Start by choosing the H&R Block app that fits your task: use MyBlock to manage tax documents, communicate with a tax professional, or track return progress; use H&R Block Tax Prep if you plan to prepare your own return. Download the matching app from your device’s official app store, then follow its current prompts to sign in or create an account.
Which H&R Block app should you use?
The apps serve different workflows, so choose based on what you want to do rather than treating their names as interchangeable. H&R Block describes MyBlock as its year-round portal for managing tax information and working with a tax pro. H&R Block Tax Prep is for people preparing their own taxes and includes document import or upload features.
- Choose MyBlock to organize or share tax documents, message a tax pro, manage appointments, or track return progress.
- Choose Tax Prep if you intend to prepare and file your return yourself.
Features can change by tax year. Check the current app-store listing and the app’s in-product description before you begin.
How do you download the app and sign in?
- Open the official app store on your phone. H&R Block directs users to download MyBlock from Apple’s App Store or Google Play. For Tax Prep, find the current H&R Block listing in your device’s official store.
- Install the app that matches your workflow. Confirm the app name and description before downloading.
- Open it and follow the on-screen prompts. Sign in to an existing account or create one if prompted. H&R Block says a MyBlock account is required for virtual work with a tax pro and for filing through its online product; account requirements may differ by task.
The available official instructions do not establish a reliable set of current iPhone-versus-Android screens or tap-by-tap navigation labels. Follow the prompts shown in your installed version rather than relying on a possibly outdated screenshot guide. See MyBlock Benefits for the account and workflow overview.

How do you upload tax documents?
Using MyBlock or Tax Pro Review
MyBlock can be used to store, organize, and share tax documents. If you are using Tax Pro Review, H&R Block says you can upload PDF or Word files, or take photos of forms and send them through the secure Message Center. The Message Center is also available from a logged-in online account. Follow the instructions shown for your specific product flow; file types and upload directions for one workflow should not be assumed to apply to another.
For details, see H&R Block’s guide to submitting documents using Tax Pro Review.

Using the separate W-2 photo-capture flow
H&R Block also documents a W-2 photo-capture option for its tax software. In that flow, take a photo, open the secure link sent by text, follow the on-screen steps, and confirm the captured W-2 information. H&R Block says this particular flow requires internet access but does not require an app. It is separate from general app uploads, so use it only when the software presents that option. See the Photo Capture instructions.
Can you work with a tax pro in MyBlock?
Yes. H&R Block describes MyBlock as a way to start taxes independently or get matched with a tax pro, share documents, message the pro, and then review, sign, and file the return. You can also use it to manage appointments. Available services, fees, and eligibility depend on the current product and tax-year terms; check those details in the live product flow before choosing a service.

Before signing, review your entries and the completed return carefully. Signing is part of the workflow that leads to filing, so resolve errors or missing information first. The MyBlock Benefits page outlines the app’s supported tax-pro and document-management functions.
How do you track an H&R Block return or refund?
MyBlock supports return tracking, but return progress and refund progress are not the same status. For an e-filed return, H&R Block’s instructions say to open the original return in the software and check its status. Once the IRS has accepted it, use H&R Block’s Where’s My Refund tool or the IRS to check refund status.
H&R Block says refund information is usually available 72 hours after the IRS acknowledges an e-filed return. That is general guidance, not a promised date for any individual refund. See H&R Block’s refund-status instructions for the steps and links.

Decide first whether you want to prepare the return yourself or work with a tax professional. Then consider whether you need document import or sharing, ongoing messages, appointments, or return tracking. The app descriptions establish the broad distinction between MyBlock and Tax Prep, but they do not provide a complete feature-by-feature comparison for every tax year. Use the current product screens to confirm the details that matter to you.
