Ventoy can sometimes boot a SteamOS recovery image, but SteamOS recovery support is experimental rather than guaranteed. Ventoy’s documented design is to install Ventoy on a USB drive, copy image files to its data partition, and select an image from the boot menu. Steam’s documented recovery procedure instead writes the recovery image directly with Rufus, Balena Etcher, or a Linux command-line method. Use Ventoy when you accept that compatibility depends on the image, Ventoy release, firmware, and device; use Steam’s imaging instructions when you need the officially documented path.

Writing recovery media formats the selected USB drive. Back up anything on it first. Steam specifies an 8 GB minimum USB key for SteamOS recovery media.

What Ventoy does—and why SteamOS is a special case

Ventoy turns a USB drive into a boot menu. After Ventoy is installed, you normally copy one or more ISO or other supported image files to the large data partition, boot the computer from that USB, and choose an image. The project lists SteamOS among its image families and describes this install-copy-boot workflow in its project documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That listing is not a promise that every SteamOS recovery image will boot on every device. Ventoy’s release history describes SteamOS recovery-image support as experimental. The exact result can change with the SteamOS image, Ventoy version, UEFI firmware, Secure Boot state, and target hardware. There is no complete compatibility matrix covering all of those combinations.

Steam’s official SteamOS Installation and Repair instructions use direct imaging instead: Rufus on Windows, Balena Etcher on macOS or Linux, or a Linux bzcat/dd procedure. Ventoy is therefore an alternative experiment, not a replacement for Steam’s documented method.

Check these requirements before changing the USB

  • Correct recovery image: Steam separates image instructions for Deck/Machine/PC and Frame devices. Download the image intended for the device you are repairing from the current Steam Support page, and read the current device-specific notes before proceeding.
  • USB capacity: Steam specifies a USB key of at least 8 GB. A larger drive is acceptable, but capacity above that minimum is a convenience rather than a Steam requirement.
  • A complete backup: Installing Ventoy or writing a recovery image can erase the selected drive. Copy its files elsewhere and verify the backup before opening the installer.
  • A compatible port: You can connect the USB directly or through a hub. A USB-C hub or adapter is needed only when the target device has no matching port.
  • Power and time: Keep a laptop or handheld connected to power during installation and recovery. Do not remove the USB while Ventoy is being installed or while an image is being written.

Choose the preparation method

Method How media is prepared Support status and trade-off
Steam’s documented workflow Write the recovery image directly with Rufus on Windows, Balena Etcher on macOS or Linux, or Steam’s Linux command-line instructions. Officially documented by Steam; writing the image formats the USB and does not leave a normal Ventoy multi-image data partition.
Ventoy Install Ventoy to the USB, then copy the recovery image onto the Ventoy data partition and select it from Ventoy’s menu. SteamOS recovery support is experimental. Boot success is not guaranteed for a particular image, release, firmware, or device.

If a recovery attempt is urgent or Ventoy does not show the image, follow Steam’s direct-imaging instructions. Ventoy is most useful when you already maintain a Ventoy drive and want to try the recovery image without replacing the drive’s boot framework.

Step 1: obtain and verify the device-appropriate image

  1. Open Steam’s current SteamOS Installation and Repair page.
  2. Identify whether the target is a Steam Deck, another SteamOS Machine/PC, or a Frame device. Do not substitute an image for a different product family just because the file name looks similar.
  3. Download the recovery image using Steam’s current link. Steam may change image names, formats, or device instructions, so use the live page rather than an old mirror.
  4. Keep the downloaded file in an easy-to-find folder. If Steam supplies a compressed image, do not unpack or rename it unless the current instructions require that step; Ventoy’s image handling varies by format and release.

The recovery image is the operating-system payload. Ventoy supplies the boot menu and storage layout, but it does not convert an incompatible image into a supported one.

Step 2: back up the USB and install Ventoy

Installing Ventoy repartitions the selected USB drive. Every file on that drive should be considered disposable. Disconnect other removable drives where practical so you cannot accidentally select a backup disk.

Windows

  1. Download the current Windows package from the Ventoy project and extract it.
  2. Open the Ventoy installer with administrator rights.
  3. Insert the USB key and select its device entry in the installer. Check the capacity and model carefully; the operation targets the selected device, not merely a folder on it.
  4. Choose Install and acknowledge the erase warnings. Wait for the installer to report completion before removing the drive.
  5. Open the newly created, larger Ventoy partition in File Explorer. Leave the small system partition alone.

Ventoy’s Windows interface and warning text can change between releases. If the current installer offers Secure Boot or partition options, read their descriptions before accepting defaults.

Linux

  1. Download the current Linux archive and read Ventoy’s installation README at Ventoy’s installation documentation.
  2. Extract the archive and identify the whole USB device, such as /dev/sdb, with your distribution’s disk utility or lsblk. Do not choose a partition such as /dev/sdb1 when the installer asks for the disk.
  3. Run the installer command and option documented for your Ventoy release, using elevated privileges. The install operation overwrites the selected device; confirm the model and size immediately before accepting.
  4. After installation completes, mount the large Ventoy data partition. Do not modify the EFI or reserved partition unless Ventoy’s current documentation specifically instructs you to.

Because installer options and Secure Boot behavior are release-dependent, use the README that ships with the version you downloaded rather than copying a command from an unrelated older guide.

  • Fast transfer speeds up to 100MB/s
  • USB 3.0-enabled and USB 2.0-compatible
  • Protect private files with SanDisk SecureAccess software
  • Support: 5-year limited warranty

Step 3: copy the SteamOS recovery image

  1. Open the large Ventoy data partition.
  2. Copy the SteamOS recovery image onto it. You may place it in the root or in a clearly named folder; Ventoy scans the data partition and presents supported files in its menu.
  3. Wait for the file copy to finish and safely eject the USB from the computer. Do not use a shortcut that removes the drive while the operating-system image is still being written to the filesystem.
  4. If Ventoy does not list the file later, check its extension and the release notes for that Ventoy version. A recovery image that is accepted by Steam’s direct-writing tools may still be unsupported by Ventoy’s experimental loader.

Do not write the image to the Ventoy system partition. The normal Ventoy workflow is a file copy to the data partition; direct-writing an image to the whole disk would replace Ventoy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: boot the target device from Ventoy

Steam Deck

  1. Shut the Deck down completely.
  2. Insert the Ventoy USB, using a USB-C adapter or hub if necessary.
  3. Hold Volume Up while pressing Power to open the firmware interface.
  4. Select Boot Manager, then choose EFI USB Device.
  5. When the Ventoy menu appears, select the SteamOS recovery image. If Ventoy offers more than one boot mode, start with the default mode documented for your release.

Steam documents this Deck sequence in its installation and repair guide. Other computers and handhelds use different keys and menu labels; consult the device manufacturer’s firmware documentation for its Boot Manager procedure.

If the USB does not appear

  • Try a different USB port or a hub with its own power source if the device cannot supply enough power.
  • Re-enter the firmware Boot Manager rather than relying on the normal operating-system boot order.
  • Confirm that the Ventoy installation completed on the intended drive and that the recovery image is on the large data partition.
  • Check whether the device’s firmware requires an explicit external-USB boot selection or a temporary boot-key shortcut.

Step 5: select the recovery action that matches your goal

Once the SteamOS recovery environment starts, read each option carefully. The choices have different effects on games, personal files, operating systems, and boot partitions.

Repair SteamOS Reinstalls SteamOS while attempting to fix the installation. Attempts to preserve games and personal content. It is the least destructive choice, but you should still maintain a separate backup.
Re-image Device or Wipe Device & Install SteamOS Performs a factory-style reinstall. Erases user information, installed games, applications, and other operating systems on the target storage.
Recovery tools Provides tools for tasks such as changing boot partitions. Effects depend on the tool and operation. Do not change a boot partition unless you understand which installation it serves.
Rollback Returns to a prior known-good operating-system state when that option is available. Steam’s recovery guidance describes rollback as retaining user data while reverting the OS.

For the complete descriptions and any device-specific differences, use Steam’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guidance. If your objective is simply to repair a damaged installation, do not select the wipe/re-image option by mistake.

Secure Boot: two separate layers of policy

Secure Boot can prevent a recovery environment from starting, but there are two different layers to consider:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Device firmware: Steam says most non-Steam Deck devices require Secure Boot to be disabled before re-imaging from USB. The exact setting name and location vary by manufacturer.
  • Ventoy’s boot policy: Ventoy has its own Secure Boot mechanism and key-enrollment process. Its default policy effectively bypasses Secure Boot checks; its alternative follows UEFI checks but disables some Ventoy features. These choices are not the same as changing the target device’s firmware setting.

Do not globally disable protections or select a bypass policy as a routine troubleshooting step. Disabling firmware Secure Boot reduces a security control, while Ventoy’s policy affects how Ventoy itself is validated. Read the current Ventoy Secure Boot documentation and your device’s firmware guidance before changing either layer.

Ventoy’s release history notes that releases beginning with v1.1.14 use a new UEFI Secure Boot certificate authority and may require enrollment of a new key on first boot. Key prompts and enrollment steps are release-specific; follow the instructions for the exact version installed rather than treating an older enrollment walkthrough as universal.

Troubleshooting a failed Ventoy boot

Ventoy starts, but the SteamOS image is missing

  • Verify that the file is on the large Ventoy data partition, not the EFI or reserved partition.
  • Check that the copy completed and that the filename extension matches a format supported by the installed Ventoy release.
  • Re-download the image from Steam if the file is incomplete or corrupted.
  • Consult the current Ventoy release notes for changes to SteamOS recovery-image handling.

The image appears, but selecting it returns to the menu

  • Try the other boot mode offered by the current Ventoy release only if its documentation describes that mode for your firmware.
  • Confirm that the image is intended for the target device family.
  • Test the same image with Steam’s direct-writing workflow. A direct-written image separates an image-compatibility problem from a Ventoy-loading problem.

The device refuses the USB because of Secure Boot

  • Read the device firmware message and determine whether it is rejecting the USB before Ventoy starts.
  • Check the Ventoy Secure Boot key-enrollment instructions for your installed release, including the v1.1.14-and-later certificate change.
  • If the device is a non-Deck system that Steam says requires Secure Boot disabled for re-imaging, follow the manufacturer’s documented setting path and understand the security trade-off.

Recovery starts but the wrong disk or option is selected

Stop before confirming a destructive action. A re-image/wipe operation removes user information and installed content from the target storage. Return to the recovery menu, identify the intended device, and choose Repair SteamOS when preservation—not a factory reset—is the goal.

When to abandon Ventoy and use Steam’s documented method

Use Steam’s direct-writing procedure when Ventoy cannot boot the image, when the device’s firmware is unusually restrictive, or when you need the path Steam explicitly documents. On Windows, Steam names Rufus; on macOS and Linux, it names Balena Etcher; Steam also documents a Linux bzcat/dd approach. Each method writes the recovery image directly to the USB and formats it, so back up the drive first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switching methods means recreating the media. Copying the image onto a Ventoy partition does not transform that existing Ventoy drive into Steam’s direct-written recovery media. Reformat or rewrite the drive using the current Steam instructions, then boot it through the target device’s firmware Boot Manager.

Practical decision checklist

  • Have you selected the current recovery image for the exact device family?
  • Is the USB at least 8 GB, backed up, and the correct removable disk?
  • Did you install Ventoy to the whole USB device and copy the image to its large data partition?
  • Can you open the target’s Boot Manager and select the external EFI USB entry?
  • Have you decided whether you need Repair, a full Re-image/Wipe, Recovery tools, or Rollback?
  • Have you checked Secure Boot requirements for both the target firmware and your Ventoy release?
  • If Ventoy fails, are you prepared to recreate the media with Steam’s Rufus, Balena Etcher, or Linux instructions?
