The “latest Kindle update” is model-specific, not one universal release. Amazon lists firmware separately for each Kindle generation. In the September 2026 release notes for Kindle Scribe version 5.20.1, the clearly named new feature is handwritten sticky notes in fixed-layout ebooks and personal documents. The notes for the 2024 Kindle also list version 5.20.1, but describe performance improvements, bug fixes and general enhancements rather than the Scribe handwriting feature. Identify your Kindle before updating or assuming a feature is available.
Start by identifying your exact Kindle
Kindle software numbers can look identical while the feature set differs by model. Amazon’s update page lists a separate entry for each supported device, and older Kindles may remain on different version numbers. Check the device itself before downloading firmware or following instructions for a different model.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Open All Settings.
- Choose Device Options.
- Tap Device Info.
Write down the model name and the installed software version. Keep those two details together when you consult Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page. A version number by itself is not enough to establish that your Kindle has a particular feature. The model label is equally important because Amazon can publish a separate package and separate notes for each generation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you are checking a family member’s Kindle or a device bought secondhand, do not rely on its screen size, case, power button position or appearance to identify it. Use the name shown in Device Info. Those physical similarities are not a safe way to choose a firmware file.
What version 5.20.1 adds, by Kindle model
| Kindle model or group | Version identified in the release information | Documented changes | What you can use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle Scribe | 5.20.1, release notes dated September 2026 | Handwritten sticky notes in fixed-layout ebooks and personal documents, plus performance improvements, bug fixes and general enhancements | Use the sticky-note tool in the writing toolbar, or select text and choose the sticky-note option from the action menu |
| 2024 Kindle | 5.20.1 | Performance improvements, bug fixes and general enhancements are named in the checked notes | No comparable handwritten-sticky-note feature is named for this model |
| Some older Kindle generations | Different model-specific versions | Changes depend on the entry for that generation on Amazon’s update page | Use only the instructions and feature list attached to your model |
The important distinction is not the number 5.20.1 alone. Amazon’s Scribe notes specifically document handwriting support, while the checked 2024 Kindle notes do not. Do not treat the Scribe release note as a description of every Kindle running the same numbered firmware.

- Our most advanced Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” Colorsoft display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
- Bring ideas to life in color – The custom-built Colorsoft display delivers high-contrast, paper-like color that’s easy on the eyes without distracting flashes when writing.
- Get a pen-on-paper feel: The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
- More room to read, write, and think – Just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, with fluid performance and a large 11" display that gives you space to work comfortably.
- Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.
Amazon’s wording also matters. “Performance improvements, bug fixes and general enhancements” is a maintenance description, not a promise of a new reading or annotation control. If your model’s entry uses only that broad language, the safe conclusion is that the update improves operation behind the scenes. Do not infer a feature from a screenshot, a different model’s announcement or the fact that two devices display the same firmware number.
Use handwritten sticky notes on Kindle Scribe
On a Kindle Scribe running the release that includes the feature, handwritten sticky notes work in fixed-layout ebooks and personal documents. A fixed-layout book preserves designed page positions, typography and graphics instead of reflowing every page like a typical text-first ebook. The release notes do not say that the feature applies to every reflowable Kindle book, so the sticky-note control may not appear in those titles.
Fixed-layout content is common where the page design is part of the reading experience. Regardless of the subject, use the document’s actual format as the test: if it is not identified as a supported fixed-layout ebook or personal document, the documented sticky-note workflow may not be offered. A personal document is likewise covered by the release note only when it is opened through the Scribe’s supported reading and writing interface.
Method 1: Open the sticky-note tool
- Open a supported fixed-layout ebook or personal document on the Scribe.
- Bring up the writing toolbar.
- Select the sticky note tool.
- Write the note in the sticky-note area with the Scribe’s handwriting interface.
The tool is intended for a note attached to the page or document rather than handwriting directly over the published page. The exact placement and later management controls can vary with the document interface; the 5.20.1 release note establishes the creation methods, not a separate set of editing or export behaviors. In other words, the update confirms how to start a handwritten sticky note, but it does not promise a new set of sorting, sharing, conversion or export commands.
When the toolbar is open, look for the sticky-note control rather than a general pen mode. If you can write on a blank notebook but cannot find the sticky-note tool in a book, that difference is expected until the model, firmware and document type all match the release-note conditions.
Method 2: Select text, then use the action menu
- Press and select text in the supported document.
- Open the action menu associated with the selection.
- Choose the sticky-note option.
- Enter the handwritten note when the writing interface opens.
This method is useful when the note needs to refer to a particular sentence, label or passage. If the action menu has no sticky-note option, first confirm the model, installed version and document type rather than assuming the update failed. Selection behavior can also differ between a fixed-layout page and ordinary reflowable text, so test the feature in the content category named by Amazon.
Recommended Free Tools
These are two entry points to the same documented capability, not two different note formats. Use the toolbar when you are already working on a page and the selected-text route when the note should be associated with a particular passage. The release notes do not state that one method supports more handwriting features than the other.
What the Scribe release note actually promises
“Handwritten Sticky Notes (Fixed Layout): You can now add handwritten sticky notes in fixed layout eBooks or personal documents. Use the sticky note tool in the writing toolbar or select text and use the action menu.”
That wording limits the documented feature to the two content categories it names. It does not establish support for every ebook format, every Kindle model or every note workflow. For a Scribe owner, the practical test is whether the device is on the model’s listed firmware and whether the open document is a supported fixed-layout ebook or personal document.
The release note also does not promise that an existing note collection will be transformed, that handwritten notes will appear on another Kindle, or that every personal-document delivery route behaves identically. Keep expectations tied to the stated capability: creating a handwritten sticky note from the writing toolbar or from a selected-text action menu.
What changes on the 2024 Kindle and other non-Scribe models
The checked release notes for the 2024 Kindle list version 5.20.1 with performance improvements, bug fixes and general enhancements. They do not name handwritten sticky notes or another equivalent annotation feature. Install the update for maintenance and reliability, but do not expect the Scribe writing toolbar or its handwritten sticky-note workflow to appear on that model.
For an older Kindle, Amazon may list a different current version. The device’s generation controls which firmware file and release notes apply. If a feature is not listed in the notes for your model, regard it as unavailable unless Amazon’s model-specific documentation says otherwise.
This distinction is useful when readers compare devices. The relevant comparison for this update is whether the device is a writing-capable Kindle Scribe covered by the handwritten-annotation note, not whether another Kindle has the same display size or a similar product name. Confirm the exact Scribe model and its compatible pen before making a purchase or upgrade decision; the release notes establish the software feature but do not replace the device’s compatibility information.

Let Kindle install the update automatically
Amazon says Kindle updates normally download and install automatically when the device is connected wirelessly. This is the simplest route because the Kindle selects the update associated with its own model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm the model and current version in All Settings > Device Options > Device Info.
- Connect the Kindle to a wireless network.
- Leave it connected and allow time for the update to download and install.
- After installation, return to Device Info and confirm the software version shown there.
If the device still shows the previous version, compare its exact model with the entry on Amazon’s update page. A release appearing for one Kindle does not mean the same package is ready for another. Automatic delivery can also be staggered by model, so seeing a newer listing online is not, by itself, evidence that your particular device has failed.
Keep the Kindle available for the restart rather than beginning a manual transfer while an automatic installation is in progress. Once the device restarts, check the version again and open a document appropriate to your model before troubleshooting a missing feature.
Install a Kindle update manually
Manual installation is useful when the wireless update has not arrived. It requires the correct file for the exact Kindle model; do not substitute a package listed for a similar-looking generation.
- On a computer, open Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page and locate the entry for your exact model.
- Download the update file listed for that model.
- Connect the Kindle to the computer with its included charging cable.
- Open the Kindle drive on the computer and copy the downloaded update file onto the Kindle drive.
- Safely eject the Kindle from the computer.
- Disconnect the cable.
- On the Kindle, open Settings, tap Menu, choose Update Your Kindle, and confirm.
- Wait while the Kindle restarts. Do not interrupt the restart.
Amazon recommends charging the Kindle and leaving it overnight after the update so it can index books. Indexing can make the library appear busy for a while even though the firmware installation itself has completed. A slow or temporarily incomplete library after the restart is therefore not proof that the firmware failed.

- All-new Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” glare-free display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
- Get a pen-on-paper feel – The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
- More room to read, write, and think – At just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, it’s redesigned for comfort, with a larger 11" display and 40% faster writing and page turns.
- Work comfortably in any light – The display automatically adapts brightness to your lighting conditions. Adjust the warmth for greater comfort at night.
- Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.
The most common manual-installation mistake is choosing a file because its version number looks right while overlooking the model heading. Keep the downloaded file associated with the model name you recorded in Device Info. If the Kindle does not offer Update Your Kindle, or the command does not lead to the expected restart, stop and verify the file, its location on the Kindle drive, the safe-eject step and the model listing before trying again.
Mac transfer note for Kindle Scribe
Amazon notes that some Mac computers require additional software to transfer content to a Kindle Scribe. If the Scribe does not appear as an accessible drive after you connect it, follow Amazon’s linked transfer instructions for that Mac configuration rather than repeatedly copying the file or using a package from another model. The Mac caveat affects the transfer step; it does not change which firmware listing belongs to the Scribe.
Why a feature may be missing after updating
| What you see | Most likely explanation | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The sticky-note tool is not present | The Kindle is not a Scribe, the model is not on the release that documents the feature, or the open item is not a fixed-layout ebook or personal document | Check Device Info, compare the model-specific release notes, and test a supported document |
| The same version number appears, but behavior differs | Firmware numbers are reused across model-specific listings | Verify the model name beside the version, not just the numeric label |
| The update did not arrive over Wi-Fi | The device has not yet received its model-specific automatic package | Leave it connected wirelessly, then use the exact-model manual procedure if needed |
| The manual update option does not produce the expected restart | The file may not be on the Kindle drive or may belong to another model | Reconnect, copy the file again from the correct model listing, safely eject, disconnect and retry |
| The Kindle is still processing books afterward | The library is being indexed after the firmware change | Keep the device charged and leave it overnight, as Amazon recommends |
| The Scribe works in notebooks but not in a book | The open book may be reflowable rather than fixed-layout | Try a fixed-layout ebook or personal document covered by the release note |
| The action menu has no sticky-note command | No text is selected, or the content and firmware do not meet the documented conditions | Select text, confirm the model and version, and test supported content |
Work through these checks in order. Reinstalling firmware will not add a Scribe-only feature to a non-Scribe Kindle, and it will not turn a reflowable title into a fixed-layout document. Establish eligibility first, then investigate installation.
A safe checklist before you update
- Record the model name and current software version from Device Info.
- Read the release entry for that exact model; do not infer features from another Kindle’s notes.
- For a Scribe, confirm that the document is a fixed-layout ebook or personal document before troubleshooting the sticky-note control.
- Use wireless installation when possible so the device receives the appropriate package.
- For a manual install, download only the file listed for your model and use the included charging cable.
- Safely eject the Kindle before disconnecting it.
- Keep it charged after the restart and allow overnight indexing if the library is still processing.
- After the restart, check the displayed version again instead of relying on the download’s file name.
- On a Mac with a Scribe that does not mount as a drive, use Amazon’s additional transfer instructions.
How to decide whether this update matters to you
You own a Kindle Scribe
Version 5.20.1 is significant if you annotate fixed-layout books or personal documents by hand. After confirming the model and firmware, try both documented entry points: the writing-toolbar sticky-note tool and the selection action menu. If you mainly read ordinary reflowable novels, the named sticky-note addition may not change your workflow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use the document type as your first diagnostic. If a fixed-layout title shows the control, the update is working as described. If a reflowable title does not, that absence is consistent with the release note and is not necessarily an installation problem.
You own the 2024 Kindle
Install the update for the listed performance, bug-fix and general-maintenance changes. The checked notes do not identify the Scribe handwriting feature for this model, so do not look for a comparable writing toolbar. A successful installation may be most visible as smoother operation or corrected faults rather than a new button.

You own an older Kindle
Start with the model-identification steps and then use the older device’s own listing. Amazon’s page may show a different version number and a different set of release notes. Treat the model-specific entry as the authority for both installation and feature availability. Avoid forcing a newer package onto an older generation simply because the product names sound similar.

Is version 5.20.1 the same update on every Kindle?
No. Amazon lists firmware by model. The Scribe notes for version 5.20.1 document handwritten sticky notes, while the checked 2024 Kindle notes describe performance improvements, bug fixes and general enhancements. Always pair the number with the model name.
Can I add handwritten sticky notes to any Kindle book?
The documented Scribe feature applies to fixed-layout ebooks and personal documents. Amazon’s wording does not extend it to every reflowable ebook or every Kindle model.
Where do I find the sticky-note command on a Scribe?
Open the writing toolbar and choose the sticky-note tool, or select text and choose the sticky-note option from the action menu. Both methods are named in Amazon’s Scribe 5.20.1 release note.
Why does my 2024 Kindle show 5.20.1 but no handwritten notes?
The checked 2024 Kindle notes do not name the Scribe handwriting feature. The same numeric version does not guarantee identical features across models.
How do I update a Kindle manually?
Download the file for the exact model from Amazon, connect with the included charging cable, copy the file to the Kindle drive, safely eject, disconnect, then choose Settings, Menu and Update Your Kindle. The device restarts when the update runs.
What should I do if my Kindle is still indexing afterward?
Charge it and leave it overnight. Amazon recommends allowing that time for books to be indexed after an update.

Does a Mac need special software to update a Scribe?
Amazon notes that some Macs require additional software to transfer content to a Scribe. If the device does not appear as a drive, use Amazon’s linked transfer instructions for the affected Mac setup.
Should I reinstall the update if the feature is missing?
First verify the model, installed version and document type. A non-Scribe model, a different firmware listing or a reflowable book will not gain the documented Scribe feature through repeated installation.
Bottom line
There is no single feature list for every “latest Kindle update.” The clearest new capability in the September 2026 version 5.20.1 notes is handwritten sticky notes on Kindle Scribe, available in fixed-layout ebooks and personal documents through the writing toolbar or a selected-text action menu. Other models with 5.20.1 may receive maintenance improvements without that feature. Identify your Kindle, check its matching Amazon release entry, let it update over Wi-Fi or follow the exact-model manual transfer procedure, and judge the result against the notes for that device.
