To start a spoken conversation, open ChatGPT and select the Voice icon, open Claude and select its sound-wave icon, or—in the currently documented setup—open the Gemini app on an Android phone or tablet and tap Live or swipe left. Microphone permission may be required. The important difference is platform availability: ChatGPT documents voice on web and mobile, Claude documents voice on web, desktop, and mobile, and Gemini Live is not available in the Gemini web app.

Voice features, account access, and menus can change. The steps below reflect the vendors’ documentation available as of October 13, 2026; Google says Gemini Live updates roll out gradually, so some options may not yet appear for every user. ChatGPT voice features and limits can also depend on account availability, while Claude voice counts toward the regular usage limits for your plan.

The three services also differ in how a conversation flows. ChatGPT Live can listen and speak at the same time; Claude offers hands-free and push-to-talk modes; Gemini Live supports interruption and lets you mute or put a session on hold. If your main concern is a desktop workflow, shared-screen features, language, or data retention, check those differences before choosing a starting point.

How do I turn on voice mode?

ChatGPT: start Voice on mobile or web

  1. On iOS or Android: Open a chat in the ChatGPT app and select the Voice icon in the message bar. If prompted, allow microphone access. If this is your first voice session, choose a voice, then speak.
  2. On the web: Go to ChatGPT.com, open a chat, and select the Voice icon in the prompt window. Allow the browser to use your microphone if asked, then speak.
  3. To review voice choices: Open Settings → Voice. Depending on your account, the available choices may include Live, Advanced, and Standard.

Voice works within a chat, so you can continue the conversation in text instead of starting over. OpenAI describes Live as its natural back-and-forth option: it can listen and speak at the same time, and can work with text and images in the same chat. Features depend on account availability. The current help guidance says Live does not support video or screen sharing; supported mobile video or screen-sharing capabilities may instead be available with Advanced.

  • Hear and be heard with Clear Calling; it helps block background noise, so wind, external chatter, or other distractions in your environment won’t interrupt your conversations[2]

That distinction matters if you are choosing a mode for a particular task. Live is the documented option for a more continuous spoken exchange and for using text and images together in a chat. Do not assume it can see a live camera feed or your screen: OpenAI’s current guidance places supported mobile video and screen sharing with Advanced, and feature availability can vary by account. Look at the options available in your own Settings rather than assuming every account has the same set.

Claude: start voice on mobile, desktop, or web

  1. On the web or desktop app: Start a chat and select the sound-wave symbol at the lower right.
  2. On iOS or Android: Open the Claude app and tap the sound-wave icon beside the microphone in the input field.
  3. Choose a voice if prompted, then speak. You can switch between voice and text in the same conversation.

Anthropic describes voice mode as a beta feature available on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans across Claude Mobile, Claude Desktop, and the web. Its Help Center, updated July 23, 2026, says the feature is built to work best from a phone. Voice uses the same Claude models available to you in text chat and counts toward the regular usage limits for your plan.

Claude offers two ways to take turns. Hands-free listens continuously and responds when it detects a natural pause. Push-to-talk is the suggested option when the room is noisy or other people may be speaking, since continuous listening may pick up nearby speech. You can interrupt Claude by speaking again. If you need a quieter, more controlled exchange, push-to-talk gives you a way to decide when to speak rather than relying on pauses alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switching between voice and text does not require starting a fresh conversation: Claude retains the context in that chat. Connected tools may also be used in voice mode, including examples such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Slack, but access depends on plan and permissions. The feature’s beta status is worth keeping in mind; the listed plans and platforms establish where it is offered, not that every connected tool or control will be enabled for every user.

Gemini Live: start on an Android phone or tablet

  1. Make sure you have an Android phone or tablet, the Gemini mobile app or Gemini set as your mobile assistant, a signed-in eligible account, and the latest Google app.
  2. Open Gemini and tap Live, or swipe left. Complete any first-use prompts, then talk.
  3. As another documented start method, say “Hey Google, let’s talk Live” or “Hey Google, let’s talk.” Google also documents starting a Live conversation on Pixel Buds with “Hey Google, let’s talk.” Earbuds are optional; check compatibility for a specific device before relying on it.

Google’s current instructions require a mobile Android setup. Gemini Live is not available in the Gemini web app or Gemini in Google Messages. Google says availability updates roll out gradually, so an eligible user may not see every feature yet.

During a Live conversation, you can interrupt Gemini, put the session on hold, or mute the microphone. A setting controls whether interruption is on or off. You can end the session to review its transcript and move between Live and text chat. If you are trying to use a feature described in Google’s instructions but do not see it, check that the Google app is current, that you are signed in to an eligible account, and that the feature has reached your account. Gradual rollout means that having the required device does not necessarily mean every control is immediately available.

Gemini Live’s Android instructions also describe captions, camera or video streaming, screen sharing, and Connected Apps. These features are subject to permissions, account type, settings, and gradual availability. When screen sharing is enabled, the full screen is shared—not only the app or window you have in mind. Review what is visible on your screen before you start, and stop sharing when you no longer want the screen included.

Can I use voice mode on desktop?

Yes for ChatGPT and Claude, according to the current product documentation: ChatGPT Voice is documented on ChatGPT.com, and Claude voice mode is documented on Claude Desktop and the web. Claude’s web and desktop entry point is the sound-wave symbol at the lower right of a new chat.

Do not treat Gemini Live as a desktop voice feature. Google’s instructions currently describe it for Android phones and tablets and explicitly say it is unavailable in the Gemini web app. A browser microphone working for another service does not make Gemini Live available there. Google also says Gemini Live is unavailable in Gemini in Google Messages, so a signed-in Google account alone is not enough to establish that the feature is available in a particular app or on a particular device.

If your priority is speaking from a computer, the documented choices here are ChatGPT on the web or Claude on the web or desktop. If you specifically want Gemini Live, plan around the Android mobile app or Gemini as the mobile assistant. Google documents Pixel Buds as an optional way to start a Live chat, but not as a requirement; check compatibility for the particular accessory before purchasing or relying on it.

How do voice conversations handle turn-taking and shared context?

Service How you control the exchange Context and related features
ChatGPT Live can listen and speak at the same time for a more continuous exchange. Voice remains within a chat and can work alongside text and images. Live does not support video or screen sharing; supported mobile video or screen-sharing features may be available with Advanced, depending on account access.
Claude Hands-free listens continuously and responds to natural pauses. Push-to-talk is the suggested choice in noisy places or when other people may be speaking. You can interrupt by speaking again. You can move between voice and text in the same conversation without losing its context. Connected tools such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Slack may be available in voice mode, subject to plan and permissions.
Gemini Live You can interrupt Gemini. A setting controls whether interruption is on or off; you can also put a session on hold or mute the microphone. You can move between Live and text chat, and end a session to review its transcript. Android instructions also describe captions, camera/video streaming, screen sharing, and Connected Apps, subject to permissions, account type, settings, and gradual rollout.

For Gemini screen sharing, the full screen is shared. Close or hide anything you do not want included and inspect what is visible before starting. Camera, screen-sharing, and Connected Apps controls are not universal across accounts or devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The main practical distinction is how much control you want over each turn. ChatGPT Live is described as able to listen and speak at the same time, while Claude’s hands-free mode waits for natural pauses and its push-to-talk option gives you more control in a noisy environment. Gemini Live allows interruption, with a setting for whether interruption is enabled. Those are different interaction patterns, not a guarantee that one service will be more accurate or faster for your particular conversation.

All three let a user carry context between spoken and written interaction in some form: ChatGPT voice works within a chat, Claude keeps the same conversation context when you switch to text, and Gemini lets you move between Live and text chat. Gemini’s session can be ended to review a transcript. These options can be useful when you want to speak first and then inspect or continue the discussion in text, but they do not make the resulting transcript a perfect record of every spoken word.

How do I change the voice language?

ChatGPT

Open Settings → Voice and choose a preferred speech language. OpenAI says selecting a language may help recognition. You can also ask ChatGPT to speak another language during a voice conversation.

  • Pair the Pixel Buds A-Series with your Pixel or any Android device in just one tap[3]; or quickly and easily connect to iOS or any other Bluetooth 4.0 plus device[4].

Language selection can help speech recognition, but it is not a guarantee that every utterance will be transcribed exactly as spoken. OpenAI notes that the transcript may differ, particularly when people talk over one another, there is background noise, or the conversation is fast. If recognition is going wrong, check the preferred speech language and reduce competing noise where possible.

Claude

Claude’s voice language is set separately from the app’s display language. Changing the language used for menus does not itself set the voice language. Non-English voice support is beta, so availability and behavior may differ from English. Check the voice-specific setting as well as the language of the app if you want the spoken interaction to use a particular language.

Gemini

Gemini voice choices vary by language. Google’s instructions do not establish one voice choice that is available in every language or account; check the options shown in your app. Language availability, like other Gemini Live capabilities, may vary as updates roll out gradually.

Are voice chats saved, and what happens to audio?

Voice data is not handled identically across the three services. In particular, a saved text transcript and an audio recording are different kinds of data. Review the relevant account controls before sharing sensitive information. A setting that affects transcripts or activity should not automatically be assumed to change the treatment of every audio, video, or shared-screen file.

ChatGPT

OpenAI says Live and Advanced audio clips are stored with the chat transcript for 30 days. If you delete the chat, associated clips are deleted within 30 days, subject to stated safety, legal, or training exceptions. Standard audio is deleted after transcription unless you chose to share it. OpenAI distinguishes sharing audio or video clips from the use of transcripts and other files under account settings, so check those settings rather than assuming one choice controls every data type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 30-day detail applies to the documented Live and Advanced audio clips; it should not be generalized to Standard audio, which OpenAI says is deleted after transcription unless the user chose to share it. Likewise, deleting a chat is described as causing associated clips to be deleted within 30 days, with exceptions. If data handling is important to your decision, identify which voice mode you are using and check the account settings that apply to transcripts, clips, and other files.

Claude

Anthropic says textual transcripts are saved in chat history like text conversations. Its reviewed voice help page does not specify an audio-recording retention period; there is not enough information in that guidance to state one. The clear point is that the text conversation is saved in chat history, so do not assume voice mode means the words exchanged are absent from your chat record.

Gemini Live

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, says collected information can include Gemini Live transcripts and recordings, including audio and any video or screen content shared during a session. With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train AI models unless you send feedback. Google says those chats are still saved for 72 hours to respond and protect users.

The same Privacy Hub separately says human-reviewed chats are retained for up to three years, and that Gemini Live audio and video or screenshares are not used to improve Google services by default. These statements are not a blanket guarantee that no data is retained or reviewed: the setting, the type of data, and stated exceptions matter. In particular, Keep Activity off does not mean the session is never stored; Google says chats remain saved for 72 hours for response and user protection.

Before using any assistant for sensitive material, consider what you are about to say or show, which mode is active, and which account settings apply. This is especially important for Gemini screen sharing, because the entire screen is shared, and for any service where voice activity may be stored with a transcript or chat history. The services describe different handling for transcripts and recordings, so avoid treating “voice chat” as one uniform data category.

What should I check if voice mode does not work?

  • The Voice or Live button is missing: Confirm that you are using a documented platform for that service. Gemini Live is currently an Android mobile feature, while ChatGPT Voice and Claude voice are documented on desktop or web as well as mobile.
  • The service cannot hear you: Check that microphone access is allowed in the app or browser. For a browser, review the site’s microphone permission in the browser settings; for a phone, review the app’s microphone permission in the device settings.
  • A Gemini feature or control is absent: Confirm the Android app and Google app are current and that you are signed in to an eligible account. Google releases availability updates gradually, so a control may not have reached your account.
  • Voice recognition is inaccurate: Reduce background noise, speak clearly, and use the service’s language controls where available. For Claude, try push-to-talk if continuous listening is picking up nearby speakers. ChatGPT notes that transcripts can differ from what was said, particularly with overlapping speech, noise, or fast conversation.
  • You want to avoid an accidental screen share: Before enabling Gemini screen sharing, inspect the entire screen because the full screen is shared.

For a first-time setup, work through the requirements in order: use the correct app or platform, confirm that the relevant feature is available to your account, grant microphone access, and then look for the service’s voice control. For Gemini, the documented mobile setup also requires an eligible signed-in account and the latest Google app. If the control still does not appear, gradual availability may be the reason rather than a microphone problem.

When the assistant seems to cut in or mistake nearby speech, the interaction mode can matter. In Claude, try push-to-talk instead of hands-free when other people are talking. In Gemini, check whether interruption is enabled or disabled as you prefer. For ChatGPT, check the language setting and remember that overlapping speech, noise, and fast conversation can make a transcript differ from what was said.

Which service should you use?

Choose based on the device and interaction you need, not on an unsupported claim that one assistant is universally better. ChatGPT is a fit if you want documented web or mobile voice and, where available, a Live exchange that can combine speech with text and images. Claude is the documented option among these three for voice on desktop, web, and mobile, with a choice between hands-free and push-to-talk. Gemini Live is the mobile Android route in Google’s current guidance, with interruption controls and documented camera and screen-sharing options subject to rollout and permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider the practical trade-offs before starting. A computer user can choose ChatGPT on the web or Claude on web or desktop; Gemini Live’s current instructions are for Android phones and tablets. Someone who wants explicit push-to-talk has that documented choice in Claude. Someone who wants to use camera or screen-sharing controls should check the service and mode carefully: ChatGPT Live does not support video or screen sharing, while supported mobile capabilities may be available with Advanced; Gemini’s documented sharing controls are Android features and share the full screen. Claude connected tools and Gemini Connected Apps also depend on plan, permissions, account type, and settings rather than being universal.

Language and data handling may decide the choice as much as platform does. ChatGPT provides a preferred speech-language setting; Claude separates voice language from display language and labels non-English voice support beta; Gemini voice choices vary by language. For saved data, ChatGPT documents 30-day storage for Live and Advanced clips, Claude says text transcripts go into chat history, and Google describes Gemini Live transcripts and recordings alongside activity-dependent controls. These are not interchangeable policies, so review the service-specific details if retention matters to you.

OpenAI says more than 150 million people each week talk to ChatGPT using features such as Voice and Dictation. That is a combined figure for those features, not a Voice-only usage statistic, and it does not establish that ChatGPT is best for every reader. All three can make mistakes. OpenAI specifically advises checking important answers, especially information that depends on date, time, or location. Treat voice as a way to interact, not as a guarantee that an answer is correct.
