The Minecraft recipe book is an in-game catalog and crafting assistant. Open it from your inventory or a crafting station, browse a category or search for an item, select the recipe, and follow the pattern shown in the grid. Ingredients you do not have appear in red. If the recipe uses the full 3×3 grid, move to a crafting table; the personal inventory grid is smaller.

The details differ slightly between Java and Bedrock Edition, especially around furnace access, search results, controls, and locked recipes. The instructions below cover those differences and explain what to do when a recipe is missing.

What the recipe book does

The recipe book is both a searchable catalog and a shortcut for preparing a recipe. It groups recipes into tabs, lets you search by item name, and shows the exact ingredients and arrangement required for the selected result. Selecting an entry can place the ingredients into the crafting grid, provided you have the required supplies and are using the correct crafting station.

Minecraft does not use ingredient substitutions in its standard recipes. A visually similar item, a different wood type where the recipe does not allow it, or an ingredient in the wrong slot will not satisfy the recipe. Treat the pattern in the book as the authoritative layout.

Minecraft’s official “How to craft” guide describes the feature this way: “The recipe book is organized into tabs to help you find different types of recipes, but you can also search for specific items.”

Open the recipe book

Use the inventory or station control assigned to your device, then select the recipe-book button in the crafting interface. Button labels vary with keyboard-and-mouse, controller, and touchscreen layouts, so check Settings and the in-game controls screen if the button is not obvious.

From the inventory

  1. Open your inventory with your configured inventory button.
  2. Locate the recipe-book icon beside the personal crafting grid.
  3. Select the icon to show the available recipe tabs and search field.

The inventory has only the small personal crafting grid. It is enough for recipes designed for that grid, but it cannot handle recipes that require all nine positions.

From a crafting table

  1. Place a crafting table and open it.
  2. Select the recipe-book icon in the crafting-table screen.
  3. Choose a recipe; the table’s 3×3 grid is used for recipes that need it.

A crafting table is the general-purpose crafting station for recipes that require a 3×3 arrangement. If a recipe will not fit in the inventory grid, open the book from a crafting table instead of trying to force it into the smaller grid.

From a furnace or smoker in Java Edition

In Java Edition, the recipe book is also available in the furnace and smoker interfaces. Open the appliance, then use its recipe-book control to browse recipes appropriate to that station. A furnace or smoker recipe cannot be completed in a crafting grid because it requires the appliance’s input and fuel slots.

Find a recipe by category or search

Browse category tabs

Recipe tabs divide the catalog into groups, making it practical to scan related items instead of scrolling through everything. Select a tab, then move through its recipe entries. The available groups depend on the interface and the recipes your world exposes.

Category browsing is useful when you know the kind of item you want—such as a tool, block, food, or station—but not its exact name. It can also reveal related recipes that you might not think to search for individually.

Search for an item

  1. Activate the recipe-book search field.
  2. Type part or all of the result item’s name.
  3. Review the filtered entries and select the recipe you want.

Search is an item-name filter, not a material-substitution tool. Searching for a word associated with an ingredient may not show every recipe that uses that ingredient; search for the item you intend to craft.

Bedrock Edition 1.20.30 changed search behavior so that matches can begin at the start of words and search can return recipes that have not yet been unlocked. Therefore, finding an entry in search does not always mean that your character is currently permitted to craft it. Check the recipe’s ingredient state and your world’s recipe-unlocking settings before treating the result as available.

Show recipes you can make now

Most recipe-book interfaces include a control that filters the list to recipes for which you currently have the necessary materials. Use that filter when you are working from your inventory and want a short, actionable list. Turn it off when you are planning what to gather or checking whether a recipe exists.

Read the selected recipe

Selecting an entry opens its recipe card and displays the required supplies in the crafting grid. Read the card in this order:

  1. Result: Confirm that the output is the item you intended to make.
  2. Station: Check whether the recipe is shown in an inventory grid, crafting table, furnace, smoker, or another supported interface.
  3. Pattern: Note the position of every ingredient in the displayed grid.
  4. Quantities: Check how many units are required in each occupied position.
  5. Availability: Look for red ingredient entries, which identify supplies that are missing from the relevant inventory.

Red entries are a gathering checklist. They do not indicate that the recipe is wrong; they indicate that the selected recipe cannot currently be completed with the supplies available to the interface.

Craft the item from the displayed pattern

  1. Gather the exact ingredients shown by the recipe card.
  2. Open the correct interface. Use the inventory for recipes that fit its personal grid, a crafting table for 3×3 recipes, and the specified processing station for furnace or smoker recipes.
  3. Select the recipe entry. If the interface supports automatic placement, the book will put available ingredients into the correct positions.
  4. Inspect the grid before crafting. Compare each occupied slot with the pattern in the recipe card.
  5. Craft the result using the interface’s craft or take-result control.

If you place ingredients manually, preserve the arrangement exactly. Shifting an ingredient one slot, omitting an empty position, or substituting another item prevents a shaped recipe from matching.

Shaped and shapeless recipes

Shaped recipes

A shaped recipe requires a specific arrangement. The relative positions shown in the recipe card matter, including which spaces are intentionally empty. Tools, blocks, and many equipment recipes use this kind of pattern. Follow the displayed rows and columns rather than treating the ingredients as an unordered list.

Shapeless recipes

A shapeless recipe requires the listed ingredients but not a fixed pattern. You can place those ingredients in any arrangement allowed by the grid, as long as every required item is present. The recipe card still tells you which items and quantities are needed.

Microsoft Learn’s recipe documentation identifies shaped and shapeless recipes alongside furnace, potion-brewing, and smithing-transform recipe types. The recipe book presents the practical result of those definitions: some entries demand a pattern, while others only demand the correct ingredients.

Inventory grid versus crafting table

Interface Grid or slots When to use it Important limitation
Player inventory Small personal crafting grid Recipes designed for the inventory crafting area Cannot complete recipes that require the full 3×3 grid
Crafting table 3×3 crafting grid General Minecraft crafting recipes, including larger patterns Must be placed in the world and opened
Furnace in Java Edition Input, fuel, and output slots Recipes processed by smelting Requires fuel and the furnace interface rather than a crafting grid
Smoker in Java Edition Input, fuel, and output slots Recipes processed by the smoker Requires the smoker interface and suitable fuel

The recipe book does not remove station requirements. Selecting a recipe in one interface does not turn that interface into another station. If the book shows a recipe in a 3×3 layout, open a crafting table; if it shows a processing recipe, use the station that supports it.

Java and Bedrock differences

Question Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Where can the book appear? Inventory, crafting table, and also furnace and smoker interfaces. Use the recipe-book controls provided by the inventory and crafting interfaces in your version; station availability can differ from Java.
How do I open it? Use the configured keyboard, mouse, or controller control shown in the interface. Use the configured keyboard, controller, or touchscreen control shown in the interface.
What does search return? Use the search field and the available filters; exact behavior can vary by version. In Bedrock 1.20.30, search matches the beginning of words and can return recipes that are not yet unlocked.
Can a world restrict crafting? Recipe visibility and availability follow the edition and world rules in use. The optional limited-crafting gamerule can prevent crafting recipes that have not been unlocked.

The official controls reference covers basic controls for both editions unless it identifies a difference. Because keybinds and button mappings are configurable, use the control prompt in your copy of Minecraft rather than relying on a key listed for a different platform.

Why a recipe is missing or cannot be crafted

The search term does not match the item name

Search filters by the result’s name. Try the full item name, then shorter words from that name. If you searched for a material instead of the output, switch to category browsing or search for the finished item.

The recipe is not unlocked

Recipe visibility can depend on unlock conditions. Bedrock recipe definitions support unlocking when an item is obtained and can also use contextual conditions, such as entering water or having a specified number of items. A recipe may therefore appear only after the relevant event occurs.

In Bedrock 1.20.30, search can show an entry before it is unlocked. Treat that result as a preview of the recipe, then satisfy the world’s unlock condition before attempting to craft it.

Limited crafting is enabled

Bedrock worlds can enable the optional limited-crafting gamerule. When it is active, recipes that have not been unlocked are blocked even if you know the pattern and possess the ingredients. Unlock the recipe through the world’s intended progression, or change the gamerule only if you control the world and want unrestricted crafting.

You are using the wrong station

A recipe that needs a 3×3 grid will not work in the inventory grid. A smelting or smoking recipe will not work on a crafting table. Reopen the recipe from the station named by its interface and move the materials there.

An ingredient is red

Check the red slot one item at a time. Confirm the item identity, quantity, and location: the required supply may be in another container, in a different inventory, or absent entirely. Move it into the interface’s usable inventory, then select the recipe again.

The pattern is wrong

For a shaped recipe, compare every occupied and empty position. Do not rotate, mirror, or rearrange the pattern unless the recipe card itself shows that arrangement as valid. Standard recipes do not accept substitutions.

The controls are different on your device

Keyboard, mouse, gamepad, and touchscreen layouts use different prompts. Open the controls or keybinds menu, look for the inventory and recipe-book actions, and follow the button label shown in your edition. A missing familiar key does not mean that the recipe book is unavailable.

How to see all available crafting recipes

  1. Open the recipe book from the inventory or a crafting table.
  2. Clear the search field.
  3. Turn off any “craftable only” or equivalent availability filter if you want to inspect recipes you cannot currently make.
  4. Open each category tab and scroll through its entries.
  5. On Bedrock 1.20.30, remember that search may expose locked entries; use the recipe’s unlock state to distinguish known, available, and merely discoverable items.

There is no need to memorize every pattern. The book is intended to be the reference: use category tabs for discovery, search for a known output, and select an entry whenever you need the exact arrangement.

A reliable workflow for everyday crafting

  1. Decide the output first. Search for the item you want rather than guessing which materials might produce it.
  2. Choose the right station. Start in the inventory for simple personal-grid recipes; use a crafting table for any 3×3 recipe; use a furnace or smoker in Java when the recipe belongs to that station.
  3. Check unlock status. If the entry is visible but unavailable, determine whether an unlock event or a Bedrock limited-crafting rule is responsible.
  4. Gather the red items. Use the highlighted missing ingredients as a precise shopping list.
  5. Verify the pattern. Let the book place items automatically when possible; otherwise reproduce each occupied and empty slot exactly.
  6. Take the result and inspect leftovers. Confirm that the output is correct and that unused ingredients remain in the interface or inventory as expected.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to craft a 3×3 recipe in the inventory grid.
  • Assuming a search result is unlocked, especially in Bedrock 1.20.30.
  • Replacing a required ingredient with a visually similar item.
  • Ignoring red entries and then repeatedly pressing the craft control.
  • Putting every ingredient into the grid without following a shaped recipe’s pattern.
  • Looking for a crafting-table recipe in a furnace or smoker, or looking for a processing recipe in a crafting grid.
  • Assuming a key or button from another platform applies to your current control layout.
