To use custom nameservers with VestaCP, create two child (glue) hostnames such as ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com at your registrar, point both to the VestaCP server’s public IP address, delegate your domain to those hostnames, and then make VestaCP use the same names in its DNS zone and package settings. Once the registrar and VestaCP values match, allow DNS propagation—VestaCP’s official guide says records may take up to 24 hours to start working.
What this setup does
A normal hosted domain uses nameservers supplied by a registrar or DNS provider. A custom, or vanity, setup makes your own domain appear in the nameserver names: for example, ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com. VestaCP then serves DNS zones for domains that are delegated to those hostnames.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe arrangement has three separate parts that must agree:
- Registrar host records: child or glue records that map each nameserver hostname to the VestaCP server’s public IP address.
- Domain delegation: the domain’s authoritative nameserver fields are set to the two custom hostnames.
- VestaCP configuration: the nameserver domain is added with DNS support enabled, the
child-nstemplate is selected, and package defaults contain the same hostnames.
Missing any one of these layers can produce an apparently configured panel while resolvers still receive no usable answer. The official Vesta Control Panel documentation describes the requirement this way: “If you want to manage DNS zones using Vesta Control Panel, you will have to create 2 dns records, point them to server IP address and use them as a nameservers for the domain.”

Terms you need to distinguish
| Term | Meaning in this setup | Where you configure it |
|---|---|---|
| Child nameserver (host record) | A hostname such as ns1.yourdomain.com registered under your domain and assigned an IP address. |
Your domain registrar’s private, child, host, or glue-record area. |
| Glue record | The parent registry’s address data for a nameserver that is inside the delegated domain. It lets resolvers find the server without a circular lookup. | Registrar, usually when creating the child nameserver. |
| Delegation | The authoritative NS values published for a domain, such as ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com. |
Registrar’s nameserver settings for each domain. |
| DNS zone | The records VestaCP serves for a domain, including NS, A, MX, and other records. | VestaCP’s DNS section and generated configuration. |
| Package nameservers | Default NS hostnames assigned to domains that use a VestaCP package. | VestaCP → Packages → the selected package, commonly default. |
Creating a child record is not the same as changing a domain’s delegation. You need both: first make the hostnames resolvable at the registrar, then tell each hosted domain to use them.
Prepare the nameserver design
Choose two hostnames under a domain you control
Use a parent domain you own, such as yourdomain.com, and choose two distinct labels: ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com are the conventional choices. Keep the spelling, dots, and domain suffix identical at the registrar and in VestaCP. A difference such as ns1.yourdomain.com versus ns1.your-domain.com creates a different hostname.
Record the public server address
Write down the public IP address assigned to the VestaCP server. The registrar’s child-record form will ask for that address. The basic VestaCP example points both nameserver hostnames to the server IP. If your architecture uses separate addresses, a secondary DNS service, NAT, or more than one server, document those arrangements separately rather than mixing them with the single-server procedure below.
Check prerequisites before changing DNS
- Administrative access to the registrar account for the nameserver domain.
- Access to VestaCP with permission to add a DNS domain and edit packages.
- The server’s correct public IP address and a reachable VestaCP installation.
- A plan for every domain that will be delegated to the new nameservers.
- A maintenance window if existing production domains are being moved.
Step 1: Create child or glue records at the registrar
Registrars use different labels for this feature: child nameservers, private nameservers, host records, or register nameservers. Look for that function in the management page for yourdomain.com; it is different from the ordinary page where you select a domain’s nameservers.
- Open the registrar’s host, child, or glue-record management screen for the nameserver domain.
- Create a host named
ns1and assign the VestaCP server’s public IP address. - Create a second host named
ns2and assign the intended IP address. In the basic one-server design, this is the same server IP. - Save both records and wait for the registrar to confirm that the host objects exist.
Do not enter the full hostname into a field that expects only a label if the interface automatically appends the domain. Conversely, if the form expects a fully qualified name, enter ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com exactly. Registrar screens vary, so verify the resulting hostnames after saving.

Step 2: Delegate the nameserver domain
After the child records exist, change the nameserver selection for yourdomain.com itself to the two custom hostnames. In the registrar’s standard nameserver settings, enter:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ns1.yourdomain.comns2.yourdomain.com
This tells the parent registry that your domain is authoritative at those servers. The child records created in Step 1 provide the addresses needed to reach them. Save the delegation and keep a note of the exact values; you will reuse them in VestaCP.
Step 3: Add the nameserver domain in VestaCP
Now create the DNS zone that VestaCP will serve for the domain containing the nameserver hostnames.
- Sign in to VestaCP.
- Add
yourdomain.comas a domain and leave DNS Support enabled. - Open the VestaCP DNS section.
- Edit the domain you just added.
- Choose the
child-nsDNS template and save the change.
The template choice matters because it supplies the records needed for a domain that provides child nameservers. If DNS Support is disabled, VestaCP will not manage the zone even though the domain may appear elsewhere in the panel.
Inspect the resulting zone
After saving, inspect the generated records in the DNS section. The zone should contain NS values that refer to your chosen nameserver hostnames and address records that allow those hostnames to resolve to the server. The exact record ordering and additional defaults can vary with the VestaCP installation, but the names must match the registrar entries character for character.

Step 4: Set nameservers in the VestaCP package
VestaCP packages provide defaults for domains created under them. Set the package values so newly created domains receive the same authoritative nameservers rather than an old provider’s values.
- Open Packages in VestaCP.
- Edit the
defaultpackage, or edit the specific package assigned to your users. - Set the first nameserver to
ns1.yourdomain.com. - Set the second nameserver to
ns2.yourdomain.com. - Save the package.
Package defaults do not register child records at the registrar and do not delegate a domain. They only make the correct NS values available inside VestaCP for domains using that package. Existing zones may need to be checked individually if they were created before the package was changed.
Step 5: Delegate additional hosted domains
For each other domain hosted on this VestaCP server, use that domain’s registrar account and replace its current authoritative nameservers with the same two custom hostnames:
- Open the domain’s nameserver or DNS delegation settings.
- Choose the option for custom nameservers if the registrar presents presets.
- Enter
ns1.yourdomain.comandns2.yourdomain.com. - Save the delegation and record the time of the change.
Do this only after the child records for the nameserver domain exist. A domain delegated to hostnames that the parent registry cannot resolve will remain unreachable even if its VestaCP zone is perfect.
Step 6: Allow propagation and test in stages
DNS changes are published through registrars and cached by recursive resolvers. VestaCP’s official nameserver guide notes that it may take up to 24 hours before DNS records start working. Treat that as an upper guidance figure, not a guarantee that every resolver changes at the same moment.

Test in this order so a failure points to the correct layer:
- Confirm the registrar shows both child records and the intended IP address.
- Confirm the nameserver domain is delegated to the two custom hostnames.
- Confirm VestaCP has DNS Support enabled and the
child-nstemplate selected. - Confirm the VestaCP package lists the same two nameserver hostnames.
- Confirm each hosted domain is delegated to those nameservers.
- Check the expected records from more than one recursive DNS service or network after allowing time for caching.
During the transition, one resolver may show old delegation data while another shows the new data. Compare the exact names and addresses rather than judging success from a single browser request.
Verify and maintain the configuration from the CLI
VestaCP’s command-line reference includes commands for listing nameservers, changing user defaults, adding DNS domains, inspecting records, and rebuilding DNS configuration. The following forms use the documented syntax; replace uppercase placeholders with your own values.
| Command | Purpose | Example use |
|---|---|---|
v-list-user-ns |
Lists the nameservers configured for a user. | Use it to check whether the account’s stored NS values match the registrar delegation. |
v-change-user-ns USER NS1 NS2 |
Changes a user’s two nameserver values. | v-change-user-ns admin ns1.yourdomain.com ns2.yourdomain.com |
v-add-dns-domain USER DOMAIN IP [NS1] [NS2] |
Creates a DNS zone and accepts nameserver values. | v-add-dns-domain admin example.com 203.0.113.10 ns1.yourdomain.com ns2.yourdomain.com |
v-list-dns-records |
Lists DNS records for inspection. | Use it to verify NS and address records generated for a zone. |
v-rebuild-dns-domains |
Rebuilds DNS configuration after relevant settings or templates change. | Use it after a template change when generated configuration does not reflect the saved values. |
Run commands with the privileges required by your VestaCP installation and substitute the real account name, domain, and IP address. A command can complete successfully while the registrar still has the wrong delegation, so CLI output is one part of verification, not a replacement for checking the parent registry.
When to rebuild
If you edit a DNS template, VestaCP documents rebuilding user configuration so generated files pick up the template change. Templates are stored under /usr/local/vesta/data/templates/. Preserve a copy of any customized template and record the change before rebuilding; otherwise a later package or template operation can make troubleshooting harder.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Check and correction |
|---|---|---|
The registrar rejects or cannot save ns1 or ns2. |
The child-record function is different from ordinary DNS editing, or the form expects a label rather than a full hostname. | Open the registrar’s private/child nameserver area, follow its field format, and verify the saved host objects. |
| The custom nameserver hostname has no address. | The glue record is missing or points to the wrong IP. | Confirm both child records exist at the registrar and point to the intended public VestaCP address. |
| The nameserver domain works, but hosted domains do not. | The hosted domains still use old nameservers, or their VestaCP zones were not created. | Check each domain’s registrar delegation, then inspect its VestaCP DNS zone and package assignment. |
| VestaCP shows old nameserver values. | The domain was created under a package with old defaults, or a template change was not rebuilt. | Compare the package settings, use v-list-user-ns or v-list-dns-records, and rebuild DNS configuration when appropriate. |
| One resolver works while another fails shortly after a change. | Resolvers have different cached delegation or record data during propagation. | Recheck after the change has had time to propagate; do not repeatedly switch values during the transition. |
| Only one of the two nameservers responds. | One child record, address record, or service path is missing. | Verify both registrar host objects, both NS values, and the corresponding VestaCP records. In a one-server design, remember that two names are not two independent systems. |
Choose the right operating model
| Decision | VestaCP-managed, registrar child records | Externally managed or secondary DNS |
|---|---|---|
| Control location | Zones and nameserver defaults are maintained in VestaCP; the registrar supplies glue and delegation. | An external DNS platform or secondary server maintains some or all authoritative zones. |
| Setup complexity | Fewer moving parts and a straightforward fit for one VestaCP server. | Requires separate provisioning, synchronization, monitoring, and documentation. |
| Redundancy | Two hostnames can still resolve to the same server IP, so they do not by themselves provide independent failure protection. | Separate infrastructure can provide operational separation, subject to that provider’s design. |
| Automation | VestaCP UI and commands such as v-add-dns-domain support repeatable local setup. |
Automation must also cover the external DNS service and any zone transfer or synchronization process. |
| Main risk | A typo or missing glue object breaks every domain delegated to the custom nameservers. | Configuration drift between VestaCP and the external authoritative system can produce conflicting answers. |
When the simple one-server model is appropriate
The basic model is suitable when you want VestaCP to create and serve DNS zones from one publicly addressed server and you accept that both nameserver hostnames depend on that server. It minimizes components and follows the official VestaCP example.
When to document a different architecture
Use a separate design document if you have multiple server IPs, external secondary DNS, hidden primaries, or a split between web hosting and authoritative DNS. Record which system is authoritative, where changes are made, how zones are synchronized, and which addresses are registered as glue. Do not add untested addresses to the simple procedure merely to make the names look redundant.

Nameserver changes affect every delegated domain, so keep a small operational record containing the hostnames, IP addresses, registrar account, VestaCP package, and date of each change. Before changing an IP address:
- Create or update the corresponding child records at the registrar.
- Update the address records and any VestaCP settings that contain the old address.
- Verify the nameserver domain and a test hosted domain before moving additional delegations.
- Leave the old service available long enough for cached data to expire according to your operational plan.
- Recheck all delegated domains after the registrar confirms the new glue and delegation.
When changing only the nameserver hostnames, update the registrar child records, the nameserver domain’s VestaCP zone, package defaults, user settings, and every domain delegation as one coordinated change. A partial update can leave new domains working while older ones still point elsewhere.
Final verification checklist
- Both child hostnames exist at the registrar.
- Each child hostname points to the intended public IP address.
- The nameserver domain is delegated to the exact same two hostnames.
- The domain is present in VestaCP with DNS Support enabled.
- The VestaCP DNS domain uses the
child-nstemplate. - The relevant package lists the same
ns1andns2values. - Each hosted domain is delegated to those nameservers and has a corresponding VestaCP zone.
- CLI inspection shows the expected records, and a rebuild has been run after any template change.
- You have allowed the propagation period noted by VestaCP before declaring a global failure.
Once these checks agree, VestaCP can serve the zones for domains using your custom nameservers. The critical rule is consistency: the registrar’s glue records, domain delegation, VestaCP template, package defaults, and generated DNS records must all use the same hostnames and intended addresses.
