WordPress.com can turn an email into a blog post: the subject line becomes the title and the message body becomes the content. Open Settings → Writing, enable Post by Email (or choose Create Address on eligible Business and Commerce sites), then send messages to the private address WordPress generates. Self-hosted WordPress uses a different mailbox-credentials setup, so the correct instructions depend on where your site runs.
What “Post by Email” does
Post by Email is an inbound publishing feature. You compose an email and send it to a special destination; WordPress converts that message into one blog post. WordPress.com describes it as a way to publish quickly from devices such as phones.
- The email subject becomes the post title.
- The email body becomes the post content.
- A formatted or HTML-capable email can preserve much of its rich text, although unnecessary HTML may be removed for display.
- Each email creates only one blog post.
This is not the same as emailing subscribers. Post by Email brings a message into your site for publication; a newsletter feature sends a post out to people who subscribed.
Check which WordPress setup you have
The procedure is materially different between WordPress.com and a self-hosted WordPress installation.

Set up Post by Email on WordPress.com
1. Open the writing settings
- Sign in to the site dashboard.
- Open Settings → Writing.
- Find the Post by Email section.
On a site without plugins, select Enable when that button is shown. On an eligible Business or Commerce site using the documented newer flow, select Create Address.
If the feature is not offered on your plan, the official setup guidance identifies free, Personal and Premium sites as requiring an upgrade before using Post by Email.
2. Copy and protect the generated address
WordPress displays a unique address for your user and site context. Copy it into a password manager or another secure location rather than leaving it in a public note, email footer or shared document. WordPress.com warns: Keep this address secret—anyone who knows it can publish to your blog.
Treat it like a publishing credential, not like an ordinary contact address.
On a multiuser blog, each user can create an address for their own use. A Contributor’s email is saved as a pending post instead of being published immediately, so the role still controls whether the message goes live.
3. Compose the message
In your email client, put the exact title you want readers to see in the subject line. Write the article in the message body, then address the message to the generated WordPress.com address. The subject becomes the post’s title and the body becomes its content; there is no separate title field to fill in.

Send one article per message. If you need two posts, send two separate emails with separate subjects and bodies.

WordPress.com says to expect a notification containing the post details a few minutes after sending. Check the site’s posts list and the notification before assuming the message failed. If your role is Contributor, look under pending posts rather than published posts.
Control formatting, signatures and metadata
Rich text and HTML
A rich-text or HTML-capable mail client can preserve formatting such as emphasis, links and basic structure. WordPress.com sanitizes the incoming markup, so unnecessary HTML may be stripped or displayed differently from the composing window. For predictable results, use simple formatting and preview the resulting post.
Remove an automatic phone signature
Many phone and mail apps append a carrier or app signature. To stop that text from appearing in the post, insert [end] on its own line, with a blank line before it. Content after that marker is treated as the signature and omitted.

Keep each shortcode in the format shown by the WordPress.com documentation. If a shortcode is malformed or unsupported, the text may remain in the post instead of changing its settings, so verify the result after the notification arrives.
Add images and other media
Attachments are handled separately from the message that creates the post. The documented pattern uses a destination based on your secret address:
media+YOUR_SECRET_EMAIL@post.wordpress.comReplace the example token with the secret address WordPress generated for you. Keep that address private, and follow the attachment instructions in the WordPress.com interface for the media you want to import. Because one ordinary email produces one post, send media as a separate message when the documented workflow calls for it, then confirm that the files appear in the media library or post.
Manage or revoke the WordPress.com address
Regenerate after exposure
Regenerate the address immediately if it appears in a public page, a forwarded message, a shared screenshot or an account that other people can access. The old address should no longer be used after regeneration; update it in your password manager and phone shortcuts.

Disable the feature
The support flow also provides a disable option. Use it when you no longer publish by email or when you want to eliminate the inbound publishing route entirely. Disabling prevents that address from being used as an active publishing path.

Configure Post by Email on self-hosted WordPress
Self-hosted WordPress does not use the WordPress.com generated-address workflow. The WordPress.org Settings → Writing screen documents a mail-retrieval configuration in which WordPress checks a mailbox you provide.
Enter the mailbox settings
- Log in to the WordPress administration area.
- Open Settings → Writing.
- Locate the Post by Email or mail-retrieval fields.
- Enter the Mail Server supplied by your mail provider.
- Enter the server’s Port.
- Enter the mailbox Login Name.
- Enter the mailbox Password.
- Choose the Default Mail Category for imported posts.
- Save the settings.
WordPress then checks the configured account and imports messages according to those settings. Use a mailbox created specifically for this purpose rather than a personal inbox, and restrict access to the credentials. The exact server name, port and authentication requirements come from your mail provider; they are not the same as the WordPress.com secret address.
Understand the security trade-off
On WordPress.com, possession of the generated address is enough to submit a post, and recovery is a matter of regenerating or disabling that address. On self-hosted WordPress, the risk is concentrated in the mailbox credentials and the server configuration. If the credentials are exposed, change the mailbox password or remove the account’s access at the mail provider, then update or disable the WordPress settings.

Troubleshoot common problems
No post appears after sending
- Confirm that you sent to the current generated address, not an older address that was regenerated or disabled.
- Check the site’s post list and pending area, not only the public blog.
- Allow a few minutes for the WordPress.com notification and import to complete.
- Verify that your plan supports the WordPress.com feature and that it is enabled under Settings → Writing.
The post is pending instead of published
This is expected for a Contributor-role submission on a WordPress.com multiuser site. An editor or administrator must review and publish the pending post.
The title or body is wrong
The subject line is the title, so remove prefixes such as “Fwd:” if you do not want them displayed. The body is the content; text placed in the subject cannot become body copy. Send a corrected email as a new post, then remove the incorrect draft or published version according to your normal editorial process.

A phone signature appears in the article
Put [end] on a separate line after a blank line at the end of the intended article. The marker must be in the message body, not the subject.
Formatting is missing
Use a rich-text or HTML-capable email client and keep the markup simple. WordPress.com may strip unnecessary HTML during sanitization, so inspect the imported post and adjust the email’s formatting rather than relying on complex pasted markup.
You suspect the secret address was exposed
Regenerate the WordPress.com address or disable Post by Email. For a self-hosted site, rotate the mailbox password and revise the mail-retrieval settings. Do not wait for an unauthorized post before revoking the credential.
Post by Email is not a newsletter
Post by Email is a publishing input: you send an email and WordPress creates a post. WordPress.com Newsletter is an outbound subscriber-notification feature. Its controls are under Jetpack → Newsletter, where you manage defaults, content and subscriber settings. Enabling one feature does not automatically configure the other.
Use Post by Email when the goal is to create or schedule site content from an email client. Use the newsletter settings when the goal is to notify subscribers about published content.
