Vuls is an agentless vulnerability scanner for Linux and FreeBSD. It compares installed packages, software versions and system information with vulnerability data, without requiring a permanent agent on every server. To scan a Linux host, install Vuls and its vulnerability databases on a scan host, define the target in config.toml, run vuls configtest, then launch a scan in the mode that fits your privileges and network.

Use fast for a broad, low-dependency first pass; use fast-root when you can grant root-level access and need process and update-state checks; and use an offline variant when the target cannot reach the internet. Remote mode pulls data over SSH, local mode runs Vuls on each server, and server mode receives information or results over HTTP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Vuls scans and why the scan mode matters

Vuls is designed to identify vulnerable software on Linux and FreeBSD systems by matching what is installed against vulnerability information. The scanner is agentless: you do not deploy a continuously running Vuls agent to every machine. Instead, a scan host connects to a target, or Vuls runs directly on the target, collects package and system details, and compares them with the vulnerability databases prepared on the scanning side.

The result is an assessment of packages and software that may be affected by known vulnerabilities. It is not a proof that an exploit will succeed, a replacement for configuration review, or a guarantee that every application is covered. The quality of the result depends on the operating-system package data Vuls can read, the vulnerability databases available to it, the privileges granted to the scan, and the release of Vuls you installed.

Choose the mode before writing the configuration. The choice changes whether root is needed, whether target-side dependencies are expected, whether a target needs outside network access, and whether Vuls can inspect running processes that may still be using an old library.

Fast scan

Fast scan mode is documented as requiring no root privilege and no dependencies on the scan target in the fast-scan examples. That makes it a practical first pass across a large fleet or across servers where granting elevated access is difficult. It is especially useful for finding package-level exposure quickly, but it provides less runtime context than a root-level scan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fast-root scan

Fast-root runs with root privilege. The additional access allows checks that depend on privileged commands and can identify processes affected by updates, such as a service that is still running with an old library after the package was replaced. Use it when administrators need deeper update-state and runtime checks and can limit the account’s privileges safely.

Offline variants

Offline is a connectivity option that can be combined with fast or fast-root. Use an offline variant when the target has no internet access or policy prohibits it from reaching external services. The vulnerability data must already be prepared on the scanning side; offline mode does not create or refresh that data.

Deep scan

The current scan documentation describes deep scan as the same as fast-root for now. Treat that as a release-specific statement rather than a permanent promise. Run the behavior checks for the exact Vuls release you installed before building a compliance process around the deep label.

Prepare the scan host and targets

A reliable deployment separates the machine that holds Vuls and its databases from the Linux servers being assessed. The scan host needs enough disk space for vulnerability data and scan output, a network route to each remote target when using SSH, and credentials that match the selected scan mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Vuls and populate vulnerability data

  1. Install Vuls on a controlled Linux machine using the installation method appropriate for the Vuls release and operating system. Confirm that the executable responds to vuls --help and that the subcommands for configuration, scanning and reporting are available.

  2. Populate the vulnerability databases on that machine before the first production scan. Database refreshes are separate from target scanning: a target does not become current merely because a scan was started. Record the database refresh date, the Vuls version and the operating-system metadata used for each assessment.

  3. Create dedicated output locations for results and logs. Keep them on storage with access controls because reports can reveal host names, package versions, kernel information and network details.

  4. For SSH scans, create a scanning account on each target. Prefer a key-based login, restrict the account to the servers that must be assessed, and grant only the sudo commands required by the selected scan mode. Do not begin by distributing an unrestricted administrator key to every host.

Decide how the scanner will reach each server

Connectivity choice Traffic direction Target-side requirement When it fits
Remote mode The scan host connects to the target over SSH. An SSH service, a valid account and any required sudo permissions. Centralized fleet scanning from one controlled machine.
Local mode Vuls executes directly on each target. Vuls and its required local data or access to prepared data on the target. Networks where central SSH fan-out is undesirable or impossible.
Server mode Targets or other clients submit host information or scan results to an HTTP listener. Network access to the listener and controls protecting the endpoint. Push-based collection, segmented networks or environments without SSH access.
Container targets Vuls uses the container mechanism documented for the environment. Access to Docker, LXD or LXC as applicable. Assessing container images or containerized systems in addition to ordinary servers.

Create a Vuls config.toml file

The configuration names each server and supplies the connection details Vuls needs. Keep one clearly identifiable block per target. The following pattern uses SSH keys and fast mode; change the values and scan mode for your environment.

[servers]

[servers.server1]
host = "192.0.2.10"
port = "22"
user = "vuls-scan"
keyPath = "/home/vuls-scan/.ssh/id_ed25519"
scanMode = ["fast"]

[servers.server2]
host = "192.0.2.11"
port = "22"
user = "vuls-scan"
keyPath = "/home/vuls-scan/.ssh/id_ed25519"
scanMode = ["fast-root"]

The server names, such as server1, become the names you pass to the scan command. The host value can be a DNS name or an address reachable from the scan host. Use the SSH port actually exposed by the target rather than assuming the default. Set user to the restricted account and point keyPath to the private key readable by the process that runs Vuls.

Set scanMode to the mode required for that host. Typical values are fast, fast-root and their offline combinations. Because option names and accepted combinations can vary between releases, verify the accepted syntax with the help output and the documentation shipped with the installed version.

Configuration safety checks

Run configtest before scanning

Run the basic validation from the directory containing your configuration, or provide the configuration path using the option supported by your Vuls release:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
vuls configtest

This check catches problems before a long scan begins. Fix every reported issue rather than treating the output as a warning list. If you are using requirements associated with deep or fast-root checks, run the deeper validation as well:

vuls configtest --deep

What to fix when configtest fails

  • SSH connectivity: verify DNS resolution or routing from the scan host, the target port, host-key handling and that the account can log in non-interactively. A key that works in an interactive shell can still fail when its passphrase or a terminal prompt is required.
  • Authentication: check the private-key path, file permissions and the user named in config.toml. Confirm that the key corresponds to an authorized public key on the target.
  • Privilege: for fast-root or deep requirements, verify that the account can obtain the necessary root access without an interactive password prompt. Keep the sudo rule limited to the commands Vuls needs.
  • Dependencies: inspect the target for missing package-management or system-information utilities reported by the test. Fast mode is intended to minimize target dependencies; a root-level mode can require more checks.
  • Configuration syntax: validate quotation marks, section names, ports and the exact spelling of the scan-mode value. A syntactically valid TOML file can still describe a mode unsupported by the installed release.

Run a remote SSH scan

After configtest succeeds, scan one named target first:

vuls scan server1

A single-host run makes it easier to distinguish a target problem from a fleet-wide configuration problem. If that result is usable, scan every server defined in the configuration:

vuls scan

Use the result and log directory options to keep output in predictable locations:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
vuls scan server1 -results-dir /var/lib/vuls/results -log-dir /var/log/vuls

The exact option placement can differ by release, so confirm the syntax with vuls scan --help if the command rejects an option. Preserve the scan timestamp, the configuration, the Vuls version and the vulnerability-database state together. A report is only meaningful when you can explain which database and settings produced it.

What happens during a remote scan

  1. Vuls reads the named target from config.toml.

  2. The scan host opens an SSH connection using the configured host, port, account and key.

  4. The scanner compares the collected versions and system facts with its local vulnerability data.

    Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  5. Raw results and logs are written to the configured directories for later reporting.

The documented command defaults include timeouts such as 300 seconds for general processing and 7200 seconds when scanning all servers. These are command defaults, not a promise that every target will finish in those periods. Large package inventories, slow SSH links, package-manager locks and unresponsive hosts can require different timeout settings in the installed release.

Use fast, fast-root and offline modes deliberately

Mode Privilege Target dependencies Internet approach Coverage and trade-off
Fast No root privilege in the documented fast examples. Designed for no dependencies on the scan target. Suitable for a broad scan when required data is available to the scanner. Low-friction package assessment; less runtime and update-state information.
Fast-root Root access required. Allows privileged process and update checks. Use when the target and policy permit the required access. Deeper runtime context, with greater credential and sudo complexity.
Offline-fast Same privilege profile as fast. Same low-dependency objective, with data prepared in advance. Target can remain without internet access. Useful for isolated servers; database freshness must be managed on the scan side.
Offline-fast-root Root access required. Privileged checks plus prepared vulnerability data. For isolated targets that still need runtime/update checks. Most capable constrained-network option, but also the most demanding operationally.
Deep Current documentation describes it as equivalent to fast-root. Verify requirements for the installed release. Follow the same database and network assumptions as the selected implementation. Do not assume the equivalence will remain unchanged across releases.

“Offline” refers to how vulnerability data and target connectivity are handled; it does not mean that Vuls can scan without any data. Refresh the databases on a connected, controlled system, transfer them through your approved process, and record the database version or timestamp used for the isolated scan.

Scan without central SSH: local mode

Local mode executes Vuls on each target instead of having one scanner connect to every server. It is useful when inbound SSH from a central scan host is prohibited, when a segmented network makes pull-based scanning impractical, or when the system owner wants the scan to run under local operational controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the Vuls executable and the required vulnerability data on the target, or make the approved prepared data available locally.

  2. Place the target’s local configuration and output directories under appropriate ownership and permissions.

  3. Run the same mode that matches the target’s privilege and network constraints, using the command syntax supported by the installed release.

  4. Export the resulting report or result files to a central location through an approved transfer process. Treat those files as sensitive host inventory.

    Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local mode removes the central SSH fan-out; it does not remove the need to manage versions, database freshness, output retention and permissions on every target.

Use server mode when targets cannot be reached by SSH

Server mode provides an HTTP listener that accepts submitted host information or scan results. The documentation’s default listener is localhost:5515, which keeps the service local to the machine unless you deliberately bind it to another address.

vuls server -listen host:port -to-localfile

The -to-localfile option makes the server write received information or results to local files. A client or scan process can then submit results over HTTP:

vuls report -to-http

Use the exact endpoint and additional options required by your release. The important distinction is the network direction: instead of a scanner pulling through SSH, an allowed client pushes information or results to the Vuls service. This is the option to consider when the answer to “Can Vuls scan without SSH?” is yes, but only if you can run the client-side Vuls process and provide a protected HTTP route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect the server endpoint

Address container targets when needed

Vuls documentation also describes mechanisms for addressing Docker, LXD and LXC targets. Container assessment has different boundaries from a conventional server scan: an image’s package inventory, a running container’s filesystem and the host kernel are not interchangeable evidence. Select the mechanism that matches what you need to assess and keep the result labeled as a container or host assessment.

Do not infer that a clean container result proves the underlying host is clean, or that a host result covers every package embedded in an image. Run the relevant target type explicitly and retain the target identity with the report.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Read and preserve scan results

Vuls writes raw results and diagnostic logs to its result and log directories. Use those files as the audit trail and use the Vuls reporting tools to render findings in the formats your release supports. Because reporting options can change, inspect the installed command’s help output rather than copying flags from a different release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify in a report

  • Target identity: confirm that the host name or address belongs to the intended server and that a reused configuration name has not pointed at a replacement machine.
  • Scan mode: record whether the result came from fast, fast-root or an offline variant. A missing root check can explain why a process-related finding was not identified.
  • Package and version: verify the installed version, distribution and architecture before assigning remediation. Package names can differ between distributions.
  • Vulnerability data date: compare the report with the database state used at scan time. A later database refresh can add findings without any package change.
  • Runtime implications: when a finding indicates that a running process may still use an outdated library, schedule a service restart or reboot according to the system owner’s change procedure.
  • Errors and omissions: read the log alongside the report. A successful command can still contain a target-level collection error that limits coverage.

Make results repeatable

Store the report, raw result, log, configuration, Vuls version and vulnerability-database identifier together. Use a consistent naming scheme containing the target and UTC scan timestamp. Version the configuration and database-transfer records. During remediation reviews, this lets you distinguish a fixed package, a changed scan mode, a newly refreshed database and a changed target from one another.

Troubleshoot common failure patterns

Symptom Likely cause Corrective action
Connection refused or timed out Wrong host or port, firewall policy, route failure or stopped SSH service. Test reachability from the scan host, verify the configured port and check the target’s network controls.
Permission denied during login Wrong user, key path, key permissions or missing authorized key. Test non-interactive key login as the same operating-system account that runs Vuls; correct the key and account mapping.
Fast-root or deep validation fails Missing root access, an interactive sudo prompt or an unavailable privileged command. Apply a narrowly scoped sudo rule, remove interactive prompts and install only the required target utilities.
Scan completes with little or no package data Unsupported target packaging, a collection command failure or a target-side dependency problem. Read the log, check the target’s package manager and compare the result with a supported scan mode.
Offline scan reports stale or missing vulnerabilities Databases were not refreshed or transferred to the scanning environment. Refresh the databases on an approved connected system, transfer them through the controlled process and record their timestamp.
Report cannot be reproduced Configuration, Vuls version or database state changed after the original scan. Restore the original inputs or retain all three as part of the scan record.
HTTP submission fails in server mode Listener bound only to localhost, blocked route, wrong endpoint or rejected request format. Check the listener address, firewall path and client options; keep the listener internal while testing.

Operational practices for a dependable Vuls program

Separate discovery from remediation

Use the first fast scan to establish coverage, then schedule fast-root scans for systems where process state affects the decision. A vulnerability finding identifies a package or software condition; the server owner still has to decide whether to update, restart, isolate or accept the risk.

Refresh data on a defined schedule

Vulnerability databases age independently of installed packages. Define how often the connected scan environment refreshes them and how quickly offline environments receive an approved copy. Record failed refreshes instead of silently scanning with an unknown database age.

Keep privileges narrow

Fast mode is useful partly because it avoids root on the target. When fast-root is justified, create a dedicated account and a narrowly scoped sudo policy. Review the policy whenever the Vuls release or operating-system requirements change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect sensitive outputs

Results and logs can reveal the software inventory and topology of production systems. Restrict read access, encrypt transfers, protect server-mode listeners and delete old data according to your security-retention policy.

Test upgrades before fleet scans

Run configtest and a named-target scan after upgrading Vuls, changing the database process or altering sudo rules. Compare the new result with the previous one while keeping the scan mode and database timestamps visible. This avoids treating a tooling change as a sudden fleet-wide vulnerability change.

A concise first-run checklist
