sudden maneuver. Keep your attention on driving and use the marker as an additional cue to notice the road, signs, and conditions around you. If you hear no sound, do not infer that no camera is there: Waze may show a camera alert on the map without sounding when you are at or below the speed limit.
- Marker and sound: Waze is displaying and alerting about a reported camera; that does not establish that the map contains every camera.
- Marker but no sound: This can happen when you are at or under the speed limit, according to Waze.
- No marker or sound: This does not prove that the road has no camera. Waze may not know about cameras that have not been reported.
Do not use the alert as a reason to watch the phone instead of the road. The purpose of configuring the app beforehand is to reduce the need to adjust it during a trip; it does not make phone interaction while moving safe.
These possibilities are worth remembering because silence can have more than one explanation. Waze may not have a report for a camera, or it may have a report that is displayed on the map without an audible alert in the circumstances Waze describes. From the driver’s seat, a silent app cannot tell you which explanation applies. The safe response is the same either way: maintain the posted speed, follow the road, and do not treat an absent cue as clearance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLikewise, an alert does not call for abrupt braking, swerving, or a last-second route change. Use it as road context, then respond to the actual road and applicable signs in a calm, predictable way. Waze’s documentation explains what its settings do; it does not establish that its alerts replace independent attention to the driving task.
What other Waze alerts add to route awareness
Camera reports are only one kind of road context in Waze. Other alerts can help flag conditions or features along a route, but their information also has limits. These alerts complement normal attention to the road; they do not replace signs, judgment, or safe driving.
A useful way to group these notices is by what they tell you. Camera and police reports concern reported enforcement or sightings; crash-history alerts and road-feature alerts add other kinds of route awareness. Each has its own scope, and a missing alert should not be read as a guarantee that the corresponding condition is absent. These are information layers, not a full inventory of everything a driver may encounter.

Average-speed enforcement zones
In countries where average-speed enforcement zones exist, Waze says it can provide voice and visual alerts when you approach a zone. However, the app currently does not calculate or show your average speed within it. An alert is not a running average-speed measurement or confirmation that your speed complies with the applicable limit. See Waze’s average-speed enforcement zone alert guidance for the feature’s stated behavior.
This distinction answers a separate question drivers may have: an approaching-zone notice is not an in-app average-speed display. Waze says it currently does not calculate or show that average. The alert tells you that you are approaching a zone in a country where the feature is available; it should not be treated as a measurement of your driving through it. Continue to follow posted limits and other road instructions throughout the zone.
Roads with a history of crashes
Waze describes crash-history alerts as dynamic and says they may be limited to the most critical areas. It also says these alerts do not distinguish between major and minor crashes. The app’s crash-history alert guidance cautions: “If an alert is not displayed, it does not necessarily mean a road does not have a history of crashes.” A missing alert is not evidence that a road is free of crash history.
Because Waze says these notices may be prioritized or omitted, a driver should not use a quiet route display to conclude that a road has no crash history. And because the alerts do not distinguish major from minor crashes, the presence of a notice is not a complete description of the history or current condition. Treat it as context to stay attentive rather than a prediction about what will happen on the trip.
Road-feature alerts
Waze lists alerts for road features such as railroad crossings, traffic lights, toll booths, speed bumps, sharp curves, speed-limit changes, complex intersections, school zones, lane endings, and narrow bridges. These details rely on reports from partners and map editors, so an absent alert should not be treated as proof that the feature is absent. Use the alert as a prompt to watch for the feature, not as a substitute for seeing and responding to the road itself. Waze’s road-feature alert instructions describe the available types.
The list shows why road context can be broader than camera warnings: some notices concern changes in layout, traffic controls, or surface features rather than enforcement. For instance, an alert about a sharp curve or lane ending can be a reminder to pay attention to the road ahead, while an alert about a toll booth or railroad crossing identifies a feature to expect. But the underlying information relies on partners and map editors, so the list is not a guarantee that every such feature has been reported or will be announced.
High-risk-area alerts
Waze says high-risk-area alerts are currently offered only in Israel and limited areas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; those areas are avoided by default. This is a geographically limited feature, not a general-purpose warning available on every route. Waze’s high-risk-area guidance describes its availability and default behavior.

If you are outside those stated areas, do not expect this alert to function as a general warning for your route. Even where the feature is available, Waze’s stated default is to avoid those areas. This limited availability is another reason not to treat Waze as an all-purpose safety monitor or assume that an absent notice means a particular area has been assessed and cleared.
How to treat police reports and keep them useful
Waze can offer police-report categories that include police, mobile camera, hidden, and other-side sightings. The available options vary by country. These are community reports, not a complete or independently verified list of enforcement activity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Waze advises users to report only what they see in real time and to report it close to the incident. If a report is no longer accurate, users can mark it Not there. That helps keep reports relevant rather than leaving old sightings to mislead later drivers. Waze’s police-sighting instructions explain the reporting guidance.
The practical distinction is between an observation and a prediction. Waze’s guidance is to report a sighting that is happening in real time and near the location—not to submit a guess, repeat something heard earlier, or leave an old report in place as if it were current. When a sighting is no longer there, the “Not there” option gives users a way to mark that status. This does not turn reports into a guarantee; it is a way to keep time-sensitive information from being presented as current after it has gone stale.
For your own trip, there is no need to submit a report while driving. Keep your focus on the road; if you have relevant information to report, handle it only when safely stopped. A report should describe a real-time observation, not a guess about what may be ahead.

Before setting off
- While parked, check the camera settings under Settings > Alerts and reports > Reports > Cameras.
- Choose whether camera information should appear on the map, whether Waze should alert while driving, or both.
- If you use Android Auto or CarPlay, disconnect first, change settings on the phone, then reconnect for the trip.
- Start the route and get familiar with its guidance before moving; do not rely on changing notification settings en route.
Before leaving, it can help to think through the difference between setup and certainty. The setup check confirms your preferences; it does not confirm that Waze knows about every camera, road feature, or current report. Once underway, let route guidance provide context without trying to audit or repair the map from the driver’s seat. If you need to change a setting or address a report, wait until safely stopped.
During the drive
- Follow posted speed limits and road signs whether Waze alerts you or not.
- Treat map markers, voice prompts, and other road alerts as supplementary context.
- Do not interpret silence or a missing marker as proof that a camera, hazard, or road feature is absent.
- Keep attention on the road rather than trying to inspect the map or submit reports while moving.
It is possible to use Waze for navigation while declining to make camera alerts the center of attention. The app can contribute directions and road context, but the driver still needs to notice signs, conditions, and changes in the roadway. If an alert conflicts with what you see on the road, use the actual signs and conditions as the cues for how to drive rather than treating the app as authoritative.

When a report is stale
If you encounter an outdated Waze report, the app provides a Not there option for marking it no longer present. Waze’s reporting advice is to submit sightings only when they are real-time and close to the incident. Treating reports as time-sensitive helps avoid giving later drivers a false impression of current conditions.
For example, a police sighting entered earlier may no longer describe what is happening at that location. Waze’s instructions offer a way to mark a report as no longer present; they do not say that every stale report will be removed automatically or that every report has been independently checked. Keep the scope modest: report only what you actually see in real time, and use the stale-report option when the reported sighting is no longer there.
What Waze alerts should not be used to conclude
- No alert means no camera: Incorrect. Waze may not know about a camera that has not been reported.
- No sound means the map has no camera information: Incorrect. At or below the speed limit, Waze may show the marker without sounding.
- An average-speed-zone alert shows your average speed: Incorrect. Waze says it currently does not calculate or show that figure.
- No crash-history alert means no crash history: Incorrect. Waze says the absence of an alert does not establish that the road lacks crash history.
- A road-feature alert list is exhaustive: Not established. Waze says feature information relies on partner and editor reports.
- A police report is a guarantee of current enforcement activity: Not established. Waze advises reporting real-time sightings and provides a way to mark stale reports as no longer present.
The larger principle applies across these features: Waze reports can be useful when present, but their absence cannot prove that a camera, road feature, crash history, or enforcement sighting is absent. In the same way, a report does not remove the need to assess the actual roadway. Use the app to add context, not to make decisions on the assumption that its database is complete.

Does Waze have an audible speed-camera alert?
Yes. In Settings > Alerts and reports > Reports > Cameras, select the camera alert type and enable Alert while driving for voice and on-screen alerts. Waze may still show a camera marker without sound when you are at or below the speed limit, and unreported cameras may not appear.
Why does Waze show a camera but not make a sound?
Waze says drivers at or under the speed limit may see a speed-camera alert on the map without hearing an alert. Check the settings before your trip, but do not interpret silence as proof that no camera is present.
How do I turn on Waze camera alerts for Android Auto or CarPlay?
Disconnect the phone from Android Auto or CarPlay, change the camera settings on the phone, then use Waze in the car. Waze says the phone settings apply when the app is used in the car. Make changes while parked.
Does Waze show my average speed in an average-speed enforcement zone?
No. Waze says it can provide voice and visual alerts as you approach these zones in countries where they exist, but it currently does not calculate or show your average speed.
Can I rely on Waze to show every camera or police sighting?
No. Camera information depends on partner and map-editor reports, and Waze may not know about an unreported camera. Police reports are time-sensitive community sightings, and available categories vary by country.
What should I do if a Waze police report is no longer accurate?
Waze provides a Not there option to mark a stale sighting as no longer present. Waze advises users to report only real-time sightings close to the incident.
The Bottom Line
Set Waze’s camera map and driving-alert preferences before you leave, and disconnect from Android Auto or CarPlay first if you need to change them. A sound, a marker, or silence cannot guarantee what is or is not ahead: Waze relies on reports, and it may not know about unreported cameras. Follow posted signs and speed limits, keep your attention on the road, and treat every Waze alert as supplementary context.
