Ore Excavation lets a Minecraft Java Edition player mine a connected ore vein, fell a tree, or perform another eligible tool action in one operation. Install a build that matches your Minecraft version and loader, assign its excavation key in Options → Controls, hold a suitable tool, then hold the key while breaking one eligible block. The mod applies its configured size, distance, speed, cost, grouping, and block/tool rules to the connected area.

What Ore Excavation does

Ore Excavation is a utility mod for Minecraft Java Edition. Instead of breaking every block in an ore vein individually, it searches for connected blocks that meet its rules and processes them as one tool action. The same system can be used for other tool-based jobs, such as cutting down a connected tree, when the relevant blocks and tool are allowed by the configuration.

The project describes its purpose as mining whole ore veins, cutting down whole trees, or performing another tool-based action in one go. It is not a new ore-generation system: it changes how an eligible action is carried out in the world. Exact behavior depends on the installed release and the settings selected by the player or modpack author.

  • Connected-block mining: the mod searches from the block you break and groups eligible neighboring blocks.
  • Configurable limits: maximum size, search distance, speed, and cost can restrict the operation.
  • Eligibility rules: tools and blocks can be allowed or denied with blacklists, whitelists, and custom grouping.
  • Runtime configuration: the project advertises in-game configuration that can be changed without restarting or reloading.
  • Recovery: an undo command is advertised, but its exact syntax is release-specific; use the command shown by your installed build rather than copying a command from another version.

Because the operation can remove many blocks quickly, treat it as a server-rule and resource-management feature, not merely a convenience key. Durability, hunger or exhaustion, drops, permissions, and server performance still matter.

Check compatibility before installing

Ore Excavation targets Minecraft Java Edition and publishes Forge and NeoForge builds. Project listings identify releases covering Java Edition 1.20.1–1.20.2, 1.20.4, 1.20.6, and 1.21, but the available files and loader support can change. Always select the exact game version and loader shown for the file you intend to use.

What must match What to verify Why it matters
Minecraft edition Java Edition A Java mod file will not install in Bedrock Edition.
Game version The release listed on the current project page, such as a supported 1.20.x or 1.21 build Even nearby versions can have different mod-loader APIs.
Loader Forge or NeoForge, exactly as named by the file A Forge file is not automatically interchangeable with a NeoForge instance.
Environment Client, server, or both, as indicated by the release Multiplayer requires compatible files and loaders on the participating sides.

The project is listed for both client and server environments. In a single-player installation, the client instance contains the mod and runs the integrated server. On a dedicated server, follow the server pack’s required-side instructions and make the client and server versions agree.

Install the mod in a matching instance

  1. Identify the instance. In your launcher or modpack manager, note the Minecraft Java Edition version and whether it uses Forge or NeoForge.
  2. Choose the file. Use the trusted Ore Excavation project listing and select a file whose game version and loader exactly match that instance. Do not assume that the newest file supports an older profile.
  3. Install the loader first. Start the instance once with its selected Forge or NeoForge profile so the launcher creates the normal game and mods directories.
  4. Place the mod in the instance. Add the downloaded mod file to that instance’s mods set using the launcher’s normal workflow. Keep separate profiles separate; putting a file in the wrong profile can make it appear to be missing.
  5. Launch and check the title screen or log. Confirm that the expected loader and Ore Excavation build are loaded. If the game stops during startup, read the loader’s error message for a version, dependency, or duplicate-file conflict.
  6. Repeat on a server when required. For a dedicated multiplayer server, install the compatible server-side build and restart it according to the server host’s procedure. Players should use the matching client build and loader.

Do not mix a release for one Minecraft version with a different profile simply because both numbers look similar. Keep a backup of a test world before trying a new bulk-mining configuration, especially in an established survival world.

Activate vein mining in a world

  1. Launch a world that was started with a compatible Ore Excavation build.
  2. Open Options → Controls and locate the mod’s excavation or vein-mining action. The key is configurable and can differ by release or modpack.
  3. Resolve any red key conflict shown by the Controls screen. A conflicting key may prevent the action from being recognized or may trigger another action at the same time.
  4. Hold a tool that is valid for the block you want to mine. A pickaxe that can normally break the ore is the safest first test.
  5. Hold the excavation key, then break one eligible block. Ore Excavation searches connected blocks and applies the configured grouping, maximum size, distance, speed, cost, and blacklist or whitelist rules.
  6. Release the key and inspect the result before attempting a larger vein. Check the drops, remaining durability, hunger or exhaustion, and whether the server applied any protection or permission rule.

There is no universal Ore Excavation key that should be assumed across every release. The separate project named Excavation documents the backtick key (`) as its default, but that detail belongs to that project and should not be applied automatically to Ore Excavation.

Understand what happens after you press the key

Connected blocks are evaluated as a group

The trigger block is the starting point. The mod then searches for connected blocks that satisfy the active grouping and eligibility rules. A vein that appears visually close may not be part of the same connected group, while a group can be larger than expected if your configuration allows diagonal or custom connections. The grouping shape and supported connection behavior are version- and configuration-dependent, so test the setting in a disposable area.

The tool and block rules are enforced

Ore Excavation is designed around tool-based actions. The held tool must be valid for the target block, and the block must be eligible under the current whitelist, blacklist, or custom grouping. If nothing happens, first test a normal ore block with the tool that ordinarily mines it; decorative blocks, fluids, and protected blocks may not qualify.

Limits prevent an uncontrolled operation

Maximum size limits how many blocks one activation may affect. Distance limits how far the search can reach from the starting block. Speed controls how quickly the blocks are processed, and cost can impose a resource or durability-related restriction, depending on the release and configuration. These settings are safeguards as well as convenience controls.

Server rules still apply

Claim protection, adventure-mode restrictions, permissions, region rules, and anti-cheat or performance policies can deny or limit the action. A successful test in a local world does not guarantee that the same operation will be permitted on a multiplayer server.

Configure size, speed, cost, and reach

Use the mod’s in-game configuration screen where it is available. The project advertises changes that do not require a restart or reload, but individual modpacks can expose only a subset of settings or add their own restrictions. Change one control at a time and test it so you know which setting caused a result.

Maximum excavation size

Set a conservative maximum while learning the mod. A small limit makes it easier to notice an incorrect whitelist or grouping rule before an entire stockpile or structure is affected. Increase the value only after confirming that the operation consumes the expected durability and produces the expected drops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Speed

Speed changes how quickly the grouped blocks are processed. A faster operation is convenient, but it can make mistakes harder to stop and can create a larger burst of work for a server. Use a slower value while testing large groups or unfamiliar blocks.

Distance

Distance controls how far the search may travel from the starting block. A short distance is useful when several veins or player-built structures are close together. If a vein appears incomplete, check distance and grouping before assuming the mod is broken.

Cost and resource checks

Ore Excavation advertises a configurable cost. The meaning of that cost depends on the installed release and pack configuration, so read the setting’s in-game description. Compare the tool’s durability and the operation’s other resource effects during a small test rather than assuming that bulk mining is free.

Control eligible tools and blocks

Tool eligibility

Use the eligible-tool controls to decide which tools may trigger bulk actions. A restrictive list helps prevent accidental excavation with a tool intended for precision work. Pack developers can also use per-tool overrides, a feature the project advertises, to give different tools different limits or behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Block blacklists and whitelists

A whitelist permits only specified blocks; a blacklist excludes specified blocks while allowing other eligible blocks. Choose one approach deliberately. A whitelist is safer for a shared server because new blocks added by another mod are not automatically included. A blacklist is more convenient when most ordinary ores should work but a few dangerous or decorative blocks must be excluded.

Custom grouping

Grouping determines which blocks are considered part of the same action. Configure it to match the way your pack treats ores, logs, or other tool targets. If a custom group behaves unexpectedly, temporarily reduce the maximum size and distance, test one block type, and then add categories back one at a time.

A safe first-use test

  1. Create or open a backup copy of a test world.
  2. Set a small maximum size and a modest search distance.
  3. Use a common ore and the normal tool for that ore.
  4. Hold the key assigned in Options → Controls and break one block.
  5. Count the blocks affected and compare the result with your configured limit.
  6. Check tool durability, drops, hunger or exhaustion, and any status or permission message.
  7. Test a block that should be excluded to verify the blacklist or whitelist.
  8. Only then raise the size, speed, or distance for normal play.

This sequence distinguishes an input problem from a configuration problem. It also exposes a dangerous grouping rule before it reaches a large vein, a tree farm, or a player-built structure.

Use Ore Excavation in multiplayer

Match the server and client mod versions and loaders. The project listings identify support for both client and server environments, but a server owner can still disable the feature, restrict its size, or enforce a different configuration. Ask the administrator which settings are allowed before troubleshooting your client.

A client-only key press cannot bypass a server’s protection or permission system. If ordinary single-block mining works but excavation does not, the server may have disabled the bulk action or applied a lower limit.

Troubleshoot a key that does nothing

Check the binding first

Return to Options → Controls and confirm that the excavation action has a key assigned. Resolve conflicts and verify that the key is physically producing the character or scan code expected by your keyboard layout.

Verify version and loader

Confirm that the running profile is the one into which you installed the mod. A Forge profile with a NeoForge file, or a 1.20.x file in a 1.21 profile, can fail at startup or leave the expected action unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test a valid tool and block

Hold the correct tool for a simple eligible ore. If normal mining works but the grouped action does not, inspect block and tool lists, maximum size, distance, cost, and grouping settings.

Account for keyboard layout

The project warns that unusual symbols can be unreliable on non-US keyboards when outdated input libraries are involved. Avoid binding the action to a symbol that your layout or the installed library does not report consistently. Choose an ordinary, unused key and test it in the Controls screen.

Check server restrictions

On multiplayer, compare client and server versions and ask whether the administrator has disabled or limited excavation. A local test cannot prove that a server will permit the same action.

Undo an accidental excavation

Ore Excavation advertises an undo command. Because command names and syntax can vary between releases and modpacks, open the installed mod’s command help or configuration documentation and use the exact syntax it reports. Do not rely on a command copied from the separate Excavation project or from a different Ore Excavation version. If no undo operation is available in your build, restore the test-world backup or use the server’s normal rollback tools.

Ore Excavation versus Create Ore Excavation

Despite the similar name, Create Ore Excavation is a different addon. It requires the Create mod and adds hidden infinite ore veins and fluid reservoirs. Its intended workflow uses a Drilling Machine, Fluid Extractor, rotational force, and an Ore Vein Finder. That is an automation and resource-generation system, not the connected-block utility that activates while you hold a key and break an existing ore block.

Feature Ore Excavation Create Ore Excavation
Primary purpose Bulk-mines connected eligible blocks and performs other tool actions Adds hidden infinite ore veins and fluid reservoirs for machinery
Activation Configurable excavation key while breaking a valid block Machines and tools from the Create-based system
Main requirements Compatible Ore Excavation build and its supported loader Create plus the Create Ore Excavation addon
Typical equipment A valid mining or cutting tool Drilling Machine, Fluid Extractor, rotational force, and Ore Vein Finder
What it changes How connected existing blocks are processed How automated, effectively infinite resource veins are located and extracted

If your goal is to mine one existing vein quickly, use the ordinary Ore Excavation workflow. If you are building a Create-powered extraction setup, look for the separate addon instead; installing one does not substitute for the other.

Practical configuration decisions

For a cautious survival world

Use a small maximum size, short distance, moderate speed, and a whitelist containing only the ores you intend to mine. Keep the key away from frequently used movement or interaction keys. This setup reduces the chance that a mistaken press reaches a nearby structure.

For tree harvesting

Use a tool and block grouping intended for logs, then test on one naturally generated tree. Check that leaves, decorative wood, and player-built beams are not included unintentionally. Increase the size only after confirming that the grouping recognizes the tree shape you expect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a shared server

Ask the administrator for the permitted maximum, speed, distance, and cost. A server-friendly configuration favors a conservative size and speed, a narrow whitelist, and clear permission rules. The advertised TPS guard can help protect performance, but it does not replace server policy or testing.

For a modpack author

Document the selected loader, game version, key binding, allowed blocks, and per-tool overrides in the pack instructions. Test upgrades in a copy of a world because a new Minecraft or loader version can alter input handling, block identifiers, or configuration defaults.

Version changes and upgrades

Keybinds, supported files, configuration labels, and loader builds can change between Minecraft versions. Before upgrading, record the current settings and test the new release in a separate profile. Recheck Options → Controls, confirm that the maximum size and lists survived the upgrade, and perform the small-vein test again. Do not assume that a setting documented for the separate Excavation project, such as its backtick default or its documented 64-block maximum, exists in your Ore Excavation build.

When reporting a problem, include the Minecraft Java Edition version, Forge or NeoForge version, Ore Excavation version, client or server environment, key binding, target block, held tool, and relevant size, distance, speed, cost, and list settings. Those details identify whether the failure is an installation mismatch, an input conflict, an eligibility rule, or a server restriction.
