To use voice commands, press and hold the Google Assistant/Mic button on the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, speak your request, then release the button. You do not need to say “Hey Google.” Try requests such as What should I watch?, Find funny movies, or Show me sci-fi adventure TV shows.
The remote microphone is designed for spoken searches and Google Assistant questions without any additional speaker or display. Once the remote is paired and Google Assistant setup is complete on the TV, the process takes only a few seconds.
What you need
This procedure uses the microphone built into the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. It applies to Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV devices. The Streamer connects to a TV or other display through an HDMI input. See Google’s device and remote documentation for compatibility details: Meet the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote and Meet Google TV Streamer (4K).

You do not need a separate Google Home speaker or smart display to speak into the remote. The remote’s own microphone handles the request. A separate hands-free assistant setup is a different way to control a TV and is not required for this method; Google describes that option separately in Use your voice assistant on your TV with Chromecast and Google TV Streamer.
Pair the remote and finish TV setup first
The remote normally pairs automatically while you set up the Streamer. Google’s setup flow also includes setting up Google Assistant on the TV. Voice commands depend on that completed connection: the remote must be communicating with the Streamer, and the TV must have finished its Assistant setup.
If the television displays Start pairing, use this procedure:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Hold the Back and Home buttons on the remote at the same time.
- Keep holding them until the remote light pulses.
- Continue the on-screen setup, including the Google Assistant setup step.
Google documents these pairing steps in Set up Google TV Streamer (4K) and Voice Remote. Voice input will not work if the remote has not completed pairing with the Streamer, so pairing is the first thing to check when a new or replacement remote is not responding.
Remote software updates are applied automatically while the remote is paired, according to Google’s setup and remote help. You do not have to initiate a separate update before trying a voice search.
Find the Assistant/Mic button
Hold the microphone button rather than tapping it. In Google’s text description of the remote, the Assistant/Mic button is the second button in the left column, below Back and above Mute. It is the button you use to start spoken searches and questions.
The location matters because several nearby buttons have unrelated jobs. Back returns to a previous screen, Mute silences supported audio equipment, and the directional pad navigates menus. Pressing one of those controls will not start voice input.

Google’s official instruction is explicit: When using the Google TV Remote, you don’t need to say ‘Hey Google’ before you talk to Google Assistant.
Press and hold the button first, speak while holding it, and release when you finish. Saying the wake phrase is unnecessary for this button-based method.
Talk to Google in three steps
- Press and hold the Assistant/Mic button on the remote.
- Speak your question or command in a normal voice while the button remains held. Say the words you want Google TV to interpret, such as a recommendation request, a movie search, or a show category.
- Release the button when you have finished speaking and wait for the result on the TV.
The important detail is the hold action. A quick tap does not follow Google’s documented procedure for talking to Assistant through the remote. Start speaking only after the button is held, keep it held for the whole request, and let go when the sentence is complete.
You do not need to add a wake phrase before the request. The button press tells the remote that the following speech is intended for Assistant. You also do not need to repeat the command several times or use special syntax; Google’s examples use ordinary conversational language.
If you change your mind before finishing, release the button without adding another command. To try a different search, press and hold again and speak the new request. The microphone action begins a new spoken request each time.

Voice commands to try
Google’s examples focus on finding something to watch. Use these as starting phrases rather than as a promise that every wording will behave identically in every app or region.
| Goal | Example to say while holding the button | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Get a recommendation | What should I watch? |
Ask Google TV for viewing suggestions. |
| Search by genre or description | Find funny movies |
Look for movies matching a genre or mood. |
| Browse a specific type of show | Show me sci-fi adventure TV shows |
Browse television results matching the description. |
These phrases illustrate three useful patterns: asking for a recommendation, describing a type of movie, and combining genres or characteristics for a television search. You can speak the examples exactly as written or use similarly natural wording, but the available results depend on the services and titles available to your Google TV setup.
Google TV Assistant can answer questions and complete tasks, but the pages that document this remote do not promise that every Assistant capability works in every app or country. Treat the quoted examples as supported starting points, not as a guarantee of a particular title, service, ranking, or playback action.
What happens after you speak
After you release the button, Google TV processes the spoken request and displays the response or matching content on the connected screen. A recommendation request can lead to viewing suggestions; a genre or description request can lead to a list of matching movies or shows. If the result is a list, use the remote’s directional controls to move through it and select an item as usual.
Voice input starts the search or question, but it does not replace every navigation or playback control on the remote. You may still need the directional pad, Select button, Back button, play controls, or other on-screen controls to open a result, move between screens, or control playback.
Search results can also vary according to the apps installed on the device, the services available in your country, and the language selected for Google Assistant. A phrase that returns several choices for one account or region may return fewer choices elsewhere without indicating that the microphone is defective.
Supported languages and regional limits
Google’s Google TV Assistant help page lists these supported languages for Google TV: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Hindi, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish. The list is published in Do more with Google Assistant on Google TV.
Choose a language that Google TV and your household can use consistently. If you speak a language that is not selected or supported for your device and region, recognition and results may not work as expected. The presence of a language on Google’s list also does not mean that every Assistant feature is available in every country.
Language support does not mean that every Assistant feature, streaming service, title, or result is available in every country. Google warns that features and services can vary by region. If a phrase works differently from the examples, the limitation may be related to the selected language, country, app, or service rather than the button itself.
For the same reason, avoid treating one successful search as a guarantee that every title is indexed or playable. Google can show a match while the associated service requires an account, a subscription, or availability in your location. The remote starts the request; it does not bypass a service’s access requirements.
Remote voice search is separate from power and volume control
The microphone starts spoken searches and Assistant requests. Power, volume, and input buttons perform separate functions and may be configured to control a television, receiver, or soundbar. Their settings are under Settings > Remotes & Accessories and can vary by device. Those controls are not prerequisites for using the microphone button.

For example, a remote can successfully send a voice search even if its power or volume controls have not been configured for a particular soundbar. Conversely, configuring those controls does not activate voice search or change how you hold the Assistant/Mic button.

For configuration details about those other buttons, see Google’s guide, Set up volume, power and input control on your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. Changing those settings will not turn voice search on or off.
Remote button versus hands-free speaker commands
There are two different voice-control arrangements that can involve a Google TV device. With the remote method covered here, you physically press and hold the Assistant/Mic button and speak into the microphone in the remote. It works with the paired remote and does not require another Google device in the room.
A hands-free arrangement uses a separate Google Home or Nest speaker or display and its own setup. That is a different workflow, with different hardware and availability considerations. Do not wait for a speaker to hear the request when you are using the remote; hold the remote button and speak directly toward the remote.
The remote approach is useful when you want a private, deliberate search from the viewing position. It also keeps the procedure simple: pair the remote, complete TV Assistant setup, hold the button, speak, and release. A speaker or display is an optional adjacent setup, not a requirement or prerequisite.

Google’s published instructions do not provide a complete microphone-failure checklist. Start with the checks that are directly tied to the documented setup:
- Confirm that the remote is paired. If the TV is showing Start pairing, hold Back and Home until the remote light pulses, then complete setup.
- Confirm that Google Assistant setup on the TV was completed.
- Press and hold the Assistant/Mic button while speaking; do not rely on a quick tap.
- Make sure you are using the Assistant/Mic button in the documented position: second in the left column, below Back and above Mute.
- Try one of Google’s documented examples, such as
What should I watch?, so you can distinguish a button or setup issue from an unusual search phrase.
Keep the diagnosis limited to these documented checks. Do not assume that changing power, volume, or input settings will repair the microphone; those controls are separate. Likewise, a separate Google Home speaker is not a required workaround for a remote that has not been paired.
Google says remote software updates apply automatically while the remote is paired. If pairing and Assistant setup are complete but the microphone still does not respond, use Google’s current device-support instructions rather than treating an unverified troubleshooting step as an official fix. The pairing and setup procedure is documented in Set up Google TV Streamer (4K) and Voice Remote.
Do you need a replacement remote?
No. If your existing Google TV Streamer Voice Remote is paired and working, it already contains the microphone needed for these commands. Buying another remote is not part of the normal setup and adds cost without adding a required voice feature.
A replacement remote is relevant only if the original is lost or damaged, or if you otherwise need a compatible unit. Google’s remote guide identifies the compatible voice remote and its use with Google TV Streamer (4K) and Chromecast with Google TV: Meet the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. Check compatibility before purchasing; a generic remote is not automatically equivalent to the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote.
Retail price and availability can vary, so there is no required purchase cost for someone who already has the supplied, functioning remote. The least expensive path is simply to pair and use the remote you have.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Tapping instead of holding: The documented action is press and hold while speaking, then release.
- Adding “Hey Google”: The remote button already starts the Assistant interaction; no wake phrase is needed.
- Speaking to the television: Speak into the remote’s microphone, not toward a separate speaker you do not have.
- Using the wrong button: Locate Assistant/Mic below Back and above Mute in the left column.
- Skipping setup: Pair the remote and complete Google Assistant setup on the TV before testing voice input.
- Expecting voice input to replace navigation: Use the directional controls and Select button to open and browse results after the search.
- Assuming every result is universal: Language, country, app, service, and title availability can change what Google TV returns.
- Changing device-control settings first: Power, volume, and input configuration is separate from microphone use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to say “Hey Google” to use the remote microphone?
No. Press and hold the Assistant/Mic button, speak your request, and release it. Google TV Help explicitly says the wake phrase is not needed when using the Google TV Remote.
Should I tap or hold the Assistant/Mic button?
Hold it while you speak. A quick tap does not follow Google’s documented procedure. Release the button after you finish the request.
Where is the voice button on the Google TV Streamer remote?
It is the second button in the left column, below Back and above Mute. Google describes it as the Assistant/Mic button.
Do I need a Google Home or Nest speaker?
No. The remote has its own microphone. A Google Home or Nest speaker or display is a separate hands-free setup and is not required for remote voice commands.
What can I say to the remote?
Start with Google’s documented examples: “What should I watch?”, “Find funny movies,” and “Show me sci-fi adventure TV shows.” These cover recommendations, genre or description searches, and browsing a type of show.
Why is the remote not responding to my voice?
Confirm that it is paired, complete the Google Assistant setup on the TV, and press and hold the correct button while speaking. If the TV shows “Start pairing,” hold Back and Home until the remote light pulses, then finish setup.
