Equip the Grappling Hook in a Quick Use slot, aim at a reachable surface, and activate it using the control shown by your current bindings. The rope creates a pivot rather than pulling you in a straight line: you can climb toward the anchor, descend, or swing across a gap. Keep stamina for the approach, expect the rope to catch on geometry, and do not assume reaching the anchor automatically produces a ledge grab.
How to use the Grappling Hook: the reliable sequence
The Grappling Hook was added with the Frozen Trail update. Its basic operation is simple, but successful movement depends on the surface you choose, your momentum, your stamina, and the shape of the landing area.
1. Put it in a Quick Use slot
A current AllThingsHow guide places the item in a Quick Use slot. Open your loadout before deploying and confirm that the Grappling Hook, rather than another gadget, is selected. The slot and acquisition details come from a secondary guide and may change in a live-service patch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Find an anchor surface
Point at a solid, reachable part of the environment: a roof edge, wall, platform, beam, or other piece of geometry that gives the line a clear path. Favor broad surfaces over thin rails or cluttered balconies. A hook that technically reaches a protruding object can leave the rope wrapped around an inconvenient corner.

3. Aim until the game presents its current prompt
There is no verified universal keyboard, PlayStation, or Xbox button sequence in the published material available for this guide. ARC Raiders supports remappable controls, and the prompt can change with your bindings. Use the on-screen activation hint or check the current Controls settings rather than copying a button from an older video.
4. Activate the equipped gadget
Press the activation input shown for the selected Quick Use slot. A successful attachment establishes an anchor and a rope. The device is not described as a one-button teleport: your movement after attachment determines whether you climb, hang, descend, or begin a swing.
5. Confirm the rope before committing
Look for the visible line and the change in your movement. If there is no line, you probably aimed at an invalid surface, exceeded the available reach, or activated a different item. Reposition instead of repeatedly spending the gadget into the same piece of cover.
What the rope actually does
PC Gamer’s Morgan Park described the Grappling Hook during a three-hour Frozen Trail preview on October 7, 2026, as a simulated rope. The attachment point functions as a pivot, so the result is more controllable than a direct pull and less automatic than a fixed zip line.
Climbing toward the anchor
Move toward the attachment point to shorten the line and rise toward it. This is the fastest way to gain vertical height when the anchor is above you, but it does not guarantee that your character will mantle the top surface. Treat the rope’s endpoint as a position you must approach, not as a promised roof landing.
Descending on the line
Move away from the anchor or let your character hang lower to descend. Descending can be useful for reaching a lower balcony or changing your angle before a swing. Keep a destination in view; dropping below the edge of a structure can leave you with fewer options if the rope disconnects.
Swinging across a gap
Once attached, the rope supports pendulum movement. Build lateral momentum, then release or redirect toward the opposite side when the landing route is open. The anchor is the center of the arc, so a high anchor generally gives you more clearance than one placed near the lip of the gap.

Redeploying in midair
Park reported that the preview build allowed the Grappling Hook to be redeployed while airborne, making chained swings possible. That observation came from limited hands-on coverage, not a controlled test or a permanent specification. If the current game permits another deployment, use it to catch a second anchor after the first swing; if no prompt appears, assume a patch, cooldown, resource rule, or state restriction has changed the behavior.
Aiming for a dependable attachment
Use the center of a broad surface
Aiming at the middle of a wall or roof gives the rope more tolerance than aiming at a narrow lip. Broad anchors also reduce the chance that the line will intersect an overhang, railing, balcony, or other protruding geometry.
Plan the rope’s path, not just its endpoint
Two surfaces can be the same distance away but behave differently if an obstruction sits between you and the anchor. Before firing, trace the likely line visually. Avoid signs, decorative beams, balcony corners, and roof furniture when a clear section is available.
Respect the published reach qualification
AllThingsHow’s guide lists a 20 m reach for the Grappling Hook. The official Frozen Trail update reviewed for this article does not confirm that number, so treat it as a secondary-guide figure rather than an official specification. In practice, aim well inside the apparent limit when a failed attachment would expose you.

- For a climb: choose a point above and slightly forward of your intended platform.
- For a swing: choose a point that leaves a clear arc toward the far side, rather than one directly over an obstacle.
- For a descent: attach above the lower destination and keep the drop zone visible.
How to swing without wasting stamina
A current secondary guide says swinging, climbing, and rappelling consume stamina. The exact drain rate is not established in the published material, so manage the resource as a limited movement budget rather than assuming the rope is free.
Start with a full bar when possible
Recover before a long crossing if the route allows it. A depleted bar can leave you unable to continue climbing or make a second movement correction. Do not begin a chain swing merely because the first anchor attached; check whether you have enough stamina to finish the route.
Use short corrections
Large, repeated directional inputs can turn a controlled arc into an overcorrection. Make small adjustments while you watch the destination, then commit when your trajectory points through the open landing area.

Separate height gain from lateral travel
If the far side is higher, climb first and swing second. Trying to gain all the height and distance at once can stretch the movement sequence and spend more stamina than a two-stage route. If the destination is lower, a controlled descent followed by a short swing may be safer than a high-speed release.

The last few metres are where you may need to correct for a railing, a roof lip, or a missed ledge. Reserve enough stamina to change your position rather than arriving with no ability to adjust.
Landing safely: why reaching the anchor is not enough
The preview coverage reports two important limitations: the rope could snag on protruding balconies, and reaching the top of the rope did not always result in a ledge grab. The following landing method is cautious guidance inferred from those observations, not a guaranteed mechanic.
Choose a wide landing zone
Prefer the center of a roof, courtyard, or broad platform. A narrow railing or tiny ledge gives you little room to correct when the rope angle is imperfect. If the only available surface is narrow, approach slowly and leave room to swing around the edge instead of aiming directly at it.
Approach from the open side
Look for a trajectory that reaches the destination without passing behind a balcony or through a forest of beams. A clear route reduces the risk that the line catches before your character reaches the intended height.

Reaching the rope’s upper end does not guarantee a mantle. Stay focused on where your character will be after release and whether the ledge is actually clear. If the game does not present a grab or mantle, use the remaining line to reposition rather than assuming the animation will complete automatically.
Expect a recovery, not perfection
If the rope snags, first identify whether the obstruction is the anchor, the line, or the landing lip. A small change in angle can be enough; otherwise detach or redirect toward a safer surface if your current state permits it. Avoid spending every movement option on a single obstructed balcony.

Controls and platform bindings
No source reviewed for this article documents a verified universal Grappling Hook key or controller button. That omission matters because a copied sequence can be wrong after a rebinding, platform update, or interface change.
- Open ARC Raiders’ current Settings or Controls menu.
- Locate the action assigned to Quick Use or gadget activation.
- Confirm which slot contains the Grappling Hook.
- Enter a safe area and watch for the on-screen prompt while aiming at a valid surface.
- If the prompt conflicts with your expected input, follow the displayed binding rather than an older guide.
The game’s prompt is the authoritative input reference for your installation. A missing prompt usually indicates an invalid target, an unselected gadget, insufficient reach, or a state in which the item cannot be used.
Grappling Hook versus Snap Hook
The two gadgets occupy different movement roles. Embark’s Frozen Trail 2.0 update describes Snap Hook as a burst-mobility tool and explains that the new Grappling Hook should have an identity outside a linear upgrade path. PC Gamer’s preview presents the Grappling Hook as a rope-and-pivot system, not a direct pull.
| Attribute | Grappling Hook | Snap Hook |
|---|---|---|
| Movement model | Simulated rope with an anchor pivot; the player climbs, descends, and swings. | Burst mobility for quickly closing distance or traversing. |
| Player control after activation | High: momentum, rope position, and release angle shape the route. | More direct and immediate, according to Embark’s role description. |
| Published range figure | 20 m listed by AllThingsHow; not confirmed by the official update. | 18 m after the Frozen Trail 2.0 change, according to Embark. |
| Durability consumption | Not stated in the sources reviewed. | 4% per use after the update, up from 2%. |
| Power cost | Not stated in the sources reviewed. | 60 after the update, up from 50. |
| Best use | Planned vertical movement, pendulum crossings, and route correction. | Fast, predictable bursts when you need to close distance or traverse. |
The Snap Hook figures in the table are not Grappling Hook specifications. Do not use its range, durability, or power values to estimate the rope gadget’s behavior.
How to obtain the Grappling Hook
If you are still looking for the item, AllThingsHow’s October 12, 2026 guide reports several routes: trader barter, quest supplies, Reward Pass rewards or a blueprint, research, and crafting at Utility Station Level 1. These are secondary-guide details and should be checked against the current in-game menus because acquisition paths can change.

Troubleshooting common failures
The hook will not attach
- Move closer and target the center of a broad surface.
- Check that the Grappling Hook is selected in the Quick Use slot.
- Look for the current activation prompt; do not assume a platform button.
- Try a different angle if a railing, sign, or balcony blocks the line.
The rope attaches but movement stops
- Check whether the line is caught on intervening geometry.
- Use small directional corrections instead of holding one direction indefinitely.
- Look at stamina before attempting another climb or swing.
You reach the top but do not land
- Do not assume the ledge grab is automatic.
- Move toward a wider section of the platform if the rope still allows repositioning.
- Choose a different anchor on the next attempt, away from protruding edges.
Midair redeployment is unavailable
The no-cooldown or unrestricted redeployment behavior was reported in a preview build. A live patch may have added a cooldown, a resource requirement, or a state restriction. Check the current prompt and patch notes instead of treating the preview behavior as permanent.

You run out of stamina during the crossing
Stop attempting long chains from a partial bar. Recover first, select a nearer anchor, or break the route into separate climbs and swings. There is no published stamina-cost number that lets you calculate an exact safe distance.
A practical training drill
Use a low-risk area to learn the rope before attempting a contested crossing.
- Equip the Grappling Hook and confirm its current activation prompt.
- Attach to a broad wall at a moderate distance.
- Climb halfway, then descend, so you can feel how the line responds to direction changes.
- Repeat with a lateral movement and observe the pendulum arc.
- Attempt a short swing to a wide platform, keeping stamina for the final correction.
- Try a second anchor only if the current build presents a midair redeployment prompt.
- Repeat the route from a different angle to identify balconies, beams, or roof edges that snag the line.
This drill teaches the decisions that matter most: selecting a clean anchor, preserving stamina, and judging the landing area rather than relying on an automatic mantle.
What is confirmed and what can change
Embark’s Frozen Trail announcement establishes that the Grappling Hook was introduced as new gear. Embark’s October 8, 2026 Frozen Trail 2.0 update establishes the Snap Hook balance changes and the design distinction between the two gadgets. Morgan Park’s October 7 PC Gamer preview supplies the rope, pivot, snagging, ledge-grab, and midair-redeployment observations from a limited hands-on session. AllThingsHow’s October 12 guide supplies the secondary details about a 20 m reach, stamina use, Quick Use placement, and acquisition.
Because the item is new and ARC Raiders is updated live, treat exact controls, reach, stamina behavior, redeployment rules, and acquisition requirements as version-sensitive. The safest permanent habits are to follow the current on-screen prompt, aim for clear surfaces, keep a stamina reserve, and land on open ground rather than assuming the rope will finish the climb for you.
Bottom line
Think of the Grappling Hook as a steerable rope, not a teleport. Attach to a clear anchor, climb or descend to set your height, swing with controlled momentum, and preserve stamina for the final approach. Wide landing zones and clean rope paths matter more than simply reaching the maximum distance.
