Most Chromebooks put a Search or Launcher key where Caps Lock traditionally sits. To toggle Caps Lock without changing anything, hold Alt and tap Search or Launcher. On keyboards that support it, Fn + Quick Insert does the same. If you want a one-key Caps Lock action, remap Search/Launcher in Settings > Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys.

What the Chromebook key is—and why it is not labeled Caps Lock

Chromebook keyboards generally replace the traditional Caps Lock key with a key labeled Search or Launcher. Google uses both names because the label and keyboard generation can differ. Pressing that key normally opens Chromebook search or the Launcher, where you can find apps, files and settings. Google explains the Launcher’s role in its Launcher menu and Explore app help.

The key is not missing a Caps Lock function. ChromeOS assigns Caps Lock to a shortcut instead, so you can keep Search/Launcher available while still switching uppercase typing on and off. The standard shortcut is documented in Google’s Use your Chromebook keyboard guide.

Turn Caps Lock on or off without changing settings

Use Alt and Search or Launcher

  1. Place your fingers on Alt and the key labeled Search or Launcher.
  2. Hold Alt, tap Search or Launcher, then release both keys.
  3. Type a few letters to confirm the uppercase state, and repeat the same combination when you want Caps Lock off.

Google’s official wording is: “To turn Caps Lock on or off, you can press Alt + Search, press Alt + Launcher, or press Fn + Quick Insert.” The statement appears in the Chromebook keyboard instructions. The shortcut changes the Caps Lock state but leaves the Search/Launcher key’s normal behavior intact.

Try Fn + Quick Insert when your keyboard supports it

Some Chromebook keyboard layouts provide a Quick Insert key and support Fn + Quick Insert for Caps Lock. This is an alternative documented by Google, not a replacement that every Chromebook must provide. If your keyboard has no Quick Insert key, use Alt with Search/Launcher instead.

How to tell which key you have

  • Search: older or differently labeled Chromebook keyboards may print “Search.”
  • Launcher: newer layouts may print “Launcher” or show a launcher-style icon.
  • Quick Insert: only keyboards that include this key can use the Fn combination.

Search and Launcher are the same functional position for this shortcut. Use the label printed on your own keyboard rather than looking for a key marked Caps Lock.

Make Search or Launcher act as Caps Lock by itself

If you use uppercase text frequently, you can assign Caps Lock directly to Search/Launcher. This turns the key into a single-press Caps Lock control, but the key will no longer open search or the Launcher in its ordinary way. Google lists key remapping as a built-in ChromeOS option and includes Caps Lock among the keys that can be assigned; see Create input shortcuts.

Remapping steps

  1. Sign in to the Chromebook.
  2. Select the time in the lower-right corner of the screen to open the system menu.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Open Device, then select Keyboard.
  5. Under Built-in keyboard, select Remap keyboard keys.
  6. Find Search or Launcher in the key list and assign Caps Lock to it.
  7. Close Settings and press the remapped key once while typing. Press it again to return to normal lowercase typing.

ChromeOS labels can change between releases. If your Settings page uses slightly different wording, stay in the Keyboard section and look for the option that remaps or customizes individual keys. The path above is the one Google documents for the built-in keyboard.

What changes after the remap

  • The remapped key sends Caps Lock rather than opening Search or Launcher.
  • Caps Lock becomes a one-key action, which can be easier than holding Alt.
  • You lose that key’s direct Search/Launcher action unless you assign another key or use another way to open the Launcher.
  • The remap affects the built-in Chromebook keyboard. An external keyboard has its own physical key arrangement.

If you need both functions regularly, do not remap. Keep the normal Search/Launcher assignment and use the Alt shortcut when uppercase typing is required.

Shortcut or remap? Choose based on how you use the key

Option Caps Lock action Search/Launcher action Best fit
Default assignment Alt + Search or Alt + Launcher Pressing Search/Launcher alone keeps its normal search or Launcher role People who switch between app/file search and uppercase typing
Remapped assignment Press Search/Launcher alone The key no longer performs its original action People who need frequent Caps Lock and rarely use that key for search
Supported alternate shortcut Fn + Quick Insert Search/Launcher mapping is unchanged Keyboards that include Quick Insert and support the Fn combination

There is no universal “better” setting. The default keeps all original Chromebook functions available; remapping favors a faster single-key Caps Lock command. Decide whether losing the one-key Search/Launcher command would interrupt your normal work before changing the assignment.

Use an external Windows or Mac keyboard

An external keyboard may not have a key labeled Search or Launcher. Google’s shortcut documentation says the Windows key on a Windows keyboard serves as the Chromebook’s Search/Launcher equivalent. For external-keyboard references, see Chromebook keyboard shortcuts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a Windows keyboard connected to a Chromebook, use the Windows key where a Chromebook uses Search/Launcher, so the Caps Lock shortcut is the external keyboard’s equivalent key together with Alt. Google also identifies the Windows or Command key as the external-key equivalent of Search in its shortcut guidance. The physical key may carry a Windows logo, a Command symbol or another manufacturer-specific marking.

External-keyboard checklist

  • Locate the key that ChromeOS treats as Search/Launcher: Windows on a Windows keyboard or Command on a Mac keyboard.
  • Hold Alt and tap that equivalent key.
  • If nothing happens, test the key by itself to see whether it opens search or the Launcher.
  • Check whether the keyboard is connected and recognized before changing Chromebook remapping settings.

The built-in-keyboard remapping menu does not change the physical legends or layout of an external keyboard. For an external device, use its Search-equivalent key and the documented shortcut.

What to check when Alt + Search does not work reliably

Google documents the shortcut and remapping process, but its help does not identify one universal cause for an intermittent failure. Troubleshoot the two keys and their assignments separately so you can determine which part is not responding.

1. Confirm the key assignment

Open Settings > Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys and inspect the Search/Launcher entry. If it is assigned to Caps Lock, pressing the key alone should be the intended Caps Lock action; it will not also behave as Search/Launcher. If you want the original search function back, restore the Search/Launcher assignment and use the Alt shortcut instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Test Search or Launcher on its own

Press Search/Launcher without Alt. If it does not open search or the Launcher under the default mapping, the problem may be with that key, the current assignment or the keyboard connection. A key that does not respond by itself cannot reliably participate in the two-key shortcut.

3. Test Alt on its own in another shortcut

Use Alt with an unrelated, familiar keyboard command. This helps distinguish an Alt-key problem from a Search/Launcher problem. If Alt behaves normally elsewhere but the Caps Lock toggle still fails, recheck the Search/Launcher assignment and try a deliberate, simultaneous hold-and-tap sequence.

4. Check whether you are using the correct physical equivalent

On an external keyboard, the key to combine with Alt may be Windows or Command rather than a key labeled Search. Using a nearby key based on its position can produce no result because external layouts do not place labels in exactly the same way.

5. Undo an accidental remap

If Search/Launcher suddenly stops opening the Launcher and instead changes capitalization, it may have been assigned to Caps Lock. Return to the remapping page and set that key back to its Search/Launcher function. You can then use the default Alt combination without changing other keyboard behavior.

6. Use the documented alternative where available

If your keyboard includes Quick Insert and supports the alternate command, try Fn + Quick Insert. This can confirm that Caps Lock itself still works even when the Search/Launcher key or its mapping needs attention.

Restore the original Chromebook behavior

To return to the standard arrangement, open the remapping screen at Settings > Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys, select the Search/Launcher entry and choose its original Search or Launcher function. After restoring it, pressing the key alone should open the Chromebook search or Launcher, while Caps Lock is available through Alt plus that key.

Restoring the assignment is useful when another person uses the Chromebook, when you rely on app and file search, or when a tutorial assumes the factory keyboard layout. It also gives you a consistent setup across Chromebooks that still use different printed labels.

Practical ways to avoid accidental uppercase typing

Use the shortcut for occasional uppercase text

If you only need all-capital text for headings, codes or short labels, leave the default mapping in place. The two-key command avoids changing the behavior of Search/Launcher, and you can return to lowercase with the same command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use remapping for sustained uppercase work

When a task requires long stretches of uppercase typing, a one-key Caps Lock assignment can reduce the number of keys you hold. Before making that change, make sure your daily workflow does not depend on pressing Search/Launcher alone to find apps, files or settings.

Prefer Shift for a few capital letters

Caps Lock is designed for continuous uppercase input. For a name, acronym or one sentence, holding Shift while pressing a letter avoids changing the keyboard’s capitalization state. This is a typing choice rather than a ChromeOS setting and works with either the default mapping or a remapped key.

Answers to common Chromebook Caps Lock questions

Is Search different from Launcher for this shortcut?

No. Google documents Alt with either label. Use whichever name or icon appears on your Chromebook.

Does remapping Search to Caps Lock preserve search?

No. The assignment gives that key the Caps Lock function instead of its direct Search/Launcher action. Keep the default mapping if you need both without changing settings.

Can I use a Windows keyboard?

Yes. ChromeOS treats the Windows key as the external equivalent of Search; combine that key with Alt for the Caps Lock toggle.

Why does Google mention Fn + Quick Insert?

Some Chromebook keyboards support that alternate shortcut. It is not present on every layout, so use Alt with Search/Launcher when Quick Insert is unavailable.

Where are the remapping controls?

Sign in, select the time, open Settings, then go to Device > Keyboard > Remap keyboard keys. The exact wording can vary as ChromeOS settings change.
