You can use two thumbs to swipe-type on an Android phone by alternating them between words. Turn on Glide typing in Gboard, slide one thumb across the letters of a word without lifting it, then lift your thumb. Use the other thumb for the next word if that grip is comfortable.
Gboard documents a one-finger glide gesture, not a separate mode in which both thumbs swipe simultaneously. Two-thumb use is therefore a holding and alternating technique, not a special dual-swipe feature. Overlapping swipes from both thumbs are not established as supported input.
What “two-thumb swipe typing” means on Android
Swipe typing, which Google calls Glide typing in Gboard, replaces individual taps with one continuous gesture. You touch the first letter, drag across the remaining letters in order, and lift at the end of the word. Gboard then uses the path and its dictionary to insert the most likely word.

When people ask how to swipe type with both thumbs, they usually mean holding the phone with both hands and assigning one thumb to each successive word. For example, your left thumb can glide “the,” while your right thumb glides “weather,” then your left thumb handles the next word. This can reduce the distance each thumb travels and keep the phone steady.

That is different from swiping two words at the same time. Google’s instructions describe sliding one finger across a word and lifting to finish it. They do not document a simultaneous two-thumb input mode, a split swipe mode, or a setting that combines two overlapping gestures. Treat alternating thumbs as the supported, practical interpretation.
Google also notes that Glide typing is not available for every language. The exact menus can differ by Android version and phone manufacturer, so a missing label does not necessarily mean the keyboard is defective.

- An Android phone with a touchscreen and an on-screen keyboard.
- Gboard installed and selected as the active keyboard. Many phones ship with it enabled, but you may need to install it or switch to it in keyboard settings.
- At least one keyboard language that supports Glide typing. Availability varies by language.
- A text field, such as a message, note, search box, or document, in which to test the gesture.
- A grip that lets each thumb move across the keyboard without accidentally touching the screen with another finger.
You do not need a stylus, a replacement screen, a special screen protector, or a physical keyboard. The feature is software built into the on-screen keyboard.
Turn on Glide typing in Gboard
There are two common ways to reach the setting. The labels may be slightly different on a manufacturer’s Android build.

Method 1: Open Gboard from a text field
- Open any app that contains a text field, such as a messaging or notes app.
- Tap the field so the keyboard appears.
- Open the Gboard features menu. Depending on the layout, tap the toolbar’s four-square or arrow button, or the three-dot menu.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Open the section for typing or text correction if your version groups settings into categories.
- Find Glide typing and turn it on.
- Return to the text field and test one short word.

Method 2: Use Android’s system settings
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap System.
- Tap Languages and input.
- Tap Virtual keyboard.
- Select Gboard.
- Choose Glide typing and enable it.
On some phones, the same controls are under a section named General management, Keyboard, or On-screen keyboard. If you cannot find the exact path, open Settings and search for “Gboard” or “Glide typing.” Google identifies some of these steps as applying to Android 8.0 and later, while manufacturers can rename or rearrange menus.
Check the keyboard language and layout
- In Gboard settings, tap Languages.
- Select an existing language or tap Add keyboard.
- Choose the language and then select a layout, such as QWERTY, if Gboard offers more than one.
- Tap Done.
- When typing, use the language switch key or hold the space bar to move between enabled languages.
Gboard’s keyboard languages and layouts are configured separately from the phone’s overall display language. A language can be installed for typing even when it is not the language used by the Android interface.
How to swipe type with two thumbs
Once Glide typing is enabled, use this sequence for every word:
- Place one thumb on the first letter of the word.
- Without lifting, slide over the other letters in their spelling order. Your path does not have to trace the exact center of every key; it only needs to pass across the intended letters.
- Lift your thumb after the final letter. Gboard normally inserts a space before the next word automatically.
- Move the other thumb to the first letter of the next word and repeat.
For example, to enter “android phone,” your left thumb could glide from a through n, d, r, o, i, and d. Lift it, then use your right thumb to glide across “phone.” The hand assignment can change from word to word; there is no requirement that the same thumb always start a line or sentence.

Choose a grip that keeps the phone stable
- Two-handed portrait grip: Hold the phone in both hands and keep each thumb near its side of the keyboard. Alternate thumbs after lifting from each word.
- Low-thumb grip: Rest the lower edge of the phone against both palms so the thumbs can reach the middle rows without squeezing the device.
- Wide-phone adjustment: On a large screen, move the phone slightly lower in your palms rather than stretching a thumb to the top row. If available, a one-handed keyboard layout may shorten the reach, but the exact control depends on the Gboard version.
- Landscape typing: A wider keyboard can make long swipes easier for some users, while the increased distance can make alternating thumbs less comfortable. Test both orientations.
The goal is a clean, uninterrupted glide. If your second thumb touches the screen before the first swipe is complete, Gboard may interpret that contact as an extra touch or may end the gesture. Finish one swipe and lift before starting the next.
When to use taps instead
Swipe typing is optional on every word. Tap short, unusual, or technical terms when the predicted result is consistently wrong. A mixed approach is often more reliable than forcing a glide for names, email addresses, URLs, abbreviations, and strings containing numbers or symbols.
Enter punctuation, numbers, and capital letters
Glide typing is primarily designed for words. Use the keyboard’s normal controls for punctuation and symbols:
- Tap the comma, period, question mark, or other visible punctuation key.
- Tap the symbols or numbers key to switch layouts, then tap the required character.
- Use the shift key for a single capital letter. For an all-capital word, turn on caps lock if your layout provides it.
- For an email address, web address, or password, tapping is usually more predictable because punctuation and repeated characters matter.
After punctuation, check whether Gboard inserted a space automatically. If it did not, tap the space bar before beginning the next word. Behavior can vary with the app and the punctuation mark.
Correct a wrong word without restarting
Prediction is based on the gesture, the active language, and the words in Gboard’s dictionary. If the inserted word is not what you intended, correct it immediately rather than continuing a long sentence.

Use the suggestion strip
- Look at the suggestions above the keyboard after completing the swipe.
- Tap the intended suggestion if it appears.
- Continue with the next word using either thumb.
This is particularly useful when the gesture could form several common words. The suggestion strip is also the quickest way to choose a spelling that differs from Gboard’s first prediction.
Delete an unwanted word
- Double-tap the unwanted word in the text field.
- Choose Delete if the editing menu appears, or use the backspace key to remove the selection.
- Retype the word by tapping or swiping.
Google documents double-tapping an unwanted word and selecting Delete as a correction method. The exact editing buttons can depend on the app.
Correct before the next swipe
If the wrong word is the last item you entered, backspace once or select it, replace it, and then start the next glide. Delaying corrections can make it harder to see which word was misrecognized.
Language and layout choices that affect Glide typing
Glide typing is tied to the active Gboard language. If the keyboard is set to a language that does not support the feature, the Glide typing control may be unavailable or the gesture may not work as expected.

Keep only the languages you regularly use active while testing. Multiple active languages can change predictions and make it harder to tell whether a miss is caused by the swipe path or the language dictionary.

Troubleshoot Glide typing that is missing, laggy, or inaccurate
The Glide typing option is not visible
- Confirm that the active keyboard is Gboard rather than another on-screen keyboard.
- Open Gboard’s settings from the keyboard toolbar and from Android’s virtual-keyboard settings; one route may expose the control more clearly than the other.
- Check the selected language. Google says not all languages support Glide typing.
- Look for manufacturer-specific settings names such as On-screen keyboard or General management.
- Update Gboard through the device’s app-update mechanism, then reopen the keyboard.
The gesture inserts separate letters instead of a word
- Make sure Glide typing is enabled for the Gboard instance you are actually using.
- Keep the thumb on the screen throughout the word and lift only after the final letter.
- Start on the first letter and move across the intended letters in order.
- Check that another finger or thumb is not touching the screen during the swipe.
- Try a short, common word to distinguish a gesture problem from a dictionary or language issue.
Typing lags or taps register late
Google’s Gboard troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for an available Gboard update. It also says that turning off Personalization can reduce input lag and that keeping one or two active languages can make typing smoother. These are troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes.
- Update Gboard.
- Open Gboard settings and review the Personalization option; turn it off temporarily to test whether responsiveness improves.
- Remove languages you do not use so only one or two remain active.
- Restart the phone and test in a simple text field.
- If the keyboard is still delayed, compare behavior in another app. A delay limited to one app may come from that app’s text field rather than Gboard.

Predictions are consistently wrong
- Verify the active language and layout.
- Slow down enough to pass over every letter in the intended order.
- Use the suggestion strip to select the correct word.
- Tap unusual words instead of swiping them.
- Test with a common word. If common words work but names and specialist terms do not, the issue is likely dictionary coverage rather than the two-thumb technique.
The menu path does not match these steps
Android manufacturers customize Settings, and menu wording changes between releases. Use the Settings search field for “keyboard,” “virtual keyboard,” “Gboard,” or “Glide typing.” If the phone is managed by an organization or uses a heavily customized Android interface, consult the manufacturer’s support instructions for the equivalent virtual-keyboard path.
What two-thumb swipe typing cannot do
Alternating thumbs does not create two independent swipe streams. Starting a second swipe before the first thumb has lifted is not a documented Gboard workflow, so it may produce an incomplete word, an accidental tap, or no useful input at all. There is no Google-documented switch that assigns one simultaneous swipe to each thumb.
Two-thumb use also does not guarantee faster or more accurate typing. The result depends on the phone’s keyboard size, the language dictionary, the clarity of the gesture, and how steadily you hold the device. Use whichever thumb or tapping method gives the correct text with the fewest corrections.
A short practice routine
- Open a notes app and enable Gboard’s Glide typing.
- Type five common words with your left thumb, lifting after each word.
- Type five words with your right thumb.
- Alternate thumbs word by word for a short sentence.
- Repeat the sentence with one unusual word, tapping that word instead of swiping it.
- Check the suggestion strip after each uncertain word and correct it immediately.
This routine helps you find a comfortable starting position for each thumb without assuming that both thumbs can gesture simultaneously.

Enable Gboard’s Glide typing, swipe each word with one thumb, lift, and alternate thumbs between words. That is the reliable two-thumb approach documented by Google. Simultaneous overlapping swipes are not a documented Android or Gboard feature, so treat them as unsupported rather than looking for a hidden dual-thumb setting.
