Put detergent in the compartment labeled for the main wash, fabric softener in the compartment marked with a softener symbol or “MAX,” and bleach only in the location and form specified by your washer’s manual. Do not assume every drawer has the same layout: some machines have a separate prewash or bleach section, while others use automatic dispensers.
Before adding any product, read the words or symbols on the drawer and check the manual for your exact model. Liquid, powder, pods, chlorine bleach, color-safe bleach, and powdered products may follow different instructions.
Identify your washer’s compartments first
Dispenser drawers are not standardized. A typical manual drawer may contain three or four sections, but their order and permitted products vary by model. Samsung’s support documentation, for example, describes manual drawers with main-wash, softener, and prewash sections, plus a separate automatic-dispenser design. Whirlpool directs owners to the manual for the particular washer, and LG gives separate instructions for product formats and bleach types.
Look for printed words, icons, or a removable insert before pouring anything. Common labels include:
#1 Best Overall
- 6X BOOSTED CLEAN: Tide liquid laundry detergent is engineered to be 4X cleaner and 2X fresher vs Tide Simply liquid detergent
- TOUGH ON COMMON STAINS: Works on 100% of common stains and has 10X the grease fighting ingredients vs leading bargain detergent
- CONCENTRATED FORMULA: Less water per drop vs leading bargain liquid detergents provides more cleaning power
- LONG-LASTING FRESHNESS: Enjoy the original washing detergent scent you love. Made to last all day, Tide liquid laundry detergent provides freshness that you can count on
- ORIGINAL SCENT FRESHNESS: Original scent helps keep laundry smelling fresh throughout the day
- Main wash: detergent used during the principal wash phase.
- Prewash: detergent or another product used only when a prewash option is selected.
- Softener: liquid fabric softener released during the final rinse on many machines.
- Bleach: on models that provide it, a section intended for a specified bleach product, often liquid chlorine bleach.
If a label conflicts with a general diagram or advice from another machine, the label and model-specific manual take priority. The position of a cup is not reliable evidence: one washer may put the softener section on the left, another in the center, and an automatic dispenser may replace the familiar row of cups altogether.
What goes in each compartment?
| Compartment or dispenser | Typical purpose | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Main wash | Liquid or powdered detergent; some models also allow specified additives | Use the detergent type and insert position required by your manual. Some Samsung manual-drawer types also describe bleach or stain remover here, but that is not universal. |
| Prewash | Detergent for a selected prewash cycle; Samsung also lists starch for the described drawer type | Do not fill it for an ordinary cycle unless the manual tells you to. |
| Softener | Liquid fabric softener | Stay below the MAX line. The line limits filling; it is not a dose recommendation. |
| Bleach section | Usually liquid chlorine bleach on models with a dedicated section | Some washers have no separate bleach cup, and some manuals place particular products elsewhere. Powdered bleach cannot be diluted by the Whirlpool front-load section described in its support guidance. |
| Automatic dispenser reservoir | Bulk detergent, softener, or other products according to the machine’s program | Reservoirs, labels, and dispensing behavior differ by model. Follow the automatic-dispenser instructions rather than treating it like a manual drawer. |
How to add detergent
1. Select the main-wash compartment
For a normal wash, pour detergent into the section marked for the main wash. Use high-efficiency (HE) detergent when the washer manual requires it. LG’s covered front-load instructions call for HE detergent and the detergent maker’s recommended amount. Whirlpool’s described front-load dispenser also specifies liquid or powdered HE detergent.
The washer’s fill line is not a universal dose. Measure according to the detergent package and your washer’s instructions, taking account of the load and cycle settings those instructions cover. Never fill to MAX simply because the compartment is large. A fill line limits the amount the cup can hold; it does not replace the measuring instructions printed on the detergent package.
2. Set the liquid-detergent insert correctly
Some drawers contain a removable liquid cup or selector. In the LG front-load guidance reviewed, the cup remains in place for liquid detergent and is removed for powder. Your machine may use a different arrangement, so check the insert markings before adding detergent. A cup left in the wrong position can direct product incorrectly or prevent powder from dispensing as intended.
3. Add powdered detergent only where permitted
Use the main-wash section for powder when the manual permits it, and remove or reposition any liquid cup as directed. Do not assume that a powder-safe compartment accepts every powdered additive; bleach and stain-removal products have separate rules. If the package calls for a particular water temperature or cycle, follow that instruction only when it is compatible with the washer’s manual.
4. Put pods or capsules in the drum, not the drawer
LG and Samsung instructions say tablets, pods, or capsules belong in the drum rather than the detergent drawer. Whirlpool’s guidance for single-dose packets says to place the packet in the wash basket before starting. Follow both the packet label and the washer manual for the exact placement and cycle restrictions. Do not dissolve a pod in the drawer unless your machine’s instructions explicitly provide that method.
Choosing liquid, powder, or a single-dose product
The format changes the loading procedure even when the wash cycle is the same. Liquid detergent may require a cup or selector in the main-wash section. Powder may require that cup to be removed. A pod or capsule may bypass the drawer completely and go into the drum or wash basket. These are not interchangeable placement choices.

When changing formats, look again at the insert rather than assuming its previous position is correct. An automatic dispenser also may not be designed for single-dose products. If the manual identifies a reservoir for bulk liquid detergent, use that reservoir only as directed and place any pod according to the pod and washer instructions.
How to use the fabric-softener compartment
Fill the marked softener section
Pour liquid fabric softener into the compartment labeled softener or marked with the appropriate symbol. On the LG guidance covered here, the washer releases it during the final rinse. The exact timing and reservoir behavior can differ, especially on automatic-dispensing models.
Stay below MAX
Do not fill above the MAX line. Samsung and LG both emphasize the limit in the covered guidance. MAX tells you how much the compartment can safely hold; it does not tell you how much softener a particular load needs. Measure the product using its package directions and the washer’s instructions.
Do not substitute other products
The softener compartment is not a general-purpose cup for detergent, chlorine bleach, or pods. If the manual permits a different additive in that section, use only the named product and amount. When the drawer has an automatic reservoir, confirm which reservoir is assigned to softener before filling it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a cycle without fabric softener, leave the compartment empty. Adding softener to the main-wash or prewash section changes when it is released and can defeat the purpose of the final-rinse dispensing step described by LG.
How to use bleach safely
Bleach placement is the least universal part of a washing-machine drawer. Identify the product first, then match it to the machine’s instructions. Never pour bleach into an unmarked section just because it is empty.
Liquid chlorine bleach
On the Whirlpool front-load dispenser described in its support material, the bleach section is designed for liquid chlorine bleach and dispenses it at the first rinse after washing. That section cannot dilute powdered bleach. LG’s instructions likewise restrict liquid chlorine bleach to the compartment marked for liquid bleach only.

Measure the amount specified by the bleach label and washer manual. LG’s official wording is direct: “Always measure out the amount of bleach before use. Do not try to guess by pouring.” Keep the liquid below the relevant MAX line, avoid splashing, and never exceed the machine’s stated capacity. If the drawer has no marked liquid-bleach section, do not improvise a location; use the manual’s procedure or omit the product until the manufacturer confirms one.
Color-safe bleach
Color-safe bleach is not automatically interchangeable with chlorine bleach. LG’s covered instructions allow color-safe bleach in the main detergent compartment with detergent, while liquid chlorine bleach goes only in the liquid-bleach compartment. That distinction applies to the cited LG guidance, not to every washer. Check your model’s instructions and the product label before combining it with detergent.
Powdered bleach and other powdered products
Do not put powdered bleach into a dispenser designed to dilute liquid chlorine bleach. Whirlpool specifically notes that its described bleach section cannot dilute powdered bleach. For powdered color-safe products or stain removers, use only the section and cycle named by your washer manual; Samsung’s described manual drawer types list some additives in the main-wash section, but layouts differ.
Prewash: when that compartment is actually used
A prewash compartment is for a cycle that includes a prewash stage. Samsung’s described manual drawer types identify it for prewash detergent or starch. For an ordinary cycle with no prewash selected, leave it empty unless your manual explicitly directs another use.
Do not move the normal detergent dose into the prewash section simply because it is easier to reach. The machine may release that product during the preliminary stage, leaving the principal wash without the detergent amount specified for it. If you use both stages, follow the manual and product directions for the amount in each section rather than treating the two cups as one larger container.

Manual drawers versus automatic dispensers
A manual drawer holds the measured product for one load. You fill the labeled section immediately before starting the cycle, and the washer releases it at the programmed stage.
An automatic dispenser may hold product for multiple loads and meter it automatically. Samsung documents automatic-dispenser designs separately from manual drawer types. The reservoirs may have different labels, capacities, and settings, and the machine may ask you to select detergent concentration or enable automatic dosing. Do not pour a product into an automatic reservoir until the manual identifies that reservoir and explains whether it is intended for detergent, softener, bleach, or another additive.

If you switch from an automatic setting to manual dosing, follow the manufacturer’s procedure for disabling automatic dispensing. The correct button names and menu path are model-specific. Do not assume that pulling out a reservoir or leaving it empty disables automatic dosing; use the documented control or setting.
A complete loading sequence for a normal wash
- Check the drawer and manual. Confirm which sections are main wash, prewash, softener, bleach, or automatic reservoirs.
- Choose the product format. Decide whether you are using liquid detergent, powder, or a single-dose pod. Confirm that the format is supported by the selected cycle.
- Add detergent. Measure the package-recommended amount and place it in the main-wash section. Set the liquid cup or selector as the manual directs.
- Use prewash only when selected. If the cycle includes prewash, add the specified detergent to the prewash compartment. Otherwise leave that section empty unless the manual says otherwise.
- Add softener, if wanted. Measure it into the softener section without crossing MAX.
- Add bleach only after checking its type. Confirm whether the machine accepts liquid chlorine bleach, color-safe bleach, or another product, and use only the specified compartment.
- Place pods in the drum or wash basket. Do not put tablets or capsules in the detergent drawer when the washer instructions direct drum placement.
- Close the drawer and start the cycle. If the drawer does not close normally or the compartment is unclear, stop and consult the model manual instead of forcing it or guessing.
Examples of manufacturer-specific differences
| Manufacturer guidance | Details documented in the cited support material | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| LG USA Support, dated December 15, 2025 | For the covered front-load instructions, use HE detergent; keep the liquid cup for liquid and remove it for powder; put pods in the drum; keep products below relevant maximum lines; use liquid chlorine bleach only in its marked compartment; color-safe bleach may go in the main detergent compartment with detergent. | A single drawer can require different insert positions and compartments depending on product format. |
| Whirlpool Product Help | The described front-load single-load dispenser has separate detergent, softener, and liquid-chlorine-bleach sections. The bleach section dispenses at the first rinse and cannot dilute powdered bleach. Single-dose packets go in the wash basket. | A dedicated bleach cup does not mean it accepts every bleach product. |
| Samsung UK Support, updated May 29, 2026 | Manual drawer types include main-wash, softener, and prewash sections; an automatic-dispenser type is documented separately. The described manual main-wash section can accept several products, while softener must remain below MAX; tablets or capsules go in the drum. | Even within one manufacturer’s range, manual and automatic layouts can differ. |
Common mistakes and what to do
Detergent remains in the drawer
First verify that the product is in the main-wash section and that the liquid cup or selector matches the product format. If the machine uses an automatic dispenser, verify that automatic dosing is enabled and the reservoir is assigned correctly. Consult the model manual for any remaining drawer or water-flow issue rather than moving product to another compartment at random.
Softener is dispensed too early or spills over
Check that it is in the softener section and below MAX. An overfilled section can spill before the intended rinse. Automatic models may require a separate softener setting or reservoir.
Bleach was added to the wrong section
Stop and follow the washer and product instructions. Do not add more chemicals to “correct” the mistake. If the manual does not specify what to do after an incorrect addition, contact the manufacturer or use its model-specific support guidance.
A pod does not dissolve as expected
Confirm that the pod was placed in the drum or wash basket rather than the drawer, as instructed by LG, Samsung, and Whirlpool guidance for the cited models. Also check the pod label and selected cycle.
You cannot tell which section is which
Do not rely on drawer position alone; the order can vary. Look for symbols or words on the drawer, identify the model number, and open that model’s manual. If the labels and manual appear inconsistent, use the manufacturer’s support channel before adding detergent or bleach.

The product format changed between loads
Recheck the insert or selector every time you switch between liquid and powder. The correct location for a pod may be the drum, not either detergent cup. A format change is a reason to reread the package and washer directions, not to reuse the previous setup automatically.

Rules that prevent most dispenser problems
- Use the compartment label and model manual together; neither a generic diagram nor another washer’s layout is a substitute.
- Follow the detergent, softener, pod, and bleach package directions as well as the washer instructions.
- Treat MAX as a physical fill limit, not as a recommended dose.
- Keep liquid chlorine bleach out of compartments not marked for it.
- Never assume powdered bleach can be used in a liquid-bleach dispenser.
- Keep pods and capsules out of the drawer when the machine instructions require drum placement.
- Measure bleach; do not estimate by pouring. LG explicitly warns against guessing.
- Use the prewash compartment only when a prewash stage is selected or the manual names another permitted use.
- Do not fill an automatic reservoir until its label, product type, and dosing mode are confirmed.
- When a product type or drawer design is unclear, stop and consult the exact manual before starting the cycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does detergent go in a washing machine drawer?
Normally it goes in the compartment labeled main wash. Confirm the label and manual first, because some drawers have different layouts and some automatic dispensers use reservoirs instead.
Can I put a pod in the detergent drawer?
For the LG, Samsung, and Whirlpool guidance described here, no. Place the pod, tablet, or capsule in the drum or wash basket as the washer and product instructions direct.
Which compartment holds fabric softener?
Use the section labeled softener or marked with its symbol. Keep the amount below MAX; MAX is a fill limit, not a universal dosage.

Only in a compartment specifically marked for liquid bleach when your model provides one. LG and Whirlpool instructions restrict liquid chlorine bleach to that designated section.
Can powdered bleach go in the bleach cup?
Not if the cup is designed to dilute liquid chlorine bleach. Whirlpool specifically says its described bleach section cannot dilute powdered bleach. Check your model’s manual for any other approved location.
Can color-safe bleach go with detergent?
LG’s covered instructions allow color-safe bleach in the main detergent compartment with detergent, while liquid chlorine bleach uses its marked compartment. Other washers may differ, so verify the manual and product label.
What is the prewash compartment for?
It holds detergent or another named product for a selected prewash stage. Leave it empty for a normal cycle unless the washer manual says otherwise.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What should I do if I cannot identify a compartment?
Do not guess. Read the symbols or words on the drawer, identify the exact model, and consult its manual or manufacturer support before adding detergent, softener, or bleach.
The Bottom Line
Use the labeled main-wash compartment for detergent, the marked softener section for fabric softener, and bleach only where your exact washer and product instructions allow it. Liquid, powder, pods, chlorine bleach, color-safe bleach, prewash sections, and automatic reservoirs can require different handling. Measure products, stay below MAX, put pods in the drum when directed, and consult the model manual whenever the layout or product type is unclear.
