On a Mac, the emoji picker is called Character Viewer. Place the insertion point where you want the symbol, press Fn/Globe-E or Control-Command-Space, search for a description such as laughing face, then select the result. In the expanded viewer, double-clicking inserts it. Click and hold an emoji to choose variations such as skin tones.
What the Mac emoji picker is called
macOS does not label its emoji tool simply “Emoji Picker.” The built-in interface is Character Viewer. It contains emoji as well as other symbols and characters, so the same window can be used whether you are writing a message, editing a document, entering a search term, or completing another text field.
The viewer inserts a character at the active insertion point. That means the first step is always to click in the message, document, browser field, or other app where the emoji should appear. If the cursor is not in a text field, the viewer may open but there will be nowhere for the selected character to go.

Open Character Viewer with a keyboard shortcut
The quickest way to open the picker while you are typing is a keyboard shortcut:

- Click the text field or document location that should receive the emoji.
- Press Fn/Globe-E. On a keyboard with a Globe key, use that key; on a keyboard labeled Fn, use Fn.
- If that shortcut is not convenient, press Control-Command-Space instead.
Both shortcuts open Character Viewer. The keyboard route is generally the fastest option when your hands are already on the keyboard because it avoids opening an app menu or moving to the menu bar.
Open it from the app menu
When you prefer a visible command, use the menu bar:
- Place the insertion point in the destination text field.
- Choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols.
- Character Viewer opens, ready for you to search or browse.
This route is useful when you do not remember a shortcut or are learning the feature. The command is available through the current app’s Edit menu, so the app must be active before you open the menu.

Searching is usually faster than browsing categories when you know what the emoji represents. Character Viewer accepts a word or a phrase in its search field. Apple’s example is laughing face; entering a descriptive phrase brings up matching results without requiring you to inspect every category.

- Open Character Viewer with Fn/Globe-E, Control-Command-Space, or Edit > Emoji & Symbols.
- Click the search field in the viewer.
- Type a plain-language description, such as
laughing face. - Review the matching characters.
- Select the emoji you want. In the expanded Character Viewer, double-click the character or symbol to insert it.
Use the shortest description that identifies the idea you need. A phrase can be more useful than a single broad word when many results share the same subject. If a search does not give the expected result, try another everyday description rather than scrolling through every category.
Insert the result into your text
After you find the right character, select it to insert it at the active insertion point. Apple’s instructions for the expanded Character Viewer specify a double-click on the character or symbol. If the emoji appears in the wrong place, remove it, click the intended text location, and open the viewer again; the picker follows the current insertion point.
Character Viewer can insert more than colorful emoji. Its broader character and symbol collection means search results may include non-emoji symbols or alternate characters. Check the visual result before inserting when several similar entries are displayed.

Choose skin tones and other emoji variations
Many people emoji have selectable variations, including skin-tone options. To inspect them, click and hold the emoji in Character Viewer. A variation menu appears where supported, allowing you to choose the version you want before insertion.

- Find the base emoji by browsing or searching.
- Click and hold it rather than releasing immediately.
- Choose the desired variation from the choices that appear.
- Release or select the variation to insert it.
The click-and-hold action only reveals alternatives for characters that support them. If no variation menu appears, that emoji may not have a selectable version in Character Viewer.
Use inline emoji suggestions while typing
Fn/Globe-E has a second behavior in Apple’s documentation. When you are typing a commonly used word or phrase, the shortcut can show inline emoji suggestions instead of immediately presenting the full viewer.
- Type a word or phrase in a text field.
- Press Fn/Globe-E.
- If macOS offers an inline emoji suggestion, press Return to accept it.
- If there is no suggestion for the text you entered, Character Viewer opens instead.
This behavior depends on the text you typed. It is not a separate picker that must be enabled; it is an alternate result of the same shortcut. When you need to search deliberately for a phrase such as “laughing face,” use the full Character Viewer search field.
Make Character Viewer available from the desktop
You can add the Input menu to the menu bar and use it to open Character Viewer without first relying on a shortcut inside an app. Apple places this control in Keyboard settings.

- Open Keyboard settings.
- In the Text Input area, choose Edit.
- Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar.
- Use the new Input menu in the menu bar to open Character Viewer from the desktop.
This option is useful when you want a persistent, visible access point. It also gives you a menu-based fallback if a shortcut is difficult to remember or if you are working at the desktop before choosing a text field.
Customize the expanded viewer
The expanded Character Viewer can be adjusted to fit how you use emoji and symbols. Apple documents four useful controls:
- Categories: Choose which categories appear so the list reflects the characters you actually browse.
- Character size: Change the display size when the default preview is difficult to inspect.
- Favorites: Add frequently used characters for quicker access.
- Frequently used characters: Clear the frequently used list when you want to remove its history.
Customization affects how the viewer is organized and displayed; it does not change the shortcut or menu command used to open it. Search remains the efficient choice for a known emoji, while categories and favorites help when you are browsing or repeatedly inserting the same characters.

Troubleshoot common problems
The shortcut does not open the full picker
Fn/Globe-E can produce an inline suggestion when the text you just typed matches a commonly used word or phrase. Press Return if that suggestion is the one you want. If no suggestion appears, Apple says the Character Viewer opens. When you need the full viewer immediately, use Control-Command-Space or the Edit > Emoji & Symbols menu command.

The emoji is inserted in the wrong place
Character Viewer inserts at the active insertion point. Before opening it, click exactly where the character belongs. In a document, place the cursor between the intended words; in a message or form, click inside the field itself. If you opened the viewer before selecting a text field, close it, set the insertion point, and reopen it.
You cannot find the emoji by scrolling
Use the search field and enter a descriptive word or phrase. “Laughing face” is Apple’s documented example. Searching avoids relying on memory of which category contains a character and is especially helpful when several related emoji are grouped together.
The skin-tone choices are missing
Click and hold the emoji instead of clicking it once. Variations appear only for emoji that support them. If holding does not show alternatives, that particular character may not provide selectable skin-tone or other variants.

Enable Show Input menu in menu bar through Keyboard settings > Text Input > Edit. The Input menu then provides a desktop route to Character Viewer.
The viewer is crowded or hard to scan
Use the expanded viewer’s customization controls. Limit the visible categories, adjust character size, add useful characters to Favorites, or clear frequently used characters. These controls change the viewer’s presentation without requiring a different insertion method.
A reliable workflow for everyday use
For a known emoji, the following sequence minimizes navigation:
- Click the destination text field.
- Press Control-Command-Space or Fn/Globe-E.
- Enter a descriptive search phrase.
- Select the matching result; double-click it in the expanded viewer.
- If a variation is needed, click and hold the emoji and choose the appropriate option before inserting.
For an emoji you use repeatedly, add it to Favorites in the expanded viewer. For exploratory browsing, customize categories and use the larger character display. For a quick contextual choice, type the relevant word or phrase first and try Fn/Globe-E; accept an inline suggestion with Return when it matches what you intended.
