The safe way to use video glasses outdoors is to treat the display, camera, audio and notifications as optional tools—not as something to watch while moving. Keep your eyes and attention on the route, stop in a safe place before checking visual information or changing settings, and disable electronic features whenever a situation demands full attention. Learn the controls before leaving, take regular breaks, stop if you feel unwell, and respect the privacy of people who may be recorded.
Why video glasses can make walking less safe
Video glasses combine several attention-demanding functions in one device: a see-through or in-lens display, camera, speakers, microphones, notifications, augmented-reality effects and touch or voice controls. Each feature can draw attention away from the physical environment. Snap’s Spectacles safety guidance states that the camera, display, AR effects, audio, notifications, LED lights and other features may distract users and increase the time needed to react to hazards. Its warning applies even when a user intends only to glance briefly.
A delayed reaction can matter when a surface changes, an obstacle appears, another pedestrian moves across the route, or a vehicle approaches. The available manufacturer guidance identifies distraction as a recognized risk, but it does not quantify collision probability or prove that a particular way of interacting is safe. Treat every visual check or control interaction as a task that should happen while stationary whenever possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Ray-Ban manual cited for this guidance similarly tells users to pay attention to surroundings, signage and obstacles and to turn electronic features off in situations requiring full attention. That manual is from 2021, so it should not be assumed to describe every later model. Always read the current manual for your exact glasses.

Set up the glasses before you leave
Preparation prevents the most dangerous form of interaction: trying to learn controls while walking. Complete the following steps at home or in another controlled location.
- Read the current model manual. Identify the manufacturer’s warnings about walking, displays, cameras, audio, breaks, discomfort and privacy. Instructions differ between models and can change with firmware updates.
- Practice pausing or disabling the display. Find the physical button, touch gesture, voice command or phone setting that stops visual overlays. Repeat the action until you can perform it without looking at a phone or the glasses.
- Learn how to mute audio and notifications. Configure a mode that silences alerts and spoken prompts. Confirm how to restore normal audio later without studying a menu in motion.
- Learn the camera control and indicator. Know exactly how capture starts and stops, what light or sound signals recording, and how to cancel an accidental capture.
- Fit and clean the glasses. A loose frame, dirty lens or poor adjustment can make you look down, touch the device repeatedly or miss peripheral information. Make adjustments while stationary.
- Charge them and test the phone connection. A low battery or failed connection can trigger repeated prompts or tempt you to troubleshoot while walking. Resolve pairing and update issues before departure.
- Choose a low-distraction configuration. Turn off nonessential effects, automatic alerts and any feature that competes with environmental awareness. Leave only the functions you genuinely need.
These steps are practical precautions derived from the manufacturers’ instructions to avoid distraction and keep attention on surroundings. They are not a guarantee that a particular configuration is safe in every environment.
Use a simple rule while moving: environment first
When your feet are moving, your primary task is observing the route. Keep the display out of your attention and avoid manipulating the glasses. Do not stare at an overlay, read a message, browse a menu, answer a call or activate an effect while continuing forward.

| Situation | Safer action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven pavement, steps or a curb | Pause the display and keep both visual attention and hands available for the route. | Changes in elevation and footing leave less time to notice a hazard. |
| Crossing a road or driveway | Turn off visual and audio features that could compete with traffic observation; cross only after a full visual check. | Electronic prompts are not a substitute for seeing vehicles, cyclists and signals. |
| Approaching a crowd or doorway | Stop interacting and scan people’s movement and available space. | Human movement is unpredictable, and stopping an interaction reduces divided attention. |
| Reading a map or notification | Move to a safe stationary position before viewing it. | A visual check can draw your eyes away from obstacles and signage. |
| Low light, glare or bad weather | Disable nonessential overlays and rely on ordinary environmental cues; stop if vision is impaired. | Added graphics or reflections can make important real-world details harder to notice. |
Walking navigation is helpful information, not a safety system
Meta announced visual turn-by-turn walking directions for Ray-Ban Display, with availability described as a beta rollout in select cities in its 2025 announcement. That announcement establishes that a walking-navigation feature exists for the product and locations included in the rollout. It does not establish that looking at the display while walking is safe.
Use navigation as a prompt to decide where to go, not as permission to watch the lens continuously. Before starting, review the route while stationary. During the walk, keep the display inactive or outside your attention whenever the path is complex. If a direction is unclear, stop somewhere safe, orient yourself using signs and the surrounding street layout, then continue.
Recommended Free Tools
Navigation data can also be incomplete, delayed or wrong for a specific entrance, construction zone or private path. Continue to observe ordinary signs, crossings, barriers and the behavior of other road users. A route cue cannot detect every physical hazard, and it cannot replace your judgment.
Control displays, audio and notifications
Displays
A display can be distracting even when it is transparent or placed at the edge of your view. Bright text, arrows, animations and alerts encourage repeated glances. Set the least intrusive display mode available and disable it entirely for demanding parts of a route. Do not assume that a quick glance is harmless; the safety guidance specifically warns that displays can increase reaction time.
Audio
Audio prompts and calls can mask footsteps, bicycles, horns, announcements or a companion’s warning. If your model allows independent volume control, keep it low enough to hear the environment. Mute audio when approaching traffic, navigating a crowded area or entering a place where announcements matter. If you cannot hear ordinary surroundings clearly, stop the audio feature.

Notifications and effects
Batch or silence notifications before leaving. A vibration, chime or visual effect can create an automatic urge to check the glasses. Turn off AR effects and nonessential alerts when you need sustained environmental attention. Configure the device before walking rather than reaching for a phone to change settings mid-route.
What to do when you need to interact
- Recognize the need early. If you need directions, a message, a setting or a call, decide to stop before the situation becomes urgent.
- Move to a stable position. Choose a place away from the curb, traffic lanes, stairs, platform edges, cyclists’ paths and narrow doorways. Avoid stopping where you obstruct other pedestrians.
- Secure your attention. Look around, confirm that you are not creating a hazard, and then use the control.
- Complete one task. Read the direction or change the setting; do not continue browsing unrelated notifications.
- Restore an outdoor-safe mode. Pause the display, mute unnecessary audio or close the camera function before moving again.
- Recheck the route. Look at the physical path, signs and nearby people before taking your next step.
Voice control does not automatically make interaction safe. Speaking a command may be convenient, but listening for a response or waiting for a confirmation can still divide attention. Use voice commands only when you can keep watching the environment and the command does not require a visual check.
Camera use and other people’s privacy
Camera-equipped glasses create a separate responsibility: people nearby may not realize that capture is possible. Meta’s responsible-use guidance says that users who want to capture a photo or video should ask permission from people around them. It also advises avoiding sensitive locations and places where privacy is expected.
Do not treat a recording light, sound or other indicator as consent. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner warns that discreet indicators may be missed. A person who fails to notice an indicator has not necessarily agreed to be recorded. Follow applicable local law and any venue rules, which can impose requirements beyond the product’s built-in signal.
A considerate recording checklist
- Ask before intentionally recording identifiable people, especially in a conversation or close range.
- Do not record in spaces where people reasonably expect privacy, such as changing areas or medical settings.
- Point the camera away while discussing whether recording is acceptable.
- Explain what you intend to capture and who will be able to access it.
- Stop recording when someone objects or appears uncomfortable.
- Review and delete accidental footage rather than keeping it by default.
- Respect posted restrictions and local rules even when the glasses permit recording.
Walking while filming can also reduce attention to the route. If recording is important, stop first, frame the shot while stationary and resume walking only after capture is complete and the camera is no longer demanding attention.

Take breaks and respond to discomfort
Snap advises taking regular display breaks and stopping use if dizziness, nausea, eye strain, motion sickness or other discomfort occurs. Treat these symptoms as a reason to remove the glasses and rest, not as a problem to push through.
Stop in a safe place, remove the glasses, sit or stand securely and allow your vision and balance to return to normal. Do not continue walking while trying to adjust brightness, focus or settings to overcome symptoms. If discomfort persists after stopping use, seek appropriate medical advice.
Breaks are also useful when no symptom is present. Extended exposure to overlays or repeated refocusing between a virtual image and the physical scene can be tiring. Plan pauses on longer walks and use ordinary vision during those intervals. The exact break schedule depends on the model’s instructions and your response; no universal duration is established by the cited guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Video glasses are not protective eyewear
The cited Ray-Ban manual states that its product is not safety glasses and does not protect the eyes against mechanical-impact hazards. Do not substitute video glasses for certified protective eyewear when a task involves flying particles, impact, chemicals, workplace hazards or another risk requiring eye protection.
Check the manual and markings for your exact model. A tinted lens, prescription lens or camera module does not by itself establish impact, splash, industrial or sports protection. Use the protective equipment specified for the activity, and wear the video glasses only when doing so is compatible with that equipment and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Adjust your practice to the environment
Quiet, familiar paths
A familiar route may reduce the need for navigation, but it does not remove distraction risk. Keep notifications quiet, avoid reading the display and watch for changes such as construction, delivery vehicles and temporary barriers.
Busy streets and crossings
Disable visual and audio features that compete with traffic observation. Keep your head and eyes oriented toward vehicles, signals, cyclists and pedestrians. Never rely on a navigation arrow or spoken prompt as evidence that a crossing is clear.
Trails, parks and uneven ground
Use the glasses only in a configuration that lets you see roots, rocks, steps, branches and changes in grade. Pause all interaction before technical sections. If the display or frame interferes with depth perception, remove the glasses.

Groups and conversations
Tell companions when the camera or recording function is active, ask before capturing them and avoid allowing notifications to interrupt the conversation. If people cannot tell whether a camera is operating, choose not to record.
Low visibility or unfamiliar locations
When glare, darkness, fog or an unfamiliar layout already makes hazards harder to see, turn off nonessential electronics. Use a safe stationary position to consult a phone or map, or choose a route that does not require constant visual prompting.
Troubleshoot unsafe behavior instead of adapting to it
| What you notice | Immediate response | Longer-term fix |
|---|---|---|
| You keep glancing at alerts | Stop and silence or disable notifications. | Use a walking profile with only essential alerts, or none. |
| You cannot hear traffic or announcements | Mute audio and continue only when environmental sound is clear. | Lower volume, shorten audio use or reserve it for stationary stops. |
| You are unsure whether recording is active | Stop capture and remove the glasses from the situation. | Practice the camera control and indicator before the next outing. |
| You feel dizzy, nauseated or strained | Stop using the glasses and rest safely. | Follow the manual’s break guidance; discontinue use if symptoms recur. |
| The route prompt conflicts with a sign or barrier | Follow the physical environment and stop to reassess. | Update route data or choose another navigation method while stationary. |
| You need to change several settings | Stop rather than troubleshooting while moving. | Create a preset outdoor mode and learn its single activation control. |
How to decide whether to wear them on a particular walk
Ask three questions before leaving:
- Will this route demand continuous attention? Crossings, crowds, stairs, uneven ground and unfamiliar streets favor disabling the display and other nonessential features—or leaving the glasses at home.
- Can I stop safely when I need information? If the route has no safe places to pause, do not plan to rely on visual prompts while moving.
- Can I recognize and control every active feature? If you cannot explain how to pause the display, mute audio, silence notifications and stop recording, complete setup first or use ordinary glasses instead.
These questions do not create a formal safety rating. They are a practical way to apply the manufacturer warnings to the conditions of a particular outing.
What the current evidence does—and does not—show
Manufacturer guidance establishes that distraction is a product risk and recommends attention to surroundings, disabling electronics when full attention is needed, taking breaks and stopping when discomfort occurs. Privacy guidance establishes that asking permission and respecting sensitive locations matter when recording. The available material does not provide a numerical estimate of walking injuries, collision risk or the safety of any specific interaction pattern.
