Use the Galaxy Z Fold8 closed for supported quick tasks on its cover screen, then open it when you need room for multiple apps. Samsung’s Fold8-specific One UI 9 guidance describes two- and three-app split-screen layouts, a Taskbar and saved App Pairs on the main display. The Taskbar and split-screen or pop-up view are not available on the cover screen.

Choose the screen that fits the task

The Fold8 has two distinct work surfaces: a 5.5-inch cover screen for using the phone while it is closed, and a 7.6-inch main screen for tasks that benefit from more space. Those are diagonal measurements; Samsung notes that the viewable area is smaller because of the rounded corners and camera hole. Samsung lists the cover display’s proportions as 10:16 and the main display’s as 4:3.

For a quick message, a short web lookup or another supported single-app task, the closed phone keeps the interaction simple. Open it when you want to keep two or three supported apps visible together, adjust how much space they receive, or use the Taskbar to reach favorite and recent apps. This is a choice about workspace and controls, not a claim that one screen is faster or performs better.

Samsung describes the cover screen as 10:16 and the main display as 4:3. The broader main-screen shape provides a different workspace, but the available guidance does not establish a precise performance difference between the displays.

The practical distinction is less about choosing a universally “better” screen and more about how many things you need to see at once. If the next step is simply reading a message or checking a page, staying closed can be convenient. If you need to compare information, take notes alongside a browser, or keep a video visible while replying, opening the device gives you Samsung’s documented Multi window controls.

The display measurements are diagonal specifications, not a promise about how much usable space a particular app will occupy. Samsung notes that rounded corners and the camera hole reduce viewable area. The listed proportions—10:16 for the cover and 4:3 for the main display—also describe the shape of each screen, not a multitasking speed or app-compatibility rating.

Use the cover screen for supported quick tasks

When the Fold8 is closed, use the cover screen for an individual task that is convenient to handle without opening the device. Samsung’s setup guidance suggests having Messages, Chrome, WhatsApp, Samsung Wallet and Camera ready for quick, one-handed use. These are examples of apps to consider, not a guarantee that every app or feature is available in every region or configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the cover screen as the quick-access surface in this workflow. You can check a message, look something up in Chrome, open the camera or use another supported app without first unfolding the phone. The examples come from Samsung’s setup guidance; they do not mean those apps have identical features or that every activity within them will continue in the same way after you open the device.

App continuity can let you begin a task while the phone is closed and continue on the main display after opening it. Treat this as support for compatible apps and activities rather than a promise that every screen, app state or task transfers seamlessly. If you open the device and the activity does not continue, the app or activity may not support that transition.

For example, you might start reading or working in a supported app on the cover and then open the Fold8 because you want the larger main display. App continuity may carry the supported activity forward. It is still sensible to expect to resume the task manually if the app does not continue where you left off; Samsung’s guidance does not promise continuity for every app or every activity.

Do not look for the Taskbar or split-screen and pop-up view controls on the cover screen. Samsung’s Fold8 guide says the Taskbar is not supported there, and Samsung’s general Fold support guidance says split-screen and pop-up view are not supported on the front screen. The cover screen is useful for supported quick use, but Samsung documents the multitasking workspace on the open device’s main display.

Open two or three apps in split screen

Samsung’s Fold8 One UI 9 guide describes starting a split-screen layout from Recent apps on the main display. The exact availability of an app depends on its support for Multi window; Samsung cautions that some third-party apps may not be compatible.

  1. Open the Fold8. Split-screen and pop-up view are not supported on the cover/front screen. Use the main display for this workflow.
  2. Open Recent apps. Tap the Recent apps button on the main display to view the apps available in the recent-apps view.
  3. Choose the app to keep visible. Tap that app’s icon above its preview, then choose Open in split screen view. This begins the layout with the app you selected.
  4. Add another app. Select a supported app for the second pane. To create a three-app arrangement, select another supported app when prompted. The available choices depend on app compatibility.
  5. Set the pane sizes. Drag the divider between apps until each has the space you need. You can give more room to the pane you are concentrating on and less to the one you are consulting.
  6. Use divider options if needed. Tap the divider to access additional options, including switching app positions and saving the combination as an App Pair.

The order matters in a simple, practical way: first choose the app you want to start with, then select the second supported app, and add a third only if the additional pane is useful. If the split-screen choice is absent from an app’s icon menu, or an app is not offered as a selection, compatibility may be the reason. Samsung specifically warns that some third-party apps may not support Multi window, so the workflow is not guaranteed for every app installed on the phone.

Samsung gives examples such as comparing information across apps, browsing while taking notes, or watching a video while replying to messages. These illustrate intended uses, not a guarantee that every particular app combination will work. If an app does not appear as a choice or the split-screen option is unavailable, try another supported app and check the options on the device.

For a comparison task, place the two relevant apps in the layout and resize the divider so the information you need to inspect is easy to see. For reference work, Samsung’s browsing-and-notes example suggests keeping the source and your notes visible together rather than repeatedly changing apps. For a video-and-messages task, the same principle applies: make enough room for the activity you are actively using, while keeping the other pane available. These are examples from Samsung’s description, not independent compatibility tests for specific apps.

A three-app layout is an option when a task calls for three supported apps at the same time. It also means the available display space is being shared among more panes. If one of the apps becomes difficult to use in the layout, adjust the divider where available or return to a two-app arrangement. Samsung documents three-app split screen, but does not promise that every three-app combination will be supported or equally convenient.

Adjust a layout and save an App Pair

A split-screen arrangement is not limited to equal-sized panes: drag its divider to give more room to the app that matters most. If you want to change which app occupies which position, tap the divider and use the available switch option.

Use the divider as the layout’s main adjustment point. After the apps are open together, drag it to change how the available area is divided. That is useful when one app contains the information you are reading or editing and the other is there for reference. You can refine the balance as the task changes rather than treating the initial split as fixed.

The divider also gives access to options beyond resizing. Samsung says tapping it can reveal options including switching app positions and saving the combination as an App Pair. If you want to change which app appears in which position, use the switch option shown there. The names or precise presentation of controls can vary with software version, so follow the options displayed on your Fold8.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a combination you expect to use again, save it as an App Pair from the divider’s options. Samsung’s guide describes placing the pair on the Taskbar, Home screen or Apps Edge panel, so you can reopen the combination from a convenient location. The available destinations and labels may differ by configuration.

An App Pair is useful when the same two or three supported apps regularly belong together—for example, a browser and notes app for reference work. Saving the combination reduces the setup steps the next time you want that arrangement; it does not make an incompatible app work in Multi window.

Choose a destination that fits how you return to the task. Samsung lists the Taskbar, Home screen and Apps Edge panel as possible places for an App Pair. The Taskbar is a main-display feature, while the Home screen or Apps Edge panel may suit a different preference. Menu labels and configurations can vary, so use the destinations available on your device rather than relying on a path from another model or region.

Saving a pair is most useful when the combination itself is repeatable. If you only need two apps together once, opening them from Recent apps may be enough. If you frequently return to the same browser-and-notes arrangement or another supported combination, an App Pair offers a quicker way to reopen it. It saves access to the combination; it is not a way to bypass Multi window compatibility limits.

Turn on and use the Taskbar

Samsung says the Fold8 Taskbar provides access to favorite apps, recently used apps and App Pairs on the main display. To enable it, use Settings > Display > Taskbar. The Taskbar is not available on the cover screen, so this setup applies to the open-device workflow.

Samsung describes the Taskbar as a shortcut to favorite and recently used apps while using the Fold8. In a multitasking session, it can also provide access to saved App Pairs. This makes it useful when you want to reach an app or a saved combination without treating the cover screen as the place to manage split-screen work.

Once enabled, use the Taskbar to reach an app or a saved pair while working on the main display. If you do not see the setting where expected, Samsung cautions that menu paths and configurations can vary by country, model and software version. Confirm that you are using the Fold8’s main-display settings and consult the device’s current menus rather than assuming another model’s instructions will match exactly.

The setup path in Samsung’s Fold8 guide is Settings > Display > Taskbar. If your menus use different labels or the option does not appear in that location, do not assume that split screen itself is unavailable; Samsung cautions that names, paths and configurations can vary by country, model and software version. Check the current settings on the device and make sure you are following instructions for the Fold8 and the software version it is running.

The Taskbar should be understood as a main-display convenience, not a control that follows the Fold8 to every screen. Samsung specifically says it is not supported on the cover screen. If your aim is to open two or three apps together, unfold the device and use the Recent apps split-screen workflow. If your aim is simply to do a supported quick task, the cover screen remains the appropriate surface.

Build a practical Fold8 workflow

For a quick check

Keep the phone closed for a supported task such as checking a message or opening the camera. There is no need to open the device merely to use a split-screen or Taskbar feature, because those controls are designed for the main display.

Samsung’s suggested cover-screen apps—Messages, Chrome, WhatsApp, Samsung Wallet and Camera—give you a starting point for deciding what to keep handy. Choose a supported app that matches the brief task, complete it on the cover screen, and open the Fold8 only if you need the wider main display or a feature available there. This keeps the two-screen workflow simple without implying that every app supports every kind of continuity.

For a task that starts on the cover screen

Begin on the cover screen if the app and activity support it. Open the Fold8 when you want the larger workspace; supported app continuity may carry the task onto the main display. Do not assume this behavior for every app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the activity continues, carry on using it on the main display. If it does not, reopen or resume it manually. Samsung describes App continuity for supported apps and activities, not as a universal handoff for every app state. This distinction matters when a task depends on a particular screen or action: the Fold8’s ability to open to a larger display does not itself guarantee that every app will transfer its current view.

For two apps used together

Open the phone, launch the first app in split-screen view from Recent apps, and select the second supported app. Resize the panes with the divider. If you repeat the same combination, save it as an App Pair and choose an available destination such as the Taskbar, Home screen or Apps Edge panel.

A useful way to set up a two-app session is to decide which app is primary before opening Recent apps. Select that app first, then add the other supported app. After the panes appear, adjust the divider according to what you need to read or do. If the combination will be useful again, save it from the divider options; if it is temporary, there is no need to create a saved shortcut.

For three apps

Use the same Recent apps workflow and select a third supported app when prompted. Three panes divide the available space, so choose this arrangement when you need to refer to several apps at once; if one app needs more room, adjust the divider or use a simpler two-app layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before choosing three panes, consider whether you need all three apps visible at the same moment. Samsung documents a three-app layout, but each app must support Multi window, and the main display’s available area is shared by the panes. If you only need to alternate between two apps and a third is not part of the immediate task, a two-app layout is the clearer choice. If all three are relevant, use the divider controls to adjust the layout where available.

What to check when multitasking controls are missing

  • You are on the cover screen: Open the device and use the main display. The Taskbar and split-screen or pop-up view are not supported on the front screen.
  • The split-screen choice is missing for an app: Samsung notes that some third-party apps may not support Multi window. Try a different supported app and check the app-icon menu in Recent apps.
  • The Taskbar setting or a destination differs: Samsung says feature names, paths and configurations can vary with country, model and software version. The Fold8 guide describes One UI 9 and was last updated October 9, 2026; labels can differ on other software versions.
  • A task does not continue after opening the phone: App continuity applies to supported apps and activities, not necessarily every app or activity. Continue the task manually if it does not transfer.

When troubleshooting, check the screen and the app separately. First confirm that the phone is open and that you are using the main display; the cover screen is outside the documented Taskbar and split-screen workflow. Then check whether the particular app offers Open in split screen view from its Recent apps icon. If it does not, try a different supported app rather than assuming that the whole device’s Multi window feature is unavailable.

If you can create a split screen but cannot find an expected shortcut afterward, look at the divider options and the available destinations for an App Pair. Samsung lists the Taskbar, Home screen and Apps Edge panel, but the labels and configuration can vary. The Taskbar itself is intended for the main display, so it will not be available while using the cover screen.

If an activity fails to continue after opening the Fold8, treat continuity as app- and activity-dependent. You can resume the activity manually on the main display; the transition not happening does not change the separate split-screen steps. If a menu path differs, account for Samsung’s stated variation by region, model and software version instead of assuming a feature name or location must be identical everywhere.

Version and availability notes

The steps here follow Samsung’s Fold8-specific One UI 9 guidance, last updated October 9, 2026. Samsung warns that feature names and configurations may vary by country, model and software version, and that some third-party apps may not support Multi window. The display measurements and proportions are Samsung-published specifications, not measures of multitasking speed.

Samsung’s Fold8 support guide is published by Samsung India Support. Samsung’s general Fold support guidance supplies the front-screen limitation for split-screen and pop-up view, while Samsung’s published display specifications give the screen sizes and proportions. Keep those distinctions in mind if you compare instructions from another Fold model: the core choices described here are the Fold8 cover screen for supported quick use and the main display for documented Multi window controls.
