There is no documented, manufacturer-supported method for joining two ordinary spring clothespins through their two holes. The holes may look like connector points, but the available evidence does not establish a universal hole-to-hole joining feature. A documented way to connect two old-fashioned, non-spring wooden clothespins uses a thick rubber band as the connector: loop the band around one pin, pass the second pin through that loop, and twist the pins together.

Recent articles have proposed that one opening helps hold a clothesline and the other accommodates fabric. That is a reported tip, not a confirmed rule for every ordinary clothespin, and the claimed reduction in clothing marks has not been verified by a manufacturer test or other supporting study.

What the two holes can—and cannot—be said to do

Many spring clothespins have two openings in the wooden body: one nearer the metal spring and another nearer the gripping ends. Their symmetry makes it tempting to thread one pin through another and create a linked chain. However, no source reviewed for this topic documents a reliable hole-based method for joining two ordinary spring pins.

That distinction matters because a hole can exist for manufacturing, clearance, hanging, or a specialized mechanism without being intended as a connector. A hole-to-hole technique would need more than a plausible shape: it would need instructions, a repeatable fit, and evidence that the wood and spring can tolerate the load without slipping or splitting. Those details have not been established for ordinary spring clothespins.

Mr. Pen- Large Wooden Clothes Pins, 2.9 Inch, 50 Pack
  • Mr. Pen wooden clothes pins come in a 50-pack, offering a reliable and sturdy solution for a variety of tasks around the home or office.
  • Made from high-quality natural wood, these clothes pins are durable and designed to withstand frequent use, with a rust-resistant galvanized coil for long-lasting performance.
  • Each pin measures 2.9 inches, making them perfect for holding laundry, organizing items, or even for use in crafts and DIY projects.
  • The natural wood finish offers a classic look while maintaining the practical functionality needed for everyday tasks.
  • These versatile pins are ideal for use in crafts, holding food bags, hanging pictures, or adding a decorative touch to DIY projects.

It is also worth being precise about the question. The fact that two openings are visible on a clothespin does not show that they were designed to mate with openings on a second pin. A connector would normally need some defined way to retain the pieces and a suitable fit across the intended product. The sources here provide neither a manufacturer instruction for that use nor a validated performance comparison of hole-based connections. So if you have seen a clever-looking arrangement online, treat it as an individual demonstration unless it comes with instructions for that particular clothespin model.

The proposed line-and-fabric explanation

A Tom’s Guide article dated October 9, 2026, proposes that the smaller opening nearest the spring can sit on a clothesline while the larger opening toward the tip can accommodate fabric. The article associates that arrangement with fewer pressure marks. iTechGuides’ review published the same day notes that the explanation is not established as a universal design intention: the claim does not identify manufacturer instructions or a supporting test.

You can treat the positioning idea as an optional experiment, not as a guaranteed function. Clothespins differ by manufacturer, wood thickness, spring shape, and hole size, so a tip that appears to work with one model may not transfer to another.

Keep the claim and the evidence separate: Tom’s Guide presents the smaller-hole/line and larger-hole/fabric arrangement as a useful tip, but iTechGuides points out that a general design rule and the claimed garment benefit are not established. Neither account supplies a standardized test showing that the arrangement reduces marks across different fabrics, line diameters, or clothespin models. If you try the placement, check that the pin still grips normally and inspect the fabric afterward. A favorable result with one item does not prove that every clothespin has those dedicated functions.

The documented way to join two wooden clothespins

The clearest source-backed joining method comes from the ERIC-hosted educational activity “42 Twisting and Turning Clothespins,” by Gerald Wm. Foster and Anne Marie Fries. It uses two old-fashioned, non-spring wooden clothespins and one thick rubber band. The band, not the holes, supplies the connection and tension.

This difference in materials is important. The activity does not describe taking two modern spring pins and threading them together. It calls for old-fashioned pins without metal springs and uses an elastic loop around the pins. That makes it a separate answer to the practical goal of connecting two pins, not proof that the holes on another style of pin have a joining purpose.

Materials

  • Two old-fashioned wooden clothespins without metal springs.
  • One thick rubber band large enough to loop around one pin without tearing.
  • A clear work surface where a released band or pin cannot strike anyone.

Do not substitute a thin, brittle band if the pins will be twisted repeatedly. The activity is designed to demonstrate stored and released energy, so the band may snap free if it is overstretched or damaged. The named supplies are simple household items, but the activity does not specify a brand, precise band dimensions, price, or load capacity; choose an intact band that fits the pins without forcing it.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Inspect the pins. Use sound, non-spring wooden pins. Discard pieces with cracks, splinters, or sharp edges.
  2. Loop the band around the first pin. Place one end of the thick rubber band around the body of one clothespin so it stays in place while you work.
  3. Form the loop. Pull the band away from the pin to create an open loop.
  4. Insert the second pin. Pass the second clothespin through the loop. The activity’s instruction is: “Insert the second clothespin through the loop that has been created and twist them together.”
  5. Twist gently. Rotate the pins so the rubber band wraps and holds them together. Stop if the band begins to whiten, fray, or cut into the wood.
  6. Test at low tension. Hold the assembly close to the work surface and apply only enough force to see whether the loop remains engaged. Do not aim it at a person or use it as a load-bearing fastener.

The source gives the core sequence—band around one pin, second pin through the loop, then twist. It does not specify a number of turns, a required orientation, or a maximum force. Avoid adding extra tension in an attempt to make the connection permanent: the activity is about twisting and stored energy, and the elastic band remains the part holding the pins together.

This procedure is presented as an educational activity about stored and released energy. It is not a clothesline-repair technique, a permanent joint, or a manufacturer-approved way to extend a clothespin’s capacity.

Why the rubber-band method is different from a hole connector

The rubber band wraps around the outside of the wooden body, so it does not depend on the diameter, position, or shape of either opening. It also supplies elastic tension that can be seen and adjusted. In contrast, a hole-to-hole connection would rely on the holes being aligned and sized to retain the second pin. Ordinary pins are not documented as having those mating dimensions.

The two methods also involve different pin types. The documented activity specifies non-spring pins. A modern spring clothespin has a metal coil and two hinged jaws; twisting another pin through its openings could place force on the spring, hinge area, or thin wood in ways the activity does not describe.

In practical terms, use the method that matches the job. The rubber-band loop is a documented way to connect two old-fashioned pins for the activity described by Foster and Fries. It does not create a stronger clothesline clip, turn two spring pins into a tested assembly, or establish that a pin’s openings are intended as attachment points. If what you need is a dependable way to hold laundry, use an intact clothespin in its ordinary gripping role rather than relying on an improvised pin-to-pin link.

Spring pins and old-fashioned pins: choose the right approach

Feature Ordinary spring clothespin Old-fashioned non-spring wooden pin
Construction Two wooden halves joined by a metal spring Single wooden pin with no metal spring
Hole-based joining evidence No documented, universal method The documented activity does not use the holes
Supported joining method None established by the sources reviewed Thick rubber-band loop
Source-backed purpose of joining Not established Educational twisting activity demonstrating stored and released energy
What not to assume That either opening is a standardized connector That the rubber-band assembly is a permanent or load-rated fastener

If your goal is simply to connect two wooden pins for a demonstration, use the pin and band combination specified by the activity. If your goal is to hang clothing, use a clothespin in its normal gripping role rather than relying on an improvised joint.

If you still want to investigate the holes

You can examine the openings without claiming that they are designed as connectors. Compare several pins from the same package and note whether the openings differ in size, position, or finish. Look for splits around the edges and check whether the spring moves freely. This observation may explain why one pin accepts a line or fabric differently from another, but it does not prove design intent.

A useful way to interpret what you see is to distinguish an observation from a conclusion. “This particular line sits in this particular opening” is an observation. “All clothespins have an opening designed for the line” is a much broader design claim and is not established by the cited coverage. Likewise, noticing less visible pressure on one test piece does not confirm that the arrangement prevents marks on other fabrics.

A cautious observation sequence

  1. Place one pin on a table with the spring facing upward.
  2. Identify the opening nearest the spring and the opening nearer the gripping tips.
  3. Check each opening for rough edges, cracks, or paint buildup.
  4. Without forcing anything, see whether a clothesline or a layer of scrap fabric can rest in an opening.
  5. Remove the material and inspect it for snagging, compression, or damage.

Keep the experiment limited to gentle placement. Do not wedge an oversized line or fabric bundle into an opening, lever against the wood, or use a pin that is already split. If a piece catches or the material shows damage, stop and use the clothespin normally. This is a cautious way to look at the proposed placement, not a test that can establish an official purpose or a safe load.

Do not suspend a person, tool, plant pot, or other heavy object from a hole. Do not twist two spring pins together through their openings while they are holding fabric or a line. A visual fit is not evidence of a safe working load.

What a patented dual-clip design does—and why it is not ordinary proof

US10683602B1 describes a specific dual-clip clothespin for a clothes-drying system. In that patented design, a proximal through-hole and a ramped guide can catch a line, rod, cord, or hanger cross-member, while the distal end grips clothing. This is evidence about that particular engineered product, with its own geometry and claims.

It does not establish that the two openings in a conventional spring clothespin were created to join two pins, nor does it validate the rubber-band activity as a substitute for the patented mechanism. Similar-looking openings can serve different purposes in different designs.

The useful comparison is about specificity. The patent names a dual-clip product and describes a through-hole and guide as parts of that design. An ordinary spring clothespin may look as though it has openings that could serve a similar role, but resemblance alone does not transfer the patent’s function to a different object. Follow the instructions for a specialized product if you have one; do not infer that an ordinary pin has the same geometry, retention behavior, or intended use.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Trying to force one spring pin through another

Symptom: The wood catches, the spring twists, or the opening splinters.

Correction: Stop forcing the pieces together. The sources do not document this as a supported connection. Switch to two non-spring pins and the thick-band loop if you need the twisting demonstration.

Using a thin or worn rubber band

Symptom: The band stretches unevenly, frays, or snaps while the pins are being twisted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Use a thick, intact band and reduce the amount of twist. Keep hands and faces away from the line of release.

  • Gentle Hold: Designed for light fabrics, these clothes pins wooden grip silk, scarves, and socks without leaving marks. Use them as clothesline clips for delicates outdoors or for hanging small organizers and decorations, keeping everything neatly in place

Assuming every rubber band will fit the activity

Symptom: The band cannot be looped around the first pin comfortably, or it is so loose that the pins do not stay together.

Correction: The activity specifies a thick rubber band but gives no exact size. Choose one that fits the pins without stretching it excessively, and stop if it looks damaged or cuts into the wood. Do not treat a poor fit as a reason to force or over-twist it.

Treating a line-positioning tip as a universal rule

Symptom: Clothing is still marked, the line slips, or the pin does not hold securely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Regard the smaller-opening/larger-opening arrangement as an unverified tip. Return to the pin’s ordinary gripping action and use a different, undamaged pin if it cannot hold the item reliably.

Assuming a hole is load-rated

Symptom: A hanging object pulls the pin open or leaves a crack around the opening.

Correction: Remove the load immediately. No source reviewed supplies a load rating for the holes on ordinary pins.

Confusing a special product with a standard pin

Symptom: A patent or product image appears to show a clothespin hole being used to hold a line, so you expect an ordinary pin to work the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Keep the designs separate. US10683602B1 describes a particular dual-clip clothespin with a through-hole and ramped guide. That example does not establish the function of openings in conventional spring pins.

Which method should you use?

Your objective Best-supported choice Reason
Join two old-fashioned wooden pins for a hands-on activity Thick rubber-band loop It is the documented procedure and names the required materials.
Join two ordinary spring pins through their openings No validated method The sources do not establish a repeatable hole-to-hole connector.
Explore whether a hole can position a line or fabric Careful, low-force observation A recent article proposes the idea, but its universal purpose and benefits remain unverified.
Use a specialized dual-clip mechanism Follow that product’s own instructions The patented through-hole and guide belong to a specific design, not ordinary pins.
Buy supplies for the documented twisting activity Old-fashioned non-spring wooden pins and a thick rubber band Those are the materials named in “42 Twisting and Turning Clothespins”; no particular brand or listing is specified.

The materials named for the activity are ordinary old-fashioned wooden pins and a thick rubber band. No specific product listing, price, or brand is established by the activity, so choose based on the stated material and fit rather than assuming a particular model is required. Buying the band and pins supports the documented activity only; it does not make the holes into a connector.

Bottom line for the two-hole question

The exact method implied by “use the two holes to join two pins together” is not documented for ordinary clothespins. The reliable, source-backed alternative is to use two old-fashioned non-spring wooden pins and a thick rubber band: loop the band around one pin, pass the second pin through the loop, and twist. Recent claims about assigning the smaller opening to a clothesline and the larger opening to fabric may be worth testing gently, but they should not be presented as a universal design rule or as proven protection against garment marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the rubber-band procedure with spring clothespins?

The documented activity specifies old-fashioned, non-spring wooden clothespins. It does not establish that spring pins are suitable, so use the specified pin type rather than treating the method as tested for spring models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the two openings definitely made to hold a clothesline and fabric?

No. A Tom’s Guide article published October 9, 2026, proposes those uses, while an iTechGuides review published the same day says the universal design purpose and garment-mark benefits lack manufacturer instructions or supporting tests.

Is the rubber-band connection permanent?

No. It is an elastic, twist-based connection described for an educational activity about stored and released energy, not a permanent joint or load-rated fastener.

Does the dual-clip patent prove that ordinary clothespin holes are connectors?

No. US10683602B1 covers a particular dual-clip design with its own through-hole and guide. Its features should not be generalized to conventional spring clothespins.

What supplies do I need for the documented method?

The ERIC-hosted activity “42 Twisting and Turning Clothespins,” by Gerald Wm. Foster and Anne Marie Fries, names two old-fashioned, non-spring wooden clothespins and a thick rubber band. It does not specify a brand, exact band dimensions, or price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the joined pins to hang laundry or support a heavy object?

No such use is established. The rubber-band procedure is an educational twisting activity, not a clothesline repair or load-rated fastener. The cited material also provides no load rating for ordinary clothespin openings.

Does using the smaller opening for the line guarantee fewer clothing marks?

No. Tom’s Guide proposed the line-and-fabric arrangement on October 9, 2026, but the claimed benefit is not supported by a manufacturer test or other supporting study in the cited coverage. Treat it as an optional, gentle experiment.
