Use longevity studies to estimate which luxury models are more likely to remain in service at a target mileage, not to predict exactly how long your car will last. The most useful approach combines a study’s mileage probability with model-year reliability data, ownership costs, safety, maintenance records and an inspection of the specific vehicle.
That distinction matters because a population estimate—such as a 38.8% modeled chance for the Lexus LS to reach 250,000 miles in iSeeCars’ 2026 study—is not a warranty, durability test or promise about any individual car.
What a vehicle longevity study actually measures
Longevity studies answer a narrower question than most buyers mean when they ask, “How reliable is this luxury car?” A longevity result usually estimates whether vehicles of a particular type reach a mileage or age threshold. It does not tell you that every example will reach that threshold, what repairs will be required along the way, or whether a specific used car has been maintained properly.
For example, iSeeCars’ Longest-Lasting Cars Study published September 15, 2026 estimates the probability that vehicles reach 250,000 miles. Its overall vehicle estimate is a 5.4% chance. That figure is a modeled outcome for a vehicle population; it is not a guaranteed service life for a new car or a remaining-life estimate for a used one.

A useful interpretation is comparative: if two vehicles are evaluated with the same method, the one with the higher probability appears more likely to reach the stated threshold in that study’s population. The result becomes more useful when you also ask what was measured, which vehicles were included and whether the threshold matches your ownership plan.
Start with the number’s meaning, not the ranking
A 250,000-mile probability is not a warranty
In the 2026 iSeeCars study, a 5.4% overall probability means the model estimates that roughly 5.4 out of 100 vehicles in the analyzed population will reach 250,000 miles under the study’s assumptions. It does not mean a car stops working at 250,000 miles, nor does it assign a 5.4% failure risk to a vehicle you own. The estimate also does not describe repair costs, downtime or the condition of the car at that mileage.
Probability is especially easy to misread when a study presents a league table. A model can rank first in a category while still having a low absolute chance of reaching a distant mileage threshold. Use the percentage and its baseline before using the rank as a buying signal.

Brand-level results summarize multiple models and generations. In iSeeCars’ 2026 estimates, Lexus has a 14.4% chance of reaching 250,000 miles and Acura has a 9.5% chance, compared with a 3.4% average for luxury brands. Those figures are useful for a broad first screen, but they do not establish that every Lexus or Acura model performs near its brand figure.
Within Lexus, the modeled probabilities vary sharply: the LS is at 38.8%, the RX hybrid at 28.9% and the IS at 17.5%. A buyer who stops at the brand result could therefore miss the difference between a particular model, generation and powertrain.
Segment leadership is not the same as a high absolute likelihood
iSeeCars lists the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque as the longest-lasting luxury subcompact SUV in its segment list, yet gives it a 1.2% estimated chance of reaching 250,000 miles. Its category rank tells you that it scored higher than the other vehicles in that comparison; the 1.2% figure tells you that reaching the threshold remains uncommon in absolute terms. Always read both pieces of information.

What the 2026 iSeeCars study did
The study analyzed more than 395 million vehicles. Researchers calculated average odometer readings for vehicles at each yearly age and used a proprietary model to estimate the probability of reaching mileage thresholds. This is a statistical projection from observed mileage patterns, not a mechanical teardown or a controlled durability test.

The method also reflects how vehicles are used. Karl Brauer, iSeeCars executive analyst, noted that “Luxury status doesn’t translate into extreme longevity,” while cautioning that the average luxury car may be driven differently from a mainstream vehicle. That is a possible usage-related factor, not proof that driving patterns explain every ranking. Do not use the comment as a substitute for model-specific evidence.
Read a longevity table in six passes
1. Identify the outcome and threshold
First, write down exactly what the study reports. A 250,000-mile probability, a 200,000-mile reliability rating, the age of vehicles still on the road and owner-reported defects are different outcomes. A score can look similar to another score while answering a different question.
iSeeCars describes its reliability rating as reflecting useful lifespan and the probability of reaching 200,000 miles. Its separate Quality Score incorporates broader information, including resale and safety sources. A 200,000-mile rating and a 250,000-mile probability should not be placed in one ranking as if they were interchangeable.
2. Check the unit of comparison
Prefer model, generation, powertrain and model-year results when they are available. A brand average combines vehicles with different engines, transmissions, electronics, body styles and production periods. The gap between the Lexus brand estimate and the LS estimate in the 2026 study shows why the unit matters.
3. Read the data rules and exclusions
Look for the age and mileage window, minimum sample requirements, weighting, discontinued-model rules and any excluded vehicle classes. A model with insufficient data may be omitted rather than assigned a low score. A future-looking probability also contains assumptions that would not appear in a simple count of reported defects.

4. Compare with a baseline
Keep the relevant baseline beside each number. For the 2026 luxury results, the 3.4% luxury-brand average provides context for Lexus at 14.4% and Acura at 9.5%. For a segment table, compare a model’s absolute probability with the category or industry baseline instead of relying only on first place, second place or a badge.
5. Add a different type of evidence
Owner-reported reliability histories can reveal the kinds of problems that a mileage-survival model does not show. Consumer Reports describes model-year reliability histories based on members’ reports of vehicle problems. That evidence complements, rather than replaces, a longevity estimate: one source focuses on observed problem patterns, while the other estimates the chance of reaching a mileage threshold.
6. Test the result against your ownership plan
A 250,000-mile endpoint may be highly relevant if you drive 25,000 miles a year and plan to keep a vehicle for a decade. It may be less important if you drive 7,000 miles annually and normally replace the car after four years. Use your expected annual mileage and years of ownership to decide how much weight to give a distant threshold.

Use the iSeeCars result to form a durability hypothesis, then use model-year reliability histories to look for recurring problem areas and generation changes. Neither source replaces a service record or an inspection.
A practical buying workflow
Step 1: Define the mileage decision you are making
- Estimate your annual mileage from commuting, family trips and regular long-distance travel.
- Choose a realistic ownership period.
- Multiply those figures to find the mileage you are likely to add, then include the vehicle’s current odometer reading if you are shopping used.
- Decide whether your real target is 150,000, 200,000 or 250,000 miles. A study’s threshold is useful only if it resembles your plan.
Write this target before opening a ranking. It prevents an impressive but irrelevant number from driving the decision.

Step 2: Build a model-and-generation shortlist
Start with model-level results where available. Then identify the generation and powertrain you would actually buy. Do not apply a current model’s result to an older generation without evidence, and do not apply a gasoline model’s result to a hybrid or plug-in version automatically.

Step 3: Compare each candidate with the correct baseline
Record the study year, threshold, model probability and relevant baseline in one worksheet. For example, place the Lexus LS’s 38.8% beside the overall 5.4% vehicle average only as broad context, while recognizing that luxury-brand and segment baselines may be more appropriate for a direct comparison. Keep the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque’s 1.2% beside its segment-leading rank so the rank cannot obscure the absolute probability.
Step 4: Investigate model-year reliability histories
Look for a pattern rather than a single anecdote. Check whether reported problems cluster in a particular model year, engine, transmission, infotainment system or electrical subsystem. A new redesign may have too little long-term history, while an older generation may have more observations but also more age-related wear.
Consumer Reports’ survey-based histories are useful for this step because they organize reported problems by model year. Remember that the survey is not the same measurement as a mileage-survival probability.

- Purchase price: A high longevity estimate does not make an unaffordable car a sound purchase.
- Routine maintenance: Include scheduled services, tires, brakes, fluids and inspection intervals.
- Repair exposure: Luxury vehicles can have expensive electronics, air suspension, advanced driver-assistance hardware and specialized parts even when a study suggests strong longevity.
- Fuel or energy use: Estimate costs using your mileage, not a generic annual figure.
- Insurance, taxes and registration: These can materially change the cost of keeping a vehicle for many years.
- Safety and features: A longer projected life does not compensate for a vehicle that lacks the safety equipment or functionality you need.
iSeeCars advises considering purchase price, operating costs, safety, features and other ownership priorities alongside lifespan. Treat that advice as part of the decision, not as an afterthought.

Step 6: Evaluate the individual used vehicle
For a used car, use the ranking as context—especially when comparing vehicles with higher odometer readings—but inspect the candidate itself. Request maintenance and repair records, verify the vehicle history, check title and accident information, and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. The inspection should cover leaks, corrosion, suspension, brakes, tires, cooling systems, diagnostic trouble codes and the operation of expensive electronic features appropriate to that model.
A well-maintained example with a higher odometer can be a better purchase than a neglected low-mileage example. The population estimate cannot establish which of those two cars is in front of you.
Step 7: Make a weighted decision
Assign your own priorities before choosing a winner. A simple worksheet can give longevity evidence one category, then score reliability history, purchase cost, expected operating cost, safety, features, driving suitability and the inspected condition of the actual car. The exact weights are personal; the important discipline is preventing one attractive percentage from overriding every other requirement.

Worked interpretation of the 2026 figures
When a high model probability supports a shortlist
The Lexus LS’s 38.8% modeled chance of reaching 250,000 miles is substantially higher than the 5.4% overall vehicle average reported by iSeeCars for 2026. That makes the LS a reasonable candidate for deeper investigation by a buyer who values very high mileage. It does not show that every LS will reach 250,000 miles, identify the cheapest LS generation to maintain or predict the condition of a particular used example.
When a brand result is not enough
Lexus’ 14.4% brand estimate is lower than the LS’s 38.8% and higher than the 3.4% luxury-brand average. The spread demonstrates why a buyer should move from brand to model and then to generation and powertrain. A brand badge is a starting filter, not a final reliability conclusion.
When a category winner needs caution
The Range Rover Evoque example shows how a rank can mislead. Its 1.2% probability may still be the highest among luxury subcompact SUVs in that table, but a buyer seeking a strong chance of 250,000 miles should not interpret “longest-lasting in segment” as “likely to reach 250,000 miles.” The correct next step is to compare other vehicle classes, ownership costs and actual reliability evidence rather than assuming the segment title settles the question.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Reading a probability as a guarantee: Rephrase it as a modeled chance for a population and keep the study year and threshold attached.
- Using a brand average for every model: Locate model-, generation- and powertrain-level information.
- Chasing rank without checking the percentage: Put the absolute probability and baseline beside the rank.
- Combining incompatible scores: Do not average a 250,000-mile probability with an owner-problem score or a 200,000-mile rating.
- Ignoring exclusions: An absent model may lack sufficient data or fall outside the study’s product rules.
- Assuming mileage predicts repair cost: Longevity studies generally do not tell you what maintenance or repairs cost.
- Applying old results to a redesign: Check whether the engine, transmission, electrical architecture and safety systems changed.
- Buying the ranking instead of the car: Verify records, history, condition and inspection findings for the individual vehicle.
- Ignoring usage differences: Luxury and mainstream vehicles may be driven differently, which can affect observed mileage patterns; treat that as a possible factor, not a universal explanation.
A buyer’s checklist
- What exact outcome does the study measure?
- Is the threshold 200,000 miles, 250,000 miles or something else?
- Is the result for a brand, model, generation, powertrain or model year?
- What year was the study published?
- How large is the dataset, and how were vehicles selected?
- Were insufficient-data models, discontinued models or vehicle classes excluded?
- What is the relevant industry or segment baseline?
- Does a second evidence source measure owner-reported problems or another distinct outcome?
- Does the model fit your annual mileage and planned ownership period?
- Have you priced maintenance, repairs, insurance, fuel and safety-related needs?
- For a used car, have you verified service records, vehicle history and an independent inspection?
- Are you keeping the study’s probability separate from the condition of the specific vehicle?
How to keep the evidence current
Longevity estimates can change when a new annual study updates the vehicle population, model coverage or methodology. The 2026 iSeeCars study is dated September 15, 2026, so record that date whenever you save a percentage. Recheck the latest edition before making a purchase decision rather than assuming a ranking remains unchanged.

Treat those figures as the scope reported for that survey year, not a permanent sample size.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: longevity studies are valuable for narrowing a luxury-car shortlist and understanding the estimated chance of reaching a mileage target. They become buying evidence only after you align the measurement with your ownership plan, compare like with like and verify the individual vehicle’s history and condition.
